Obama: 'We are a better country than this'

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor August 28, 2008 10:40 PM

Senator Barack Obama promised change -- and spelled out specifics such as tax cuts for the middle class and an end to dependence on foreign oil in 10 years -- as he accepted the Democratic presidential nomination tonight.

Obama also warned that Republican John McCain would mean four more years of President Bush's flawed policies, declaring “America, we are better than these last eight years. We are a better country than this.”

Here are excerpts of the speech, titled "The American Promise," just released by Obama's campaign:

“Four years ago, I stood before you and told you my story – of the brief union between a young man from Kenya and a young woman from Kansas who weren’t well-off or well-known, but shared a belief that in America, their son could achieve whatever he put his mind to.

“It is that promise that has always set this country apart – that through hard work and sacrifice, each of us can pursue our individual dreams but still come together as one American family, to ensure that the next generation can pursue their dreams as well.

“It is why I stand here tonight. Because for two hundred and thirty two years, at each moment when that promise was in jeopardy, ordinary men and women – students and soldiers, farmers and teachers, nurses and janitors -- found the courage to keep it alive.

“We meet at one of those defining moments – a moment when our nation is at war, our economy is in turmoil, and the American promise has been threatened once more.

“Tonight, more Americans are out of work and more are working harder for less. More of you have lost your homes and more are watching your home values plummet. More of you have cars you can’t afford to drive, credit card bills you can’t afford to pay and tuition that is beyond your reach

“These challenges are not all of government’s making. But the failure to respond is a direct result of a broken politics in Washington and the failed presidency of George W. Bush.

“America, we are better than these last eight years. We are a better country than this.”

***

“This moment – this election – is our chance to keep, in the 21st century, the American promise alive. Because next week, in Minnesota, the same party that brought you two terms of George Bush and Dick Cheney will ask this country for a third. And we are here because we love this country too much to let the next four years look just like the last eight. On November 4th, we must stand up and say: “Eight is enough.”

“Now let there be no doubt. The Republican nominee, John McCain, has worn the uniform of our country with bravery and distinction, and for that we owe him our gratitude and respect. And next week, we’ll also hear about those occasions when he’s broken with his party as evidence that he can deliver the change that we need.

“But the record’s clear: John McCain has voted with George Bush ninety percent of the time. Senator McCain likes to talk about judgment, but really, what does it say about your judgment when you think George Bush was right more than ninety percent of the time? I don’t know about you, but I’m not ready to take a ten percent chance on change.”

***
“You see, we Democrats have a very different measure of what constitutes progress in this country.

“We measure progress by how many people can find a job that pays the mortgage; whether you can put away a little extra money at the end of each month so that you can someday watch your child receive her diploma. We measure progress in the 23 million new jobs that were created when Bill Clinton was President – when the average American family saw its income go up $7,500 instead of down $2,000 like it has under George Bush.

“We measure the strength of our economy not by the number of billionaires we have or the profits of the Fortune 500, but by whether someone with a good idea can take a risk and start a business, or whether the waitress who lives on tips can take a day off to look after a sick kid without losing her job – an economy that honors the dignity of work.

“The fundamentals we use to measure economic strength are whether we are living up to that fundamental promise that has made this country great – a promise that is the only reason I am standing here tonight.”

***

“That’s the promise we need to keep. That’s the change we need right now. So let me spell out exactly what that change would mean if I am President.
.
“Change means a tax code that doesn’t reward the lobbyists who wrote it, but the American workers and small businesses who deserve it.

“Unlike John McCain, I will stop giving tax breaks to corporations that ship our jobs overseas, and I will start giving them to companies that create good jobs right here in America.

“I will eliminate capital gains taxes for the small businesses and the start-ups that will create the high-wage, high-tech jobs of tomorrow.

“I will cut taxes – cut taxes – for 95% of all working families. Because in an economy like this, the last thing we should do is raise taxes on the middle-class.

“And for the sake of our economy, our security, and the future of our planet, I will set a clear goal as President: in ten years, we will finally end our dependence on oil from the Middle East.

“Washington has been talking about our oil addiction for the last thirty years, and John McCain has been there for twenty-six of them. In that time, he’s said no to higher fuel-efficiency standards for cars, no to investments in renewable energy, no to renewable fuels. And today, we import triple the amount of oil as the day that Senator McCain took office.

“Now is the time to end this addiction, and to understand that drilling is a stop-gap measure, not a long-term solution. Not even close.

“As President, I will tap our natural gas reserves, invest in clean coal technology, and find ways to safely harness nuclear power. I’ll help our auto companies re-tool, so that the fuel-efficient cars of the future are built right here in America. I’ll make it easier for the American people to afford these new cars. And I’ll invest $150 billion over the next decade in affordable, renewable sources of energy – wind power and solar power and the next generation of biofuels; an investment that will lead to new industries and five million new jobs that pay well and can’t ever be outsourced.”

***

“We are the party of Roosevelt. We are the party of Kennedy. So don’t tell me that Democrats won’t defend this country. Don’t tell me that Democrats won’t keep us safe. The Bush-McCain foreign policy has squandered the legacy that generations of Americans -- Democrats and Republicans – have built, and we are to restore that legacy.

“As Commander-in-Chief, I will never hesitate to defend this nation, but I will only send our troops into harm’s way with a clear mission and a sacred commitment to give them the equipment they need in battle and the care and benefits they deserve when they come home.

“I will end this war in Iraq responsibly, and finish the fight against al Qaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan. I will rebuild our military to meet future conflicts. But I will also renew the tough, direct diplomacy that can prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. I will build new partnerships to defeat the threats of the 21st century: terrorism and nuclear proliferation; poverty and genocide; climate change and disease. And I will restore our moral standing so that America is once more the last, best hope for all who are called to the cause of freedom, who long for lives of peace, and who yearn for a better future.”

  1. Nice talk but I don't think he can deliver on the promises in his speech.
Lots of talk but no track record.
THe democrats have had 2 years of control of the congres and haven't delivered either. Sorry but gas prices exploded about tow years ago and we see no action from any of the democrats.

And, why hasn't the Democrats done some of these things over the past three and a half years???

  1. Bob, don't forget the prez has to sign a bill to make it law. The dems can't pass anything with Bush in office. He even veto'd the SCHIP bill for children's health insurance for crying out loud. I agree that the dems haven't done much. But reality is reality and it's gridlock - until January!

  1. He is better when politics are out of the issue i.e. attacking John McCain doesn't come across as natural as talking about improving lives and a better future.

Despite a life long Republican and strongest of strong Bush supporters, I think Obama's strength's out weigh McCains...

  1. Very true Bob, no action...like driving this country into a ditch, as Bush has done. That's the Republican idea of "action"...I'd rather have someone who will just talk and sit on his hands than the moron who has backed up his stupid ideas with stupid actions for the past 8 years

  1. Obama continues to deride offshore drilling. Hey, B.O., if offshore drilling HAS NO EFFECT ON OIL PRICES, then why does a hurricane simply passing through the gulf for a few days cause the proce of oil to go up.

Don't worry though, Barack will give speeches as president that will prevent hurricanes from affecting oil production so there's no need to drill any more.

  1. No action? The man hasn't even been elected president yet!

Turn off the Karl Rove Kool-Aid tap!

Now that I think about it though, when you say "lots of talk but no action" you actually hit the nail on the head.

It's a perfect description of the last eight years of the Bush misadminsitration!

    But it happened.

Republicans love to focus on the Congress and what they haven't done.
BUSH IS THE PRESIDENT. It's not too complex to understand.

What happened to Harry Truman's motto, 'The buck stops here'?

  1. Make it easier for small businesses by placing a $15,000 employee tax to pay for your universal and socialistic health care? Get real.

