Biden scrambles back on message
The Republicans can reset their Joe Biden gaffe clock.
The Democratic vice presidential nominee went off message in an interview broadcast Monday night and had to quickly pull back.
Asked by CBS anchor Katie Couric about whether he was disappointed by the tone of the campaign and the flood of attack ads, including one mocking Republican nominee John McCain's self-professed aversion to computers and email.
"I thought that was terrible, by the way," Biden replied.
Couric pressed on, "Why'd you do it then?"
"I didn't know we did it, and if I'd had anything to do with it, we would have never done it," Biden said.
McCain spokesman Brian Rogers quickly weighed in with a statement: “While the New York Times and other media outlets were silent in the face of Barack Obama's shameless and dishonorable attack on John McCain, even Obama's own running mate has now condemned the ad as 'terrible,' admitting he never would have approved it. Barack Obama has brought the sleazy gutter politics of Chicago to our national stage, exposing his call for a ‘new politics’ as a lie and embarrassing even his own running-mate with the low road campaign he's running.”
Within about an hour, Biden had issued a clarification through the Obama press office, trying to get back on message: “I was asked about an ad I’d never seen, reacting merely to press reports. As I said right then, I knew there was nothing intentionally personal in the criticism of Senator McCain’s views which look backwards not forwards and are out of touch with the new economic challenges we face today. Having now reviewed the ad, it is even more clear to me that given the disgraceful tenor of Senator McCain’s ads and their persistent falsehoods, his campaign is in no position to criticize, especially when they continue to distort Barack’s votes on an issue as personal as keeping kids safe from sexual predators.”

lets count the gaffes
1)hillary would make a better vp
2) barack osama
3) my ad was terrible
MMMMK
Within about an hour, Biden had issued a clarification through the Obama press office..
Key part of that... "through the Obama press office"
Joe told the truth the first time about the unconscionable ad, before the Obama press office changed his words up.
I love Joe.
An "unconscionable " ad? Please. As someone posting in another forum insightfully pointed out - Stephen Hawking can use a computer. So enough with going to the war-time injury well to deflect any and all criticism leveled at McSame.
Well geez, I don't think there is a "Biden press office" for Biden to issue a clarification from.
The man says what's on his mind, let others make up their own, if they have one. Just reviewed the ad and it's pretty funny and ACCURATE (as in "no lies"). McCain could learn a thing or two
Fact is the ad was true, Gramps said out of his own mouth he does not know how to email and is not computer literate. he also said he does not know anything about the economy, called women an obscene name and mentioned concerns about a country that does not exist as well as thought Pakistan boredered Iran but I guess the American public should overlook all that because he says he is a maverick and a hero
Joe spoke honestly. He WOULD'VE been offended by an attack of that nature and after he actually got to see the ad, he clarified. I would like to point out, however, that at least Biden SPOKE to the press. He's been non-stop for weeks. Palin just announced that she is banning reporters from her meeting with leaders from all over the world - only photographers are invited. So maybe the reason we aren't commenting on Palin gaffes, is that everything is being carefully orchestrated so that we simply aren't hearing them! Go Joe! You're doing a great job.
wow, funny how obama's followers will defend anything...biden is not a man who says what's on his mind, he is an idiot.
Biden made the mistake of saying what he really thought before clearing it with the Obamanation's office. Poor Joe, you should have said No to that VP job.
At least Joe is actually talking to the press, and not hiding from it like some VP candidates....
THE FIRST LEADERSHIP ACTION IN BECOMING A PRESIDENT IS CHOOSING THEIR RUNNING MATE. IF I WAS TO JUDGE OBAMA VS MCCAIN WITH RESPECT TO THEIR VICE PRESIDENT CHOICES, MCCAIN CLEARLY EXEMPLIFIED SUPERIOR LEADERSHIP. JOE BIDDEN MAY BE A NICE GUY, BUT HE DOES NOT APPEAR AS SMARTOR AS COMPETENT AS PALIN. HE CLEARLY IS NOT A GOOD CHOICE. HILLARY WOULD HAVE BEEN 100% BETTER, EVEN BY HIS OWN ADMISSION.
