No deal on bailout, debate uncertain

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor September 25, 2008 06:30 PM

With reports of a done deal on the $700 billion Wall Street bailout apparently exaggerated, the first presidential debate between John McCain and Barack Obama appears in jeopardy tonight.

After a private meeting involving the presidential candidates, President Bush, and congressional leaders, participants said there was no consensus yet.

Obama then told CNN, "Eventually we're going to get a deal."

He said he believes that McCain "still wants to see something happen," but said he was concerned about injecting presidential politics into delicate negotiations.

Obama said he still plans to debate, though he plans to stay overnight in Washington to monitor the negotiations.

Asked what he would do if McCain doesn't show up, Obama answered, "I hope he does. I'm not going to speculate at this point."

McCain said in an interview aired on ABC's evening newscast that he was "very hopeful that we are making progress," but said there were still concerns about the size of the bailout.

He wouldn't commit to attend the debate at the University of Mississippi, but said he hoped there would be an agreement in time to fly to Mississippi for the forum, scheduled to start at 9 p.m. EDT

Asked whether he would debate Obama, McCain replied, "I'm very hopeful that we can."

"I think he knows I will be there," Obama said in an interview aired on ABC. "I hope he will be there as well."

Obama's campaign just sent an email to supporters urging them to go ahead with their debate watching events: "Barack is moving ahead with plans for Friday's debate. The election is just 40 days away, and the American people deserve to hear directly from the candidates about how they intend to lead our country."

Earlier, Obama's communications director, Robert Gibbs, said that a tentative deal should allow McCain to show up at the debate. "I can't imagine what the excuse would be now," Gibbs said on MSNBC.

But a McCain's spokesman told the Associated Press that while McCain is optimistic an agreement will be completed, "There's no deal until there's a deal."

Before the White House meeting, the lead Democratic negotiators in the Senate and House and their Republican counterpart in the Senate had announced what they called a broad agreement.

Senator Chris Dodd of Connecticut declined to discuss specifics, but said there was a deal on the principles. Senator Bob Bennett of Utah also appeared at the news conference to say Senate Republicans are on board. "There's really not that much of a deadlock to break," said Representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts.

But Representative John Boehner said that House Republicans have not signed off yet. “I am encouraged by the bipartisan progress being made toward an economic package that protects the interests of families, seniors, small businesses, and all taxpayers," Boehner, the House GOP leader, said in a statement. "However, House Republicans have not agreed to any plan at this point. We owe it to all those with a stake in this process to continue our discussions until we arrive at an agreement that is acceptable on both sides of the aisle -- and more importantly, one that serves the interests of American taxpayers.”

  1. Here's the deal;

The CEOs play while the taxpayers pay. Simple, really.

  1. Ugh... Americans always get screwed every-which way because of the greedy corporate big-wigs. First they sell you a dud mortgage, then when that isn't enough they take your house, and when that still wasn't enough for them, they cried poor mouth and teamed up with the feds to take more money from you in the form of tax dollars...

the throwing the government should be doing is less "lifeline" and more "in jail"

  1. I'm disgusted to be an American today. Do yourselves a favor and vote against anyone who signed off on this bailout. Vote 3rd party candidates. Vote Barr or Nader. Get these crooks out of office. $700,000,000,000.00 is the greatest heist in World history, and we're the victims.

  1. So nice of Foon to be able to somehow find a quote to include in the column to slam McCain. Wouldn't be the normal "unbiased" Globe coverage without it. What a disgrace.

  1. Great news! Now perhaps McCain will end his silly psychodrama about suspending the campaign and debates and show up tomorrow night and try to answer a few questions. Who knows, maybe after that he'll even consider releasing his running mate from sequestration so she can answer a few real questions too.

  1. RUN!!! MCCAIN!!! RUN!!!!
McSame is trying to run from his problems. Only he can't run fast enough. Seems McSame can't find the way off of his sinking ship. His terrible, erratic behavior is not demonstrative of a leader. What's he going to do now....suspend the election as he searches for AOsama Bin Laden or until he can find a suitable ruinning mate? Who's advising McSame anyway. I hear it's the Bush people. Oh! Now it makes sense. More of the same. Hmmm... I thought it seemed familiar.
    RUN MCSAME!!!! RUN!!!!

  1. Here we go again. The rich stay rich, the poor get all the help and we in the middle will ultimatly pay the Bill.
The executives and CEO's who are raking it all in, will in all probability, keep raking it in. Sure they will put a cap on what they make(instead of 30 m, they'll make 20m).
Not fair to the middle class.
I was just thinking about the Congressman and Senators. They are all huddling around trying to come up with a plan. Well they are not all "lilly white". With all their little "earmarks"....That's a place where they should start. Anybody ever figue out how much they cost the taxpayers.
I think it's time for a good old fassion Tax Revolt....Just like the Boston Tea Party

  1. What about the criminal capability of the bank executives? If no punishment is given then others will just fall in their footsteps. This looks a lot like the S&S bank bail out where bank execs walked away with fortunes. Their stock losses are not sufficient to get them off the hook. I say pay back the 100’s of millions you made in bonuses selling un-backed loans or go to jail.

