Obama: 'We are a better country than this'
Senator Barack Obama promised change -- and spelled out specifics such as tax cuts for the middle class and an end to dependence on foreign oil in 10 years -- as he accepted the Democratic presidential nomination tonight.
Obama also warned that Republican John McCain would mean four more years of President Bush's flawed policies, declaring “America, we are better than these last eight years. We are a better country than this.”
Here are excerpts of the speech, titled "The American Promise," just released by Obama's campaign:
“Four years ago, I stood before you and told you my story – of the brief union between a young man from Kenya and a young woman from Kansas who weren’t well-off or well-known, but shared a belief that in America, their son could achieve whatever he put his mind to.
“It is that promise that has always set this country apart – that through hard work and sacrifice, each of us can pursue our individual dreams but still come together as one American family, to ensure that the next generation can pursue their dreams as well.
“It is why I stand here tonight. Because for two hundred and thirty two years, at each moment when that promise was in jeopardy, ordinary men and women – students and soldiers, farmers and teachers, nurses and janitors -- found the courage to keep it alive.
“We meet at one of those defining moments – a moment when our nation is at war, our economy is in turmoil, and the American promise has been threatened once more.
“Tonight, more Americans are out of work and more are working harder for less. More of you have lost your homes and more are watching your home values plummet. More of you have cars you can’t afford to drive, credit card bills you can’t afford to pay and tuition that is beyond your reach
“These challenges are not all of government’s making. But the failure to respond is a direct result of a broken politics in Washington and the failed presidency of George W. Bush.
“America, we are better than these last eight years. We are a better country than this.”
***
“This moment – this election – is our chance to keep, in the 21st century, the American promise alive. Because next week, in Minnesota, the same party that brought you two terms of George Bush and Dick Cheney will ask this country for a third. And we are here because we love this country too much to let the next four years look just like the last eight. On November 4th, we must stand up and say: “Eight is enough.”
“Now let there be no doubt. The Republican nominee, John McCain, has worn the uniform of our country with bravery and distinction, and for that we owe him our gratitude and respect. And next week, we’ll also hear about those occasions when he’s broken with his party as evidence that he can deliver the change that we need.
“But the record’s clear: John McCain has voted with George Bush ninety percent of the time. Senator McCain likes to talk about judgment, but really, what does it say about your judgment when you think George Bush was right more than ninety percent of the time? I don’t know about you, but I’m not ready to take a ten percent chance on change.”
***
“You see, we Democrats have a very different measure of what constitutes progress in this country.
“We measure progress by how many people can find a job that pays the mortgage; whether you can put away a little extra money at the end of each month so that you can someday watch your child receive her diploma. We measure progress in the 23 million new jobs that were created when Bill Clinton was President – when the average American family saw its income go up $7,500 instead of down $2,000 like it has under George Bush.
“We measure the strength of our economy not by the number of billionaires we have or the profits of the Fortune 500, but by whether someone with a good idea can take a risk and start a business, or whether the waitress who lives on tips can take a day off to look after a sick kid without losing her job – an economy that honors the dignity of work.
“The fundamentals we use to measure economic strength are whether we are living up to that fundamental promise that has made this country great – a promise that is the only reason I am standing here tonight.”
***
“That’s the promise we need to keep. That’s the change we need right now. So let me spell out exactly what that change would mean if I am President.
.
“Change means a tax code that doesn’t reward the lobbyists who wrote it, but the American workers and small businesses who deserve it.
“Unlike John McCain, I will stop giving tax breaks to corporations that ship our jobs overseas, and I will start giving them to companies that create good jobs right here in America.
“I will eliminate capital gains taxes for the small businesses and the start-ups that will create the high-wage, high-tech jobs of tomorrow.
“I will cut taxes – cut taxes – for 95% of all working families. Because in an economy like this, the last thing we should do is raise taxes on the middle-class.
“And for the sake of our economy, our security, and the future of our planet, I will set a clear goal as President: in ten years, we will finally end our dependence on oil from the Middle East.
“Washington has been talking about our oil addiction for the last thirty years, and John McCain has been there for twenty-six of them. In that time, he’s said no to higher fuel-efficiency standards for cars, no to investments in renewable energy, no to renewable fuels. And today, we import triple the amount of oil as the day that Senator McCain took office.
“Now is the time to end this addiction, and to understand that drilling is a stop-gap measure, not a long-term solution. Not even close.
“As President, I will tap our natural gas reserves, invest in clean coal technology, and find ways to safely harness nuclear power. I’ll help our auto companies re-tool, so that the fuel-efficient cars of the future are built right here in America. I’ll make it easier for the American people to afford these new cars. And I’ll invest $150 billion over the next decade in affordable, renewable sources of energy – wind power and solar power and the next generation of biofuels; an investment that will lead to new industries and five million new jobs that pay well and can’t ever be outsourced.”
***
“We are the party of Roosevelt. We are the party of Kennedy. So don’t tell me that Democrats won’t defend this country. Don’t tell me that Democrats won’t keep us safe. The Bush-McCain foreign policy has squandered the legacy that generations of Americans -- Democrats and Republicans – have built, and we are to restore that legacy.
“As Commander-in-Chief, I will never hesitate to defend this nation, but I will only send our troops into harm’s way with a clear mission and a sacred commitment to give them the equipment they need in battle and the care and benefits they deserve when they come home.
“I will end this war in Iraq responsibly, and finish the fight against al Qaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan. I will rebuild our military to meet future conflicts. But I will also renew the tough, direct diplomacy that can prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. I will build new partnerships to defeat the threats of the 21st century: terrorism and nuclear proliferation; poverty and genocide; climate change and disease. And I will restore our moral standing so that America is once more the last, best hope for all who are called to the cause of freedom, who long for lives of peace, and who yearn for a better future.”

