Full crisis mode
Democrats are trying to draw a contrast between what they call Barack Obama's nonpartisan, level-headed response to the Wall Street crisis and John McCain's partisan, hot-headed reaction.
The Democratic National Committee unveiled a web video this afternoon that shows Obama saying statesmanlike things such as "I have outlined plans that would have helped prevent the problems that we face" and "we cannot only have a plan for Wall Street, we must also help Main Street," followed by positive slogans such as "real leadership," "real ideas," and "thinking big" appearing on screen.
Those alternate with shots of McCain saying things like, "Senator Obama did nothing, and actually profited from this system of abuse and scandal" and "While Fannie and Freddie were working to keep Congress away from their house of cards, Senator Obama was taking their money," followed by slogans such as "false attacks," "just more political attacks," and "now he's just lying" on screen.
The video, however, leaves out that Obama's speeches this week where he has aggressively gone after McCain on his record supporting deregulation, has called him out of touch for saying that the "fundamentals" of the economy are strong, and just today assailed him on Social Security.
And for their part, Republicans criticized Obama for sending a fund-raising appeal today that referred to the economic turmoil.
"This week, we saw the stark differences between Barack Obama and John McCain on the economy. With Wall Street in crisis and families struggling, Barack offered a solid plan to strengthen the middle class, including tax cuts for nearly all Americans. John McCain continued the same old politics -- lying about Barack's plan and offering more of the same George Bush policies, including more tax breaks for Big Oil and no solutions for working families. It's time for that kind of politics to change. And thanks to supporters like you, our movement has grown by more than 50,000 new donors this week. Now we're within reach of a new goal -- 100,000 new donors by midnight tonight," Obama campaign manager David Plouffe wrote.
Alex Conant, a Republican National Committee spokesman, said in a statement, “Today, Barack Obama sent out a fundraising email for his campaign invoking the crisis on Wall Street. This is the definition of political opportunism – not leadership. It raises serious questions about Obama’s judgment when millions of Americans are losing their jobs and savings, and his response is to ask for a campaign contribution. It’s bad enough that Obama already took more money from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac than anyone but the chairman of the committee they answer to. The crisis on Wall Street should be a bipartisan call for government reform – not a selfish call for political contributions.”
Democrats quickly pointed out that McCain had sent out emails to supporters that urge them to watch the upcoming debate, volunteer, and donate, and include links to news stories about McCain's response to the crisis.
But the McCain emails are not as direct an appeal.
"The RNC can throw stones from one of John McCain seven houses if it wants but the fact is McCain showed today that is more interested in throwing cheap and false political attacks than in offering real solutions to the economic challenges facing working families," Damien LaVera, spokesman for the Democratic National Committee, said in a statement.

Contributing to Obama is an investment in my future.
Full crisis mode for the voters. Since either the FED or USG or American People are supposed to be the controlling owners of AIG, any chance we can insure against either of these boneheads destroying our American dreams? Why should taxpayers not even be included on voting or discussions as to whether they want to pay for mistakes made due to corporate greed or otherwise bad structuring to the housing and credit industries. No bailouts, for I say the American taxpayer is "too big to fail."
Maybe JFK was right to get off the Federal Reserve note. The bankers are still raking it in at our expense!!
Obama has shown time and time again that he has the intellect, temperament and leadership to be the next President.
All poor John can do is bash Obama, in the vain hope that everyone will forget that he has always been a champion of deregulating financial institutions - ALWAYS. He has never voted to increase governmental oversight of Wall Street or the bankers - NEVER.
But now he's on his high horse, claiming to be a man of the people, committed to correcting the problems brought about by his votes in the Senate, along with all the other Republicans.
So who are you going to believe?
Duh.
"If Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system, and the economy as a whole". - John McCain 5/26/06
Where was Obama? He was too busy taking money from the GSE's to support McCain's effort to prevent the Wall Street meltdown.
Do you want a president that recognized and worked to try and to prevent the problem or one that claims he can rescue us after he allowed it to happen?
