GOP leaps to Palin's defense

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor September 9, 2008 04:49 PM

Joe Biden is helping take the lead in trying to take Sarah Palin down a peg -- and her Republican defenders are jumping on any opening to bash Biden for making questionable comments.

Biden was asked by a local television reporter in Milwaukee on Monday what Palin, the surprise GOP vice presidential pick who is energizing the party base, means for women.

"Well look, I think the issue is what does Sarah Palin think? What does she believe?’ I assume she thinks and agrees with the same policies that George Bush and John McCain think,’ Biden replied. ‘And that's obviously a backward step for women.

This afternoon, the Republican National Committee all but accused Biden of sexism.

“One would’ve thought that comments like the one Joe Biden made about Governor Palin today were reserved for the back halls of the old boys club, but apparently flagging poll numbers have brought this brand of offensive attacks to the forefront," Blair Latoff, a RNC spokeswoman, said in a statement. "The only step back Governor Palin represents is a step back for the entrenched special interests that Senator Biden has been chummy with for decades.”

  1. First off, I am a woman. So I think I should be allowed an opinion on what is sexist and what is not.

I have been thinking about the entire Sarah Palin for VP and YES, I believe if "foul" is cried at every step, it is a step back for women.

WHY? Because women have been trying to gain an equal footing with men for years. If Sarah is allowed entry into the race without an equal amount of scruitny (as any male would have), she has gained a "free pass". Therefore, she esentially has "CUT" in line. This will take women back. Not forward. She will have gained a place she does not earn. (Kind of like cheating.) PLEASE, PLEASE, quit complaining about everything . Let us get to know the real Sarah. We are interested in ISSUES. Let America and the World hear them. THANKS for letting comments be heard.

  1. Sarah Palin, is there anything you won't lie about?

  1. This comment had nothing to do with sexism and everything to do with the McCain/Palin policies with regard to women. Grow up! She is playing with the big boys now, and she will have to defend her policies, both to men and women.

  1. Wait a minute! Joe Biden's criticism of Sarah Palin's ideas about policies that would affect women's lives are supposed to be out-of-bounds, but Sarah Palin can say any old thing she wants about the Democratic candidates, and that's just fine and dandy? Isn't there a hefty dose of sexism in that double standard? Surely Sarah Palin knew the rules of the game when she accepted the nomination, among them scrutiny and criticism of her ideas. For her or her surrogates to call foul is an indication that she's not ready for the big time.

  1. I confess, one of the reason’s I will not vote for the McCain/Palin ticket is because of Palin’s gender.

    Am I sexist?

Perhaps, but not in the way you might imagine. As a woman, I want the first woman VP (or possible president) to be a woman I can be proud of. I want her to be better than some of the men who have held that office.

I don’t want that first woman to have Palin’s qualities, which are: narcissist, corrupt, viciously cruel, under qualified, and dishonest.

(The *viciously cruel* goes directly to her support of hunting wolves from the air.)

  1. Sen. Biden is right. And the RNC's spokesperson is essentially doing the "Look! Bright shiny thing!" response. Gov. Palin's policies are not progressive, and her tendency to link her religion to her governing will put women on a backward track, no doubt about it. It matters little if the person is charge is a theocratic bully, even if they do wear high heels and attain titles like "MILF".

  1. Actually, the election of Joe Biden a/k/a the admitted liar and plagarist, would represent a GIANT step BACKWARDS for the country.

  1. Wow, shouldn't this story be how the Republicans are playing the the sexism and gender card? Instead this is about Biden being sexist? Ridiculous drivel.

Why is there no analysis of McCain's position on Women's issues? Why not highlight the thrust of the argument Biden is making?

If this is a blog you should be able to really discuss these issues. Otherwise it comes across as a biased piece. At the very minimum you are allowing the Republicans to use your piece as a vehicle for their message.

Does that make you complicit in the cards being dealt?

  1. This looks like it is becoming a typical response:

    Palin: assertion

    Demoncrats: counter argument

    Republicans: SEXISM!!!!!!

When does she give back MY US tax dollars for the bridge?

  1. republican garbage...what she believes and commenting or even speculating about it is not sexist...what cowards!....face the issues...you had it for 8 years and screwed up...sarah needs to be vetted for her beliefs and thought processes.

  1. Biden makes a comment about Palin's belief in Bush/McCain's policies and this is sexist? Talking about someone's policies is not sexist, What's sexist is Blair Laidoff riding in like Sir Lancelot to save poor Sarah from criticism. If she can't take any heat at all, she should go back to Wasilla.

