Obama's donors responding, campaign says

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor August 1, 2008 07:03 PM

In a video message to donors this evening, Barack Obama's campaign manager said they are responding in an inspiring way to John McCain "taking his campaign into the gutter."

David Plouffe said 200,000 people have given Obama money in the last week -- including 100,000 just on Thursday, with one- third of them new contributors.

McCain's string of attacks have shown that he does not want to talk about the issues, Plouffe said.

While McCain wants to make the campaign about Britney Spears and Paris Hilton, "you want to make it about our future," Plouffe told donors in the message.

"I think John McCain has harmed himself in the last week," Plouffe added.

I couldn't agree more with Mr. Plouffe. I am an independent voter and I was shocked to see how low the McCain camp has sunk. The McCain we have been seeing in this campaign is a far cry from the one who years ago garnered some respect from voters of all stripes. I think he is desperate -- he just doesn't compare well to someone with the character, intelligence, and credentials of Barack Obama.

  1. Your article is totally correct. I gave once to Obama, and now I am giving again. I don't give a lot, only $50 at a time, its all I can afford. But every time I hear one of McCain's ugly, twisted ads, I scrape up some more money and give it to Obama. I ask my friends to do the same, and they are. The final straw that moved me to go beyond my own giving and ask others to contribute was the ad that showed Obama with two white women. It was so obviously designed to push racist hot buttons it made me sick. John McCain, I used to think you were an honorable man, now you are willing to prostitute yourself and your values to become president. Oddly enough, I don't want a prostitute for president.

  1. And Obama sort of shot himself in the foot with that "They don't like me 'cause I don't look like all those other presidents on dollar bills" comment. He should have known better. So it cancels out?

  1. Obama has to answer every single attack by laying out specifics on his plans for the economy. Leave others to respond to attacks in a gentlemanly way. Impress upon all voters that if they really want a repeat of the last 8 years then they should really vote for McCain. McCain and his campaign is belittling, disrespectful, and contemptuous of Senator Obama. Someone has to remind voters that Obama's rise was no fluke. The world will show disdain for America under the another Mcbush reign. We must never allow America to stumble ever again.

  1. You know... McCain may not be running the best campaign in history. Actually he may be running the worst. But that fact of the matter is that come election day as bad of a candidate as McCain is, the majority of americans will come to the polls for him. The american people know that we cannot let our country be handed over to this Liberal socialist, fascist, racist radical who hates our country. If you want the government to take over your life, and tell you what to do,and take care of you, like a child, then you go ahead and be a silly liberal socialist. As for me, I love america!

  1. I also have contributed to Obama's campaign and I am sending another check this week. I find Mr. McCain's Tactics appaling, transparent and utterly disgustiing.
How can a leader lower himself to such standards as such?
Thats ok.... His true character is beginning to show.

  1. I'm a registered Republican and I have supported McCain in the past. But these churlish antics of the past week are insulting to my intelligence. I just donated $100 to Obama. I have never given money to a Democratic candidate before; and I may never given money to a Republican again. I guess the Republican party wishes to commit suicide.

He maybe a war hero but that is not what he is today. we should judge people as they are today not what they used to be. Today Mccain is a dishonorable man.

Do you know that the opposite of liberal is the satanic slave-driving anti-social plundering thugs, the cohorts Enron thieves, who wants a government to attack other nations for oil under false pretext, bomb innocent civilians and put our troops in harm's way , and curtail personal freedom in the name of homeland security?

  1. I really wish that the people that are calling Obama names would just sit down and listen to one speech - no more - just one. I was shocked in 2000 when Bush got as many votes as he got. Those same people are going to vote for McCain. I am really, really afraid for my country. I am 60 years old and have watched the U.S. Constitution be shredded during the past eight years - seen all my privacy rights taken away, and now I just know that there are many, many people that will vote against Obama and, believe me, whether they admit it or not, most of this is about race. How else can you explain an articulate, successful man with intelligence and patriotism lose out to the likes of John McCain. If Obama doesn't win this election, I am moving out of this country.

Dem4Hilz - Well, the War on Terror has been about as successful as Reagan's War on Drugs thus far. We've managed to waste a third world country not related to any terror plot against the US and we've blown a half-trillion to do it! Another 4 years of exactly the same thing is probably all we need to win it, right?

Oh, and I would gladly endure someone having an abortion I don't agree with and paying slightly higher taxes if it means getting back tangible personal freedoms we've lost in the last 8 years.