McCain/Palin 2008
I was initially against a government bailout of AIG and the Wall Street banks. However, after really thinking it through, I realize that this will help to stabilize the real estate market. Home values should stop going down and that would be a plus for everyone. The mortgages that are in foreclosure or about to go into foreclosure need to be modified so that people can stay in their homes and have payments that they can afford. Wall Street banks must be strictly regulated so that greed doesn't get in the way of good judgment. People need to save their money for a down payment when buying a home. The 100% financing was ridiculous! We have all suffered - losing equity in our homes and all because of GREED!!
Marilyn Preston
All poor John can do is bash Obama, in the desperate hope that folks will forget he has championed DE-regulation of banks and Wall Street for his 26 years in Washington. He has never voted to increase governmental oversight - NEVER.
But now he's convinced he is the savior of the same people he has ignored for all his career in the Senate: the individual investor and beleaguered home-owner trying to stave off repossession.
Everyone knows that greed and corruption on Wall Street (and among investment bankers in general) contributed to this current crisis. Everyone knows that.
But that's what regulation and oversight are supposed to curtail - and John McCain has NEVER supported increased regulation or oversight.
He has, instead, been in so deep in the bankers' pockets that he's nearly suffocated on the lint while searching for the coin.
I'm glad McCain has finally seen the light. Pity he didn't earlier, when it would have done some good.
What up, RNC!
(cheers)
You white motherfuckers!
(laughter)
This conference so white, Helen Mirren tried to snort it!
(laughter)
Y’all the whitest white people in the history of white people. Even Barbara Bush sitting here right now going: ‘These are some white motherfuckers.’
(laughter)
You’re so white, your vice presidential nominee got the word ‘pale’ in her name!
(laughter, applause)
Look at this place. I can’t believe this shit! Y’all couldn’t find one single brother?
(shouting)
There is? Where?
(shouting)
Yo, what up, brother! Looks like you the only chocolate chip in the cookie.
(laughter)
You look like a fly in a glass of milk, yo. Swim! Swim for your life!
(laughter)
Alaska in the house!
(Cheers)
Where the baby daddy at? Where he at?
(crowd noise)
You knocked her up, man? That’s cool. That’s cool.
(silence)
You know that word ‘abstinence’—you know that mean ‘no fucking,’ right?
(laughter)
I guess they didn’t make that clear at the seminar.
(laughter)
‘So I just use this abstinence, that mean we can fuck all we want, right?’ No!
(laughter)
But you know I feel you, man. I do. Because the fact is, you live in motherfucking Alaska! What else is there to do but fuck?
(laughter)
Just fuck! That’s all there is to do! Just fuck!
(laughter)
That’s all Alaska is. Just a bunch of crazy white people fucking!
(sustained laughter and applause)
And you know he got to marry that girl, too. Because … her momma done shot a moose.
(laughter)
She shot a motherfucking moose! Put its head up on the wall and everything. That’s cold, man. That’s like Al Qaeda shit. Post that shit on the Internet as a warning to other moose.
(laughter)
’Cause when a girl’s momma shoot a moose, that’s, like, a red flag for me. I take that shit into consideration. I do! It’s like, ‘Yeah, you fine. No doubt. You real fine. And you got a great personality. And you drunk. But … ain’t your momma the one done shot a moose? I’ll be seeing you later on.’ I practice abstinence with moose-shooting-momma-having bitches.
(laughter)
But it’s time to bring out the white man you’ve all been waiting for. This man is so white, he makes y’all look Mexican.
(laughter)
He spent five long years locked up in a POW camp, and returned a national hero.
(applause)
And fucked every white woman in America.
(sustained applause)
’Cause five years—that makes you horny. And women, they looove to fuck war heroes. Basically, if you were white and female in 1973, you were fucked by John McCain.
(“USA! USA! USA!”)
And then he married a fine rich white girl whose daddy owned a beer company.
(laughter, applause)
And he wants to be president? Sheeet, you already got money, beer and pussy! What the fuck you want with the presidency? Quit while you’re ahead! You’re 72 years old—just drink, fuck, and play golf, you dumb white motherfucker!
