Pawlenty piles on
Governor Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota, taking his turn in Denver today to bash Democratic nominee Barack Obama, hammered home the Republican message that the staging of Obama's acceptance speech reveals his arrogance and vanity.
The backdrop for the stage at Invesco Field features faux-Greek columns made of plywood. Republicans are dubbing it the "Temple of Obama," and Pawlenty, believed to be among the finalists for Republican John McCain's running mate, piled on.
"It looks like they are getting ready for the emperor to arrive," Pawlenty said on Fox News Network. "The facade is metaphor for production purposes, but there’s not much behind it. It’s the perfect metaphor for Barack Obama’s readiness to be president of the United States."
On ABC, Pawlenty said, "This Roman-like facade, a facade with Roman columns, is a perfect metaphor or icon for the point that it's an interesting production, but behind it there's not much there."
He added, "My goodness, it's amazing that we're three days into the Democratic convention and 60 or so days from the actual election and they're still trying to plead with the American people and convince us that Barack Obama is ready to be president. The fact of the matter, he is not."
The New York Post lampooned the backdrop with a cover today that blared, "'O' My God."

If Pawenty wasn't such a moron, he'd realize that it's almost exactly the same backdrop that they used at the GOP convention in 2004, which he attended.
Has this windbag noticed that pretty much EVERY building in the nation's capital is in Roman style? Is he aware of the event that occured 45 years ago today in front of the Lincoln Memorial? Hmm, wonder what the Lincoln Memorial looks like. If his speech is as 'hopeful' as usual, they are going to look like a pack of jerks if their only response is vanity.
If Obama is not ready to be President, then McCain is less than ready. I hope we've learned from the recent past ttwo elections what can happen when we make the wrong choice. If not, we can look forward to the same chaos that we are now experiencing. Trillions of dollars overseas, not ecnough money here at home for basics, war and more war for reasons most of us aren't sure about, and trampling of our freedom and rignts as citizens. We must take this election seriously.
Was it not the same arrogance and vanity that he showed when he desire to make a speech at the site of the Berlin wall? This guy just likes to impress and nothing else. He is a celebrity personified as a politician!!
I guess Pawlenty only thinks a guy with an iq over 50 is an elitist.
How can the republicans run with it's central theme being that the democratic candidate is too intelligent to lead the country?
obama will never be ready just like the rest of his party he is a natural born follower
I lived in Minnesota for over 20 years and I don't think you realize all the things Gov. Pawlenty has accomplished. For example: Ummm...................................never mind.
If as a Governor Pawlenty cannot recognize that arrogance and vanity is invading a country that did our country no harm and then want to leave on our own terms, he is displaying assine qualities that makes him unfit to serve as governor much more vice president of these United States. He is affirming the same old deceptive practices the republicans are capable of in seeking to win by deception and manipulation, preying on the weak and onstable
Uh yea... but he is kind of a moron. Take it from a native Minnesotan. He is a two term governor who has never won 50% of the vote and is disliked by most of of the state, especially after the whole No New Taxes and the subsequent 35W bridge falling into the river, which has been proven due to lack of maintenance.
On the up side though, the national media attention has finally forced him to get rid of his mullet.
there won't be a single speaker at the republican convention that can match the performances of michelle obama, hillary clinton, john kerry, bill clinton or joe biden. and so.....they make fun of the staging?
Is this the platform the GOP is going to run? Bash Obama and everything will be alright? The GOP calls Obama a celebrity because he's so well liked. It's called being popular. Bush wouldn't know anything about that. McClone wouldn't dare to actually invite real Americans to an outside venue. No one would show up. The more the GOP cries about the Democrats the more worried they sound. I'm waiting to hear McClone call Obama "Moonbeam" next. Embarrassing. If the GOP wants to win this election, they can start by fixing all of the problems they have created. Good luck!! It's going to take a Democrat to fix this mess not 4 more years of the same thing.
Jeez, it's just a backdrop. Pay attention to what the man is saying, not his surroundings. Eight years of Republican leadership has really hurt this country, and they're telling people not to vote for someone because of a stage set? Weak.
Lefties always are so quick with the silly name calling. Maturity is not their strong suit.
Pawlenty: whiner.
I live in MN and I hope McCain Picks him because he is a Moronic Robot.
He is perfect fit for the “the celebration of ignorance” or RNC, it’s the same thing.