  1. Oh no! What reason will McCain now give to skip the debate if the bailout is finished? I smell a chicken.

  1. Barrack Obama is a fool. This critical meeting called by President Bush takes precedence, and heaven knows how long these meetings will be dragged out--days! Shame on Obama for making this look like McCain is avoiding the debate. You're a bully, Obama. YOU should be fearing this debate. You have nothing concrete to use as a basis for any of your ideas. Step up to the plate on your own merit, Senator Obama!

  1. I think Foon's last remark (Obama, on the other hand...) was not her reporting - it was a continuation of the Gibbs quote. Just a bad paragraph break, not an independent show of support forObama. Rather than worrying about the reporter, I'm terrified about the report! What does this say to every other country that we have counseled/bullied in the past through our IMF connections, telling them that "free markets" and "no government intervention" was the only path to follow in an economic failure? How hypocritical it all becomes when the dog poop is in our own back yard for a change. I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm looking at buying land outside the country before these thieves complete their takeover of my house, my retirement, my taxes, and my financial future.

  1. Fer crissakes, most of the comments here are so parochial to rather obvious party affiliation. No wonder we are in such a mess. Perhaps if we hold are Pols ACCOUNTABLE, no matter whether party affiliation is one we are individually aligned with.

We bail out the S&L. Lessons learned?? Biz as usual for banks, get in trouble again and ask for another hand out. And also maybe McCain (and Glenn) can pal with S&L crook Charles Keating and not pay any consequence.

We give tax cuts upon tax cuts, targeting mostly the wealthy. lessons learned?? Huge deficits and public debt to be passed down to our children.

We start a war on false pretenses - and not fund it. ?? lessons learned?? No one is held accountable.

My view personally: Washington is need of a major house cleaning. Nothing wrong with a two party system, but why these two.?? Our leaders continue to fail us.

  1. The law makers acted too fast. Don't they realize that McCain is on his way to DC to straighten everything out? How can they move forward on this without McCain and his great leadership skills?

Looks like the mere thought of having mcCain throw his 2-cents into the mix really lite a fire to get it done before he arrived.

  1. Hope this is the end of the financial ordeal or just the beginning? McCain now has no excuse to delay the debate or wait.. this is not finalized yet. Bush has to sign it too. This may take a few more days until then McCain will not debate although he has nothing to do with it. Good ploy to tell voters that he was instrumental in resolivng the financial metldown of the coutry and is ready to lead. Cunning old man.

  1. The Globe is another liberal propaganda machine, desperate to get Obama elected.
Why is the "mainstream media" liberal?
Because it is based in New York, California, and Illinois, all liberal demographics. The reporters are educated in liberal institutions, and live in liberal urban centers, and have a liberal world-view.
"Fly over" viewpoints are not represented, which is sad, since they are at least half the population.

  1. Be advised that tomorrow's debate will be cancelled by McCain because McCain will be on the lawn of the Rose Garden with Presient Bush signing the Bailout package into law.

McCain will be seen as the "Creator" of the package and the debate won't happen.

The Dems need to wait until **AFTER** the debate to pass the package or McCain and Bush will steal the debate press by signing the resolution.

    **BREAKING NEWS**
be advised that Karl Rove is up to his old tricks.

Bush started the war in Iraq!
Bush & Cheny's cronies profitted from the war!
Bush sort of responded to Katrina!
Bush has a $700 billion plan to solve the Wall Street collapse!
    McCain supports Bush 90% percent!
    McCain picked Palin!
McCain suspended his campaign because he is an expert on the economy!
McCain 'alone' will solve the Wall Street crisis!
PLEASE LOOK CLOSELY AT WHAT'S WRITTEN ABOVE!
How does it make you feel? Makes you want to vote for McSame doesn't it?

  1. This is a farce!!!! HERE YOU GO AGAIN JOHN McCAIN.It's pretty funny that McCain is'nt even on the commitee and Obama has been keeping up on things talking to Dodd,Frank, and Tester that are ahead of commitee, but McCain hasn't called any of them once, but he calls on Obama to cancel the debate due to the economic situation, then counts on Bush to help him make this happen just because he wants to bye time hoping the issue of the economy will go away since he knows nothing about the economy, and is partially to blame for the bad economy since he has voted against regulations since he has been in the senate. This is straight out of the Rove book!!! If your going to be President you had better be able to take on more than 1 task at a time and I really don't think 90 minutes is going to make a difference in this bill.I SAY "DON'T BE A COWARD McCAIN,FACE BARACK ,I THOUGHT YOU WERE A HERO THIS ISN'T HOW HEROS ACT!"