Nice talk but I don't think he can deliver on the promises in his speech.
Lots of talk but no track record.
THe democrats have had 2 years of control of the congres and haven't delivered either. Sorry but gas prices exploded about tow years ago and we see no action from any of the democrats.
Lots of talk but no action.
A bunch of non doable promises.
And, why hasn't the Democrats done some of these things over the past three and a half years???
Not bad..
Bob, don't forget the prez has to sign a bill to make it law. The dems can't pass anything with Bush in office. He even veto'd the SCHIP bill for children's health insurance for crying out loud. I agree that the dems haven't done much. But reality is reality and it's gridlock - until January!
this doesn't do anything for me . . . except parts of it actually made me laugh.
barack obama is like a saturday night live skit come to life.
britney obama in '08? not a chance.
He is better when politics are out of the issue i.e. attacking John McCain doesn't come across as natural as talking about improving lives and a better future.
Despite a life long Republican and strongest of strong Bush supporters, I think Obama's strength's out weigh McCains...
Sad that such an inexperienced leftist is this close to controlling our country all because of media hype and skin color. Question: what has Barack Hussein Obama ever done besides promote himself?
Very true Bob, no action...like driving this country into a ditch, as Bush has done. That's the Republican idea of "action"...I'd rather have someone who will just talk and sit on his hands than the moron who has backed up his stupid ideas with stupid actions for the past 8 years
What an amazing speech. I only hope the speech concludes with Obama taking 2 tuna's and 2 loaves of bread and feeding all in attendance seared tuna sashimi and toast.
“We are the party of Roosevelt. We are the party of Kennedy. So don’t tell me that Democrats won’t defend this country. Don’t tell me that Democrats won’t keep us safe."
I maybe wrong.....but didn't Kennedy almost take us to WWIII?
YADA.....YADA......YADA.......
ZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....................
Obama continues to deride offshore drilling. Hey, B.O., if offshore drilling HAS NO EFFECT ON OIL PRICES, then why does a hurricane simply passing through the gulf for a few days cause the proce of oil to go up.
Don't worry though, Barack will give speeches as president that will prevent hurricanes from affecting oil production so there's no need to drill any more.
No action? The man hasn't even been elected president yet!
Turn off the Karl Rove Kool-Aid tap!
Now that I think about it though, when you say "lots of talk but no action" you actually hit the nail on the head.
It's a perfect description of the last eight years of the Bush misadminsitration!
Brilliant speech
You're nuts...like most myopic Bush sheep. A child can see things are worse. Kennedy promised that man would walk on the moon: he had no track record of doing anything similar to THAT.
But it happened.
Republicans love to focus on the Congress and what they haven't done.
BUSH IS THE PRESIDENT. It's not too complex to understand.
What happened to Harry Truman's motto, 'The buck stops here'?
He didn't tell us how many White House interns he will diddle like the last Democrat president did. He also should have an estimate for us about when we can expect Islamists to successfully poison NYC's water supply or fly airliners into another series of buildings as his attentions are focused elsewhere.
honestly, what do politicians have to do with gas prices?? if you believe they have any impact on the price of gas or any market for that matter you are a complete fool
Blah Blah Blah.. same rhetoric, but he will be completely unable to fulfill the promises presented.
Like Clinton (version male or female), they can talk a big game, but just can't deliver

"THe democrats have had 2 years of control of the congres and haven't delivered either."
someone needs to brush up on their schoolhouse rock.
i agree with the first poster; actions speak louder than words.
"And I will do it by taking a bigger piece of pie from those who made it. If they mind, they are just greedy and selfish and so we'll throw them in prison! Especially if they criticize me! We'll have none of that in my administration. We'll have no more poverty when I am crowned President because I say it is so. And so it will be."
So, some people have cars that they can't afford to drive and have credit card debt? Please explain to me how that is governement's problem. Sounds to me like a lot of folks simply don't know how to live within their means. We all want nice stuff, but most of us buy what we can afford. .
In 10 years...he will be out of office even if he serves 2 terms!!!!
obama or mcain, NO difference.
This guy is such a blow hard!! I can't wait to see him debate, b/c when he loses that TelePrompTer his weakness is going to be shown. This guy can't think on his feet, and I do not want this man to become president.
Like we say here in Montana to someone like Obama... all hat and no cattle!
Nuff said
This guy is unbelievable. If it were up to him, we would have left Iraq in defeat, not winning and leaving with dignity.
60% of our budget is already spent in entitlements, he will just add to that.
Dependency kills initiative. Dependency kills risk-taking and success. Dependency kills individual responsibility.
Obama seeks to make more Americans Dependent on the Govt. No to Obama, Yes to McCain (especially if he taps Romney for his Veep)
Hard to change the direction of the country when you don't have a filibuster-proof majority and when your president vetoes everything you throw at him.
...And Brutus is an honorable man.
Make it easier for small businesses by placing a $15,000 employee tax to pay for your universal and socialistic health care? Get real.
Eliminate capital gains taxes on small businesses? What does that mean? If you invest in small businesses then you won't have a capital gains tax? Or if you start a small business, you won't have to pay the capital gains tax on any of your investments (what a loop hole that would be)? The only mention of capital gains taxes is that you have intended to not raise them "any further" than the Clinton era of 28%, and qualified that statement by saying that it might settle around 20%. Way to really encourage investment by making it more expensive and less profitable to do so. The amount of people that will immediately start selling their long-term investments in order to ensure they're only taxed at 15% will be scary the day after the election.