Obama is ready to lead. He is ready to lead us down a socialist road, together with his congressional helpers, that will set our country back years. Fortunately, one bad man, or one bad administration, can't ruin our country. Our form of government will withstand even an Obamination. But it will be a dark period for America if he is elected.
What a pity Republic Party.
Always the same old dress.
Look at us closely, how exciting
"The Emperor's New Clothes"!
The GOP doesn't let facts get in the way of their snotty, childish attacks.
Thats the strongest argument he could muster? Really? Obama has nothing behind his production? What should he have behind him? Actual concrete pillars? Your metaphor is equally hollow. As a decision-maker and a leader, he's made correct foreign policy decision regarding the iraq war and our economy, the iraq timetable, for instance, and he actually knows a thing or two about the economy, unlike his opponent who has openly admitted to knowing very little about or struggling state of financial affairs. Dont let these fools fool you. Dont forget Katrina, Alberto Gonzalez, Valeri Plane, Karl Rove, Guantanamo Bay, the Patriot Act, and the list seems to go on and on and on...
Well, Mr Pawlenty, THis is all you could come up with? And you want to be the next VP of the USA???? What a joke!!!! Senator Obama is much better looking, charming and far more intelligent than you. Your childish comments above proves that you have a peanut size brain.
Operation Unity
For all of you who are working hard to promote Messiah Rush Limbaugh Operation Chaos
A new cancer is growing within the Republican Party. A type of cancer that is trying to spread thought-out the United States of America. The cells are easy to detect. Look closely and you will see desperation among the strongest cancerous cells within the Republican Party. They are fighting hard to retain the structure that keeps them alive – lost morals, values and ethics that once represented the Republican Party. The cancer promoted by special interest lobbyist has infiltrated the corridors of the Whitehouse, Congress, State Government, and slowly weakened the foundation of our great justice system to promote the interest of oil companies, big corporations, Insurance and pharmaceutical companies, transportation and agricultural entities and endless others to promote their own growth over healthy cells within this great country of ours. Average Americans from all walks of life are becoming victims fighting for whatever life they can retain, yet growing weaker and weaker by this cancerous growth.
The other component of this cancer is the most dangerous! The self-interest of the most powerful Republicans has been promoting hatred, distrust, divisive division and strife among families, neighbors, ethnic and religious groups in order to firmly implant the cancer that’s destroying the body and soul of America.
The Bush Administration has given life to a powerful and secret cancer that Americans are not familiar with and ill-equip to fight. Erik Prince the founder of Blackwater military forces, served under George H.W. Bush as an intern. His father, a billionaire, was a prominent businessman in Michigan; his family has a deep history within the Republican Party. President Bush has used Blackwater troops in the streets of New Orleans, and in the streets of Iraq and Afghanistan. President Bush has rewarded the troops well, some making $1,000 per day. Erik Prince is an extremist. Ask yourself if this type of Army could purify this country of what he and his followers consider to be undesirables living among his pure and conservative ideology.
Listen to your conservative friends, family members, and co-workers! Listen well! Many are being brainwashed to embrace the hatred of men like Rush Limbaugh, Karl Rove, Swift Boater’s, Jerome Corsi and Fox News!
There have been men in history that have destroyed lives, and countries because of hatred.
There are people in this country that’s promoting this cancer! Do you, can you afford to support those who promote this kind of cancer? McCain has demonstrated how polluted and divisive he and his cronies can be. Will his tactics and disposition change if elected? I don’t think so.
who is this guy? And why should we care what he thinks?
GOP should be ashamed of itself and its bigots....
For christ's sake ... everyone is celebrating the normination of of the first Black candidate...
These racist basters...
Hey GOP-- talk about the issues.
What's that? You can't because McCain is running on the same failed policies of the last 8 years?
Exactly.
Patrick, thanks for this helpful information. Can you please provide a link to a photo of the 2004 RNC so that we can see the "almost the same backdrop"? I'm sure you have this at your fingertips, so the sooner the better. Much appreciated.
I'm from Minnesota and I can confirm that Pawlenty not only is a moron but also a cynical politician who caters to the lowest common denominator in all political gestures and actions. He is the epitome of "unqualified" to be commander and chief. Note how MN has gone from one of the top states in education, antipoverty, children's health,l etc., to middle of the pack or lower.
I don't think the DNC was trying to be invidious.