  1. Oh, come on Joe condescension again. That comment comes right out of the game propaganda. The key word is OBVIOUSLY. Translated-----If you women don't obviously get that this is a step backward you are stupid. No, Joe it is not a step back. You just want to CONVINCE women it is. We get it that the DNC expects us to get on board. Go use your condescension on some idiot. Obviously I get your PLOY! I'm just not stupid enough to fall for it DUH!

  1. This Karl Rove guy is a genius. He has turned the election into "THE NEW AMERICAN IDOL". He has replaced a tiresome, dried-out old candidate who is too confused to get the facts straight, and created tremendous buzz about a know-nothing right-wing Christian fundamentalist who won a beauty contest. Instead of looking at the horrible record of the last 8 nightmarish Bush years we now want to find out who is the sexiest, who has the best one liner put-downs? Hey Kids, while the the economy is going down the tubes, people are losing their homes and jobs, and respect for this country is at an all time low, lets have a Popularity Contest!! Its just like High School, wow, kids this is fun. The heck with boring political stuff, lets go for the cute gal with the smart mouth (her words also provided by Rove). Wake up kids, four years of McCain/Palin will leave you and your families far worse off than you are now. Can you afford to play these childish but potentially lethal games??

  1. So hunting for wolves is "viciously cruel", but killing unborn babies (even ones with disabilities) is tolerated. You liberals are all hypocrites!

You want Palin to answer questions--- so should Barack Obama!
-- What about his friendship to terrorist William Ayres
-- What about his 20 year friendship with racist and adulterer Rev. Jeremiah Wright
-- What about his ties and personal friendship to convicted felon Tony Rezko, who was one of Barack's major contributors during his time in the state senate.
-- What about Illinois having one of the highest unemployment rates-- during his tenure.
-- What about his habitual drug use when he was younger.
-- What about Chicago having one of the highest foreclosure rates in the country, when he hasn't done a single thing to help the people of his own community.

Why isn't the media asking Nobama these tough questions?-- I want answers.

  1. Oh the "The Truth". You must've been under a rock during the primaries. These and many other questions are long dead and answered. Your idiocy is proof the Republicans are mindless trolls.

  1. Truth at 6:57 As Jack Nicholson said- You want the truth-you can't accept the truth.
Why can't Palin answer any questions? We still haven't heard one word from her that hasn't been scripted. She has yet to tells us what her position is on anything except- pro-life, pro death penalty (kind of an oxymoron there) pro-hunting (oops that's killing again)
Where does she stand on the issues - I guess it would be sexist to ask her.

  1. The Republicans are such great fodder for the comedians, and it just keeps getting funnier and funnier. Whatta bunch of whiny wimps!

  1. It's amazing how many falsehoods and disgusting remarks about Palin are hitting the blogsphere. What's great is it shows how desperate the Dems are. It's also refreshing that nobody's buying the BS of Obama's vast army of blog trolls.

  1. If Biden attacks Palin at the debate all she has to do is ask him, "Why exactly was it you had to drop out of the presidential race in 1987?"

  1. I'm waiting....

So is anyone going to answer what THE TRUTH posted?!?

Hello!?! Liberals?! Where did they go?....

  1. My point is... Take your twisted claims out of whats really important, the issues. I guess when liberals have nothing to compare they start spreading lies. LOL

  1. Palin please bring up Biden's Violence Against Women Act. We need to see if he will ever get in touch with men and fathers. We are abused too and equally, something he forgot to include.

  1. McCain claims he would be ready from day 1 to assume the office of President of the United States. He has attacked Obama as being too inexperienced to be ready for the presidency from day 1; yet he picks as his vp running-mate the woefully inexperienced Palin. The McCain campaign has shielded Palin from the U.S. press; they knew from "day 1" she could not face the tough questions from the press regarding the complexities of the problems the U.S. economy is facing and foreign policy issues. If Palin is not ready from day 1 to face the press, how could she be picked for a position that is a heart beat away from the most powerful position on earth?

  1. Notice the ad-hom attacks and distortions by "conservatives." The will beat the Wright and Rezko thing to death even though those issues have already been discredited. Palin will get exposed during the debates.

  1. Classic bait and switch republican tactics are at work, here. Sooner or later, Palin is going to have to stand-up for herself and speak her own words qne not some canned speech. The republicans can cry about sexism all they want, but it's still not going to hide the fact they don't have anything new to bring to the table except four more years of W's policies. Can this country really take four more years of George Bush?

Posted by Sam September 10, 08 12:10 PM
  1. No ,matter how you feel about Sarah Palin, any woman considered and possibly elected to national office is a step forward for women. Joe Biden didn''t answer the question correctly -- the reporter gave him the loaded gun, and Joe shot himself in the leg. I'm not a politician, but I could have answered that one better.

Joe better start practicing appropriate responses to those types of questions, or a lot of Democratic and independent women are either going to vote for McCain/Palin, or just skip the vote altogether