That speech has no more substance behind it than the phony "Parthenon" backdrop BO has decided to deliver his speech in front of. I guess BO has the approval of Zeus and the Gods. Ridiculous.
I agree with you, Bob. I'm a conservative, first; Republican second. This country can't afford to go so far to the liberal left...and the people voting for him don't really know what's going to hit them (and their wallets) if he's elected. I'm scared for myself and my country if Obama gets in the White House. I don't agree with McCain on a lot of the issues, but I do know this...he will keep terrorists at bay, bring our troops home with a victory, and will serve this country proudly. I'll stake my reputation on that...and that's why he'll get my vote. And, I'm not one of the "jump on the bandwagon" people like so many of the Obama followers are. I've spent the last year (maybe more) studying issues on both sides and what's best for this country. I wouldn't vote otherwise. It scares me that so many people voting for Obama don't have a clue what he stands for. Heck, I'm not sure Obama even knows what he stands for. I guess "winging it" will work for him.
Yo, Bob. How many times in the last two years has the Republican minority in the Senate blocked Democratic measures on critical issues? Control of Congress means nothing without 60 votes in the Senate (does anyone really think that new filibuster rules have actually helped our governing process??).
Contrary to your concept, we need more Democratic control in order to get things done. The Republicans had their chance to govern from 1994 to 2006 and they blew it trying to establish a permanent majority rather than governing the country.
Time to give the other guys a real chance.
If he can't deliver on the promises in his speech Who can BOB.....you..? Democrats have had two years of a crappy president VETO'ing everything they tried to do......thats why there is no action. BOB if you want to see high gas prices take a drive to Canada then you won't be able to afford to drive home. IF a republican president is elected I truly believe the enite world will give up on the states because they apperently are to blind to see the forest thru the trees.
So, he tells you that you buy homes you can't afford, cars you can't afford, credit cards you can't afford! So, whose responsibility is that?
This is a lame speech and certainly doesn't rise to the level that requires a stadium or all this fanfare. He'll finish the fight against al queda. Yea, sure. I doubt he knows a platoon from battalion. A President Obama will be just as ineffective as Clinton's sorry years.
Bob, a party controlled Congress doesn't really control congress without a President of the same party - unless they have a veto-proof super majority. Congress can't do anything unless it's already made a deal with the White House - or else it's not worth doing until they, hopefully, can secure the White House for themselves. Until then, Congress is stuck waiting around for that White House or that super majority - then you will see change, whether it be good or bad.
So he's going to Finish the Fight, eh?
I am cautiously optimistic for Obama. As a solar professional I favor his progressive energy platform, it would create thousands of rewarding jobs and reduce our use of fossil fuels.
But lets read what the tons of resigned and cynical people write. Their wit and mispelllngsin are entertaining. Can I get a Messiah comment? How about his funny middle name? Empty suit? Birth certificate? Bring it!
Obama/Biden 08!!
I am certain he can deliver!!!!!!!!!! OBAMA/BIDEN 08/12
"More of you have lost your homes and more are watching your home values plummet. More of you have cars you can’t afford to drive, credit card bills you can’t afford to pay and tuition that is beyond your reach. These challenges are not all of government’s making. But the failure to respond is a direct result of a broken politics in Washington and the failed presidency of George W. Bush."
So basically, even though these problems aren't the government's fault, the government should fix them. Another way of putting that is, the fault lies with people who spent more than they earned, and Obama is going to make the fiscally responsible people pay for it.
I really like Obama as a person, but stuff like this makes it hard for me to vote for him...
Outrageous!! Here in Democratic controlled California we are on the verge of bankruptcy. We finally have had to bring in a Republican Governor to try to sort through the financial mess. In New York, it wasn't until they brought in Republican Rudy Guliani that there was any change in the crime infested and decaying city.
Up until the Democrats controlled the congress 2 years ago, the economy was booming. Wall street was at record highs. The dive in wall street, the housing crisis (which came about as a direct result of a Democratic initiate to force banks to lend to high risk people) and record high gas prices all occurred after Democrats took control.. and squandered 2 years in bickering and finger pointing.
Some people didn't think he would be able to stand here tonight and give this speech, so whether or not you believe he can deliver, is irrelevant.
The fact is Senator Obama has a proven track record of improving the lives of the American people, and he will be an excellent President of these United States.
Having a majority in congress doesn't mean a thing when we have a President who uses his veto pen more than any other President in history. Together, a President Obama and a majority of Democrats in congress can and will deliver.
Vote Obama for a better and brighter future for America.
Great speech, and it's all workable and can be put into effect. Bush and his cronies have all but destroyed a once great nation. They continue to reach out with evil talons to scratch the backs of the those who backed them knowing full well they would reward them. They rewarded the oil companies, they rewarded the wealthiest of Americans, and they lied to the people to get a war resulting in countless dead. History will never be kind to this Mafia, and the ringleaders who concocted and fabricated lies. 232 years, and in less than 8, this band of thugs have robbed the citizen of rights, freedoms, and hopes all the while protecting them and their cronies.
Empty suit and empty promises. He's a great speaker but no track record except associations with terrorists, anti-Americans, and Chicago political cronies. This man has not earned the right to be our leader.
Oh Obama Osama our Messiah!!!!!
Please deliver us from the evil white man and all of the horror he has inflicted upon us holy democrats....let the illegals come in and destroy the middle class...let continue to keep the borders open so terrorist can destroy the republican...alaha has blessed us with you...cough cough..hair ball!!