As a Repub, I must commend Biden for being honest about his opinion. It was wrong to bust McCain's chops because he had both of his arms pretty much destroyed while a prisoner. And nobody has said he doesn't use a computer. He's been a big advocate of technology advancements. Give the man a break. It was a cheap shot and Biden acknowledged it. Good for him.
To be totally fair, I will also submit that McCain has taken his fair share of cheap shots at Obama. Neither is squeaky clean.
PEACE.
does anybody know what specific disability the war wounds have caused to his hands? are there other physical limitations from war injuries or other medical conditions?
Joe Biden reminds me of those machines that are used to select Power Ball numbers. He has ping pong balls of thoughts popping around in his head until something pops out of his mouth. God bless this guy! He is the only source of humor that the Democrats have. Everyone else in the Democrat campaign seem so dour and serious about every little slight or perceived injury to their precious self esteem.
What has been lost for a very long time is the understanding that in a Presidential election the "other guy" may win. If each campaign spends most of its time denigrating the other candidate, the nation will always have a president who starts out being despised by almost half the people. This is not good for the country.
What happened to the notion of upholding one's own ideas and proposals?
Oh my God, a Vice Presidential candidate that makes a mistake in an interview. Biden's effort to respond to questions candidly and with a few gaffes is ten times better than the robot statements and lies coming from Palin, who will not permit interview's until her Republican handler's finish outfitting her for George Bush's emperor;s cloths. Did we not learn anything from the last eight years. We need to focus on the issues and tremendous task ahead for America. We need substance and not packaging of the candidates to solve the problems ahead. Focus on what is important to open up a discussion of the issues and stop the distractions.
It's actually a good sign when your VP choice bumbles along in the press. Dan Quayle anyone? Only Biden isn't nearly as entertaining as Quayle.
It's Biden being Biden............no biggie, the man speaks his mind. When Sen. Obama chose him he stated he wanted to pick someone who would challenge him on issues.
Biden says he never saw the commercial, it's too bad that honesty has become a fault. Should he have said it,? Of course not. But he shoots from the hip at times. I can't fathom how this is an issue and how it has any legs given the crises this country is in. Gramps and the no-nothing from Alaska will exploit Biden's comments, but that's show biz folks. Funny how this issue came out 3 days after the Teleprompter Lady's computer got hacked. She may know less about internet security than Gramps. After all, he did invent the Blackberry..
That makes Joe more Human and in touch with voters.
He is not shielded like Palin. Moreover, Obama does not give him a script to read. He is allowed to talk to people freely although that posses risk to commit some gaffes.
I'm sure Obama talks to him all the time and gave him an agenda for the General election. That is management, not micromanagement.
Joe is no puppet, Sarah is.
The Ad was absolutely relevant! Do you want a president in this day and age to be clueless about technology and not show a desire to learn. PC's are almost 30 years old and McCain has not bothered to figure out how they work, it tell me a lot about his aptitude and attitude. How will this guy deal with Cyber threats, how will lead our nation to be #1 in technology again? Dont count on Sarah Palin to provide answers either
At least Senator Biden is out talking directly to voters and to reporters, unlike Governor Palin who hides behind her campaign handlers. Besides, all those gaffes just make honest Joe look more like my neighbor, more like a baseball dad -- that seems to work for Palin, right?
Obviously, Senator Biden needs to get back on message, and I'm sure he will, but will any reporter notice? The media has been covering Governor Palin as if they were a hired documentary crew, while at the same time largely ignoring Biden's efforts day after day. It seems the Senator is only news when he makes a gaffe, and that is not fair.
America does not have to wait while a candidate crams to get ready to be our next Vice President. America already has a candidate who is an expert on foreign policy, knows domestic economics, and can even balance family and career, too. His name is Senator Joe Biden. He deserves far more respect from the media. He already has mine. Obama-Biden 2008!