(raucous laughter, applause)
Ladies and gentlemen, the next President of the United States of America, John McCain!
No way, no how, no McCain, No Palin, No more blood for oil, no more de-regulation, no more Republicans in the Whitehouse
Lady Lynn, your post was funny - but tasteless. Sure, John's an old white boy and his running mate is a young white woman with dubious credentials for the job, but there's little to be gained by cheap shots and, especially, vulgarity.
Especially when there's so much to criticize rationally.
Obama did not make a statment as to what he would do until 4 days later after the situation was stablize by Bush. Like the Georgia invasion, Obama hid for 4 days on vacation before he made a statment...Obama hides until he gets peopel to tell him what to say..and then it takes 4 days for him to memorize what they tell him. Pathetic
Bush had to admit what a TOTAL Disaster he's been on the Economy, and sounded like Whimpy saying, " I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today."
Bush also doesn't hold the country's purse strings, so he has to go along with the remedies CONGRESS insists on.
McCain seems to be beligerant squared and playing the Rovian game of trying to win the NEWS cycle with railing against Obama.
Obama is steady today answering questions and reasuring the Market...THAT'S LEADERSHIP.
IT MATTERS that you are in the top of your class in Harvard, not Daddy's alumni beneficiary to get your C+ average into YALE or your Daddy the admiral getting you into West Point when you rank 884th in a class of 890.
Here's Obama's answer to our debt problem in the United States.
Obama wants to spend $50 BILLION on a United Nations poverty program.
$50 BILLION $50 BILLION $50 BILLION
“Obama and Biden will embrace the Millennium Development Goal of cutting extreme poverty around the world in half by 2015, and they will double our foreign assistance to $50 billion to achieve that goal,” the candidates vow in their campaign platform.
Johns Hopkins professor Steve Hanke said such spending would merely drive up American debt, while doing almost nothing for the world’s poor.
“It goes down a bureaucratic rat-hole, lining the pockets of people who are connected to the power structure,” said Hanke, a senior fellow at the Cato Institute. “It’s basically a system to redistribute income from middle class people in the United States to rich people in poor countries. It never reaches those people who are living on a dollar a day.”
HAHHAHAHAHHAHAHA SOoo frikin funny!
How to find the crooks and the dishonests is by tracking its path to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac or the failing financial institution.Anyone can give a nice speech and sound convincing but the stain of manipulation and evidence of dirty affiliation with rich CEO's is all around and surrounding him.
Hey Dennis Berry,
Take a deep breath and pull yourself together; maybe open the window and let some of that hot air out of the house. In case you haven't heard, it's your man Obama who compromised himself by taking more money from the lobbyists of Freddie and Fannie than all the hundreds of senators and representatives in all of Washington, DC, except for Christopher Dodd who's barely hanging on to first place in the Freddie/Fannie fiasco. I think your man Obama is down for the count on this one. He already has too much smelly baggage for David Axelrod to pull his smoking behind out of the fire ... again. Oh, did I mention the Rainey connection with the Obama campaign? Just think; if Obama had been president, he would have had a Freddie/Fannie man in his elitist cabinet. Oh well.
== McCAIN * PALIN 08==
McCain is a fool. He’s not just out of touch with our economy, global politics and simple geography. He is out of touch with reality. He thinks that we forgot he is for deregulation. He thinks that we forgot that he is deep into the culture of greed and corruption. How anyone could vote for someone so damaged is beyond me.
Kind of pathetic, that John McCain. The contrast couldn't be clearer.
He is now desperate, and is using Lee Atwater / Karl Rove / Steve Schmidt tactics of outright lies and horrible smears.
These folks know that you can tell the Big Lie, because by the time the media catches up with it, the damage has been done with the general voting public.
It is indisputable that McCain's campaign's top tier of advisers are 80% lobbyists or former lobbyists. Change much?
McCain is desperate, and is now despicable. He is truly Bush & Cheney's third term.