I agree with Bob. All talk with no proof to back any of it up. The government can not bail every person out who is irresponsible enough to place themselves in debt up to their eye balls (i.e. buying cars they can't afford or run up unpayable amounts of credit card debt). I am curious what Obama would do with the USSR... sorry I meant Russia, and exactly what he means by "I will end this war in Iraq responsibly." I also question his ability to work with rather than against Republicans.
Thank gooness for the fact-checkers who will reveal the countless errors in what is set forth by BHO as fact...wink wink wink.
"Give me power over your life, liberty, and property and I'll make everything better. I've got this great five year plan, you see ..."
Yeah, more of the same National Socialism (read: Neo-Communist) collectivist garbage that's poisoned Federalism in this country.
Big Brother does not know best. Barrack Obama and his allies need to get their filthy hands out of the wallets and businesses of the American Citizens. We do a great job for ourselves, thank you very much. Government is not the solution to our problems as a nation, but rather the greater cause of most of them - as well as a constant enabler / apologist for the failings of individuals. The solution is to let Americans take care of themselves, their families, and their neighbors. The strength of the American spirit lies in her independent, hard-working, and moral citizenry - not her Public Sector overrun with lawyers, politicians, and lobbyists.
Charity is not a function of the National Government.
"Climate change," is the true "politics of fear," in the 21st century.
Appeasement is not a foreign policy in the interests of the United States.
America, we are a better country than this.
There is nothing more poignant than the vericity of this statement. I'm not a member of the Cult of Obama and I think that McCain is basically decent and would be a fair-to-good President, but God I hope that Obama wins and that he is able to make good on the change he promises.
Because it is needed.
We deserve better than the less of 'Who Cares;.
Shut up and vote for McCain then Bob.
Dems have not had "control of congress" for two years but held a slim majority which was overridden by Presidential vetoes and obstructionist Republicans repeatedly. There can be no improvement when the Republicans continue the same agenda. We need a Democratic President and a majority in both houses to undertake the repairs of 8 years of obstructionist, elite favoring damage to our economy and security.
LOL at criticizing the Democrats for two years of failing to deliver. The GOP's stars were aligned between the White House and Congress for far longer than that - and all they gave us is a teetering economy, a pointless SECOND land war in Asia, a complete failure to accomplish even basic disaster recovery after Katrina, and a Constitution which Bush himself described as "...just a G-D piece of paper" before using it as toilet paper, all in the name of "Freedom!" Apparently only the Second Amendment is important enough to "preserve, protect, and defend." Some president Bush Jr. turned out to be.
Eight years of those swaggering clods is enough. I'll take my chances on Obama.
Republicans now act like the Democrats did 40 years ago.
Democrats now act like Marxist's
My favorite is how he talks about our economy in turmoil as it's growing more and more since the beginning of the year. We're up 3.3% this quarter Obama, way to pay attention. Furthermore, his "tax cuts" for the middle class are basically a big SCREW YOU to the hard working and educated people who have busted their ass to make their life the American dream. By cutting taxes to the "rich" (by the way, apparently "rich" is defined by making over 6 figures, which can't even buy you a house in a decent area in some states), so who is really out of touch here? I'm afraid of Obama being in charge of this nation, he's talking the same pipe dream that Nancy Pelosi was talking before she took control of Congress, and look where that got us. Wake up people, Obama is leading you right into an ideological hell.
"I will do I will do I will do... yet I can not tell you how exactly I will do this do do do."
Blah blah blah...promise the world...
Bill Clinton promised a middle class tax cut during his first campaign and reneged as soon as he was elected.
Obama will do the same.
Off of foreign oil in ten years ? How is that going to happen without drilling, crackhead?
Al Qaeda isn't in Afghanistan as much as it is in Pahkeestahn...are you ready to invade another foreign country, Odumbo?
This guy's proposals are a mile wide and an inch deep.
This guy is a
Nice speach. I dont buy it. Our liberal Congress will get ahold of him and the agenda will change very quickly. He wont be able to move without Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid telling him which way to turn.
“Tonight, more Americans are out of work and more are working harder for less. More of you have lost your homes and more are watching your home values plummet. More of you have cars you can’t afford to drive, credit card bills you can’t afford to pay and tuition that is beyond your reach"
Hmmmmm.....
Unemployment is at it's lowest rate in years. Wrong there.
Most of you have lost your home because you bought more than you could afford and banks gave loans to people that couldn't afford them. Not GW Bush's fault.
If the Democratic Congress would allow domestic short-term drilling, we could get off the foreign import teat and pay our own country (the Evil Oil Companies that employ Americans).
As for the rest of the drivel, how does bringing up people's personal bad financial stewarding have any relation whatsoever to the job of the presidency?
If you fall for this line of fear mongering, you deserve this idiot.
Its time for change. George Bush has been in office for eight years and the country has turned for the worse. Give the new guy a chance John McCain sounds like more of the same.
Ok, Bob, so you are saying that continuing failed policies is a better choice?
This congress was lucky to be able to slow the Bush Administration even a little bit. That is going to change in November.
The responsibility for the mess this country is in lies directly at the feet of Bush-Cheney-McCain and the rest of the Republicans. Republicans had their chance and they blew it big time with greed and unprecedented cronyism and incompetence. Ask the 71% of Americans who agree with me on that, Bob.
Directed at Comment 1
By portraying Obama as someone without a working history in government, without a track record, you are making a grave error in judgement. George W. Bush had far less experience, a more dubious past, and yet we elected him twice. The Democrats in congress and the Senate have been effectively neutered by the President's signing statements.
Hear me out that Obama has a more legitimate voting record than McCain, that he has invested himself at the State level considerably for many, many years, and he's not one to rest on the laurels of pure chance. McCain is a veteran who never ceases to repeat that he was a POW for 5 years, but overcoming prejudice is a challenge that Obama has faced his whole life. And if you look at McCain's character over the last 30 years, you will see a man who's idea of action is bending over to his largest contributers and lobbyists. Is that the alternative you want?