Grow up Tim Pawlenty. You are a tool.
I guarantee you that most people voting for McCain won't realize that and he's counting on it.
Isn't this the guy responsible for all those people dying on that bridge collapse in Minnesota?
Once again, Republicans keeping their solutions a 'secret'.
Uhh, a. No it's not the same, and b. Bush was at least already President.
Just remember, the Hare loses the race.
Yes, Patrick, but in that case, the contendor was the current US president. Obama is not.
Pawenty Good 'n Plenty is an Idoit!!!
Go back to you Hole!!
This type of reaction simply proves the Republican party's vulnerable position:
-an abysmal 8 year track record
-record deficits we load on our children's backs
-no comprehensive energy policy
-and a candidate who can offer nothing new in the way of policy or procedure.
So what else can they talk about except Obama's "vanity". I give most Americans credit for being able to see through this smoke screen.
That's what I love about the Republicans, nothing of substance just mindless dribble.
Another attempt to fool the American people by skirting the real issues and focusing on playground rumors. The Republicans know they can not win this election on substance alone so it comes down to bashing one of the things that makes Obama such a great candidate... His ability to inspire and motivate- hence drawing stadium sized crowds.
Arrogant and vain? Your ignorance and deception are self motivated to benefit the few and if it works *again* this country has little to no chance...
So I guess imitation is the best form of flattery?
I will be SOOOOOO glad when this is over and Barack is President. Then the idiodic ramblers like this guy can go back into their darl little holes for another four years.
It's meant to evoke the backdrop of the "I Have A Dream Speech." Today is the 40th anniversary. I'm so tired of the political game-playing. Everything each candidate says or does gets used by the other side to score cheap points and paint a caricature of the opposition. Enough! This is a tremendously historic day of progress in our country, regardless of your party affiliation. We should all be celebrating, regardless of how we'll be voting.
Not everything Obama does is evidence of 'inexperience' and 'arrogance.' Not everything McCain does is evidence that he's a 'warmonger' and 'old.' These politicians and pundits are totally mindless and can only think in two shades and two dimensions.
I'm a Republican... and I for one hope Barack Obama does win... not because I think he will be a good president... but because of the consequences if he loses.
If Barack Obama loses this election, there will be race riots all over America. Imagine the Rodney King riots happening in every city across America. If Obama loses, that is what will happen.

RE: Terry's "native Minnesotan" take on Pawlenty
Terry,
Either you don't live in MN or you don't read the papers. Either way, you probably shouldn't be wasting your time at your polling precinct.
Yes, Pawlenty has never gained the majority of the vote, but this has more to do with the fact that Minnesota has a viable third party in the Independence Party.
Pawlenty, at least according to the latest polls, has a 55 percent approval rating, which is not bad for the most conservative governor Minnesota has seen in years.
That said, he's totally a tool. But please get your facts straight. The biggest problem with democracy is that most voters are incredibly ignorant. Prove me wrong when the entire country is able to understand the concept of marginal benefits versus marginal costs -- until then, they're morons who continue to screw this country up because they can't grasp basic economics and math. But who cares: being an idiot voter is your right as an American!
These comments show quite clearly that the readers of the Boston Globe are just flat out crazy.
The dems are crazy about the man from nowhere,no accomplishment,no background,no church except pictures of him dress up in Muslim garments,no experience and no love for his homeless brother in Kenya.
Amazing. This is a serious election, with serious problems, and we need serious people to solve those problems. How could we possibly listen to people whose sole grounds of complaint against Obama are 1) he's popular 2)He's elitist (duh..he's running for PRESIDENT...doesn't get much more elite than that) 3) He's a celebrity (Wasn't Ronald Reagan a bit of a celebrity when he ran? Isn't Ahhhhnold The Terminator a celebrity?) 4) His stage was designed by the same guy that designed Britney Spears'?
Bush's problem is that he's the schoolyard bully. McCain's problem is that he wants to be the bully but doesn't have the balls to actually slug anybody, so he just calls them names and goes "nyah, nyah, nyah, nyah nyah"
I'm amazed at how deliberately misleading Obama's speech was tonight, much like the coverage of said speech. Obama is no MLK: MLK was a Republican. MLK opposed abortion. MLK wrote his own speeches. Obama is the antithesis of the "I have a dream" speech; people are judging him based on the color of his skin and not based on the content of his character.