Obama just got another $50 from family. Keep up the good work guys, you're the best fundraising tools he has!

Democrat for Hilary. Why is it that you are so against Obama? The biggest problem with the Hilary-Obama race was that their voting records are almost identical.

Hum...whats that big difference between Obama and Hilary again? Oh yeah, I think it has to do with their skin. People need to understand how much race is playing a role in this election. Just because the political pundits are too afraid to admit it, you can't deny the voters that sit at home slamming Obama because of his race behind closed doors.

People need to let go of their hate and respect that its time to take the country in a new direction. All the neocons complain about how Obamas liberal ideas about our economy will be the death of America. Look where 8 years of Bush/McCain economic strategy got us.

I believe Harold Ford Jr. would be the Senator from Tennessee today if not for the portrayal of the white blond in the (ad). The McCain campaign is attempting the same subtlety and thinks or hopes it will not be recognized.

I kind of doubt this troll was a Hillary supporter, don't you?
But this person illustrates a point that should be considered.

McCain's ads and the jingoistic, childish strategy that Steve Schmidt and Karl Rove are putting into place now are not aimed at blog readers. These ads are aimed at the broad middle of the Republican base: the WalMart shopper. It's how Bush won--twice.

They may work after all. Be scared. It will be a long, ugly three months. We ain't seen nothin' yet.

  1. Why don't you media comment on the lie McCain's previous advertisement made, by stating that Obama did not visit the injured troops because cameras were not allowed. It has been verified that he did indeed visit the injured troops without publicizing it. We all know that McCain's camp was following Obama's every move, and has loyalist informants in the military in Iraq. McCain's camp absolutely knew Obama had visited the injured troops, but lied about it.

A lie like that should merit headlines on the front pages of all newspapers. Media, when are you going to cover McCains outrageous comments and hold him accountable ?

  1. I received this video in my e-mail this morning (I was one of those zero-hour Thursday contributors inspired by McCain's ham-handed and asinine attack ad) but didn't stop to watch it. A hundred thousand contributors on Thursday -- that's great. If the average donation was even $25, that's $2.5mil drawn up in a single day. Hopefully this will come as a lesson to McCain that insultingly stupid attack ads are more profitable for Obama than him.

  1. John McCain has lost his honor and it is sad to see. I feel bad for the gullible misguided and fear mongering Americans who attack a genuine American success story like Barack Obama. You don't love America any more than anyone else. You just think you do so you can justify spreading hate. Ignorance is one of the reasons this country is moving backwards on so many fronts. The Republican who is leaving office has grown the size of our government to record levels and doubled our deficit. He did not veto a single spending bill in his entire first term. He will very soon have spent a trillion dollars on an experiment in Iraq that may or may not succeed. We hope it does but time will tell. The idea however that you can attack someone preemptively on flimsy evidence however is un-American. I am a moderate Independent and have consistently given to Obama because he is what America needs at this point in our history. I just made my largest contribution by far yesterday because McCain is being childish and unfortunately this type of lunacy actually works sometimes in American politics. Obama is an extremely intelligent man who has made himself and not relied on his pedigree a la Bush and McCain. He will actually listen to all of the best and brightest from both sides of the aisle and make informed decisions based upon the information and evidence he gathers. I am willing to bet that he will actually be more centrist than Clinton ever was and actually have a lot of successes. In the meantime can we please get back to the important issues we all face in this country.

  1. If the presidency can be bought, Obama's supporters - including those in other countries - will buy it!

A Democrat for 35 years, I'm appalled that Obama - who has the "audacity" to call himself a DEMOCRAT! - would abandon the level playing field provided by election finance reform.

It's just more evidence that he's a short-sighted idiot who is either too stupid to see or too selfish to care about the impact his actions will have on average American citizens in the future.

I understand he's afraid that he can't win if the economic playing field is equal, but if this "cash is king" philosophy is representative of the values of the "new" Democratic Party, the working people of this country are now without any representation whatsoever.

  1. McCain has demonstrated his lack of innovation, lack of independence, and blind alliance to a Republican Party that I pray to God will be run out of town in disgrace this November. Hillary Clinton disgusted me in the primaries and now McCain is topping the Clintons. It is sad to see a man who has served our country and made the sacrifices that John McCain has, resort to the very same Carl Rove tactics that George Bush used to stab him in the back. John McCain dishonors himself. I just hope most Americans will finally see that any politician who talks this kind of dirt about a fellow American who is running for President, is not worthy of leading our nation. It's called B.S. and voters should know it when they see it by now.

