Clinton backers move toward Obama

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor September 2, 2008 10:41 AM

Hillary Clinton's impassioned pleas at the Democratic convention for her supporters to unite behind Barack Obama appear to have worked.

A new Gallup poll out today says that the percentage of Clinton loyalists planning to vote for Obama in November jumped from 70 percent before last week's convention to 81 percent after, and the percentage saying they are certain to back Obama increased from 47 percent to 65 percent.

The Gallup survey is among several suggesting that Obama did get a bump in support coming out of the convention, which received wall-to-wall media coverage, including his acceptance speech Thursday night that drew more than 40 million TV viewers.

A Hotline/Diageo poll out this morning gives Obama a 48 percent to 39 percent national lead over Republican John McCain, up from 44 percent to 40 percent in the previous poll. And a USA Today/Gallup survey released on Monday gave Obama a 50 percent to 43 percent lead, up from a 4-percentage-point edge before the convention.

  1. With most of the Gulf escaping catastrophe and the RNC planning a full slate of convention activities, these latest poll results may signal that a calm has settled over the land. And normalcy returns....

  1. They were going to Obama anyway. It's cruel, what Clinton did to those supporters. Just cruel.

  1. where else were they going? sit out the election? No ! vote for McCain/Palin? Be serious. I felt their pain but I had no fear that the pain would subside and Senator Obama would get their support.

  1. I would never vote for Obama. I was a Hillary Clinton supporter. I was going to vote for McCain anyway. Putting Sarah Palin on the ticket makes it easier. You guys don't get it. This is about the DNC and how they handled the primary. It was disgusting. I was raised by a father who was a WWII veteran and patriotism was the cornerstone of our household. I find that is missing.

  1. So Hillary's people will vote for Obama even if it is bad for the country. Remember this when you God Obama is struck down. Those who try to put themselves on that level, have the greatest fall and severest penalty.
    X-Dem for life.

  1. Bump or no bump....it will be a bumpy road for America if Obama is elected. I think his promises sound good to the ear, but will lead us to a socialistic society. That is never what America was intended for.

  1. Meanwhile, McCain continues to display his utter recklessness and disregard for our national security by selecting a vice president candidate who governed the least populous state in the union for 18 months and was the mayor of a backwoods town of 9,000 for a decade before that. Therefore, in McCain's judgement, she is fit to be president in the case the 72 year old McCain is ever incapacitated while in office.

Her other credentials include: hunting, runner-up beauty queen, snowmobiling, and a bachelors degree in journalism from an Idaho state university.

Once again, McCain's senility and experience of being wrong, rears its ugly head.

Get real I won't vote for that hack

  1. I'm awfully glad that the people who supported Clinton are coming around. I voted for her myself but I'm much happier voting for a person who shares thje great majority of her positions than one who has often voted the opposite of Clinton. I can't see how Palin can appease Clinton supporters--she is the opposite of Clinton on positions and in the level of experience.

  1. I respect anyone who goes into public service. I believe that Gov. Palin has climbed the ladder and she was elected one vote at a time and deserves her due. I believe that her family issues are off limits (they don't included adultery or emblezzlement).
I am much more concerned with the top of the ticket and his thought process and his brash/rash decision making process. We have already had a Pres. who's agenda for the USA is determined by his personal agenda and we certainly don't need another one.
I have watch Sen. Obama with hands on experience work with a staff that has grown considerable and a budget that appears to have been managed very well.
I am only one vote in one state MD that is prodominately DEM so I know my vote will count.
I can only hope that as these campaigns come to a close that we take off the partisan hats an choose to put on an American hat. We will never agree on all the issues, but I am hopeful that we choose the candiate that is willing to listen to both side and look for middle ground and work out a compromise one issue at a time.
Sen. McCain has not shown me that he is not proactive but reactive and is more emotional and less thoughtful and reflective and able to look at a big picture. He is also really good with short sentences that are nothing more than sound bites.
I can't change anyone's mind I just hope and PRAY there are more people who think like me than agree with Sen. McCain.

  1. Eva, I don't buy it...I have never voted in a general election where my 'first pick' was on the ticket, but I supported the democrat who won the nomination because the alternative, electing yet another republican is not an option. Do you realize that three supreme court justices will be replaced, probably within the first term of the new POTUS. McCain has already gone on record supporting Alito and his neo-con buddies, is that really what you want? Or are you just another Republican troll faking your 'outrage' thinking it will actually influence a real democrat to vote against their principles and the best interests of this country in order to 'get even' for Hillary not winning? Get real...

