Elizabeth Edwards breaks silence
Elizabeth Edwards has given her first interview about her husband's infidelity, saying that the affair pushed her to focus on her children and on healthcare reform.
"There's a lot of adjustment to make," she told the Detroit Free Press in an interview published today. "When you mention trust, that's probably the most difficult hurdle."
Asked whether she has forgiven her husband, Edwards replied: "I don't want to feed the monster, if you don't mind."
John Edwards, the Democratic vice presidential nominee in 2004 and a presidential candidate this year, acknowledged last month that he had an affair with a woman who made videos for his campaign and repeatedly lied about it.
Elizabeth Edwards, 59, had only issued a brief statement asking for privacy and saying that her husband confessed the affair to her in 2006.
Edwards, who is being treated for breast cancer, also said she wants her children -- Cate, 26, Emma Claire, 10, and Jack, 8 -- to see their father as "an advocate for poverty" and not have "this current picture of him to be the only one they carry with them, as young people and as adults."
She plans an Oct. 15 speech in Detroit about coping with life's setbacks, including her cancer and the death of a teenage son in a car wreck. The couple have cancelled a series of appearances, including one at Salem State College.

Elizabeth Edwards is such a gracious lady. Let's please leave this woman alone. She, and her children, deserve their privacy. I hope she can beat this cancer she has dealt with over the past few years. She is in an inspiration to all women who have fought this tought fight!
I feel Ms. Edwards has been more than gracious in discussing her husband's infidelity. I think it is time for the press and public to back away from the Edwards family and let them handle this in private.
Very Brave woman God bless
She knows her time is short so right now she is concentrating on what she leaves behind her - children who will be OK and a family with positive values. Her husband did something really stupid and venal but useful in that it stripped away his false face and revealed he is not special - the voters should be glad that his true character was revealed. He certainly fooled me.
While she lives let her bear witness to her life through her actions. When she is gone let that life be her memorial.
That's all very well and nice but the kids will only see their father as a cheater to them and their mother.
Should a 59 year old woman have an 8 year old kid? I know they're rich and they've had their share of tragedies but people need to deal with reality and the gov't and it's hacks refuse to do that. I think we're all doomed.
Let's be honest . . . She kept her silence due to the fact she wanted to be the first lady.
Yes, she was hurt by the affair, and that's something that is to be expected. She's married to a downright jerk. But Elizabeth Edwards, before her cancer, comes across as a rude, overbearing, woman, who is overly ambitious. While I wish her all the best in her fight against cancer - I've seen too many people I care about fighting it - I think she's a horrible actress.
Elizabeth knew about the affair but hid it along with John to mislead the American Public. She just wanted him to be elected, even if there were lies being hidden. I cannot respect this. And for both of them to pretend the baby is not his, that's criminal to the Lord. Shame on them both. The baby shuttles around the globe, has not father listed on her birth certificate, while Edwards' other children live like the rich kids they are. Doesn't make sense to me. In fact this makes me realize John Edwards would deny and harm his own child for politics.
I do wish Elizabeth well in her fight against cancer, but her husband harmed her more than anything or anyone.
Both she and John kept silent so as not to throw Edwards' supporters toward Senator Hillary Clinton. And the Press held back too. The Press knew about this back in November 2007, but refused to report it. Had John Edwards been out before Iowa, Senator Clinton would be the Democratic nominee and electorate would have real hope for real change we need in this country. This is just one more sleazy thing that happened during the primaries and we're about to pay dearly for it in November when the Democrats lose the White House once again.
I guess everyone in this world are saints... Give me a break. His affair and how he and Elizabeth deal with it is no one elses business but theirs. Not the media, and not the public. Elizabeth owes no one an explanation. Sorry she finally spoke. As someone who has been cheated on by a husband it is a very private matter whether you are in public office or not. Bill Clinton was still a good President regardless of his personal life.
John McCain chose Sarah Palin as VP just to sleep with her. That is a worse scandal to put an unqualified bimbo so close to being President.
On one hand, one feels very sorry for Elizabeth Edwards for all that she has suffered. On the other one wonders, why did she actively support her husband for his quest for presidency and drag numerous innocent volunteers who believed in his candidacy. What, if he was nominated and then the affair had come to light. I fully understand that no one is perfect, but this is going a bit too far.
