Change is coming, McCain promises

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor September 4, 2008 11:03 PM

After one speech after another demonizing and belittling Barack Obama, Republican presidential nominee John McCain sought tonight to convince voters that he has the vision and skills to change Washington -- not his Democratic rival.

"Let me just offer an advance warning to the old, big-spending, do-nothing, me-first, country-second crowd," McCain declared in his acceptance speech. "Change is coming."

Voters in every poll say they want change in the nation's capital, and even though McCain has been in Congress for 26 years, he highlighted his maverick reputation to argue tonight that he is the one who can bridge the partisan divide and reform Washington.

"When we tell you we're going to change Washington...you can count on it," McCain pledged.

His maverick reputation means he knows who he works for, he said: "I work for you."

McCain took the stage, reconstructed into more of a town hall format, after a video about his life, especially his military record. "John McCain, John McCain," delegates chanted, then "USA! USA!"

The Arizona senator paid tribute to his primary opponents and then President Bush, though he has distanced himself from him, saying that the president led the country through the "dark days" after Sept. 11.

"I won't let you down," he told his supporters, then reached out to undecided voters, saying he plans to earn their trust.

Then he told Obama: "We'll go at it for the next two months," citing big differences on policies but pledged, "you have my respect and my admiration."

"But let there be no doubt, my friends, we're going to win this election," McCain declared as delegates rose to their feet.

At least twice in the opening minutes, his speech was interrupted by protestors, who were shouted down with "USA" chants and removed by security.

McCain said he has a record of fighting corruption and reminded voters of his support for the troop surge in Iraq. "I don't mind a good fight," he said, but "what you fight for is the real test."

He named specific people who are struggling in the economy or who need help, and said, "They matter to me." One of them was Matthew Stanley, the New Hampshire soldier who died in Iraq and whose bracelet his mother gave McCain, who continues to wear it.

He criticized his own party for being changed by Washington and losing voters' trust, then vowed that the party of "Reagan and Lincoln" will "get back to basics".

He warned that Obama will raise taxes, increase government spending, close borders to trade, and enact a government-run healthcare system. After each assertion, the delegates booed.

(Obama would dispute the characterization of his positions, pointing out, for instance, that he wants to cut taxes for those making less than $250,000 a year, while letting President Bush's tax cuts lapse for those making more.)

McCain then launched into a laundry list of his proposals on education, energy independence, and national security, among other issues.

McCain then went into his strong suit -- defense and national security.

"We face many dangerous threats in this dangerous world," he said. "But I'm not afraid of them. I'm prepared for them. I know how the military works."

"I know how the world works, I know there's good and evil in it," he added.

He pledged to use all his knowledge and relationships with world leaders to build a stable peace.

"I hate war, it's terrible beyond imagination," McCain said.

McCain closed his speech with his pledge to serve his country. "I've been an imperfect servant of this country for many years. I've been a servant first, last, and always," he said.

He told in detail his 5 1/2 years as a prisoner of war, which he said taught him the greatest lesson of his life -- that no one can stand alone forever, and to serve a cause greater than self.
"I fell in love with my country when I was a prisoner in someone else's. I loved it not just for the many comforts of life here. I loved it for its decency; for its faith in the wisdom, justice and goodness of its people. I loved it because it was not just a place, but an idea, a cause worth fighting for. I was never the same again. I wasn’t my own man anymore. I was my country’s.”

Mocking Obama, he said he wasn't running for president because he feels anointed.

"My country saved me, my country saved me, I cannot forget it," McCain said. "And I will fight for her as long as I draw breath, so help me God."

The Obama campaign just issued this response to McCain's speech: “Tonight, John McCain said that his party was elected to change Washington, but that they let Washington change them. He’s right. He admonished the ‘old, do-nothing crowd’ in Washington, but ignored the fact that he’s been part of that crowd for twenty-six years, opposing solutions on health care, energy, and education. He talked about bipartisanship, but didn’t mention that he’s been a Bush partisan 90% of the time, that he’s run a Karl Rove campaign, and that he wants to continue this President’s disastrous economic and foreign policies for another four years. With John McCain, it’s more of the same.

“That’s not the change Americans need. Barack Obama has taken on the special interests and the lobbyists in Illinois and in Washington, and he’s won. As President, he’ll cut taxes for 95% of all working families, provide affordable health care to every American, end the tax breaks for companies that ship our jobs overseas, and eliminate the oil we import from the Middle East in ten years,” said Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton.

.

