Polls show race remains tight as conventions loom
DENVER -- Two new polls today show just how tight the presidential race is between Barack Obama and John McCain on the eve of the Democratic and Republican nominating conventions.
A Washington Post-ABC News poll published today shows Obama with a slight lead, 49 percent to 45 percent, among likely voters nationally. That is little changed from the previous poll in July (Obama over McCain 49-46). The latest survey was conducted just before Obama chose veteran Senator Joseph Biden to be his running mate.
As with most recent national polls, those surveyed look more favorably to Obama on economic issues, while preferring McCain on national security issues. The Post-ABC poll also indicates that voters remain skeptical of Obama's lack of experience; Biden as running mate could help address that concern. More voters -- four in 10 -- see the economy and jobs as the top issue than those who see Iraq as the top issue -- 14 percent. That could favor Obama in November.
In a separate poll on the presidential race in the battleground state of Colorado, not coincidentally the site of the Democratic convention that starts Monday, a new Quinnipiac University poll has McCain with a statistically insignificant 1 percentage point lead over Obama, 47 percent to 46 percent, among likely voters. A month earlier, McCain's lead was 2 percentage points.
Peter A. Brown, assistant director of Quinnipiac's Polling Institute, said Colorado's independent voters are evenly split between McCain and Obama. As elsewhere, men favor McCain, and women tend to prefer Obama. Coloradans lean to Obama to handle energy and economic issues, and McCain on security. The election may come down to which of those matters most to voters in November.
“Who wins the election may wind up depending on whether voters look inward to the economy and fuel prices or outward to world hot spots,” Brown said.
He said he'd be surprised if the Democrats don't get some bounce in Colorado out of holding their convention in Denver. Of course that'll be true as well for Minnesota, where the Republicans convene in St. Paul next Monday to nominate McCain.

anyone voting republican at this point should just go kill there self. becouse if i was that nieve and stupid for not seeing what this regime has done to this country i would kill myself. 500 billion dollor budget deficit is an ambarrisment to anyone that had a math class in colloge. and overseeing the biggest banking colapse in us history and waiting till it was to late to do anything about it. just like 911. a guy kills 5 thousand americans and he still free. so you go start a war and kill another 5000 americans for oil. bush is a common criminal. period. typical trailer trash texas hillbilly. southern peaple are hillrods .
The GOP will stoop to any lengths to "divide and conquer" for their own personal gain (that means "big oil" and wealthy people). GOP wants to fool and leave the American people with the false Perception and impression that Barack has no experience and is an empty suit. Let's be clear, Obama Has experience, it 's just not Washington experience and he also has Vision and inspiration, enough to enoble men to have hope again. He offers real change and forward thinking progressive ideas and solutions to Really solve the current problems facing us today. One of Barack's strongest assets is that he is unmired by the trappings of wealth and power -- that means big oil, as we have to find an alternative solution to oil, if the United States is to continue to be prosperous and to thrive. All of these attributes are which makes Barack a truly great leader of men, needed for these times!
And to damp down this false perception that he has no experience, Barack pragmatically chose for Vice President, Joe Biden, a man who is wise in foreign affairs, unlike John McCain, "who, despite the hype, doesn't seem to know as much about foreign affairs as they want us to believe! And, is also confused as to how many homes he owns and what kind of car he drives!
McCain recently talked at length about problems on the "Iraq/Pakistan border" – the countries are a thousand miles apart. Asked how to deal with Darfur, he mused about "bringing pressure on the government of Somalia". Uh – it's Sudan, Senator McCain. And he keeps expressing his desire to build up US relations with Czechoslovakia, a country that hasn't existed for 15 years. "
Those of us who care deeply about the Truth need to debunk this notion that John McCain is so knowledegeable about foreign affairs, because it is another lie they want us to swallow.
Just because McCain spent five years (5) as a POW prisoner, does not make him an expert on foreign affairs, what it does make him an expert on is on how to survive as a prisoner. Let us not be fooled again, because saying its so, does not make it so. And, saying Barack Obama does not have experience, does not make it so.