Republicans prove once again that unless you donate $1,000,000.00 each and every year to tne RNC, they do not care about you at all. For all W's claims to putting the "America First" all one has to do is follow the money trail. Never in the recorded history of this country including before, during and after the depression or either Word War have we ever bailed out the banking industry like the current administration has. AIG is nothing more than an insurance company with very little stake in and thereby interest in the United States economy. Now China is buying as many troubled financial institrtions as they can in what can only be described as a freaking firesale and a huge financial for many years to come. Now Snow and McCain want to more of the same!
Why would America REWARD complete Republican failure ?
We wont.
I don't like what the new John McCain has become. His continuous lies remind me too much of George Bush.
Lady Lynn's post on this page (plus endless posts by blacks on the Internet) reflects black racism against whites even before a black president is elected. Can anyone even imagine what blacks will do to whites and non-blacks when we really elect a black president? America has been fine for centuries without a black president, so why risk it?
I know this sounds odd but....I predict a McCain landslide.
Nice, Lady Lynn, tell us where to laugh. You need to, because your racist screed is not funny at all.
Obama is a wise, intelligent, and thoughtful leader. McCain looks and sounds phony and always looking for cheap shots.
Well, George W. Bush did the impossible, this week he killed American capitalism and transformed our country into another European-style socialistic economy. For those with big egos, we'll be the number 1 social economy in the free world. Now we are ready to compete in the global markets and don't feel bad about it. The Republicans' two stupid wars and deficit spending did what Russia and China tried but failed to do for the last 50 years. Congratulations Mr. President, now your legacy is forever cemented in our history.
Dan says:
"Do you want a president that recognized and worked to try and to prevent the problem or one that claims he can rescue us after he allowed it to happen?"
Just like another debacle where the US taxpayers got screwed, called the Keating 5? Or do you mean McCain confessing he knows nothing about economics? Or were you referring to McCain appointing Phil "You're a bunch of Whiners" Gramm as his chief advisor? If one guy should shoulder much of the blame for this mess it's Gramm who shoved through a bill in the middle of the night, deregulating crap like "OTC Derivatives". That was the beginning of the end - when your party, with McCain leading the charge, pushed for looking the other way while "the market" was supposed to regulate itself.
So I don't want to hear that crock that McLame had nothing to do with this; he had everything to do with it and you know it. But if you stop lying you lose, right?
Socialize debt. Privatize profit.
McCain's gang is responsible for this crisis, beginning with his chief economic adviser. What may be worse, however, is how, under the stress of the campaign, McCain shows signs of advancing senility.
I'm so weary of the republican smear machine.
I think McCain lives in Bizzaro world - he took 10 times more money from Fannie & Freddie than Obama, and McCain is running on public funding from us, the tax payers. If I worked for Fannie or Freddie - my donations to McCain or Obama would show up as - from the big bad Fannie or Freddie - & but it is from me. Also, McCain's money was bundled from Fannie & Freddie.. hmm - that means it would not be from me - but a group trying to get influence - who had more of that? McCain - the man that is taking public funding - you know tax payers money.
Finally, Fannie and Freddie - were privately held - until this month - so that money that McCain claims that was from tax payers is incorrect - if McCain forgot or didn't know - or lied, if he did know.
Wow, what a despicable post. Repugs are willing to inflame racial tensions to win this election. Get over it and grow up. Ha...ha...ha....ah..
INSANE McCCAIN
Yep, McCain went as nutty as a fruitcake there for awhile as the tragedy unfolded. So much for grace under pressure. And any military training for handling tough, high pressure situations must have been lost in the past 27 years as a Washington good-ol boy. McCain went Insane. He was spouting off that he would fire SEC chairman Christopher Cox. When a ship is in a hurricane and the capitan is trying everything possible to keep it afloat, do you fire the captain or let him do his job? This disaster has practically nothing to do with Cox anyways. President Bush, VP Cheney and fundamentalist right-wing Senators such as McCain are to blame. They have sold our country to China for trillions so that they could earn a few hundred million bucks. (Google Cheney's corp: Kellogg, Brown & Root for details). The USA is in debt up to its eyeballs as a result of Bush, Cheney and McCAin spending BILLIONS of US dollars that we DO NOT HAVE. The problem isn't Wall Street, it's Bush, Cheney, McCain and their "Blood for Oil Profits" money mismanagement.