It's refreshing to hear a candidate just blurt out what he really thinks for a change. Watching McCain last week as he regurgitated whatever mantra de jour had been handed to him that morning while we watched the Market tank was actually painful, except the "fire Cox" thing, which was the absolutely hilarious "real McCain,"
I hope Sen. Obama can come up with some "short and to the point" answers for the issues before the debate, and stay on point. He actually admitted in one interview that one of his failings is a tendency to "over analyze" (my interpretation of what he actually said, because he was over analyzing while he was answering the question. It was comforting to be able to see that Somebody in this campaign actually THINKS.
THE CARL ICAN cant use a computer oesnt he hold seats on some of the big technology companies like YAHOO an MOTOROLA
Of course, no reporters for Palin....she knows she has no experience and doesn't want everyone to see it. Only photogs, because she thinks she is something else....this is all about HER and no one else. not the country either.....go back to Bedrock, Wilma. You are a disgrace to the female race. Get your head out of your butt....backward-ass donkey.
Sen. Biden is his own man -- he's not afraid to speak his mind, and Sen. Obama chose him as VP in part because he knew he'd get Biden's uncensored take on things. On the other hand, Gov. Palin is being prevented from saying anything on her own, and is constantly surrounded by McCain and Bush people lest she even try to speak. John McCain will never listen to her advice (much less TAKE any of it).
Should Rick Davis Step Aside?
Since 2006, the federally sponsored mortgage giant Freddie Mac has paid at least $345,000 to John McCain's campaign manager Rick Davis. Davis was charged with the task of promoting home ownership while at the same time counter efforts of the government to impose tighter loan regulations. This is considered as one of the major causes of the current toxic financial crisis in the country since the 1930s economic depression.
Although the previous arrangement had terminated, Rick Davis himself approached Freddie Mac in 2006 and asked for a new consulting arrangement. As a result, Davis's Washington, D.C. based lobbying firm known as Davis Manafort, received $15,000 a month from Freddie Mac until last month. The arrangement was approved by Hollis McLoughlin, Freddie Mac's vice president for external relations. Davis being a campaign Manager and a potential Chief of Staff for the next President it was felt you couldn't say no.
Despite of this new revelation, it is my opinion that it is not an ideal time for Davis to be requested to step aside as the general election is only six weeks away.
Joe Senile Biden actually believes that FDR was president during the Great Depression. Seems Joe Senile Biden forgot that Herbert Hoover was president.
Joe Senile Biden actually believes that FDR was on TV. Seems Joe Senile Biden forgot that TV was even invented yet.
Joe Senile Biden is making Dan Quayle look like Harvard Summa Cum Laude.
Joe Senile Biden is losing his mind. He will step down as VP candidate on Oct 5th after the VP debates. Obama will beg Bill and Hillary for Hillary to be the VP nominee.
“When the stock market crashed, Franklin D. Roosevelt got on the television and didn’t just talk about the, you know, the princes of greed. Biden said, ‘Look, here’s what happened,”‘ Barack Obama’s running mate recently told the “CBS Evening News.”
Except, Republican Herbert Hoover was in office when the stock market crashed in October 1929. There also was no television at the time; TV wasn’t introduced to the public until a decade later, at the 1939 World’s Fair.
Obama and Hillary are "dumb like foxes". This is all part of the ploy for Obama to dump Biden and then put Hillary on the ticket.
This will happen on Oct 5th after the VP debates so Hillary doesn't have to debate Sarah and have her (Hillary's) clocked cleaned.
slipsliddingaway? um ahhhhh are you on something, or is your sanity slip sliding away? Palin is a pretty face, and just a distraction from the real problem The GOP is trying to hide, McCain the war hero isn't a REAL leader and does not have the tools to be president......if he is a maverick more like a FORD Maverick... oh and by the way slidding isn't a word or is it where you crawled out of? Our country needs something new, not recycled news/change/garbage.....Whats that old saying? The evil we know versus the evil we don't know..........which one is better? well i am willing to bet on a new direction, ans assuming the powers that be (illuminati etc... ) let the people decide, and not flex their control on the facts and let U.S. citizens vote (just the living registered ones of course), we might have something to look for!