I can not believe the stupidity and ignorance of some of the comments like M.T. Fisher. Elizabeth is a great lady who has shown compassion for many others and has been a strong advocate for health care. There are so many people who can only criticize without doing anything meaningful in their own lives.
John McCain cheated on his first wife with his current wife among many others such as military insubordinates. The mainstream media doesn't touch that story but dropout Edwards gets all the news.
An "advocate for poverty?" Well, he certainly is a POOR excuse for a man!
What, too soon?
Private matter that they only need to deal with, and it doesn't matter what we think about it, it's whats important to them. On another note, what's a guy to do when his primal urges are knocking on the door. It was better than paying a hooker.
Hm. I wonder how brave and gracious everybody would think she was, and whether people would be crying that the media should allow them their privacy if John Edwards was a Republican. Hm, prolly not.
I agree that this should be a private issue, and the press/media should back off just like they have the Palin family...oh, my bad.
(This comment is about the media's lack of respect for personal space, not directed towards the Edward's family. The Edwards family is human like the rest of us and I wish Elizabeth the best and quick recovery.)
If you threw every politician who has had an extramarital affair out of office, Washington DC and every state capital would be ghost towns. You'd hear nothing but the sound of the crickets chirping in the bushes.
Wait a minute! What a great idea!
I still think John Edwards would have been a great choice for the VP. All we ask from him is to tell the truth. I certainly do no want to sacrifice a leader like Edwards just because of what he did in his personal life. He should acknowledge what he did and get back in the politics and bring the change that everyone wants.
"John McCain chose Sarah Palin as VP just to sleep with her. That is a worse scandal to put an unqualified bimbo so close to being President."
Really, there is a spill in aisle 4 that needs to be mopped up. Get back to work you imbecile. Don't forget your apron. And next time lock up your bicycle in the warehouse when you ride it to work. Moron.
What a gracious woman! My hat goes off to Elizabeth. She acts like she has read the book What If Everyone Lived Next Door to JESUS? (Hannibal Books). We need more like her in this corrupted, confused world. May God bless her and give her peace.
john mccain did the same thing . his wife was sick he left her for wife he got now
I would concur that her husband is an "advocate for poverty". He has managed to make a great number of middle and lower middle class folks reach that lofty goal of poverty through his insidious law suits. His law practice, while making a comfortable living for him, has managed to effectively raise the cost of health care. Now, I'm not blaming him for all the absurd costs regarding health care, but if you're diligent in your research you'll find his trials against doctors and hospitals have certainly made dealing with the healthcare industry a lot more expensive than it need be.
She knew about it in 2006 yet she stood by her man when he wanted the presidency. She would have continued to hide it if it meant being First Lady, Hypocrit. I don't feel a bit bad for her .
I think the public should respect how they chose to deal with this infidelity matter.
With respect to her illness, she has to concerned with self preservation . How she confronted this matter reveals the best that she could do at that time. I hope she
beats the cancer and her children remain loving and supportive to their mother.
Elizabeth is one classy lady; clearly her motivations in all this are to take care of her health and her children the best she can with the time she has left. Some of you guys dissing her are just nut jobs. You act like she should contacted the news agencies and told on her husband. remember, she was not the guilty party, she was the victim.
As for Palin, she is the one who exposed her family to scrutiny, telling the media about their problems, parading them out on stage. Was she so naive that she didn't know what would happen? Kind of hard to feel sorry for her. Bristol is the one who should get the sympathy.
So, Kevin -- a 59 year old woman is too old to have an eight year old, but it's nobody's business if the Republican's VP nominee breeds a skank? I am sick of two-faced Republican hypocrites.
If he were a republican no one would have dropped a dime on him.
Yeah he blew it - screwed up - whatever - its between them.
I think McCaine has just as bad of a record. Oh but wait he's republican that's OK.
If Edwards were running he would still have my vote because of his policies.
I feel for Mrs. Edwards, she's married to a real phony cheat. However, the fact is that she was party to a cover up. I'm not sure why, maybe because she wanted to be first lady, or maybe for other reasons. I would not be proud of myself, if I was Elizabeth Edwards. Once again, it seems to be all about money and/or power (or both).