Eliminate capital gains taxes on small businesses? What does that mean? If you invest in small businesses then you won't have a capital gains tax? Or if you start a small business, you won't have to pay the capital gains tax on any of your investments (what a loop hole that would be)? The only mention of capital gains taxes is that you have intended to not raise them "any further" than the Clinton era of 28%, and qualified that statement by saying that it might settle around 20%. Way to really encourage investment by making it more expensive and less profitable to do so. The amount of people that will immediately start selling their long-term investments in order to ensure they're only taxed at 15% will be scary the day after the election.

That speech has no more substance behind it than the phony "Parthenon" backdrop BO has decided to deliver his speech in front of. I guess BO has the approval of Zeus and the Gods. Ridiculous.

  1. I agree with you, Bob. I'm a conservative, first; Republican second. This country can't afford to go so far to the liberal left...and the people voting for him don't really know what's going to hit them (and their wallets) if he's elected. I'm scared for myself and my country if Obama gets in the White House. I don't agree with McCain on a lot of the issues, but I do know this...he will keep terrorists at bay, bring our troops home with a victory, and will serve this country proudly. I'll stake my reputation on that...and that's why he'll get my vote. And, I'm not one of the "jump on the bandwagon" people like so many of the Obama followers are. I've spent the last year (maybe more) studying issues on both sides and what's best for this country. I wouldn't vote otherwise. It scares me that so many people voting for Obama don't have a clue what he stands for. Heck, I'm not sure Obama even knows what he stands for. I guess "winging it" will work for him.

  1. Yo, Bob. How many times in the last two years has the Republican minority in the Senate blocked Democratic measures on critical issues? Control of Congress means nothing without 60 votes in the Senate (does anyone really think that new filibuster rules have actually helped our governing process??).

Contrary to your concept, we need more Democratic control in order to get things done. The Republicans had their chance to govern from 1994 to 2006 and they blew it trying to establish a permanent majority rather than governing the country.

Time to give the other guys a real chance.

This is a lame speech and certainly doesn't rise to the level that requires a stadium or all this fanfare. He'll finish the fight against al queda. Yea, sure. I doubt he knows a platoon from battalion. A President Obama will be just as ineffective as Clinton's sorry years.

  1. Bob, a party controlled Congress doesn't really control congress without a President of the same party - unless they have a veto-proof super majority. Congress can't do anything unless it's already made a deal with the White House - or else it's not worth doing until they, hopefully, can secure the White House for themselves. Until then, Congress is stuck waiting around for that White House or that super majority - then you will see change, whether it be good or bad.

So basically, even though these problems aren't the government's fault, the government should fix them. Another way of putting that is, the fault lies with people who spent more than they earned, and Obama is going to make the fiscally responsible people pay for it.

I really like Obama as a person, but stuff like this makes it hard for me to vote for him...

  1. Outrageous!! Here in Democratic controlled California we are on the verge of bankruptcy. We finally have had to bring in a Republican Governor to try to sort through the financial mess. In New York, it wasn't until they brought in Republican Rudy Guliani that there was any change in the crime infested and decaying city.

Up until the Democrats controlled the congress 2 years ago, the economy was booming. Wall street was at record highs. The dive in wall street, the housing crisis (which came about as a direct result of a Democratic initiate to force banks to lend to high risk people) and record high gas prices all occurred after Democrats took control.. and squandered 2 years in bickering and finger pointing.

  1. Some people didn't think he would be able to stand here tonight and give this speech, so whether or not you believe he can deliver, is irrelevant.
The fact is Senator Obama has a proven track record of improving the lives of the American people, and he will be an excellent President of these United States.
Having a majority in congress doesn't mean a thing when we have a President who uses his veto pen more than any other President in history. Together, a President Obama and a majority of Democrats in congress can and will deliver.
Vote Obama for a better and brighter future for America.

They continue to reach out with evil talons to scratch the backs of the those who backed them knowing full well they would reward them. They rewarded the oil companies, they rewarded the wealthiest of Americans, and they lied to the people to get a war resulting in countless dead. History will never be kind to this Mafia, and the ringleaders who concocted and fabricated lies. 232 years, and in less than 8, this band of thugs have robbed the citizen of rights, freedoms, and hopes all the while protecting them and their cronies.

The government can not bail every person out who is irresponsible enough to place themselves in debt up to their eye balls (i.e. buying cars they can't afford or run up unpayable amounts of credit card debt). I am curious what Obama would do with the USSR... sorry I meant Russia, and exactly what he means by "I will end this war in Iraq responsibly." Yeah, more of the same National Socialism (read: Neo-Communist) collectivist garbage that's poisoned Federalism in this country.

Big Brother does not know best. Barrack Obama and his allies need to get their filthy hands out of the wallets and businesses of the American Citizens. We do a great job for ourselves, thank you very much. Government is not the solution to our problems as a nation, but rather the greater cause of most of them - as well as a constant enabler / apologist for the failings of individuals. The solution is to let Americans take care of themselves, their families, and their neighbors. The strength of the American spirit lies in her independent, hard-working, and moral citizenry - not her Public Sector overrun with lawyers, politicians, and lobbyists.

The GOP's stars were aligned between the White House and Congress for far longer than that - and all they gave us is a teetering economy, a pointless SECOND land war in Asia, a complete failure to accomplish even basic disaster recovery after Katrina, and a Constitution which Bush himself described as "...just a G-D piece of paper" before using it as toilet paper, all in the name of "Freedom!" Furthermore, his "tax cuts" for the middle class are basically a big SCREW YOU to the hard working and educated people who have busted their ass to make their life the American dream. By cutting taxes to the "rich" (by the way, apparently "rich" is defined by making over 6 figures, which can't even buy you a house in a decent area in some states), so who is really out of touch here? I'm afraid of Obama being in charge of this nation, he's talking the same pipe dream that Nancy Pelosi was talking before she took control of Congress, and look where that got us. 1. Ok, Bob, so you are saying that continuing failed policies is a better choice?

This congress was lucky to be able to slow the Bush Administration even a little bit. That is going to change in November.

The responsibility for the mess this country is in lies directly at the feet of Bush-Cheney-McCain and the rest of the Republicans. Republicans had their chance and they blew it big time with greed and unprecedented cronyism and incompetence. Ask the 71% of Americans who agree with me on that, Bob.

By portraying Obama as someone without a working history in government, without a track record, you are making a grave error in judgement. George W. Bush had far less experience, a more dubious past, and yet we elected him twice. The Democrats in congress and the Senate have been effectively neutered by the President's signing statements.

Hear me out that Obama has a more legitimate voting record than McCain, that he has invested himself at the State level considerably for many, many years, and he's not one to rest on the laurels of pure chance. McCain is a veteran who never ceases to repeat that he was a POW for 5 years, but overcoming prejudice is a challenge that Obama has faced his whole life. And if you look at McCain's character over the last 30 years, you will see a man who's idea of action is bending over to his largest contributers and lobbyists. Is that the alternative you want?

  1. If the Senate Republicans hadn't filibustered every freaking bill in sight, then maybe something could have been accomplished.

Remember how they whined when it was the Democrats doing it to them? Well, the Repubs have smashed the old filibuster record to smithereens and they still have months to go.

    Way to go Repubs!

-Failed foreign policy and a weakening of our standing in the world.
The list goes on and on.... Yes, let's vote 4 more years for a Republican candidate. I will take Obama over a George Bush third term any day of the week.

Obama seems more concerned about the world view of the USA rather than doing what it takes to keep us safe and maintining our way of life. He would negotiate from a position of weakness with Iran, he wants to surge in Afganistan but can't even admit that the surge worked in Iraq, he want to tax oil companies which will pass the tax onto consumers. He seems to be person who is only concerned with his celebrity. He is not the right person right now.
McCain is hardly my first choice to be president either. His anger management issues are well documented, I sure do not see him lasting 8 years in office, I disagree with his stance on illegal immigration, he does not seem to be the most cheerful of people, he seems to be a reformer but changes his song during the election, his lame attempt to win favor with the Christian right was pitiful.
I guess I am reminded of the line from Othello when one of the charachter says, "You are a senator". It was meant as an insult. Not looking forward this election or the next president if this is what we have to work with.

