Obama replies on tire gauges

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor August 6, 2008 11:40 AM

Barack Obama delivered a spirited, somewhat sarcastic response Tuesday to Republicans ridiculing his call for energy efficiency, including properly inflating tires to save on gas.

John McCain's campaign has been mocking the suggestion, and the Republican National Committee even made up tire pressure gauges emblazoned with "Obama's Energy Plan."

As the presidential hopefuls spar on energy policy, Obama told voters in Berea, Ohio, that experts agree that properly inflated tires would actually save a significant amount of oil.

"It’s like these guys take pride in being ignorant. They think it is funny that they are making fun of something that is actually true," Obama declared. "They need to do their homework. Instead of running ads about Paris Hilton and Britney Spears, they should go talk to some energy experts and make a difference."

Tucker Bounds, a McCain spokesman, responded, “Instead of calling on his party’s leadership to return to Congress and carve out an ‘all of the above’ approach to America’s energy crisis, Barack Obama would rather tell commuters to inflate their car tires. Barack Obama does not have the judgment or experience to understand that Americans aren’t choosing between offshore drilling and inflating their car tires, they’re demanding action now.”

UPDATE: The Obama campaign jumped on a comment McCain made Tuesday night, circulating a version that said: “And could I mention that Senator Obama a couple of days ago said that we ought to all inflate our tires, and I don’t disagree with that. The American Automobile Association strongly recommends it.”

In the wee hours today, the McCain campaign accused Obama's of selectively editing it, saying that McCain's full quote was, "And could I mention that Senator Obama a couple of days ago said that we ought to all inflate our tires, and I don’t disagree with that. The American Automobile Association strongly recommends it, but I also don't think that that's a way to become energy independent."

McCain spokesman Brian Rogers added, "As John McCain has said multiple times and said again yesterday: keeping your tires inflated is great, but Barack Obama's claim that this is a substitute for drilling as a part of a comprehensive energy strategy demonstrates his inexperience on the energy issue."

UPDATE: The Obama campaign is also trying to hit back at McCain by highlighting what he said about energy conservation during a campaign event in April:

“And I'm sorry to tell you that the price of oil -- as far as I can tell -- is not gonna go down anytime soon until we eliminate our dependency on it. We can do that as a nation -- we can turn out the lights five minutes earlier, we don't have to drive the extra block.”

  1. Obama's tire guage comments were the stupidest thing I've ever heard. What kind of policy is that? It's just proof that liberals have no clue about human nature. I mean sure, if everybody inflated their tires we'd use less gas, but the chances of getting everybody together, 300m people, to make sure their tires are inflated is never going to happen. It's like herding cats. An idea has to be realistic to be good. This is so pie in the sky, it just invites a smack upside the head, which is exactly what McCain is delivering. Get with it Obama, I want you to win!

  1. who is being ignorant someone who thinks ALL the oil from drilling can be saved by tire inflation and tune-ups, or someone who mocks that as the bull crap that it is

  1. Yet again, Obama has a point here. He's the one focusing on the issues again (and his advice is practical for saving gas right now), while McCain is off doing something... else. I'm really not seeing much of the McCain I was expecting when I voted for him in the Primary. I was expecting something like 2000, but instead I'm getting what seems to be a very confused campaign.

All I know is that this is starting to get sad, and I really hope the McCain turns his campaign around because if he wins of a campaign like this then I may lose all hope in the American people. Why doesn't he show us why he deserves to be the President like he did in 2000?

  1. hmmm.....tire gauges. Wow!! Way to go Obama!! You weny to Harvard and this is what you come up with????

Seems to me Obama is reading from the Jimmy Carter Book of Energy Policies ("wear thicker sweaters").

    What a ROOKIE !!!!!

  1. First of all, Obamas suggestion to properly inflate tires is not his "energy policy". It was one example of how efficiency and conservation can have a greater immediate impact than drilling. Experts agree that if all tires were properly inflated we would save as much oil as offshore drilling could create. And this savings could happen immediately, not in 7-20 years, as would happen with offshore drilling.

Oil companies already have access to drillable land, however, they choose not to drill it. The opening of these offshore sites would not require oil companies to drill it would just give them the option to drill whenever they choose. Regardless, it is bad policy to try to increase supply by extracting relatively miniscule amounts of oil. More appropriately we should lower demand through efficiency and conservation. This can be done relatively quickly and simply in daily life and this was the point Obama was making with the properly inflated tire comment. This is not ignorance, this is sensible, serious advice which forms part of a larger policy.

  1. McCain's Voting Record: He Does Not Support Our Troops and Veterans

September 2007: McCain voted against the Webb amendment calling for adequate troop rest between deployments. At the time, nearly 65% of people polled in a CNN poll indicted that "things are going either moderately badly or very badly in Iraq.