Someday I'd like to be able to forgive John Edwards for treating his wife so shabbily, but, "I'm just not THERE yet."
Because I know something about English literature (and know enough about American politics to be a Republican—though that doesn’t matter right now), I am interested to see that Elizabeth Edwards knows Shakespeare’s OTHELLO and is obviously alluding to it when she says “I don’t want to feed the monster.”
In OTHELLO, the villain Iago is trying to inflame Othello’s angry possessiveness (which is the definition of the word “jealousy” in this Shakespearean context) of his wife, Desdemona, by leading him to believe that she has been unfaithful to him. (Othello is a black man, a military commander in a white society; Desdemona is a white woman.)
By referring to this key passage in OTHELLO, Elizabeth is—I believe—describing the torment that she herself has endured because of her husband’s infidelity and that she does not want to intensify in herself at this point. The “monster” jealously will eat you alive if you let it:
O, beware, my lord, of jealousy;
It is the green-eyed monster which doth mock
The meat it feeds on; that cuckold lives in bliss
Who, certain of his fate, loves not his wronger;
But, O, what damned minutes tells he o'er
Who dotes, yet doubts, suspects, yet strongly loves!
McCain/Edwards First Wives club: What happened to John McCain's first wife? Crippled and disfigured by an automobile accident, John McCain trashed his marital vows, divorced his first wife, and barely one month later marries a millionaire, bleached blond, heiress 20 years his junior. And this from a man of honor? John McCain divorced because he was a great man, and she was a lesser woman. Is that how John McCain sees all women? Lesser, expendable, divorceable? Can he be excused because he is a "great man" and because his wife, thanks to the accident was a "lesser woman". Perhaps John McCain sees women as expendable & divorceable, and his own actions therefore forgiveable, and perhaps he can move on, leaving the wreckage of a broken woman's broken life. Perhaps this leaves him "free" to marry another woman 20 years his junior, barely one month later. At least, John Edwards has the courage to admit his transgressions and stay in his marriage.
bcblue84 - Your assuming the Edwards are staying in their marriage. I believe Elizabeth has said what she does now is for her children - that doesn't mean there won't be a divorce coming down the road. She said she doesn't want to feed the monster - the media frenzy. I think in NC it takes at least a year before a divorce would be finalized and at that point it would be public knowledge.
To Austin Suzie:
HOW SHAMELESS! This is exactly why Hillary Clinton is NOT the nominee. It is another "Clintonite" non sequitor to argue that if the Edwards' had revealed his affair, she would have won Iowa and been the Democratic Candidate. What a joke!!!
You people are amazing. And your lack of logic only reveals the level of your denial.
P.S. If the Democrats lose, it will only be because you people WON'T unify behind Obama . . . so don't even go there.
To Elizabeth and John both: Wishing you peace! I am very sorry that people feel so compelled to give their thoughts on your life choices and mistakes.
I truly wish it were different for you and your family at what is clearly a trying period of time in your life. I appreciate you both and know that we are in need of you in politics..... so please if you can continue on and keep up the good work you have set out to do... What others say about you is none of your concern and more telling of them and their character than you or your actions.
Wishing you only good things!
JW.
All Liberals are Losers - Easy as that
Lance you are mistaken. Austin Suzie is right on the money.
It's the Hillary supporters doing all the WORK for Obama right now. The kids show up for the free concerts---but they don't post signs and encourage peopel to register. It's the Hillary pelople working their hearts out. What have you done, Lance?
Hillary would have won had not Edwards and Obama teamed up against her (among other examples== to diss her 'tearing' moment in New Hampshire. (Gee maybe what was the REAL reason NH women backed Hillary was the crazed middle aged white guy trying to blow up a Hillary HQ there?).
As a person who traveled to work for Edwards in NH--I am INCENSED that Elizabeth went along on this charade.
We're all dying.
Get over it.
AND IF OBAMA LOSES IT WILL BE BECAUSE HE PUSHED HIMSELF HERE 6 YEARS TOO EARLY (we need more mcstrokes and mcheart attacks before that is going to happen, I fear.
After reading the many hateful comments written here about,
Senator John Edwards, I realize that, unlike Senator John Edwards,
many of you cannot grasp the depth to which human love is possble.