    (2) Vague references to your childhood will not assure us that we know you, Mr. Obama. In fact, you haven't even served long or well enough for us to know you on a professional level, let alone any personal level.

    (3) Blame Bush/Cheney all you want, but it was Pres. Clinton who gave Osama bin Laden a free pass to terrorize our nation's soil, take thousands of lives and orphan thousands of families. Not only that, Pres. Clinton made a mockery of the Oval Office, wagged his finger at the American people and then flat out lied to us about Monica Lewinsky.

It is east to voice all the platitudes, but has he ever tried to do any of these things the two years he has occupied his seat in the Senate. I think not.

He is voicing a what he thinks he thinks the people want to hear. The dems want the country in chaos and want the people dependent on Washington so they keep their jobs.

As far as Obama, I'm not sure he can deliver on his promises either. But I like the idea of a younger, intelligent president, who surrounds himself with intelligent people ... rather than an older president who seems to be having several "senior moments" as of late, and has a reputation for being short-tempered.

  1. Unfortunately Barack Hussein Obama lies. The unemployment rate now is lower than that under Clinton. Clinton led the U.S. into the 2000 recession. America is growing, as evidenced by the recent GDP data.

Barack Hussein Obama is in bed with the Terrorist Ayers, and has lied about their associations.

Barack Hussein Obama has never once decried the corrupt politicians of Chicago and Illinois, as he is one of them and they pull his strings.

Barack Hussein Obama received special real estate deals from a convicted felon.

Barack Hussein Obama voted to withhold healthcare from viable aborted infants...yet says he wants healthcare for all. Is that so he can withhold healthcare from overweight African-Americans with diabetes? Or from those who smoke? Or from those who don't share his Marxist views?

Barack Hussein Obama is not an American patriot. He would lie down and let the likes of Iran, Russia, China and Venezuela take our lives and our livelihoods.

Barack Hussein Obama asked the overrun nation of Georgia to show restraint when Russian tanks overran the nation. I suppose he would've told Poland to do the same when Hitler's tanks rolled at the outset of WWII.

These items are truths, not the lies that have been spread in Denver this week. A vote for Barack Hussein Obama is a vote that would cause countless Americans to lose their lives and their security to outside forces.

A vote for Barack Hussein Obama is a vote for those who hate America, and a vote against freedom and Democracy.

It's really quite simple - Obama says we are a better country than this. McCain, and the GOP, say we are not.

America has always achieved greatness by being challenged. But the GOP says everything is hunky-dory, and pay no attention to the man behind the curtain. Just go back to watching "American Idol" and leave the driving to us.

It seems odd that there's a parallel between (1) LBJ's great society after Kennedy's assassination and the influx of greater protectionism for Americans after a foreign war and (2) the gutting of the American economy after another fruitless foreign war abroad. -- As a betting man, like it or not, it does seem like the democrats have the potential to drastically alter the future of America. While I remain uncertain as to whether I believe in Obama's full potential for the sweeping changes he claims he will make, I can't deny his campaign's might.

Clinton's best economic years were when the Republicans gained control of Congress in 1994. His democrat buddies did not help him in 1992-1994. I will admit Bush let the Republican controlled Congress spend like drunks from 2000-2006 and that was wrong - but the democrats piled on the spending at the same time. Since the democrats have had control (2006) my life has gotten worse under democrat control and it has absolutely nothing to do with the Presidency. Look at the poll numbers for Congress - worse than the president's - what does that say about our government. Doesn't matter who is president - it matters who is in Congress. And even more it doesn't matter who is VP. I find it ironic that Biden is supposed to handle the experience Obama is missing but for 7 years people have trashed Bush for allegedly letting Cheney run the country. What is the difference? Is Biden going to run foreign policy?

    Pick the topic:
    - Economy (Housing crisis; gas was $1.50 / gal when Bush took office)
    - Emergency Mgmt (Katrina)
    - Fiscal Mgmt (started with $100 bil. surplus, ended with $500 bil. deficit)
    - Energy: ignoring investment in alternative energy technologies
    - Global Warming (must not exist b/c there's no chapter about it in Bush's Bible)
    - Defending torture as a legitimate means of interrogation of potential enemies
    - Plummeting standing of the USA in the global community
    - I could go on and on and you know it

If you aren't embarrassed by what the Republicans did while they have been in power then you haven't been paying attention or have been drinking way to much neo-conservative ideology kool-aid. Why not rethink that temple you built to yourself at Invesco and think about those supporters who gave sacrificially to your campaign, or the hundreds of thousands that could have put an impoverished family's child through your Harvard alma mater?
    (10) Where's this 150 billion coming from? The middle class and the backs of small business?

I think obama will lose in a landslide because the majority of Americans won't elect anyone to be Prez who hates America. But to see this many Americans of like mind means to me that the change we need is a revolution whereby we take back the schools at all levels and re-institute the 3 R's. It'll restore people to individual thought and the desire to be free, to think for themselves, to not succumb to elitist propaganda whereby those with power determine the lives of those they cheat, lie to and steal from.
Remember, government is made up of people who want power for themselves but not you!

  1. Nice words. Inspiring to read and not doubt they will be delivered with Obama's soaring elocution. But come on. . . Joe and Barack are two very liberal Senators, one with considerable experience in getting his way in Congress (Joe - oh, and who voted for the Iraq invasion) and one whose ability to lead is patently unclear and untested. His speech talks (falsely) about the 10% difference between McCain and Bush then, in a flight of hyperbole that would any high-school debate coach proud, says "I’m not ready to take a ten percent chance on change." Well is America ready to take a chance on Barack's inexperience? Does his character - and the associations that are a clue to character - resonate? I don't think so.

America is bad, were the cause of all the suffering, we should be like Europe, indoctrinate our children on the splendors of Socialist, "Robin Hood" mentality. Democrats had control of the White House, and both houses for most of the past 50 years. Why haven't we seen and end to poverty, lower college tuition, an end to disease and war as they always promise? When has ANY politician really delivered on their campaign promises anyway? He gives a great speech, but no chance any of his promises will go anywhere. They question whether Democrats are true patriots. As Jon Stewart put it, "We all know that the Republicans love America-- They just hate half the people living here."

Bush and Cheney make me ashamed to be an American. They've put this country in the crapper, while their buddies at Haliburton and Exxon enjoy record profits quarter after quarter. I've never seen such naked graft in my lifetime. They LIED to push our country into a war no one wanted and because of it, 5,000 kids have come home in body bags.

Fact of the matter is, McCain probably won't be in office in 4 years, because he'll be dead from the cancer he continues to cover-up.

I take solace in the fact that after they die, Bush, Cheney and Karl Rove will spend an eternity in the lowest level of hell getting butt raped by the devil 24/7!

From the man who promised to END the Bush tax cuts? 95% of us will get a tax cut but wait..only 40% of this country actually pays ANY tax..hmmm. C'mon people,he's a CHICAGO STREET ORGANIZER, a black liberation theologist slash marxist to the core. Mainstreet America, if you indeed watch this speech, just TRY and keep track of all his policy reversals .. Nuclear now? Clean coal? uh huh. And now he favors drilling as well? Nonsense. Pretty, but utter nonsense. He assumes you're ALL fools who will lap it up. He assumes you're all schmucks, suffering mightily from latent white guilt but still capable of putting the ring through your own nose... America IS facing tough challenges, not the least of which is the social security time bomb but Obama's answers to this and other challenges is, at best, hopelessly naive and collectivist in remedy. Are we,after 200+ years of proving to the world the true power of individualism, capitalism, and self determination..are we going to give the reins to a man who incontravertibly believes GOVERNMENT has ALL the answers, and moreover IS the answer? Are we to give the most powerful post in the world to a man who had 300 (THREE HUNDRED!) bullet point advisors doing his thinking for him on his european coronation tour? Unqualified seems too frail a word for this charlatan's resume.