  1. I'm sick of McCain holding the country hostage for politics. It's not like he was there hammering out the details of the bailout plan. How dare he hold everyone hostage to this ploy about not showing up for the debate until an agreement is made? Mind you this is an agreement that many people are against and is being proposed by the same person who said the economy was sound (Paulson) a few weeks ago... The same people who are going to pay that $700B deserves to hear their candidates debate as scheduled. Is he going to put his presidency on hold if he makes office and the economy tanks again? Because it will if he's elected... ENOUGH of McCain's fighter pilot ploys!

  1. the tragic irony with this entire situation is the secrecy behind it, yet they expound upon us to have faith in them as they try to "fix" the "problems the economy is facing." I recall less than three weeks ago being told our economy was strong, sound, and stable by DUMB-YA from Texas who is occupying the White House. I recall Paulson stating this last week when he said AIG was the last bailout. then out of the blue comes 700B that can damn this nations fiscal structure?...I smell something rotten. I don't even think Rove nor Bush number 1 would have had a set of brass like that. the re*uclicans know they aren't going to win so I think this 700B is exaggerated a few times over to scare the public: its called political maneuvering. and what scared the pants off mcshame is all of his houses: he has so many he can't remember the number the dumb fool. so I guess you can call the bailout bailing the re*uclicans out of a losing election.

  1. If the mainstream media was liberal then Bush wouldn't have been given a free ride on his lies leading up to the war in Iraq. They are all owned by a few HUGE companies which are owned by the people the Republicans serve.

The Republicans are probably working together to delay the agreement to support McCains cowardly avoidance of the debate - and equally important his scheme to delay the Palin/Biden debate.

She is a nut job, and a debate with her having to answer questions will be very bad for McCain's bid.

Posted by Steve September 25, 08 07:50 PM
  1. So, will Republicans purposefully stymie efforts to firm up a bailout so that McCain can weasel out of the debate? Once the debate is postponed, will they magically come to an agreement?

  1. Can you spell McScrewed?

John McCain should retire as he's doing NO ONE any favors. The fact that he thinks he can sweep in as the great savior is an insult to the intelligence and terribly underestimates the American peoples ability to see through the BS. Between the lack of integrity demonstrated by this "great" hero in his campaign efforts and his complete sell out to the right wing in his bringing in an amateur like Miss Palin from Alaska one can't help but wonder; what in hell was he thinking?

    This is a McShame

  1. Instead of $700B for the bailout, why not make it $650B. Take the other $50B, spread it out over 5-10 years & improve our infrastructure (roads & bridges). Require all parts USA made. This would add a lot of jobs to the economy.

The answer isn't to bailout the rich-bankers. Since they didn't think or conduct business properly, why should taxpayers pay the price for their mistakes. The CEO's should all kick in some of their salaries! HA! Looking to relocate to Europe or Canda, the USA is going in a downward spiral.
I have more graduate degrees & experience & work hard, still not able to make it in Massachusetts. Shameful!

  1. Sweden went through this in the early 1990's, It was about the same proportion of the country's economy. They didn't do a bail out, they did a "loan." The loan was repaid in a couple of years.

My thinking is that Bush and Co. went for a "bail out" on the hope that we'd all panic and grant them the money without thinking.

  1. Something is wrong with McCain!! He is not the McCain of years ago. In 2001, he planned to change parties and wanted to be Kerrys running mate. He has never been my favorite person to start with but anymore, I can hardly stand him. His stand on Iraq, his votes to deregulate the banks, his constant smear ads, his stupid move to have a totally unknown as his running mate (that had to go to 5 schools to get her degree in journalism) his running off to Washington when he was asked not to be there, etc.

His refusal to show up for the Larry King show. Now the Letterman show. And now also the debate? He is a total nut case.

The current crooks running the white house sold us a bill of lies on the war and are trying to do the same with Wall Street. Rushing to spend $700 billion on fraudulent companies and their executives is a bad idea.

The world has not imploded since this plan was hatched.

And, where do you think Paulson, Bernake and all those treasury officials will be looking for work in 6 weeks (after the election)? you guessed it, Wall Street.

    This stuff makes me sick!

  1. Give me a break. More liberal spin from the Globe about Obama as usual. One of the worst financial crises in our history and McCain is the one being slammed for wanting to go back to his job as a Senator while important Congressional negotiations are going on. Meanwhile Obama would rather not be doing his job, but doing the only thing he has done since being elected Senator, which is run for President.

As for the Palin bashers are you sure you want to really have Biden speaking in public? Loved his recent gem about how FDR went on TV to speak to the nation in 1929 about the Wall Street crash. Too bad Hoover was President then, and there was no television to go on to speak to the nation.

  1. Sept 25 Barney F says there is no deadlock to break and "McCain is making a play to try and say he forced this I guess. . .".

Sept 28 Barack O says McCain gets no credit for forging a deal on the bailout and he deserves credit because he had fixed all the problems two weeks before before anyone knew there were problems.

Are these two great leaders or what? They make a great couple!