If the Senate Republicans hadn't filibustered every freaking bill in sight, then maybe something could have been accomplished.
Remember how they whined when it was the Democrats doing it to them? Well, the Repubs have smashed the old filibuster record to smithereens and they still have months to go.
Way to go Repubs!
-The lowest level of job creation since 1939.
-Corporate raiders that run our government and give huge tax breaks to big oil.
-Tax breaks for the wealthiest 10% of the population and the failed belief that trickle down economics works.
-Failed foreign policy and a weakening of our standing in the world.
The list goes on and on.... Yes, let's vote 4 more years for a Republican candidate. I will take Obama over a George Bush third term any day of the week.
George Bush or John McCain - There is no difference.
Go Obama!
Just words . . .just jive.
Panderings to the gimme crowd, who never produce or pay.
How sad America has come to this: am empty windbag in love
with himself, "the One", and an old has been, muddling on.
I vote:none of the above. We need a revolution!
Voodoo Economics and Voodoo Foreign Policy...
B-HO as president would get taken advantage of.
Obama seems more concerned about the world view of the USA rather than doing what it takes to keep us safe and maintining our way of life. He would negotiate from a position of weakness with Iran, he wants to surge in Afganistan but can't even admit that the surge worked in Iraq, he want to tax oil companies which will pass the tax onto consumers. He seems to be person who is only concerned with his celebrity. He is not the right person right now.
McCain is hardly my first choice to be president either. His anger management issues are well documented, I sure do not see him lasting 8 years in office, I disagree with his stance on illegal immigration, he does not seem to be the most cheerful of people, he seems to be a reformer but changes his song during the election, his lame attempt to win favor with the Christian right was pitiful.
I guess I am reminded of the line from Othello when one of the charachter says, "You are a senator". It was meant as an insult. Not looking forward this election or the next president if this is what we have to work with.
(1) Bush isn't running for President; McCain is.
(2) Vague references to your childhood will not assure us that we know you, Mr. Obama. In fact, you haven't even served long or well enough for us to know you on a professional level, let alone any personal level.
(3) Blame Bush/Cheney all you want, but it was Pres. Clinton who gave Osama bin Laden a free pass to terrorize our nation's soil, take thousands of lives and orphan thousands of families. Not only that, Pres. Clinton made a mockery of the Oval Office, wagged his finger at the American people and then flat out lied to us about Monica Lewinsky.
I thought that he was running against John McCain. Why is he always talking about Bush. Could it be that he has no concrete ideas? I think so. It is east to voice all the platitudes, but has he ever tried to do any of these things the two years he has occupied his seat in the Senate. I think not.
He is voicing a what he thinks he thinks the people want to hear. The dems want the country in chaos and want the people dependent on Washington so they keep their jobs.
Is the government the solution or the problem?
My fear is that if the Democrats control Congress and the Presidency the only CHANGE we will have will be the coins in our pockets. What is government- 50% efficient at best, and probably far worse?
Electing an inexperienced far left liberal in a time of potential economic peril makes very little sense.
Kennedy said we were going to the moon. Ten years later, we did. America can do anything, we just have to believe that we can, get off our asses, and do it.
Democrats have been in charge of congress for the last 2 years and for the last 2 years George Bush has had a record number of Vetos as a president over that time.... Check the facts.
In the words of Olberman... better get a shovel.
Obama's strengths outweigh McCain's strengths? I don't see that Obama has any strengths. If we need contacts with Hamas, or racists, or terrorists, or if we want someone who is married to someone who hates America, he's our guy. However, no one can name anything that constitutes "experience". Community orgainizing in the dirty pimp Chicago politics does not count. He's all forms, no substance. The only thing more empty than his head is his suit.
Bob: yes, the Democrats have had a majority in Congress the pass 2 years, but NOT control. The Republicans still were able to filibuster and prevent Democrats from taking action, as they did several times. Both sides deserve blame.
As far as Obama, I'm not sure he can deliver on his promises either. But I like the idea of a younger, intelligent president, who surrounds himself with intelligent people ... rather than an older president who seems to be having several "senior moments" as of late, and has a reputation for being short-tempered.
Do we really want a man who has a short temper with his finger on the war button?
Obama is the best hope for this country right now.
GO OBAMA!
Bob, I think you are a cynic whose belifs and ideals and ebedded in the Republican idealism. Its a sham that folks like you are still living in the last century. Please lets face reality and join the ship of success. Obama will take this country places, he will redeem our dignity in the comity of nations. Our economy will be robust again and we will regain the hope of the American dream that had been derailed by the Bush-Cheney policies.
hahahahaha this is hilarious. all the anti-obama people are such haters. please, after you hate, say something that mccain will do better or what he brings to the table that people can rally behind rather than just seem ignorant. PLEASE!
I have a message for ya Barry.... It just ain't gonna fly...Sorry you Chicago thug!
This is a load of garbage. He will say what he needs to say. He says McCain has been in Washington all these years and done little to nothing about the dependency on foreign oil. He needs to check his side; his VP choice has been there LONGER than McCain and done nothing. His ego is big enough to catch him when he falls and that is all he will have left. This entire campaign has been a trip in megalomania.
Whatever. What's new on Youtube????
Unfortunately Barack Hussein Obama lies. The unemployment rate now is lower than that under Clinton. Clinton led the U.S. into the 2000 recession. America is growing, as evidenced by the recent GDP data.
Barack Hussein Obama is in bed with the Terrorist Ayers, and has lied about their associations.