A hurricane approaching the Gulf impacts oil prices not because of the off shore drilling, but because of the locations where oil tankers unload. The two are unrelated. If there were offshore oil wells in Rhode Island, and a hurricane were approaching Rhode Island, there would be no impact on oil prices.

As far as the buck stopping at the President, well, it's gotta get to him first. And it's got to go through Congress to do that.

Report came out yesterday saying average income is now higher than in 2000. Don't remember if that's mean or median, but before you complain about it all going to the rich, remember that we also have a few million more illegals, who tend to be poor. (Quite your crying, I'm talking about the effects on statistics.)

Roosevelt and Kennedy are pre-68. This is a post-68 Democratic Party. With all due respect, there's no real hope for the Democrats as a pro-America party until the last Baby Boomer gives up the ghost.

Kennedy's administration did put a man on the moon. The question you now need to ask is at what cost. That's the adult question. It's the mature question. And when you go back and look, you'll find that that's exactly why we haven't gone back. It was crazy expensive to do it. We did it as a pissing contest with the Soviets.

Am I glad we did? Yes. Because unlike a very large portion of the Democratic Party, I'm not sympathetic to Socialism. But you have to look at the costs.

Hell, now people are angry that they get to keep some of their hard earned money. The group that has kept this country moving (Middle Class) is finally getting some attention under Obama. Go ahead, vote McCain, I dare you. I guess more pain will deliver us from the evil we are pump faking to elect.

  1. It's a shame that neither party understands the dynamics of the economy. He quotes statistics about growth under Bill Clinton, but the economy actually broke out of a recession before Clinton took office. There is no way that he can guarantee Americans that they will be richer simply by virtue of a Democrat controling the Oval Office. What is he basing this on? Will vague promises of tax cuts to middle class Americans and tax hikes on the rich ones who are more likely to employ workers fix all of this. Is it really right to try to control where jobs go with arbitrary taxation policies.

  1. The last time government tried to legislate alternative energy we got quotas for ethanol mandated to be made from domestic corn which consumed as much gas to produce as it generated and drove up the price of gas, corn and all food. It was subsidized which increased the deficit and reduced available resources for other promising technologies. Cheaper ethanol from saw grass or from Brazil was banned! And now that the facts are known, the congress while not stop the increase in quotas for next year.

Let science and the free market determine which alternatives will be successful. Congress should stick to screwing up things they know such as tax policy.

His advisors never disagreed with him and offered differing opinions because he was so charasmatic. They fixed their mind set and didn't disagree. Kennedy would have listened, but the people around had a certain mindset regarding his abilities...how could be wrong? BO is much like this. This really scares me. If they all idolize him, who will provide the other side of the problem.

He's generated no significant legislation and yet he claims he can solve energy problems even though his party's obstructionism in the past on everything from oil exploration to blocking nuclear power plants is the whole reason we're in this mess.

  1. First I', not happy with either....I've always judged a person by past actions and with politicians....anything they say can't be believed. All I know about Obama are his dealings with folks that do not like America. Water seeks it's own level, You Obama supporters say what you want, he was forced to throw them under the bus. other than say the word change what has he ever done. McKain has a track record at least but what he's saying now isn't how he voted in the past. The last time we had someone speak of change was J, Carter ( I voted for him) and in my life he had the worst admin. Gas prices went up, Inflation was staggering, unemployment was high, Iran took our embassy personnel hostageand J, Carter at least was a govenor. Obama has never run anything (and don't bring up he was a organizer) , McKain at least ran a squaderon(nothing to brag about). Obama is a socialist. He wants to give everyone free health care (Which I'd Love to have) but who is going to pay for it, and don't say the rich, Carter tried that too, put a luxury tax on item that the wealthy bought. who did it hurt...the average joe, the wealthy stopped buying the stuff and guess what happened, the folks that made those products lost there jobs. I'm afraid this is what will happen with Obama if he's elected. Sooooooooooooooo I wont be voting for that empty suit.. if you think I'll vote for McCain, think again....His judgement and character is better but I understand he has a temper..which isn't good. Nixion had the same problem and look where it got him. Most of you Obama folks hate Bush ( I'm not thrilled with him either) but we have not lost another non soldier life since 9/11.

The economy was recovering from a small blip when he got there, and was trashed when he was on his way out. I am no Bush fan at all, but you people start and end history at points that are convenient for you. Yes a child can see that it is worse than it was by some measures. An adult should be able to think critically and see cause and effect. Bush is no conservative. He is a crony corporatist. (That is different from sensibly regulated capitolism.) Both are bought out by PACs and Lobbyist. They're blaming Bush out of expediency, not reality. All we need to do is look at the voting records of our elected officials. HEY! Biden voted for NAFTA and CAFTA; you'd think that instead of passing onother failed free trade agreement after watching one hurt our economy for 20 years would make these people stand up and do whats right. Democrats think everything that happens in this country is because they made it so....the moon launch (executed during the Nixon administration), Clinton's low unemployment (with a Republican congress), Michael Phelps 8 Gold Medals (no doubt the result of Nancy Pelosi), etc etc. Republicans know it is the individual and people that create innovation, weath and jobs in the country (e.g, ask Bill Gates how much politiicans were responsible for Microsoft's growth from 1992-2000.)

"No" to eight more years of no additional terrorist attacks in the US? Sure! Eight more years of placing the US in a forward strategic position in the Middle East? Fantastic! Let's keep it up! Eight more years of low taxes? That sounds great, yes! Another eight years of supporting freedom and spreading democracy around the world? Absolutely! Eight more years of defending western culture? You betcha! Eight more years of fighting the spread of Islamic fascism? Damn right!

On the other hand, two more years of Democrat control of Congress? Uh, well, that would require them to actually BE in CONTROL, but let's go with it...hah! No... no, thank you!

If Kennedy were the nominee this time around, the speech would likely go like this:

"Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, (unless it's like 500 trillion, in which case, that's too much) bear any burden (unless too many soldiers die in which case, let's bring the troops home), meet any hardship (unless it means supporting a Republican in anything, that's just too hard), support any friend (unless we don't like them, then we call them a lap-dog), oppose any foe (unless a Republican is in the White House), in order to assure the survival and the success of liberty."

  1. Here's how you can tell that its all lies. Abortion. Its simple, being pro-abortion is about being selfish. Someone who argues that babies born alive after botched abortions should be killed as intended, cannot with any degree of credibility discuss how they are all about proecting the less fortunate. Who is less fortunate and more innocent than a baby whose mother along with a "Dr." has just tried to kill her? The guy who might lose his job - No. The girl who might lose her house - No. The family without insurance - NO. Becuase getting killed for being born, is about as bad as it gets. Why does somebody defend this? They defend this becuase they want the flexibility to do it themselves if they have a "mistake." It is the mindset that places personal convenience above another's life. That person CANNOT truly place you and I and the guy who just lost his job or the girl who just lost her house or the family without insurance over themselves, becuase they value their ability to do what they want over the lives of others. Plain and simple, its all mumbo-jumbo designed to appeal to the masses who think Obama will give them free ice cream every night and they won't gain any weight.

  1. Lets complete some of Mr. Obamas comments.
“It is that promise that has always set this country apart – that through hard work and sacrifice, each of us can pursue our individual dreams". . . and then be despised and forced to share our incomes with those who avoided hard work , risk and sacrifice.

“It is why I stand here tonight. Because for two hundred and thirty two years, at each moment when that promise was in jeopardy, ordinary men and women – students and soldiers, farmers and teachers, nurses and janitors. . . sacrificed their lives and limbs in brutal and not always popular wars .

"More of you have cars you can’t afford to drive, credit card bills you can’t afford to pay and tuition that is beyond your reach" . . . because you have thought your self entitled to the "good life" and have overextended yourselves financially with
no savings to fall back on.