July 2007: McCain voted against a plan to drawdown troop levels in Iraq. At the time, an ABC poll found that 63% thought the invasion was not worth it, and a CBS News poll found that 72% of respondents wanted troops out within 2 years.

March 2007: McCain was too busy to vote on a bill that would require the start of a drawdown in troop levels within 120 days with a goal of withdrawing nearly all combat troops within one year. Around this time, an NBC News poll found that 55% of respondents indicated that the US goal of achieving victory in Iraq is not possible. This number has not moved significantly since then.

February 2007: For such a strong supporter of the escalation, McCain didn’t even bother to show up and vote against a resolution condemning it. However, at the time a CNN poll found that only 16% of respondents wanted to send more troops to Iraq (that number has since declined to around 10%), while 60% said that some or all should be withdrawn. This number has since gone up to around 70%.

June 2006: McCain voted against a resolution that Bush start withdrawing troops but with no timeline to do so.

May 2006: McCain voted against an amendment that would provide $20 million to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for health care facilities.

April 2006: McCain was one of only 13 Senators to vote against $430,000,000 for the Department of Veteran Affairs for Medical Services for outpatient care and treatment for veterans.

March 2006: McCain voted against increasing Veterans medical services funding by $1.5 billion in FY 2007 to be paid for by closing corporate tax loopholes.

March 2004: McCain once again voted for abusive tax loopholes over veterans when he voted against creating a reserve fund to allow for an increase in Veterans' medical care by $1.8 billion by eliminating abusive tax loopholes. Jeez, McCain really loves those tax loopholes for corporations, since he voted for them over our veterans' needs.

October 2003: McCain voted to table an amendment by Senator Dodd that called for an additional $322,000,000 for safety equipment for United States forces in Iraq and to reduce the amount provided for reconstruction in Iraq by $322,000,000.

April 2003: McCain urged other Senate members to table a vote (which never passed) to provide more than $1 billion for National Guard and Reserve equipment in Iraq related to a shortage of helmets, tents, bullet-proof inserts, and tactical vests.

August 2001: McCain voted against increasing the amount available for medical care for veterans by $650,000,000. To his credit, he also voted against the 2001 Bush tax cuts, which he now supports making permanent, despite the dire financial condition this country is in, and despite the fact that he indicated in 2001 that these tax cuts unfairly benefited the very wealthy at the expense of the middle class.

So there it is. John McCain is yet another republican former military veteran who likes to talk a big game when it comes to having the support of the military. Yet, time and time again, he has gone out of his way to vote against the needs of those who are serving in our military. If he can’t even see his way to actually doing what the troops want, or what the veterans need, and he doesn’t have the support of veterans, then how can he be a credible commander in chief?

  1. McCain's voting record on women's issues:

McCain has voted consistently against women's health, and he supports overturning the landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling, Roe v. Wade. Following is a summary of his positions on women's issues.

McCain Opposed Equal Pay Bill for Women, Said They ‘Need Education and Training’ Instead. McCain skipped a vote on the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act that would ensure women have the opportunity to recover back pay for discrimination once they discover it. If he had been there to vote, he said he would have voted against it and that women “need education and training” rather than an equal pay bill. The bill addressed a recent Supreme Court decision that said Steelworker Lilly Ledbetter could not recover back pay for 19 years of discrimination at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. because she had not discovered the unequal pay until she retired. The bill would amend the 1964 Civil Rights Act to allow employees to file charges of pay discrimination within 180 days of the last received paycheck affected by the discrimination. [Source: aflcio.org; H.R. 2831, Vote 110, 4/23/08; Associated Press, 4/28/08]

McCain Voted to Gut the Family and Medical Leave Act. In 1993, before finally voting for the Family and Medical Leave Act, McCain voted to jeopardize leave for millions of workers by gutting the bill. He voted to suspend the Family and Medical Leave Act unless the federal government certified that compliance would not increase business expenses or provide financial assistance to businesses to cover any related costs. [Source: aflcio.org S.Amdt. 16, S. 5, Vote 7, 2/4/93; H.R. 1, Vote 11, 2/4/93]

Source for the following information: Planned Parenthood

McCain opposed spending $100 million to prevent unintended and teen pregnancies. In 2005, McCain voted NO to allocate $100 million to expand access to preventive health care services that reduce the numbers of unintended and teen pregnancies and reduce the number of abortions.

McCain opposed legislation requiring that abstinence-only programs be medically accurate and scientifically based.
McCain voted NO on legislation that would help reduce the number of teen pregnancies by providing funding for programs to teach comprehensive, medically accurate sexuality education and other programs to prevent unintended teen pregnancies.

McCain opposed Title X, the nation's family planning program.
In 1990, McCain voted NO on legislation to extend the Title X federal family planning program, which provides low-income and uninsured women and families with health care services ranging from breast and cervical cancer screening to birth control.