Oh, please.....he pledges to end the rancor? His ads and his VP pick and his statements all prove otherwise. Same old, same old. McCain has not taken the high road yet in this campaign. It seems just like the Bush administration: say the opposite of what you actually do, and say it often enough, the people who don't pay attention believe you are telling the truth.
We have a chance to fix all this, and I am so afraid we won't.

After so many extremely vicious and divisive speeches over the past couple of days, how does John McCain think he'll be able to bridge the parties? It's clear to me that the Republican party wants more of the same -- power, money, and the ability to make very bad decisions for this country.

How many batches of KoolAid did they go through to elicit such horseshit enthusiasm for a candidate who stepped/slept on more lines than he delivered?

I have never seen such a sorry excuse for a speech, or a more anesthetizing performance.

At least he wasn't condescending and mean spirited like his running mate Palin, but it's going to take a lot more than one speech to convince me that the Republican Party is really going to change at all after what we've seen them do over the last 8 years. Does he really think he can convince us so easily?

a little too long and boring address, expecially to the independents and non-republics. John Macain may be a war hero but there is more that is demanded from a Presidential candidate -- especially in the area of judjement.

McCain doesn't work for anyone but McCain, like Bush.
As an America I don't need McCain, and Palin up there spreading
horrible lies about their opponents. This is why they can't be
President or Vice President, they never talk about issues
of the middle class who make America, all they care about is
tearing down Obama and Biden, Bush was the same way and look
where we are today.
McCain is a foul mouth, hot tempered person who lies and doesn't care
about anyone but himself, Hmmm I wonder who this sounds like.
Bush and McBush nothing will change it will only get worse.

I am neutral and still undecided.

I have watched both democrats and repubs convention in full now. I think the only speech that DID outline change and that DID say he would cross the line is McCain.

There are going to be jabs between the parties. That is nothing new.

\Mc Cain is playing dirty politics as usual. Is that what he calls change? Why should we vote for him?

Did Obama write McCain's speach? Talk about plagerism, McCain took everything from Obama's speach that his focus groups liked and just cut and pasted it into his (well acutally his speach writers cut and pasted, McCain doesn't write speaches, Obama does). McCain used to say Obama didn't have enough experience, so he picked a VP with way less experience than Obama. Then McCain used to say that Obama has lofty ideas but doesn't ever explain how he is going to accoplish them, so now McCain delivers a speach where he tells us that he will make everything good again but he doesn't even hint at how he will do it.

I wish people who didn't know anything about what the candidates positions are, weren't allowed to vote but alas in America any red neck with a pickup truck can get his but over to a poling place and vote for anyone who makes them feel "proud to be an American". Speaking of which, doesn't McCain have any shame at all about using his 40 year old POW staoies to get votes?

Bellicosity reigns supreme.
John McCain wants to fight and wants you to join him.
Trained to use a hammer, he sees clearly: there are nails out there and they need a hammerin'

I hope you all enjoyed the Iraq adventure, if this man wins the presidency we'll be seeing more where that came from.
"Fight, stand up and fight!" he invites.

He wants to end partisan rancor, but enjoins the faithful to fight while the theme song "barracuda" pounds in the background..."your're gonna burn, burn, burn, ....barracuda..."

(Didn't get around to the draft this time....maybe we'll get to hear more about that next time)

Confrontations with Iran, Russia, and North Korea... are eagerly envisioned.
Classic Republican focus on outside affairs while skipping through domestic issues.

For those of us who have morals and convictions, McCain's speech was very encouraging in comparison to the liberal agenda that Obama fed us last week. Obama may be a smooth talker but I hope we do not have to see how lacking in experience and judgment that he is when America is faced with a challenge. At least McCain has the experience and the backbone to face those challenges!

I was bitterly disappointed in the speech delivered both by Palin and McCain. Its obvious the Palin part of the ticket is to gain support from women that possibly may have voted for Hillary. Does anyone find it strange that Palin is from Alaska (BIG OIL STATE)? I was a die hard republican once, and have withdrawn sadly from supporting that party. I simply cannot vote for more of the same. I am a veteran of the Navy, and I can respect McCain's position as a POW, however, it does not soley prepare him to lead this country. Sara Palin's experience and background should be questioned. If something were to happen to McCain in office, then she would be president of the United States. Being a govenor of a state that has a population of 519,000 people for 20 months cannot possibly prepare you for the magnitude of running the greatest country in the world. I am disapointed in all that is going on politically in this land. Sadly disapointed. I hope the American people see through this farce. May God have mercy on us.