“I will end this war in Iraq responsibly, and finish the fight against al Qaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan". . . which will become my Vietnam quagmire draining American blood and treasure as it did the Soviet union decades ago. Though I have no definition of victory or exit strategy I will rush pell-mell into war just like Bush did only this one won't be for oil; it will be for dirt.

  1. For everyone that thinks Healthcare and Energy are Bush's fault, didn't we recognize those issues during the Clinton years?
As for Kennedy, he was a great man, and unfortunate that we will never know the true legacy of the presidency. NASA was a great success, but he didn't really get to see it through. A noble goal, but he did not really execute it, did he?

Let's not forget the Bay of Pigs incident, nor his complete disdain for Castro and Communism. Do you think he would have approved of Michael Moore's praise of Fidel's healthcare system?

And I am pretty sure that JFK was in the White House during 1961, when South Vietnam signed a military and economic aid treaty with the United States leading to the arrival (1961) of U.S. support troops and the formation (1962) of the U.S. Military Assistance Command. This is the war that Liberals hoist as the anathema of a generation and the guy Obama compared himself to today started it. hmmm.

Let us also not forget that if FDR had been a two term president, his legacy would have been TERRIBLE. The great depression and Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor whilst millions of Jews were being thrown into camps and the Nazis rolled over Europe. By the time we got into WWII, it had been going on for quite some time and we turned a deaf ear to it.

So before the revisionists get too excited about FDR and JFK, lets just keep things in perspective. I am not ignoring other presidents foibles, merely pointing out a few facts that might be overlooked in hindsight

  1. Hmmm, he didn't mention any plans for immigration reform, health care reform, social security reform, Medicare reform or tort reform. Oh yah, I forgot, the democrats created all these problems via THEIR relationships with THEIR special interest groups: the trial lawyers, the education establishment, the new deal and great society beaurocrats, the public and private sector labor unions. These groups (Social Security 21%, Medicare and Medicaid 21%, Other Mandatory 11%, Interest 9%) ,suck up about 62% of the annual budget of this country (defense uses 20% and about 18% is truly discretionary).

If something is not done about the growth of the 62% MANDETORY spending, we WILL have hyper-inflation because the government will have to print so much money so fast it will make the costs of the one-time costs of Iraq war look like peanuts. THE WAR WAS A ONE TIME EXPENSE OVER 8 YEARS. THE 50 YEAR LONG EVER GROWING ENTITLEMENTS ARE THE REAL PROBLEM! (except that drug entitlement program that helped get bush a second term….that one was okay……but I digress)

Obama has had four years in Congress to get bills passed on these issues mentioned in his speech. Voting “PRESENT” didn’t get it done!
What makes people think he will start now? The executive branch does not craft legislation the Congress does and Osama, errrrr, Obama is not going to be in Congress.

This is nothing but Obama running hard to the right on in an effort to hoodwink voters so that he can increase that 62% of MANDETORY spending to about 75% MANDETORY spending that we will have to spend FOREVER and the National Debt will begin to grow so fast that we will not be able to keep up with the interest payments.

  1. Comparing Obama to Kennedy is a joke. McCain is more like Kennedy than Obama ever will be. Military hero, tax-cutter--and how many houses did Kennedy have?

Obama's true character is demonstrated by the fact that he's rather press his "economically disadvantaged" supporters for $400+ million than to do as all previous Presidential candidates have--use the public finance system that was designed to eliminate influence of lobbyists. Obama ought to return their hard-earned money and seek support based on well-reasoned proposals and a coherent, consistent political philosophy, instead of constantly hiding his past and his deepest held confictions.

He is a relatively undistinguished soldier with only one military accomplishment -- being shot down and subsequently tortured. That is not heroism. That is just unfortunate. A hero is a man like General Powell, not Captain Mccain - a man who has always lived in the shadow of his greater and more heroic father. Like Bush in this regard, perpetually in the shadow of his father, he is forever going to be trying to convince himself of HIS greatness in relation to his father's. Don't give Captain Mccain a chance to live his dream of military adventurism. The Pentagon considers him dangerously incompetent, so why doesn't America?

    Spend, Spend, Spend.

And how do you think he'll able spend all that money? I'm not fooled by his "95%" tax cut...that's just bullshit. Democrats has a track record of raising taxes and spending their brains out. He's criticising Bush about the economy, but his proposal is, guess what, what Bush already have done -- tax cut and stimulus plan. Also about unemployment, if it's really high, then why do we have a lot of illegal immigrants here looking for work if there's no jobs for the citizens? Also the reason why companies are out sourcing jobs because Democrats like you, Obama, wants to tax them to death. Stop taxing them and they will stay here.

I'm tired of the Democrats' empty promises, Democrats said that once they gain majority in Congress, they can end the war...well what do you know, they can't do anything after all.

With a stubborn and short-sighted republican in the White House, the dems would need a veto-proof majority to get anything important done. With a slim majority in the house and, at best, a one vote majority in the senate, congress is castrated by the president and nothing but the most weak-assed, do nothing compromise legislation can get through. The slim dem majority has only served to put them on the chopping block when bills that could actually change the direction of this country are stalled by the republicans and vetoed by the president. And now we're expected to believe that under a president that has undercut the power of congress more than any in our history the barely-majority Democrats are to blame?

Can anyone explain to me why you would vote for a man who promises to perpetuate the status quo while paying nothing more than lip service to ideas that could revolutionize our economy? Why is McCain's experience worth so much when it's shown a pattern of the same neocon foreign policy as Bush, the same out-dated, "trickle down" tax policy and the total abandonment of every position that once made him more than a rank-and-file Bushite? Shouldn't the fact that he's been around for decades and still not learned anything be considered a problem?

Let's talk about judgment. Barack Obama has displayed a far better understanding of the economy and the world (John McCain may be surprised to learn that it DOES matter). He was right about Iraq, he was right about Afghanistan, he has been right about every important foreign policy issue of the last decade. John McCain has been wrong, time and time again. Give me a break.

  1. It's so funny to read peoples' comments here. People take what each candidiate says serioulsy. People, this is PR and Marketing at it's finest. They will say whatever they want to get peoples' votes. If you're expecting to choose your vote based on the speeches at the national convention then I question your vote period. Nothing they say at conventions can be taken seriously. You have to look at their track record and proposals. Let's get serious now.

Barry Hussein Obama is the most unqualified person ever running for President.
What are the democrat moonbats smoking? Kerry was horrible of course, but this guy is much worse for our country.

No experience. Grew up in a muslim country. Friends with Bill Ayers, a terrorist. Friends with racist preachers, friends with convicted felons. Doesn't salute the flag, won't wear a flag pin on his label. Yep, must be a democrat.

The great founding fathers of this country would be appalled to see this Obama light-weight in the office of the presidency.

Who will protect our children and the constitution better?
Of course, the only answer is JOHN MCCAIN.

  1. If anyone out there, Democrat *or* Republican, somehow thinks that "their Party" has all of the answers and that the world will be *such* a better place with "their Party" in power, they are truly delusional and need a serious reality check. It's gotten to the point where the two Parties will say and do whatever it takes to keep themselves in power, period, and they're both *real* good at pointing fingers and telling everyone everything that the other Party is doing wrong. I don't think that one is any much better or will do any much better than the other once in power.

All of that being said, I could care less about Party affiliations any more. I tend to look at things that I, as a person, believe in & will support those who have in the past or say they will:

Protect my 2nd Amendment Right to Keep & Bear Arms.

Do nothing to infringe on my freedom to ride my motorcycle.

    Keep taxes low.

Get away from the Country being a "Welfare State". WAY too much pork barrel spending, too many handouts, everyone thinking their entitled.

Send illegal aliens back home & strengthen both our borders & immigration control.

    Support & protect American businesses.

Limit lawsuits & associated awards - They are both slowly but surely *killing* this Country.

    Alaskan & offshore drilling NOW.

While at the same time investing in & supporting at all costs alternate energy sources & future technologies.