  1. How could anyone in their right minds think that McCain (couldn’t even run his own campaign well, divorced is wife after she was in a accident for a much younger blonde, himself claims to be "older than dust", and "not knowing economics") and Palin (can't run her own Family, has little education, was part of party whose key agenda was independence for Alaska from rest of US) could be good for America?

Posted by futureguy September 2, 08 12:01 PM
  1. So much emotion so little fact in these comments. Your party represents your views on social and economic issues. If you supported Hillary then how does McCain uphold your priorities. Stem cell research, Roe Vs. Wade, Welfare/Reform, Creationism in schools, Iraq withdrawal, campaign finance reform; These are the issues. It isn't about hurt feelings. The nomination processes is tough for a reason. We have the strongest candidate overall.

  1. How can country first McCain pick

    1) A recent member of the Alaska Independence Party and
    2) Someone who said we're in Iraq for access to natural resources

to be his VP pick? I'm offended

Can you believe Obama turned down the offer to run as Hillary's vice president?
He could have actually rceived the experience he lacks. Just another loser Democrat.

  1. Eve apparently thinks that 4-8 more years of the Bush administration would be fine. You really think that the McBush adminsitration (which will be exactly the same as the past 8 years) would be more similar to what Hillary would have given you than what Obama could be giving you? Come on! Get with the program. It's bitter people like you that will endanger the future of the U.S.

McBush will be starting quite a few new fights, just look at how he reacted when his wife told him his hair was starting to thin. Imagine what he'll do when Iran refuses to cave in with sanctions. He's not a leader, he's an angry old man.

  1. How we know Obama is bad for the country , or how we know Mc Cain will do any good or any different than G W Bush in my opinion Obama has been right from the biginning about Iraq. Both Obama and Mcain will have to do better and speak clear on how they will solve the economy crisis and make the USA less oil dependant

  1. The DNC did not do anything to HRC. This was a campaign. People do and say things to make themselves look good and their opponent look bad. HRC was equally as aggressive as BO. He never once tried to assassinate her character. Can we say the same about her? I think that race plays a big issue here. A lot of people are upset because a black male beat out a white female. In all fairness, BO did win fair and square.
America, can you really see us being lead by an African-American male? I can, but I know that some of us have issues with this. For the record, what we see on TV does not accurately portray African-American males. We are educated, successful, business men, and business owners as well.

  1. Eva,

I am a OIF, OEF veteran, and John McCain has voted numerous times against me... He voted no for the New GI Bill, and for a ton of other funding issues for veterans. To insinuate that Obama is NOT patriotic, is ridiculous.

Sarah Palin had her baby with downs sindrome, sure... However, that was HER choice. It should be a CHOICE for every mother that comes into that difficult decision, not the governments. The reason Hillary backers are coming back, is first, McCain is totally patronizing, thinking selecting a woman based on her anatomy will get Hillary votes when Calin is NO Hillary, and because she is wrong on all the issues... What if YOUR daughter was pregnant because of a rape or incest? I know that if it happened to my daughter, I would want her to have a CHOICE of what she could do. With McCain and Palin, they will overturn Roe vs. Wade, and make abortion Illegal.

A long time ago, my aunt was raped and became pregnant. It was against the law in that time to get an abortion, so she went to a back alley surgeon in a dirty hotel room, and had the worst experience of her life... Just think about it, and stop this DNC screwed up crap.

Posted by daniel September 2, 08 12:21 PM
  1. So Eva, you're going to vote for McCain to spite the DNC? Talk about cutting off your nose... McCain is the antithesis of everything Hillary stands for... I guess you're more concerned with voting for woman than the future of this country. And for the record, I think Hillary would have made a fine President, McCain, is 4 MORE YEARS OF BUSH!!!

  1. It is funny, news like this is called news. The reason for this article is out here is trying to tell the regular forks that "Look! Obama will charm down everyone eventually, he is getting there. Look at the trend!!! Watch out the wind!" and Blar Blar or Be liar. However, quite a lot Hillary supporters just do not care whatever they are saying... Because, they made the conclusion of "OB is not electable" is not based on the emotion. It is based on the charater of the candidate is conflicting with the ideal person for the job. I seriously donot care if the candidate is black or pink or a male or female as long as he or she could deliver the great effort and get our country back on track. So far, Obama's records and characters failed the test.