The american public is thirsty for change. Change from the old politics and policies of the past. Change to a more positive direction for this country. ZI, for one, welcome the prospect of change. Senator Obama has campaigned on a platform of change. Change we can count on. So, when we, as voters, enter the polls this November to lower our collective buckets into the wells of change we must choose the well that has substance to draw from. Despite all the rhetoric, I firmly believe that those who choose the Obama well will find it dry with no depth to draw from, Much like the accomplishments of the man, there is nothing rally there except an attractive wellhead that is, in reality dry. Perhaps, with time and strengthening that will change over time to be a viable source to draw from, but not in the next four years. The only hope for change that will happen is from McCain. I , for one, want change and not 4 more years of Bush. That's why I believe McCain is our best choice.

It came to me tonight during the GOP convention that this Presidential race is very much a race about White American power. As I looked over the sea of white republicans (with a few strategically placed token blacks) that the entire Republican format is actually all about maintaining the upper white class male domination of America. Christianity, Corporations, Energy. 5% of all the wealth in America is owned by a small group of Deep South White Males. Woman are not equal, Blacks are not equal, gays are not equal, jews are not equal Asians, South Americans, Arabs, Indians you name it...we are all a step down from the white catholic male. America is diverse. Break the domination. Spread the wealth. All men and woman are created equal. Only Obama can save America.

I wish people would pay less attention to speeches and campaign commercials and the media circus. The best way to tell where someone's going is to look at where they've been. Look at Obama's and McCain's voting records, then decide.

If McCain really is for change then he better change his stand on illegal immigrants and English as the official national language. In poll after poll Americans want English as the one and only official national language so why isn't McCain making it a campaign issue? Also since 9/11/2001 illegal immigrants have murdered 27,000 Americans. That doesn't include those killed by drunken illegals in car accidents. More Americans are being killed within our own country by illegal invaders than troops being killed in Iraq and Afghanistan and McCain and Obama ignore that and want to make them citizens. Our jails are overflowing with illegal immigrants. How can McCain & Obama be so stupid as to believe that if legalize illegals they will become law biding citizens? McCain is too bull headed.

Are they going to make rash decisions about serious subjects based on their selfish ideas of right and wrong? Are they going to ridicule intelligence and thump the Bible as the ultimate intelligence? Is all that going to make us safe and free? I'm afraid their rhetoric is so categorical that it will put us all in jeapordy. Obama briefly looked like he might have something good to offer in his opposition to the war in Iraq, but he has long since abandoned that. He is more than ready to inherit all the Republican wars and keep those fires burning. Obama-Biden really sucks as a choice this time round -- they offer nothing inspiring to vote for at all.

In his own way, McCain is every bit as bad as Obama. They are very different in many ways but each is in his own way pernicious and both are owned by the people who pull the strings behind the stage.

The sole spark of interest and hope in this presidential election is Sarah Palin. Since she agreed to be on the same ticket with McCain, the question remains about how far she has decided to compromise on her original core values and beliefs in order to get ahead in the system. But she is the one thing in this campaign that a person can actually feel good about voting for. I will probably vote for her, while hoping that McCain croaks early in his presidency.

I liked the speech. It sure was better than Barack's speech last Thursday. His speech was so boring bloggers can't remember it. I'm a former Democrat turned Independent who got sick of the bleeding heart Demo Gods wanting everything for nothing. I see in my own district what the Democrat in the House has been doing for "her people" absolutely nothing. Today that same Congresswoman's son admitted defeat by admitting his guilt in court. The soon to be EX-Mayor of Detroit is a so called Super Delagate which means doesn't do crap for the people. I want someone whose main goal is to work for the people. I sure don't want someone as Commander in Chief whose main goals reek of socialism. I've done my research and I sure don't want to live in a country full of Socialists. Which is why I'm choosing McCain/Palin in November.

McCain is 100% right on, and he knows exactly what type of people you are who write these condescending criticisms: you're the same type of people who derided soldiers who had fought on their behalf. You hear what you want to hear - McCain has always been the type of politician who doesn't care what's popular, but he cares about what he thinks is best for his country - take his authoring of the immigration bill that was disgracefully shot down by conservative media for example. That was not for popularity - it was for what he believed was best for the country. You don't hear him giving specifics? I heard plenty tonight, and he has plenty of specifics on record to back up what he says. I've listened carefully for an Obama argument that will explain just what Obama intends to "change" and more importantly, how he will really do it. And yet the sliver in your enemy's eye is so easy to spot. It always is, but please, try to use some intelligence. I have investigated deeply the issues facing our country, I have scrutinized the stances and the records of both of these men, and Obama comes out of that inquiry looking like a waif of a shadow of a leader. Can he speak? Yes, he certainly can. And there's not much more to him, to his political record, to his social record, to him in general. I read a bumper sticker that resounded with me: "I already have a Savior. I need a president."