  1. McCain has been making a lot of factual errors, bring them up. I suspect he's not just having slips of the tongue, I don't think he knows his stuff. For example,

McCain said al Qaeda was getting support from Iran, this is false (as McCain admitted).

McCain said US troop levels were back to pre-surge levels, wrong by over 10,000

McCain talked about the Iraq/Pakistan border, which doesn't exist.

McCain talked about Czechoslovakia in the present tens, Czechoslovakia hasn't existed for about 15 years

  1. I've supported Obama, but decisions like the FISA vote had made me somewhat less enthusiastic. But, now that McCain has hired Rove's acolytes and made it clear that he intends to run the same kind of filthy presidential campaign that Republicans have always run, I have been reenergized. I have sent my first $100, and intend to send more. I will be ringing doorbells on election day. And I will find additional ways to help. Every four years, the Republican party paints a picture of its opponent that is nothing short of an outrageous lie. They do so because they cannot defend what they stand for, or the way they have run the country. They may get away with it again, but I will do everything I can to prevent it. Thank you, Senator McCain, for clarifying what is at stake. I should never have forgotten, even for a moment.

  1. Unfortunately McCain may have hit on something. People are so tired of the current seriousness in their own situations right now that some humor in the campaign is welcomed even if negative. McCain may have just hit upon Obama's weak spot,he's too serious. Even though the nations problems are daunting people don't always want to hear about them in a campaign. They sometimes want to be distracted. Much like in the thirties during the great depression. For Obama to overcome McCains sucessful poking of his soft spots he should retort with self effacing humor to win the day.

Now all of that stuff somehow bothers you? Ok then. What was Hillary when she was running? Pro life? Pro Iraq war? Did she have a fundamentally different tax plan than Obama?

But this year is different. I truly don't think McCain would be as bad as George W. -- he would be worse! Like George W., McCain isn't very bright, but he is more vicious and mean than George W. On the other hand Obama is bright, likeable and willing to listen to others. Pre-experience does not a successful President make -- the ability to listen and analyze situations and surround yourself with others of intelligence and honesty with good intent is the key to success for a president. It has been shown over and over again in the short history of our country. I'm for Obama... and have already contributed twice.

I am likewise tired of hearing Mr. McCain's constant reminder that he is a war hero. True heroes wear their heroism quietly. Mr McCain is a truly angry man who wants the White House so bad he will do anything and everything to achieve that end. A disgusting excuse for a Senator.

  1. I am an Obama supporter and I agree that John has nothing to say that is positiive so he has come out with the worst sort of racist nonsense that he can. Those of us who are Black understand the racism behind showing Obama with white women. This is the same thing that was used to defeat Harold Ford in Tennessee. However, I hope that white American won't fall for the okedoke.

  1. I have never donated to a political campaign before, and I have been open to listening to the messages from both presidential candidates, but after the latest series of John McCain ads, I'm writing a check to the Obama campaign.

The American people deserve a better presidential selection process than the one we are seeing now - we shouldn't have to endure gutter tactics when there are many legitimate issues to be debated.

  1. The best defense against the Schmidt/ Rove/ McCain offensive. Focus on the people behind the negative strategy, the new McCain campaign. Use their strength (the negative campaign) against them, repeatedly.

    1. The takeover is now complete. The McCain campaign is now run by the Schmidt/ Rove/ Cheney/ Neocon/ Haliburton/ Swiftboat/ Smear apparatus. The same team that gave us Bush, the same dirty politics, the same distractions, the same disaster awaiting the country and economy, is now in controlling the McCain campaign.

    2. They know how to win Presidential campaigns. And when let loose in the Whitehouse in just 8 short years – they will also run the economy into the ground, lose 50,000 jobs per month to China and India, send billions a month in US wealth to middle east oil despots who stoke terrorism, lose prime US assets to our enemies, lead us into record national debt, the subprime crisis, Enron and more.

    3. They must think we are stupid. Will we vote against Rove, Cheney and the neocons and show them that you can’t fool all the people all the time. Will we tell McCain it is sad that he is embracing the same dirty politics and desperate Bush strategist that smeared McCain, his family and his adopted Bangladeshi daughter Bridget in 2000.