McCain opposed requiring insurance coverage of prescription birth control.
In 2003, McCain voted NO on legislation to improve the availability of contraceptives for women and to require insurance coverage of prescription birth control.

    McCain opposes comprehensive sex education.
In an interview aboard the "Straight Talk Express," McCain struggled to answer questions about comprehensive sex education and HIV prevention. He also stated that he supported "the president's policy" on sex education.

McCain unsure where he stands on government funding for contraception.
"Whether I support government funding for them or not, I don't know," McCain said about contraceptives.

McCain opposed repealing the "global gag rule."
In 2005, McCain voted NO on legislation to overturn the "global gag rule," which bars foreign nongovernmental organizations from receiving U.S. family planning assistance if the organization (using its own, non-U.S. funds) provides abortion services or information or advocates for pro-choice laws and policies in its own country.

McCain supports overturning Roe v. Wade.
In February 2007, the AP quoted McCain stating, "I do not support Roe v. Wade. It should be overturned." In May 2007, he reiterated his desire to overturn Roe v. Wade during an appearance on Meet the Press stating, "My position has been consistently in my voting record, pro-life, and I continue to maintain that position and voting record."

  1. Inflating your tires to the proper recommended gauge is a smart thing to do and does save gas money. Routinely servicing your car also saves you money. For McCain and the RNC to mock these realities certainly proves their ignorance. Senator Obama is not making inflating your tires POLICY. He is recommending we all do this to help us keep our gas costs down. We'll see immediate results at the pumps. Try it! Another way to save gas money is to plan doing all of your errands on the same day if at all possible. I do this and it works for me. Instead of using two tanks of gas a month, I am now filling my car about every month and a half. If you do these things consistently, you will definitely see how much less you spend at the gas pumps, both in time and money. Also, suggest filling your tank when it is half full rather than letting it get so low that you risk getting stranded. Again, please remember Senator Obama's energy policies are NOT about inflating your tires, he is merely advising us to do so to help us save money on gas costs. Kudos to him! And boos to McCain and the RNC for their ignorance and mockery of a very good suggestion by the young senator of Illinois!.

  1. Once again, McCain is showing his total ignorance and stupidity!! During yesterday's visit to the Motorcyclists' rally----yes, it was the Motorcyclists' rally, NOT a McCain rally, McCain encouraged his wife, Cindi, to compete in their beauty contest!!! Imagine that! The contestants wear bikinis that barely cover their bodies and they perform simulated sex!!! Is this enough to convice all those McCain lovers of John McCain's utter ignorance and stupidity?? He wants to put his wife out there in a minibikini and to perform simulated sexual acts!!! He wants to "prostitute" his wife!! Imagine that!!! McCain, you are one old ignorant fool!! What's this gonna do for you? Get you more votes?? He even stated Cindi would be the first woman to win the motorcyclists' beauty contest and be the first lady
too!! Imagine that! So then, what we would have would be a first lady who was a drug addict, who stole prescription drugs (to feed her habit) from the children's charity where she worked, competing in a beauty contest nearly naked, and performing simulated sexual acts!!! WOW, What an IMPRESSIVE First Lady she would make!!

Ed. Senator Obama was NOT calling you and me or anybody else ignorant. He was specifically talking about the RNC and McCain Campaign. IF you want to consider yourself ignorant, that's another thing. However, rest assured Obama was not calling YOU or our citizens ignorant. Like I said, if you want to think of yourself as such, then I would say you have a personal problem.

Which experts? Will they please stand up and explain how properly inflated tires would actually have a significant impact on how much oil we use as a nation? I bet Obama is bluffing, or purposely misquoting some experts.

  1. Russell4America, thanks for a great post! I've copied it so I can draw from the record you've assembled here. It's strange, given McCain's background, that he so blatantly disregards the needs of his fellow vets; not to mention those of women and famiies, as well. How does this show respect for America if he doesn't respect its citizens?

  1. This from a political party who "shut off the lights" in Congress to stifle any further debate on developing a comprehensive energy plan. Speaker Pelosi and her gang have ZERO interest in helping this country. It's all about POWER to them. She does not care ONE IOTA about you and me.

How can you vote for a party that only cares about taking their August vacations when you and me pay through the nose for higher gas prices? We can't afford to go anywhere on vacations.

I'm switching parties and voting for McCain.

  1. Does Obama mean to inflate to the maximum tire load pressure (approximately 44 psi for most tires) or the vehicle manufacturers recommended tire pressure (35 psi for most vehicles)? The maximum tire inflation pressure, which is on the tire and is what most people think is correct, will result in a very stiff, bumpy ride and will result in early tread wear in the center of the tire and possibly difficult handling including the possibility of overcorrecting when steering. The tire traction will also be compromised during slippery, icy, snowy conditions. It is also not recommended for drag racing. The recommended tire inflation pressure for your vehicle is in your owner manual and on the inside of the drivers side door on a sticker. I think he got his tire knowledge from watching "My Cousin Vinny".