  1. I don't understand Eva's post, #4. Sarah Palin does not believe in anything that Hilary does. Are you voting for her because she is a woman? Is that why you supported Hilary>>

  1. The only way I can see Hillary supporters voting for McCain is if they were only voting for her because she is a woman. Shame on you. Her credentials and experience are what she was trying to sell us, not her womanhood. If, now that McCain picks a little known woman with five children causes you to want to vote for them, do the rest of us a favor and don't vote. You are not taking this privilege seriously. You couldn't be. Take time, read about all the candidates, their records, and their plans for our future. Try reading and listening to more than one news source in an attempt to find the truth. Voting for anyone based on Waaa waaa my candidate didn't win, or look another woman to vote for, is a disgrace to all those who have gone before us. If you want to honor the fallen, take the time to do your homework and if you can't do that, don't bother to vote. These people have our future in their hands.

WOW what a crybaby. The DNC set rules before starting the PRIMARIES. Both candidates followed the rules, why couldn't the two states in question? Hillary lost fairly, and now supports Obama.

You are voting against the DNC and your own VALUES because you think the DNC was unfair. THEY MAKE THE RULES. You are the one being unfair.

You sound like a spoiled brat who drops your Ice Cream Cone only to knock down your friends ice cream cone so she feels as bad as you.

  1. Anyone who claims to be a Clinton supporter that says they'll now vote for McSame is either a republical plant (at least half the votes for Clinton in the primaries came from republicals trying to influence the General Election), intellectually challenged (McSame's policies and those of Senator Clinton's are 180 degree opposites), a sexist (no other term for someone who votes for a candidate soley on the basis of their gender), or is just plain not telling the truth...

    Period.

  1. Its too early in the day, ye Republicans posing as disaffected Hillary supporters, to botch up the historical narrative. To those who claim that the democrat party "chose obama" over hillary, please try to remember actual facts. It might help, i mean it was only a few months ago. For most of the primaries, Obama had the lead in delegates, and Hillary maintained a stubborn lead in superdelegates. Now tell me, which of those two represents Voting Americans, and which represents The Party? As for florida and michigan, Clinton signed off on the decision to strip their votes, so as much as she is part of the party, she plotted against herself too. Given the system the party has, which may i remind you, yielded 8 years of President Clinton, Obama received more votes. I heard Sen. Clinton's speech at the DNC and it was strong and beautiful and difficult to hear. It made me proud to be a woman. Our day will come. But it certainly will not be on the shoulders of Sarah Palin.

  1. That glass ceiling that Obama and several of you dismiss, is actually very important to a lot of women. When I was 18, women earned 59 cents for every dollar a man earned; nearly 30 years later, its all the way up to 67 cents. Eight cents is not enough. Minimizing this issue doesn't change the fact that women had to boycott the Democrats (they were the workers) for two presidential elections before they won the right to vote in 1920. Voting for the other party is the tactic that works. Women are different than men, and I might think a different perspective will make a difference. I believe HRC refered to it as a "sea change".

In addition to this Barack Obama is no Hillary Clinton. He is not qualified, in my opinion. He doesn't get it, and he is all about Barack Obama. I won't vote for him even if the polls say I will. HRC has to do what she has to do. I thought "Barackoplolis" was shameful.

  1. Addressing "Eva's" Comments regarding Hillary supporters voting/not voting for Obama. Eva I have to question with how much passion you "supported" Hillary prior to the DNC machinations - the logic in your post doesn't add up. You said you were going to vote for McCain anyway and putting Palin on the ticket "only makes it easier" and the rest of us "don't get it". Question - what aspect or aspects of Hillary's positions had you supporting her in the first place? Palin is the polar opposite of Hillary on all positions, across the board and your mention of Patriotism lacking ... there are indeed other forms of Patriotism than ONLY having served or not served in the military. All you had to do was listen to Obama's convention speech and any questions or issues anyone had with his "Patriotism" would have been washed away. I don't believe you were a true Hillary supporter and if so, you're letting your disappointment cloud your judgment.

  1. Any former Hillary Clinton supporter that is now saying that they are going to vote for McCain is either being dishonest, or they really just don't vote on the issues that the country faces. Hillary and Obama are very close on all of the major issues, and they are both miles away from the direction that McCain wants to keep the country going in.

  1. How can any intelligent person even consider voting for McCain/Palin??? The party that brought you G.W.Bush and friends are the proud sponsors of:
    1) a country with no standing in the world
    2) an economy in the gutter
    3) higher unemployment
    4) paying for the war in Iraq when the Iraq government can afford to pay better than we can
    5) foreclosures
    6) etc, etc, etc
This country cannot afford four more years of this insanity.