USA OWES CHINA ONE HALF A TRILLION $$$ AND COUNTING
THIS IS **NOT** GOOD FOR HOMELAND SECURITY
Thanks to the Bush/Cheney/McCain gang, the USA is now owned by China to the tune of half a trillion dollars. If we didn't have so much debt, this would have been nothing more than a market hiccup. But, with so much debt crushing our economy, we're struggling to get through it. A special "Thanks" to BUSH, Cheney and McCain for becoming MULTI-NULTI MULTI-MILLIONAIRES while our men and women in uniform are spilling their blood so the Republican Elite can make extra-large profits from the IOraq war.
McCain has now shifted to panic mode. he's in a catfight. And to think that he's looking to Palin for help. Now picture him at the nuke switch!
"Opening up the health insurance market to more vigorous nationwide competition, as we have done over the last decade in banking, would provide more choices of innovative products less burdened by the worst excesses of state-based regulation." --John McCain
Wow, the Obama ad on this just writes itself. Game over, thanks for playing, John.
Lady Lynn, with that routine you're no "lady," but I have to say it's hilarious and right on the money. McCain is too white for this White Woman and I hope to Heaven Obama becomes "The Man" by a landslide. See you at the voting booth. :)
whoa I cannot believe that this diatribe was posted!!!
funny- but HBO funny as in not in prime time. a little raw don't ya think?
who is minding this hen house?
According to John McCain economic blue print, the economic structure of the country is very strong. The problem is the Americans. We are whiners! Where have these people been? It is the second major crisis in the nation after 9/11. And it all happened under the same President and the same Party! It is a joke to ask for
additional four more years. Also don't forget under McCain's economic plan investing of your social security on Wall Street is on the Table.
God Bless America.
These are bad times to ask for donation from American people if I was a presidential candidate and it show I care for the families and each citizens of this country. It seems to me there is a lot of money that drained into Obama's campaign and there should be a proper management of the campaign finances so that it can stretched till November instead of keep asking for dnation. The American people are fed up with this type of campaigning without taking into considration that money don't grow on trees. This shows they are going to run the country the same way only they wont have to begg for money anymore instead they will use the carrot and stick approach by taxing us more. Not the right way to do it.
I am writing on the 700 billion dollar bail out Sec. Paulson wants Congress to pass, again without any regulation or oversight! It seems to me that corporations are trying to save their own hides on the backs of the American people. We cannot allow this to happen to us again and again -- corporations first, people never. And no one knows what loans belong to who and they may never know. How can that be? It sounds fishy and criminal. We cannot just go rushing into this maze but we must carefully try to find our way out that will benefit the people this time and not the corporations, who are only trying to save their wealth, their way of life. Trickle down economics does not make sense because in nature we build from the bottom up, etc. a plant, a tree, a child and even when we build homes or cars we start from the bottom and expand up or outwards and that is how we should model our business dealings and growth. We cannot work against nature's wisdom and intelligence by hoping things will trickle down. It is just not sensible. We have a intelligent design through nature and we should use her model not man's greed. It is very hard for me to trust the people who got us into this mess to be able to get us out of this mess. That too does not make sense!
Lady Lynn, that is hilarious!
Best Wishes,
World Peace.
hey guys,
the queen says that its now to late to bail-out what its done its done and justice will prevaill
see you all !!
queen
All these degrading profanity that spewed from this radio commentator supposedly an Obama supporter who is black should not even be allowed to grace the pages of this blog. You must understand that this person who uttered these degrading remarks is really an illiterate idiot who perhaps can hardly write his own name. It is bad enough reading his remarks on radio, never mind reading it here. Hopefully this foulmouth guy will not be one of the people painting the White House black.