Barack Hussein Obama has never once decried the corrupt politicians of Chicago and Illinois, as he is one of them and they pull his strings.
Barack Hussein Obama received special real estate deals from a convicted felon.
Barack Hussein Obama voted to withhold healthcare from viable aborted infants...yet says he wants healthcare for all. Is that so he can withhold healthcare from overweight African-Americans with diabetes? Or from those who smoke? Or from those who don't share his Marxist views?
Barack Hussein Obama is not an American patriot. He would lie down and let the likes of Iran, Russia, China and Venezuela take our lives and our livelihoods.
Barack Hussein Obama asked the overrun nation of Georgia to show restraint when Russian tanks overran the nation. I suppose he would've told Poland to do the same when Hitler's tanks rolled at the outset of WWII.
These items are truths, not the lies that have been spread in Denver this week. A vote for Barack Hussein Obama is a vote that would cause countless Americans to lose their lives and their security to outside forces.
A vote for Barack Hussein Obama is a vote for those who hate America, and a vote against freedom and Democracy.
Blah, blah, blah. I will play Robin Hood on your behalf, stealing from the haves (those who get up and go to work in the morning), and giving to the have nots (those who look to government for handouts).
"“Four years ago, I stood before you and told you my story – of the brief union between a young man from Kenya and a young woman from Kansas who weren’t well-off or well-known, but shared a belief that in America, their son could achieve whatever he put his mind to." - BO
Actually, Obama's daddy abandoned both him and his mother to go to Harvard, where he met and married yet another wife (while he still had 2 others).
Come on BO, quit telling these fairy tale stories and try to tell the truth.
Words -- Just Words
yada yada yada..if he is elected, his first term will be the longest full time job he ever had! This guy worked as a community organizer in Chicago and what did he accomplished there...nothing...actually something...spent millions of public funds and benefited his friends. His wife is no public service saint. She is making 300,000 dollars a yr for a hospital system that shunts the non-insured to the public hospitals...so much for the public service. I can't believe, even for the democrats, the affirmative action crowd, would select someone who has done so little in his own life and be the nominee for the President of the United States. Imagine someone, let he be black, brown, red, white or yellow, with two yrs of experience as a line manager in Walmart, can he be the CEO of the company the third yr. I don't think so.
Wow. What a lot jerks.
- Are we really ready for this 'fall?" . . . and by the way, are the ruins in
Obama's stage set those of Greece or Rome?
Reading the STUPID attacks against Obama here, it is no wonder America is in decline. He may not be perfect, but if you are too STUPID, to see that he and the Democrats are clearly an improvement over another 8 years of national decline, then you should be ashamed.
The downfall of America is idiot racists and bigots (like those mentioning Obama's middle name repeatedly, "BHO, Hussein blah blah") who are too damn bigoted to see their OWN BEST INTERESTS above their own STUPID bigotry. You morons will be the end of our once great country.
if one more person blames the crappy 8 year leadership of the bush administration on a 2 year democratic congress one more time, oooo!
Nobama's just an empty suit, giving another empty speech.
And yes, I agree with some of the others. What has he done in 3 1/2 years as Senator that leads us to believe he is ready to be President?
Oh, I forgot, he's been running for the presidency for the last 2 of those years.
McCain will wipe the floor with Barry Hussein Obama on election day.
Before the Democrats took over the congress two years ago the economy was sky rocketing, home values were up, we had plenty of jobs, etc.... Nancy Pelosi and the democrats take over in Congress, we are nearly in a recession, people losing their jobs, home values go down, people losing their homes, etc....
So, go ahead you democrats sheep and blame the President, I blame the democrats in Congress. Like it or not, the facts are real, if O. gets elected this country is going down the tubes. When they realize that taxing the rich isn't going to be enough, suddenly somebody making $40000/year will sudddenly be rich. It happened before when Clinton taxed the middle class after he came into office. Oh wait, they were contributions, not taxes!
These comments are meaningless coming from him--they "sound nice"--but they mean nothing. Look at his record, look at his affiliations. Look at the actions or inactions. 140 some odd days in the senate? No real legislative accomplishments. Nothing. "Present!" here I come. Look at how he deals/does not deal with questions--are they substantive responses? Words are just words when actions don't track with them. Obama is a phony. It doesn't matter if he puts on a good show--and that is what you are voting for if you vote for him, Phony-bama.
wow!!!! Obama knows how to say it like it is.....who cares if he can solve everything...if he just makes progress on any one of the things it's better than what we have with the same old same old
obama and his wife are sofull of it. They are black liberals, like reverend wright who hate the US. i don't blame them but just take a trip to africa and suddenly you will become very patriotic. Obama is just lucky he was born here or he may have been in the hut next to his step brother. Please black people get over your hatred and you will be super succesful just like the many africans who come to the usa.
The naysayers are out in force tonight! Your GOP precinct captains must have said they'd buy pizza for you after a tough day slaving over a hot keyboard.
It's really quite simple - Obama says we are a better country than this. McCain, and the GOP, say we are not.
America has always achieved greatness by being challenged. But the GOP says everything is hunky-dory, and pay no attention to the man behind the curtain. Just go back to watching "American Idol" and leave the driving to us.
The choice is OURS, America. We can answer the call and accept the challenge to be better, or hit the snooze button and sign up for four more years of the same.
All of you with your negativity and cynicism are a disgrace to the Republican party.
Since when did we become the party of tearing others down to make ourselves look good. I see Barack putting out idea after idea about how to change things. Do I agree with all of them? No.. but all McCain has done is tear down Barack. Has he offered any changes? No. All he has done is try to make us feel good about the big mistake we made with George Bush.