"He said he'd be surprised if the Democrats don't get some bounce in Colorado out of holding their convention in Denver."
I live in the center of Denver, and it's been surprisingly inconvenient and unpleasant having the convention and their entourage here. I'd like to see less snipers and SWAT teams, and less ostentatious $1,000/plate dinners in the center of town, but I guess they're a fact of the modern process. Still, I'll be thrilled when this is over and the military helicopters go home.
Nowhere near as bad as having the Red Sox fans come here to drink all our beer, eat all our sunflower seeds, and take the series from us in 4, though. That one really hurt.
Another misleading article from government-controlled corporate media whose intention is to steer voters toward McCain. 21st century America is savvy to the influence of government and corporate funding on media organizations.
Living in Minnesota I cringe at the idea of all the inconveniences which will be happening soon as we host the Republican Convention. However, I cringe more thinking that I live in a state which may have Stuart Smalley as its Senator and in a country having Curious George as its President.
The scariest part is that the experience level of the fictional characters I mentioned equals the experience level of the real life people they resemble.Barack Obama as President?? Al Franken as Senator??? WOWWWWWW!!!!!
Nearly all politicians are blinded by an unquenchable thirst to win. They have lost sight of the good of the country and are merely trying to greedily gain control of the government. And that's it. Politics are just an excuse for all of us to hate each other without feeling guilty. Look back at your comments. Maybe You'll realize how insanely ignorant you all are.
I was originally for Hillary or anyone who is not a republican, whch are no longer conservative in my view...those two titles do not go together anymore. When I read the blogs against Obama, I believe Bush followers are very use to hearing blahblahblahblah blah blah blah, talking points with no substance or follow through. I wonder how anyone can still believe in Bush, so called republicans and/or so called conservatives. Why does everyone else seem to be held responsible (as they should be) for their decisions, lack of judgement, errors, etc. but Bush has never been held accountable for 911, even after C. Rice said something to the affect of, we had no idea about 911, we just had intelligence that some planes were going to fly into buildings, and that did not become the weak link that should have been investigated? Dugh...and its been like that ever since.
Mark,
You are as articulate as you are wise!
listen to all of you! "if you don't see things the same way I do your a dummy, a trader, a redneck, a bleeding heart ect" asfar as Osoma being alive. noway that guy is dead in some blownout cave. IF NOT THEY WOULD HAVE HIS FACE ON TV HOLDING A NEWS PAPER TO SHOW THE DATE. Diamond Bill Clinton sold your soul to China, check and see who was the big campain bill payers Clinton's 1st run for office. And good old G.W.....well this guy is wacked, has made alot of mistakes. but one he aint made is." Has stayed the course on his war against evil.
This is 2008, and the planet is only so big. everyone has gota play by the rules or they gota go.
I am a Democrat almost every candidate I have ever voted for has been a democrat. Also I am a huge Hillary Clinton fan and supporter. Now, there has been a few occassions in local government that I voted for a republican. I must say that this is the first time that I will be voting for a Republican. I like John McCain generally as a man and I know he will do what he can to bring our soldiers home which is going to happen anyway. He at least has more than 6 years of experience. It would be nice if the two parties would stop talking trash and just post what they voted for and give a true out line of their plans. Not that generic stuff on their websites. Instead I have to go to the government web page and dance around the site to look at all the bills.
Oh and for you people who continue to tell people with a different oppinion to either kill themself or that their an idiot. Please look in the mirror.
Hey Mark, I guess half of American should kill themselves because you guys voted for Bush (who never had 1 ounce of the integrity McCain has) not once..BUT TWICE.!
McCain/Palin are Republicans that have stood up to their own party. Which is more than I can say for Obama -the-promising-money-bending-puppet.
Mark,
Your paragraph is an insult to anyone who passed 5th grade English. You may also wish to try checking your facts in the future before posting them nationally. Incorrect facts are a dead give away that the writer either doesn't know what they are talking about or is intentionally trying to mislead people.