    Continue the exploration of space.

I'm sure someone out there will want to debate all of these issues to death; but it's kind of a moot point, because these are the kinds of issues that I make my voting decision on. And the *real* funny things is that I talk to LOTS of other people who feel the same way.... ;-)

  1. People here are claiming that the Democrtic Congress couldn't do anything because Bush would veto their bills. That doesn't explain why they couldn't even get their act together to put up bills for a up or down vote. They never had a serious vote, for example, to defund the iraqi War (btw, don't look now, but we WON--the terrorists have been routed). They are a do-nothing bunch of incompetent leftist fascists who excpect the Saudis to pump up their oil production but can't think of increasing our own, who claim that drilling won't reduce oil prices--and then turn around and insist that Bush release oil from the Strategic Reserve to reduce oil prices.
And this "change" thing that Obama keeps intoning? Carter, Mondale, Dukakis and Clinton all said the same bloody thing, and then proceeded to keep the staus quo. "Sound and fury, signifying nothing".

Obama's speech tonight, in front of a max capacity crowd of 80,000 in Denver, covered by all forms of today's most influential multi platformed media, and perhaps watched in one form or another by more than 70 million Americans...

    Your efforts are inconsequential.

Close your laptop, take a moment to really think about how bad your party has blown it in the past eight years, and use this time to start making plans to hide in the shadows, and in shame.

It is also quite interesting that none of Obama's supporters have yet to refute the facts that he received special real estate deals from a convicted felon, that he has never spoken out against crooked Illinois or Chicago politicians, that he would let rogue nations roll over us, that he is closely allied with a domestic terrorist, and on and on and on.

They must be really scared that the left-wing media will someday be forced to tell the truth about their candidate.

Through the Bush presidency and since May of 2008, Bush has vetoed only 10 times. Yet, many, many comments are from people who think Bush has vetoed everything in sight. Say what you will about Bush but he allowed Congress to function. And our economy, our governance is a result of that action and probably explains why most people give Congress a 9% approval rating.

Wasn’t GW supposed to be an experienced oil man and if anyone saw this coming, it should have been him? ...But that doesn't qualify me for the highest elected office in the United States.

Our two parties are different in means, but not in the end they strive toward. Both spend more than they take in. One steals from the productive of today, the other steals from the productive of the future. Both keep us entangled abroad in fights we have no business sticking our noses into. Both will continue sending money to the UN and marching the USA toward subjugation under a global government. Both continue to erode the promise of the constitution under which our union was founded and preserved for so many years.

The older I get, the more I learn, the more I see the same bad men taking my money away to do useless or bad things. It gets very depressing being American.

He was elected President of the Harvard Law Review. Among other important legislation, he successfully passed bills dealing with crime, nuclear proliferation, and ethics reform. He is a patriot of admirable character. Compare McCain who, in the midst of reporters and the public, snapped to his wife after being teased about his thinning hair: "At least I don't pile on the pancake makeup like a trollop, you c___" ? It is Bush who stubbornly refused to support more domestic drilling for oil even when gas prices and our foriegn dependence was at its highest? If the people of this country truly want change they should vote for the candidate who was calling for change in Washington long before it was popular. That candidate is John McCain.

The President of the US is in many ways the undeserving recipient of either praise or criticism, simply because he's in the right or wrong place at the right or wrong time in history.

Demonizing (or sensationalizing) the executive officer of the country, is simply a political tool aimed at influencing the mass majority of the American people who share the psychological need to polarize their association (or disassociation) with one party or the other. In order for people to believe in good, it's easiest to get them to identify a "bad". We saw this operative during the "war on terror", we see it in every bipartisan political race.

It's politics, stupid!!! It's like a big game of chess. And it's terribly frightening to understand that this game is how our country makes important decisions!!

Our currency has been inflated by funds in China and the Oil states in the middle east buying up dollars that we could be thrown in to uncontrollable inflation overnight if they liquidated their currency reserves. We were once the dominant economy on the planet, the envy of another nations. This is no longer the case. Please don't vote for another trigger-happy maniac from the Republican party, unless you want to be paying 50 bucks for toilet paper.

We did! We succeeded! For the past eight years we all have been privideged to be part of the worst presidency in history of the United States. For the last sixteen years we have NOT had a LEADER. I am tried of Slick Whilly and Clueless George. All I want is to have a president who will ask the American people to Step Up. The man who can do this is the man I will vote for. People we need a leader. We need a leader NOW.

Well Schwarzenegger is a Republican and he, uh, I guess couldn't do much with the Dem Led Legislature up there in Sacramento, but if you take a look at that state, it is a perfect representation of what our Democratic ideals can accomplish. We took that state and, well, let's see, oh, I hear Michael McDonald singiing America The Beautiful and he's uh, he's trying to channel um, Ray Charles...RAY CHARLES yeah that's it Ray Charles, Hallelujah Praise Obama for what he says he can do!

  1. Here some facts for you to think about!!
George Bush has been in office fo 7 1/2 years. The first six the economy was
fine. A little over one year ago:
    1) Consumer confidence stood at a 2 1/2 year high;
    2) Regular gasoline sold for $2.19 a gallon;
    3) the unemployment rate was 4.5%.
    4) the DOW JONES hit a record high--14,000 +
    5) American's were buying new cars, taking cruises, vacations overseas,
    living large!...

But American's wanted 'CHANGE'! So, in 2006 they voted in a Democratic Congress & yep--we got 'CHANGE' all right. In the PAST YEAR:

    1) Consumer confidence has plummeted.
    2) Gasoline is now near $4 a gallon
    3) Unemployment is up to 5% (a 10% increase);
    4) Americans have seen their home equity drop by $12 TRILLION DOLLARS &
    prices still dropping;
    5) 1% of American homes are in foreclosure.
$2.5 TRILLION DOLLARS HAS EVAPORATED FROM STOCKS, BONDS
    & MUTUAL FUNDS INVESTMENT PORTFOLIOS!
    6) Hitler gave good speeches also

I see so many people on here complaining that he doesnt have the track record to be president, but i think thats exactly what we need. Fresh ideas and a new outlook ont he 21st century. Granted he alone cannot make these promises come true but as a nation we can rise to the occasion and make this a great country once more. I think he is grounded and understands what is wrong with this nation and is prepared to do all in his power to see this nation succeed. I hate what this country has become under George Bush and we have the opportunity in this election to see change enacted under his new leadership. I think all you nay sayers are the ones who have no idea what long term turmoil is and if we elect McCain in the upcoming election then we will be worse off in another four years and beyond. It's a no-brainer that the smallest household budget couldn't even operate that way. Someone hasn't done his homework.

I'm amazed by anyone who thinks that we can somehow solve any world problem without the help of other nations. That has never happened in our history.

  1. It's kinda funny that Republicans talk about how government doesn't work and that Big Brother doesn't know best, then proceed to try to bring down Obama because he doesn't have experience in DC. Wow. I felt better about our country for a minute, then came to this message board and quickly came back to the reality of cynicism, selfishness, and lack of faith in their government "by the people, for the people". If you don't believe in your government, get out! While it is far from perfect, continuing to propagate this belief that government cannot be effective becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy relived every time a crooked Republican hits office.
For those who honestly believe the Bush administration has led this country efficiently you don't know history. Reaganomics led to recession under Bush 41, should you be surprised we're in a recession at the end of Bush 43 term? Trickle down economics is a ploy to ensure a permanent bourgousie class for which 90% must be subservient to.
The borrow and send economics of Bush 43 ruined our country financially, a war fought against the wrong people is helping Iraq's budget run a $79 billion surplus, oh yeah, the oil is paying for the war all right.
And personal responsibility, right, Ken Lay had personal responsibility. All of the CEOs taking multimillion dollar bonuses at the expense of their work force and their shareholders exhibit personal responsibility.
Lest you free market morons realize, Adam Smith's fundamental assumption is that man is greedy. Yet all of you Reps. thump your Bibles which is predicated on caring for your fellow man. I just don't get it. i don't understand your logic. What scares me more is the fact it is evident you have no logic.
I am an independent. I consider myself more of a social conservative, but how on Gods green earth could you possibly imply 8 years of Bush and his record spending and record debt qualifies as fiscally conservative?
You know, George Washington had limited legislative experience. JFK had limited experience. Bushie had limited experience. At least if you're going to spoon-feed Republican talking points try to understand the history of your nation just a bit clearer.
While I do not agree with everything Obama has proposed, at least he's genuine, intelligent, and has a vision. You wanna know why this country should fear the middle east? Oil. We know many islmaic states, including Iran and possibly Saudi Arabia, take our dollars from oil and feed it to terrorist groups. Oh yeah, liberals brought down the towers? Puhleeze. Those too stupid to realize that eventually after sucking the straw for so long it runs dry. You're right, off-shore drill so that we see a couple of cents off gas prices 5 years from now. Wow. As I said, the stupidity of this message board takes the cake.. ...