When we use Baracks name as a slur, it just makes us look ignorant and spiteful.
We ARE better than that.. well, at least I thought so..
Republicans for Obama.. "Following bad leaders is not Patriotism"
(4) McCain and you, Mr. Obama (that is, when you did vote), voted differently the majority of the time. That's good enough for me.
(5) Progress and jobs? What about the ridiculous amount of money that was overspent on a failing welfare system? How is that encouraging people towards jobs?
(6) Dems and jobs you say? Hmmm. Didn't Clinton push through NAFTA?
(7) Measuring the strength of our economy by business start-ups, you say? From what little you have shared with us, Mr. Obama, you will KILL small business with your plans.
Keep the Change!!! The only experience he has is running for office. Obama spent most of his second term as a state senator running for the US Senate. After 144 days of experience as a US Senator he decides to run for president. When Obama is defeated in November it will show that as socialist you can get elected by the government dependant south side of Chicago and southern Illinois but when it comes to the national stage this type of candidate no matter how neatly packaged will get trounced every time.
sorry but I am lost! On one side i like what i hear, but looking on hysterical obsessed mr. Obama supporters, i am discussed. Listening "sisters" from mrs. Hillary C camp makes me sick.
On other side religious bible belt is so infantile including naive flag viewers in back ground..... what now???
Be afraid, be very afraid. Even if you assume that Obama is really a moderate with the best intentions, he is politically weak inside the Beltway -- just like Carter. The shots will becalled by Nancy "Save The Planet" Pelosi and Harry "The War is Lost" Reid, as well as the other leftist bulls in Congress. And these people are whacked. And as a member of the middle class, I resent the notion that I am part of the Joad family and that I need Uncle Sam to help me with my life. That's a bunch of crap. Yes, we have problems, but we do not and should not fundamentally remake our economy to address them -- but that is exactly what he proposes to do. God help us if The Messiah is elected. I'll take a war hero over a community organizer any day of the week.
Love the liberal rhetoric. What a joke. How could anyone actually be taken with this guy? All emotion and charisma. No substance. He will take us down the socialist path. Shame on those who support him without actually understanding his philosophy.
Wait, GDP up 3.3%, lower unemplyment rate than the Clinton years, less poverty than the Clinton years...What is he taling about???
WELL DONE, Barack Obama; well done. Too many nay-sayers are invested in looking at the glass 'half-empty', due to the last 8 years of shame and lies. Those who have a vested interest in keeping things just the way they are will, no doubt, rally against Obama; those who see and KNOW that radical change for the good of our country CAN AND WILL BE OBTAINED by the help of Barack Obama, will totally understand and support him.
Thanks for reading my 2-cents' worth of rant!
Good speech. The ineptitude, arrogance and ignorance of the Republican Party has finally lead to its demise. Good riddance. We hope to have the country back in a decent shape for your children and grandchildren. Really GOP, you can't be proud of what you've done.
great point, most americans tend to live out of their means these days, especially we twenty something and younger generations. i admit i was one, i had it all, a house, a new car, everything. well, eventually it all caught up to me and i am happy living a simple life as a single dad without dealing with POLIDICKS! No matter who you elect of the two, there is no difference. Although, I do believe Putin's idea that the Georgia conflict was escalated by some silly Republican. But hey, if he selected Pawlenty, the guy I really love to hate :-) [I'm in MN] AWESOME because that guy made it possible to get a conceal carry permit here and Americans need more of those, indeed!
Let's give the brother a chance. Let's face it, you have to play party politics to get into office. Don't hate the player, hate the game. I am sure that once inside the oval office (and he WILL be elected) Barack will do all he can to change this country for the better. It cannot get any worse than it already is ... Bush has Fu@&ed this country up ...
Ha ha ha! -- If the Democrats control the House, the Senate, AND have the Presidency (Not unlikely, should Obama win) - then The comparisons to the past democratic majority's inability to move forward progressively will be moot. --
It seems odd that there's a parallel between (1) LBJ's great society after Kennedy's assassination and the influx of greater protectionism for Americans after a foreign war and (2) the gutting of the American economy after another fruitless foreign war abroad. -- As a betting man, like it or not, it does seem like the democrats have the potential to drastically alter the future of America. While I remain uncertain as to whether I believe in Obama's full potential for the sweeping changes he claims he will make, I can't deny his campaign's might.
The President (Bush, Clinton, Carter, Reagan, Kennedy, Johnson) doesn't make laws. Congress does. If you are fed up with what has happened the last 16 years look to Congress. Clinton's best economic years were when the Republicans gained control of Congress in 1994. His democrat buddies did not help him in 1992-1994. I will admit Bush let the Republican controlled Congress spend like drunks from 2000-2006 and that was wrong - but the democrats piled on the spending at the same time. Since the democrats have had control (2006) my life has gotten worse under democrat control and it has absolutely nothing to do with the Presidency. Look at the poll numbers for Congress - worse than the president's - what does that say about our government. Doesn't matter who is president - it matters who is in Congress. And even more it doesn't matter who is VP. I find it ironic that Biden is supposed to handle the experience Obama is missing but for 7 years people have trashed Bush for allegedly letting Cheney run the country. What is the difference? Is Biden going to run foreign policy?
HaHa...I seriously feel like someone is going to say "hey you're on candid camera" This guy Obama is a freakin joke! He has no substance and no track record and his policies are all lies...why don't we all sit around a campfire eating gum drops and jelly beans and sing coom-bai-yaa...this is not a socialist country we are based on capitalism...work hard and keep your money....I wish Dems knew how much the rich actually paid in taxes so they can shut up and stop talking about Bush's tax cuts are bad for America.