Boston, sorry but your extreme bias is again showing. You must do something about that because remember, the press is support to report the news, not try to brainwash its readers like is done in the communist countries. Or did your reporters go to school in one of those countries; sounds like it. I hate articles in newspapers that are not just the news like I used to read and could make up my own mind. You are doing a disservice to the American people and to our country. I have started to quit reading the hard papers and just select the ones on the internet that I believe are reporting fair and accurate reports, regardless of which candidate they are reporting on. But you, dear journalists and editors of the Boston paper, have stepped way, way over the line to fair reporting. I can only hope that newspapers likes your lose readers and go out of business.

McCain has been in Washington for over 26 yrs - how much more time he needs in Washington to deliver on "change?"

I was a Hillary supporter, giving chance to McCain. Selecting Palin for VP shows it's all Republican party business as usual again: pit-bull mentality, guns, hunting, anti-environmental attitudes, isolating US from the rest of the world, talking but doing little in terms of the economic good of the common person - in summary only representing a segment of whites, instead of the national majority. Even the convention hall crowd did not represent the US demographics.

RNC speeches lacked substance, so did most of the DNC speeches. I'm leaning towards "Biden-Obama" ticket or staying home. Still elections are 2 months away. Focus needs to turn to issues and more importantly on substantive approaches of solving them. Americans are not fools - they don't get sentimental from speeches and vote, they use objectivity when voting. I am just another person in Michigan still looking for a real, substantive debate on "change."

I am a pro-life, Catholic mother of four children. Before I decided to stay home full time to take care of my kids, I worked as an attorney.

I attended Catholic schools from K-12, have participated in pro-life rallies in Washington, and have been a regular lector at Sunday mass for the past 10 years.

I am also a true Independent voter. I voted for President George Bush, for President Bill Clinton twice, and for President George "W" Bush twice.

All that said, I cannot bring myself to vote for Senator McCain with Governor Palin on the ticket. Governor Palin's doctrinaire willingness to impose her values, morals and religion upon on those she governs (for example, cutting funds to an Alaska transitional program for unwed mothers) is the antithesis of what 38 years of living as part of the one holy catholic and apostolic Church have taught me.

Let me conclude by praying the Prayer of St. Francis:

"Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
when there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.
Grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood, as to understand,
to be loved as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life."

My friend Ret. Col. Edison Miller served the same amount of time with John McCain as a POW. And according to Col Miller everyrting McCain said about how he was treated by the guards is total bullshit. He was a screaming cry baby always wanting more attention by saying his father was an Admiral and his Grandfather was an admiral. His arms were not broken twice, his arms were fractured before he came to Hanoi Hilton.l Col. Miller is trying to get his true story out but the conservative talk show hosts want not part of the truth. Exposure of McCain must be made before it's too late in the game. Especially, the GI's who suffered in the ditches and now their VA Hospital support is going to be cut by McCain if he gets in. His motto is to keep fighting until we will. What a box of cornflakes? These are serious and dangerous time and a hothead like McCain is putting our entire nation into harm's way.