  1. It is true that the proposals that Obama made tonight are ambitious, and it is almost certainly true that some of them will, for one reason or another, not be implemented. The promises made by those running for President are almost always far greater than what can actually be realized, given the nature of our lawmaking processes.

But I would rather have as President a man who understands the difficulties facing Americans and is determined to set the bar high in an attempt to address them than a man who not only fails to understand the problems facing Americans who don't own multiple homes, but who has done nothing to explain how he will deviate from the destructive policies implemented over the past eight years.

I don't expect perfection from Barack Obama should he be elected. But I can imagine few things with greater potential to further damage America than the election of John McCain.

  1. I love the speech, usual liberalism at it's best.
I would use the same strategy that the Democrats have used since the day the party was born since it works like this:
Tell everybody that their life sucks, the economy is is terrible (which no more than a year ago it was not terrible, besides that the conomy goes up and down no matter what anyway), the country is in dire straights and is going down the tubes (yet call it the world power and leader in everything). Then tell everybody to blame the current president for their so called miserable lives, then tell everybody that they need "Change". Give them the idea that you as the nominee can help "Change" their current situation by listing the laundry list of their "problems" but don't give them specific details on how you plan to change it. Just say it needs to be changed and you can promise the following:
95% tax cut for middle class workers
provide more education for early childhood
provide healthcare to all Americans even if they can't afford it on their own
bolster social security for the future
    bring more jobs to america
    cut foreign oil dependency

You do that every time and you can be the Democratic nominee.
Let me ask you, how do you do all this and get the money to do it, you have to get it from somewhere. Let's take one example I have heard from him (which was not given from Obama's speech tonight because his speech gave no examples whatsoever as to idea's, how to's, strategies, etc. but I digress).

Tax oil company profits because they make so much money - ok, let's do that, tax the profits even higher than the current tax rate the oil company pays in profits. Who are you taxing in this case, the oil company owners, correct? Everybody following me so far, good. So if you are taxing the profits at a higher rate you are taking money away from the person who owns that company, right. Well, guess what America, you actually own that company whether or not you want to believe it, how you ask, do you have a 401(k) plan or something to invest in from your employer, or your own personal account where you invest money in mutual funds (99.9% of all employer sponsored retirement plans invest in mutual funds). Well, if you do, then you own mutual funds that contain oil companies as one of the holdings in the fund. Therefore, taxing oil company profits decreases the profit of the stock, which decreases the return of the stock, which in turn decreases the return in your account. So who loses money, you do, simply for owning those shares. What does he want to use this money for, all those above things. Thus, tax the working class and give it back to everybody, working or not. That is called Socialism, everybody gets the same piece of pie, no matter how much or how little you worked to earn the piece.
Thanks but no thanks, I'll stick to taking care of that myself and not allowing the government to do it for me because quite frankly, I don't trust the government (democratic or republican) with spending my money, I'll do that myself.

Wake up America - Barack has not given a specific yet, when he does, let me know.

The rich? Doesn't anyone understand that the "so called rich" help the poor and unemployed by making jobs and stimulating the economy with their businesses!!!"

Guess what? That's wrong. consumer spending drives the economy, not corporations or the wealthy. Without increased demand, there are no profits and if there aren't any profits, there are no new jobs. I always love how some people believe the wealthy drive economic growth and create new jobs...THEY DO NOT!

You can question me if you like, but I work as an economist for a large corporation. So don't bother.

  1. the reason oil prices went up after Katrina is because oil processing plants were put out of commission not because off shore drilling was interrupted ! we dont have enough oil off shore to make any significance to our oil needs - besides it would be at least five to ten years before any oil would be realized from off shore drilling and even then oil companies do not sell oil below international set commodity prices for oil , it might come down a few cents because there is a little more oil around ,gasoline or home heating oil will not significantly drop because of off shore drilling - the fact is that the potential permanent catastrophe to fishing , recreation etc of our coasts by oil drilling hardly is justified for a very TEMPORARY few cents savings many years from now - Obama is right - get us off of oil all together

  1. BO is a socialist, maybe a pure communist. If thats truly want you liberals want, you may indeed get it. but as the saying goes: 'be careful what you wish for'.

I've never liked Bush, and I really don't like BO, but then again, isn't it hard to like any politicians these days? Both parties are interested in one and only one thing: keeping themselves in power. The idea that either party is interested in your well-being is a complete farce. Only you have your best interests in mind, and only you can make the most of your life. The only party that truly understands that is the libertarian party. Unfortunately, they are barely a blip on the radar of most, and the 2 main parties want to keep it that way.

As bad as Bush has been, I truly fear for this country if the dems get complete control (presidency/congress)...if you work for a living, get ready to see alot less of your money; if you live off the govt for a living, you'll be overjoyed! but Atlas will eventually shrug....

Agree or disagree, McCain knows the issues inside and out and will skewer him in the debates. Barrack will try to minimize them at all costs and will never accept the town meetings that McCain has requested. He won't even do an interview with anyone on the "evil" Fox News. How is he going to face Putin and Ahmadinejad? Some leader!

  1. The whole Dem. convention made me sick. I am an independant voter and bending towards Rep, . The whole entertainment slapstick jokers were there to sway voters but over estamate their importance. No one takes any of them serious. Obama talkes about taxing the top ten percent of wage earners but it's their money that got him where he is today. Tthe majority of Obama's voter didn't give him a dime. I've said from day one, that the Dem. should be ashament of themselves for picking this guy. Was this the best they could come up with? As far as Opera getting "choked up" by Obama speach, has anyone watched one of her shows on her "favorite things"? She spends $400.00 on sheets, expensive soaps, ets. Most people watching Opera could't afford her "favorite things. What a joke. Obama wants Gov. to help with Early Childhood Ed, kids wanting to go to college, more money for the poor, better health care for people that can't affor it. Be real, The middle income (if there is one) are the ones that will bear these expense. The top 10% wage earners are paying a rate equal to approx. 70% of the taxes, as is. Immigrants coming to this country today work hard and come here expecting to work hard, they don't expect the Gov to take care of them, sometimes they have to work two jobs. Obama is playing to an audience that want more freebees and feel a sence of entitlement. from the Gov. These are the people that are waving the American flag- I say work two jobs like I do and get your kids an education.

  1. "Hey, B.O., if offshore drilling HAS NO EFFECT ON OIL PRICES, then why does a hurricane simply passing through the gulf for a few days cause the proce of oil to go up."

The first has to do with practicality, the second has to do with speculation and panic. I thought conservatives were the economic realists...

"He also should have an estimate for us about when we can expect Islamists to successfully poison NYC's water supply or fly airliners into another series of buildings as his attentions are focused elsewhere."

I agree, it would have been nice to know that, nine months into his first term, despite all of the warnings and credible intelligence, George Bush would have allowed two hijacked airliners to destroy the WTC, one to severely damage the Pentagon, and one to aim for thw White House itself (but for the courage and actions of some actual heroes).