  1. I am a republican but I am disappointed about some republicans or folks exhibiting their arogance beyond measure! Let's face the facts: Obama is absolutely right about tire guages! This is just one of his suggestions that could save 3%-4% of fuel consumption. Go and do some research! I back him on this without reservation. Just because you dislike someone does not mean you even trash the truth that he speaks! Listen to the whole clip attentively! It is a shame that you have certain sick mCCAIN'S mercenaries 24/7 online to distorts facts and realities. I am strong republican but I strongly support OBAMA'S ideas. Mccain should now start putting our donations into good ads and STOP wasting it in promoting Britney and Paris! OBAMA IS INTELLIGENT AND AM THINKING OF INFLUINCING MY WHOLE UNIT OF 50 WORKERS TO VOTE FOR HIM

  1. Obama is on the right track calling for Americans to keep tires properly inflated.

Americans CAN do something about the energy crisis. With everyone working together to solve the problem, even something that seems little, like proper tire inflation, can grow to a savings of $ 14 billion a year, which doesn’t seem small at all.

Tires will stay properly inflated even longer with high-purity nitrogen.

High-purity nitrogen is more stable than compressed air. This allows tires to stay properly inflated longer and leads to increased gas mileage, improved tire life and reduced carbon emissions. High-purity nitrogen also can provide a safer ride, with better handing and stability.

  1. I started out thinking it was great to finally have two worthy candidates for president to choose between. I voted my first time in 1968 as a young army officer in Vietnam and, honestly, thought I would never live long enough to see such a thing.

Then I started paying attention and learned that I was, unfortunately, only half right. Nothing I have seen coming out of McCain´s campaign makes me think he deserves my vote.

  1. The "experts" are NASCAR, AAA, edmunds.com and the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Association, a U.S. government agency) who ALL recommend keeping your tires properly inflated to GET THE MOST MILEAGE FROM YOUR VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING and while doing so USE LESS GASOLINE.

Even 1-4 lbs under-inflated tires can mean a difference of 5-10% MPG less. It's not THE solution to our energy problem, but one that can immediately translate to a savings at the pump for all driviers. Just because an idea sounds ridiculous doesn't mean it is. And just because an idea sounds wonderful (McCain's wanting to relax the gas tax, drilling off-shore, and nuclear energy) doesn't mean it is.

Ask why Californians and Floridians historically been against off-shore drilling -- it has to do with the beaches. Ask why McCain cancelled his much publicized trip to New Orleans scheduled on the same day Obama spoke in Berlin -- a huge oil spill from the drilling platforms near the Mississippi caused by a storm, and not the weather itself, that would've been at odds with McCain's support of off-shore drilling. Ask the French, even though 87% of their energy is supplied by 59 nuclear power plants, why they have problems finding where to store nuclear waste by-products -- because no one wants the stuff buried in their back yard. The more rural south resents the consumption of more energy by Paris and vicinities north, while the waste is buried in the south. It's the same problem at Yucca Mountain in Nevada -- no one wants the waste products dumped in their backyard. Just saying you're for nuclear power does nothing to educate the public as to what is really involved.

  1. Fools are taking one piece out of an entire suggestion on how to save gas and run with it? Are most of you serious? Stop taking one snippet and playing it over and over and listen for the ENTIRE THING. Obama also suggested SOME off shore drilling as well as dipping into some petroleum until we can get plug in Hybrid cars on the road by 2015. Too much off shore drilling would more than likely do more harm than good especially of those that live with in or around the area of the drilling. Even if the off shore drilling is not near American's shores.

  1. Wake up people. Lets face it, every car owner in America IS NOT going to ensure their tires are properly inflated on a daily basis. To think so is absurd. It's like asking everyone to eat oatmeal for breakfast every morning to lower their cholesterol for the sake of cutting Health Insurance rates. Obama is completely out of touch with the needs of the Country. He is power hungry, and willing to say or do anything to buy a vote. If he is elected, he will be the least experienced President to ever take Office. He has only been a Senator since early 2003 for goodness sake! I am not a fan of McCain either, but facing the decision to decide, you must weigh the experience of each contestant. And I must say, there is absolutely no comparison. You can count the number of Bills passed with Obama's name on them on one hand.

Posted by Shanon Deal August 7, 08 02:57 PM
  1. "JUST DRILL" Lets get over with this simple solution and just put a drill on the damn hole and pump the oil up instead of Obama making a fool of himself suggesting inflating tires as if we are so damn stupid.Say something that makes sense rather than your absurd solution.