After the Democrats and Republicans have sucessfully divided the country with their pet liberal or conservative issues...and the election is over...it will once again be government as usual: Government for the big corporations...government by the big corporations...and government of the big corporations...and, until a real election reform is put into place, the people will...once again... be screwed!
And exactly what "action" was done by the Republicans", who controlled the White House, and for a large portion of the last 8 years, the senate?
Pick the topic:
- Economy (Housing crisis; gas was $1.50 / gal when Bush took office)
- Emergency Mgmt (Katrina)
- Fiscal Mgmt (started with $100 bil. surplus, ended with $500 bil. deficit)
- Energy: ignoring investment in alternative energy technologies
- Global Warming (must not exist b/c there's no chapter about it in Bush's Bible)
- Defending torture as a legitimate means of interrogation of potential enemies
- Plummeting standing of the USA in the global community
- I could go on and on and you know it
If you aren't embarrassed by what the Republicans did while they have been in power then you haven't been paying attention or have been drinking way to much neo-conservative ideology kool-aid. Republicans don't deserve another shot at the presidency and more than the Democrats did after Carter in 1980.
Well written speech but thats all it is for now. A Speech!! Change!! Change!! Thats all we hear. Where are the policies?? How will you end the war??? How will you pay for Universal Health Care??? No drilling!! Maybe some drilling!! Tax cuts!! No tax cuts!! There are just so many unknowns. I think he has to stop dreaming and start getting more specific with his polices. There have been plenty of mistakes by our government over the last 16 years. Republicans and Democrats to blame. We cant afford to just Dream of change we have to follow through......an undecided Independant.....
I just wish Obama had the same republican mindset as Kennedy. Low taxes... strong military... limited government. Instead he's lured 80,000 people to Denver with their hands out for government entitlements I'll be paying for.
Somebody wake me up when this radical nightmare is over.
HEY ARRONP808! GWB has vetoed 12 bills since 01/19/01, guess how many the fair haired boy from hope the philander vetoed in the same amount of time 37. Nice try, but there hasn't been a spending bill GWB hasn't liked I'm surprised at you libs GWB should be a key note speaker not the same old tired line that frankly is boring and predicable. B-HO might as well promise a chicken for every pot while he's at it too tonight.
I hope there is more to it than this. Seriously, there is not enough here to warrant the large arena and huge temple to self.

(8) McCain has always fought to cut spending, increase jobs in the US, and deregulate. McCain had nothing to do with the amount of oil Americans use and import. That's just nuts.
(9) Want to conserve energy and ridiculous spending, Mr. Obama? Why not rethink that temple you built to yourself at Invesco and think about those supporters who gave sacrificially to your campaign, or the hundreds of thousands that could have put an impoverished family's child through your Harvard alma mater?
(10) Where's this 150 billion coming from? The middle class and the backs of small business?
just more of the same ole same ole from the dems. this is the same speech we heard fom kerry, dukakis, and the rest.... everything is horrible and the goverment will come to save you. it's as though we're all okies in the 'grapes of wrath' choking on dust. it's a very tired scenario. most folks in this country are doing just fine.. if not completely spoiled. the people in trouble are, as always, those who are living beyond their means or those who don't try to succeed at all. i'd like him to explain how he plans to cut taxes while at the same time having billions of dollars to throw around on this program or that project without gutting the military and taxing businesses out of existence. where does he think jobs come from ? magic job-land ?? i say we send this fellow back to his crime-ridden south side neighborhood where he can do some more 'organizing'. NObama.
You Baaah Baaah Bama sheep are so predictable, Obama promises you FREE this and FREE that paid for by ""others"", that's all you need to hear..........Socialism is alive and well in the Democrat Party...........Vote McCain.........Not Hussein
Its incredibly astonishing to me to see how willing this many Americans are to be dependent upon government for their every need! I think obama will lose in a landslide because the majority of Americans won't elect anyone to be Prez who hates America. But to see this many Americans of like mind means to me that the change we need is a revolution whereby we take back the schools at all levels and re-institute the 3 R's. It'll restore people to individual thought and the desire to be free, to think for themselves, to not succumb to elitist propaganda whereby those with power determine the lives of those they cheat, lie to and steal from.
Remember, government is made up of people who want power for themselves but not you!
Nice words. Inspiring to read and not doubt they will be delivered with Obama's soaring elocution. But come on. . . Joe and Barack are two very liberal Senators, one with considerable experience in getting his way in Congress (Joe - oh, and who voted for the Iraq invasion) and one whose ability to lead is patently unclear and untested. His speech talks (falsely) about the 10% difference between McCain and Bush then, in a flight of hyperbole that would any high-school debate coach proud, says "I’m not ready to take a ten percent chance on change." Well is America ready to take a chance on Barack's inexperience? Does his character - and the associations that are a clue to character - resonate? I don't think so.
I'm still waiting for my "middle class tax cut" promised to me by Bill Clinton in 1996. This is full of the same old song and dance from a Democrat. America is bad, were the cause of all the suffering, we should be like Europe, indoctrinate our children on the splendors of Socialist, "Robin Hood" mentality. Democrats had control of the White House, and both houses for most of the past 50 years. Why haven't we seen and end to poverty, lower college tuition, an end to disease and war as they always promise? When has ANY politician really delivered on their campaign promises anyway? Pure rhetoric pablum
.
This is more of "A chicken in every pot" FDR speak. But you don't get that chicken unless we give it to you via a government program. Socialism 101.
Promise all you want. But show me what you have accomplished in the last 10 years that shows you deserve my VOTE. So far all I have heard you Boast about is being a community activist?????