"Are we to believe this Socialist "

This says a lot more about you than it does about him.

It's just so surreal to have somebody who is so close to becoming President stand there and express all of the same feelings and frustrations that you've shared in the last 8 years. Electing Obama as President is one opportunity that America can't afford to lose.

  1. Nothing can ever get done in this country with a Coke and Pepsi regime of Republicans/Democrats "fighting" over what should be done, when the real issues always elude us. The middle class is being squeezed, small businesses are in trouble while big businesses get tax breaks; globalization is killing our economy and straining our natural resources, as well as selling out any semblance of culture both here and in Europe to illegal immigration...pretty sad.

A true, strong president and Congress would get us out of the middle east, stop giving money to Israel, stop taking money from ALL lobbies, take care of illegal immigration with the newly displaced troops, subsidize renewable sources of energy (it can be done, no one has any incentive at the moment - why is this taking so long? Because the US auto manufacturers are just starting to figure out that they can't rely on gas guzzling truck & SUV sales forever), etc. Unfortunately, the system is designed so that the least common denominator always rules. No politician with the current system of government will EVER get anything great accomplished. Try and think of the last time you were really proud of a President's accomplishments. If you're not 80 years old you probably can't do it, and if you can, you're kidding yourself.

Government won't solve our problems, but they may be shift some resources to help us lowly commoners out...My company just switched to a high deductible health plan, so in essence I no longer have insurance. Its painful, the premiums are higher than they were on our better plan, and it basically feels like I got a 15% pay cut. If that is the direction health care is going, then yes, I will buy into a government sponsored plan. This is not socialized medicine...It is similar to the system in place in Switzerland (hardly a bastion of liberalism in my book) and the Swiss have adopted it readily.

  1. The reason so many people are bashing his speech....

It made sense and the people doing the bashing are republicans. They are scared. They know McCain is feeble. He is a "bush baby".

One poster stated,..."it scares me that people will vote for Obama and they have no idea what he stands for..."

What scares me is that people knew what Bush was all about and they voted for this idiot anyway. If McCain wants to continue Bush's lame policies then where does that lead us?

Only people with blinders on would even think of voting a republican into office.

    * Points:

    1. McCain and his cronies think we are whiners.

    2. McCain does no think that speaking with Iran is a good idea. Even that idiot Bush has taken Obama's side on that one and sent his people to speak with Iran.

    3. McCain wants to stay in Iraq. Iraq wants us gone and has 80 billion in surplus while we are going down the tubes.

Reality check...WE MUST CHANGE THE WAY THE US DOES BUSINESS and McCain will not be the one to do this folks.

The US gave Bush a chance and look what happened. Folks, its time to change the guard.

By the way, Clinton helped this country to prosper. Bush was the recipient if the momentum that the Democrats built and the republicans killed it!!

It's amazing to me that after eight years of an embarrassing administration and an ignorant fool for a president - it comes down to these two candidates. Once again - I feel that I am not represented in an election. I will wait to see the debates and decide based on performance, facts, and intuition - not media hype, advertising, pundits or polls. Neither candidate is perfect but I have hope that the next president will make himself clear to the public.

  1. Senator Obama is a socialist.

His mindset is that government is the solution to most problems because you and I need to be led. That we are not being led has allowed us to make our own decisions over the past eight years which has resulted in our buying houses and cars we could not afford and over-using credit cards that are pushing us into bankruptcy.

I believe the senator feels that we will all be happier (if not necessarily better off) when more aspects of our lives are determined not by our own poor choices, but for us by caring giving government bureaurats seated behind desks in Washington.

Perhaps then we can add another "S" to USA.

Mitt shifted the tax burden to local government so he could say he did not raise taxes. However, taxes went thru the roof with him in office. (WHEN HE WAS AROUND)

  1. Most of the comments I see here are products of the cynicism Senator Obama talks about in this very speech. A lot of talk about no track record or experience. Let's talk history. Abraham Lincoln, the great icon of the republican party, had a few years in the Illinois State Senate, and few years in the House. FDR had a few years in legislator, and only three years as Govenor of New York. JFK had less experience than his canidate as well. So if you can only put stock by a canidate who has spent an entire career in Washington, you are fooling yourself. Some of our greatest leaders were Washington outsiders.

In terms of the speech, I thought it was great. He laid out a clear vision and admonished the right. He seemed powerful and inspirational. He's ready.

  1. Ok, Folks, listen up.

My guess is that most of you out there spewing hate and venom haven't taken the time to truly assess the candidates, look at past elections, and make intelligent decisions. So get your heads out of the sand, drop the rhetoric and take some time to study the candidates and make an intelligent decision.

The very efficacy of our country is at stake here. Never in our history have we been so vilified and hated. We need change and we need hope. And that's what Obama's speech gave me last night - for the first time in 8 years. I'm tired of a climate of fear - which is exactly what the Republicans have given us.

Sure Obama could use more experience, but so could Abraham Lincoln and other past presidents who did outstanding jobs.

And, this election is not about what happened during the Clinton administration. It's about what has happened during the Bush administration.

Stop falling back on the rhetoric of hate and use your heads for once. What you are spewing does not speak highly of your character and cheapens and degrades our great democratic process.

So step outside your comfort zones - don't be afraid of change! It's good for you!!

However, I still don't understand how he is going to invest billions in alternative energy, re-build infrastructure, keep Social Security viable, introduce universal health care, help the auto industry re-tool, prevent jobs from going overseas, reduce taxes for 95% of americans, make college more affordable, and pay for all this by raising taxes on 5% of Americans and closing some tax loop holes. While he talks about going over the budget and eliminating waste, he will not committ to ending earmarks which cost taxpayers billions and billions of dollars. Too much rhetoric to little substance. As a teacher my favorite part of the speech was his statement that teachers will get more money. Can I expect a monthly check from Washington, or will it just be added to my regular pay? I am an indep. who usually votes Democrate, this election I'm leaning toward McCain.

  1. Did all the Republicans come out to play today? Does everyone here really think the current status quo is good for America? Are the people here today who are deriding Obama the same 23% of Americans who actually still support Bush's policies, both foreign and domestic? Or has Bush so defeated our spirit that anything that even has the faintest smell of change has become just too much to comprehend?

We stood at a crossroads in September 2001, and Bush made all the wrong choices then. We stand at another crossroads today. Is drilling offshore going to solve our energy needs? The answer is no. If we don't start, today, to create change, there isn't going to be a tomorrow for a "world power" America. There will be a tomorrow for a "third world nation" America and if that sounds positively un-American than you haven't visited one of our cities recently, not to mention New Orleans.

Does Obama have all the answers? No. But he does have vision and he does have hope and he at least comprehends the need for change. Giving tax breaks to the wealthy and to corporations does not benefit the middle class. It only serves to make us bottom feeders - living of the crumbs that are left by the wealthiest few. If we are to become a great Nation once again, it will be through the likes of Barack Obama.

  1. Facts.
    Barack Hussein Obama.
He spent his childhood in most populous Muslim country in world.
Attended an Islamic school in Indonesia during his formative years; unclear whether it was a Madrassa. Had a muslim father. Had a muslim step-father. Has muslim siblings.

We are now fighting World War 4 (WW 3 was the cold war which Reagan won).

Its radical Islam vs. Western Civilization, with radical Islam's goal of enslaving the world with 24-7 Islam, Islam-everywhere, overthowing the US constitution and replacing it with Sharia law. Islam means "submission".

Who would be better protecting the West (freedom) from radical Islam?

    McCain of course.
The democrat party is already the peace party (peace at all cost), the Neville Chamberlin party, the anti-Miltary party.

It is a reasonable question to ask. With Obama already being a knee-jerk pacifist, would he also be sympathic and soft fighting the radical Islamic jihad and its excalating assault on western civilization? Like Clinton and Kerry, go to Manhattan district court and file a motion with the court as their toughest response to the bad guys?