you say you want someone for peace. Hello people!!! there are billions of people in the world that are at this very moment trying to KILL US. Iran, Russia, China along with every muslim extremist. Have you ever heard of the twelfth immum. Chances are you will very, very soon, if you have not already. The president of Iran thinks the world has to be in a world war for his messiah to return. If you bothered to read the Bible that you put down, you would see that it tells you and i everything that is going to happen and is happening right now. This sacred book was written more than 2000 years ago and it has never been wrong on anything. Wars and rumors of wars, earthquakes in divers places, problems with no solutions, one world government, the reformation of an Israeli state after more than 2000 years, never has a nation been reborn after such a time. The rise and fall of every world power, ever. increase in knowledge, people traveling to and frow over the earth, round earth, ocean currents, I suggest you pick up a bible and READ IT you might figure out what is really going on. As for darwins theory, yes, it is still just a theory, being taught as fact. the more scientists try to prove it the more impossible it seems that it can be. Evolution is impossible, study the facts. We've been duped!! Thank you God for people of faith coming into office. If politicians spent more time on their knees praying and less time taking kick backs from lobbyists the country would be in much, much better shape. Do some research and see what taking God and prayer out of the schools has done for this country. and there are more people dying from cigarettes in a week in this country than have died in the whole war/wars since 9/11. yes, people choose to smoke, it is a free country. people also voluntarily join the armed services, shock, gasp, that is why they teach them to kill people and give them weapons is to defend our country. That is their JOB, no one held a gun to their heads and forced them. Hello Liberals!!!! Why don't you just invite the Iranian president over and put him in the white house, that would bring peace on all fronts Hmmmm? Put Obama in and see if it doesn't happen. The Japanese had diplomats here in the country at the same time they where dropping bombs on Pearl Harbor. Can you not see that the anti war sentiment that lett world war 2 get going, is the same now as then. If you don't wake up now, you will find you won't be able to wake up at all. We will all be dead from stupidity. Yes, I want someone in the white house that knows more about the world than doing community service. someone who went to school to learn to fight, and not just in court. I am a member of The Salvation Army. Let our country continue to fight for freedom and I will support it. Let the candidates put their hands on a Bible and "know" what is written inside it. I want to vote for them. I have sat out voting a few years, but not this time. McCain/Palin YOU have my vote

Obama said "It's not about me it's about you"
Mccain said "It's about you and serving you".
DRILL BABY DRILL...why doesn't he say that it will be at LEAST 7 YEARS before any of that oil reaches the consumer? what do we do until then? I know invade IRAN...or maybe Russia.

To "danny", #74, that is a total lie. Check "factcheck.org". That story has been checked and rechecked for months now. IT IS TOTALLY UNTRUE

When McCain talks about “winning” the Iraq war I get confused. In order to win a war all you have to do is kill so many Iraqis that the other ones surrender. We’re really good at killing people. That should not be a problem. The trouble with the “war of terror” is we’re having trouble finding the people we want to kill. Because it’s a police action not a war!

BTW, I stumble a clash yesterday and overlook to post it but anyway this clash video is entitled Obama v. McCain on Iraq & Afghanistan. US Presidential candidates have clashed sharply in recent days on Iraq, Afghanistan and the War on Terror. Watch both two statements, who do you think or believed is right?

You couldn't get a job at McDonalds and become district manager after 143 days of experience.
You couldn't become chief of surgery after 143 days of experience of being a surgeon.
You couldn't get a job as a teacher and be the superintendent after 143 days of experience.
You couldn't join the military and become a colonel after a 143 days of experience.
You couldn't get a job as a reporter and become the nightly news anchor after 143 days of experience.
BUT....

'From the time Barack Obama was sworn in as a United State Senator, to the time he announced he was forming a Presidential exploratory committee, he logged 143 days of experience in the Senate.
That's how many days the Senate was actually in session and working.
After 143 days of work experience, Obama believed he was ready to be Commander In Chief, Leader of the Free World, and fill the shoes of Abraham Lincoln, FDR, JFK and Ronald Reagan. 143 days?
We all have to start somewhere. The senate is a good start, but after 143 days, that's all it is - a start.

AND, strangely, a large sector of the American public seems to feel comfortable with this and campaigning for him.

We wouldn't accept this in our own line of work, yet some are OK with this for the President of the United States of America?

Come on folks, we are not voting for the next American Idol.

Is he talking about his Depends?

Yeah I'm sure all the powers to be in the Republican party are supporting him so he can "change" them. The guy that voted with Bush 90% of them time is all about "change".

And I'm sure after his vitriol filled hatefest of a convention he is going to end "partisan rancor"

Hes a uniter, not a divider, just like his mentor Bush!

It is all said and done. OBAMA IS ELECTED PRESIDENT! John McCain ran a good campaign. After the dust has settled, McCain shows great sportsmanship. John has also mentioned his wonderful speech to the people(both democrats and republicans) insisting that we forget about the past and move on. He lost the election but still loves this country, as he is still determined to help strengthen this country we call not just the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, but home as well. He is still one of the great Patriots of this country, and we have to be thankful for that. Now, lets just acknowledge what we have experienced on the 4th of November, 2008 at 11 PM. A new president is elected. We have to look to the future and do our duties as Americans in order to allow Barack Obama and his cabinet to do theirs. This will, as we can expect, will result in sacrifices. Obama once said,"This(his presidential plans) isn't going to happen over night...it will take baby steps" indicating that times will be tough, but we can answer. WE WILL ANSWER.