  1. Some people are clueless about the issues and only care about personalities. People who use their brains are those who try to understand the issues, and how politicians talk about their positions on those issues. There is NO way that someone with a functioning brain who supported Hillary Clinton's stand on the issues could now vote for McCain. Only a voter who never understood Hillary's positions on the issues could now claim to be a McCain/Palin supporter [unless they are a closet racist -- another unfortunate possibility]. It is just as ludicrous as someone claiming to be for Romney and then deciding they support Biden. My fellow citizens are so uninformed -- it's amazing and embarrassing as well.

I have voted and done work on every election going back 22 years for the democrats and will not for this ticket. I have the choice and I will not support someone I believe will do more harm than good. I am not saying I will vote for McCain but more likely I will not vote for the first time in my life. I can not believe the other post do not think there has been sexism and bias in the media. Even this morning on the Today show the drilling that was given by Meridith Veria to the head of the RNC was disgusting over the pregnancy of Palen's daughter and that she was on her way out there to investigate it. 1. A vote for McCain is a vote against Hilary and what she is / was fighting for. A vote for Obama at least will accomplish some of what she was working towards. McCain's VP choice is baffling, my only conclusion is that he must have done it to try and get Hilary supporters to vote for him because he has a woman on the ticket. If he thought Hilary supporters were only interested because she's a woman rather than in her ideas and extensive experience he's mistaken. The worst thing we could do is put McCain in office with his inexperienced VP.

Additionally, do you seriously think that anyone that is voting for Mccain Palin (or whatever the ticket will morph into by December) would have seriously supported Hillary? 1. Mccain's pick for VP is a direct attack on Hillary Clinton supporters. McCain must really think her supporters will support Palin then he is so far off reality. Hillary is a much greater leader and for mccain to pick a female VP just so he could get votes is sexist and a dumb move. Palin is no Hillary.

I too am a Vet (female) of the USMC. My husband is a retired Marine. All of our five brothers and sisters are also veterans. That is SEVEN Vets in this generation.

I submit to you my service, as is theirs, along with countless other Vets, IS JUST AS VALUABLE AS MCCAINS! I assure you, there is nothing unpatriotic about Obama or the DNC.

The donations coming from the troops Overseas to Obama leads donations to MCCain by about 2/3. They know they are not getting a fair shake in this war and are today's Patriots.

I hope you will reconsider your Vote for MCCain.

You also need to understand the dissapointment of the Hillary backers. So close, but Palin is everything Hillary is not. Palin misled the American people from the git go about her Bridge (she campaigned on it!). She and MCCain are in this for themselves, NOT country.

    We are voting with Obama.

    2. does not want equal pay for women
    3. doesn't believe a woman should be able to decide what she does with her body
    4. picks a woman vp because he thinks WE are not smart enough to decide on the issues.

  1. McCain is so reckless, he is like Bush on steroids, leaps before he looks, makes horriffic anti-woman jokes (eg. that one about Chelsea Clinton was beyond the Palin) and he just does not get the most fundamental thing about keeping your friends close and your enemies closer.

In McCain's world it will all be one BIG surprise if some country attacks the US again. He is from the cold-war era and is bound to bring America to its knees economically and politically in the eyes of the rest of the world.

Obama give America a leader who recognizes the advantages and diversity of an interdependent society and world, not from a socialistic perspective but from a global preservationist's view. People, the environment and a better world. Why not?

  1. Hillary Clinton will not be the first female president if Sarah Palin becomes the VP. Incumbents are almost always elected to the Presidency. Palin's supports big oil companies, doesn't believe fossil fuels contribute to global warming, does not believe women should be allowed to control their own bodies and has executive experience because she sold the former governor's plane on Ebay. This is like supporting Chauncey Gardner, God help us.

  1. I am a former Clinton supporter who will now vote for McCain. I think those polls are quite slanted. Obama will not make change, he will continue to be the downfall of this country and the democratic party. McCain has the right message: Stop sending billions of dollars in aid to foreign countries that don't like us to begin with, drill for oil in our own backyard, and help people get the training they need to get better jobs. Those of you that don't want to drill, exactly how much longer would you like to depend on the rest of the world to keep us going ? You vote for Obama and you are voting to increase taxes. When will some of you actually wake up and understand the real issues that affect each of us instead of being taken in by a Martin Luther King speech impersonator?
