Heart not happy with McCain
As soon as that first guitar riff sounded in St. Paul, you could guess this was coming: Ann and Nancy Wilson, the sisters at the heart of Heart, are not happy that Republicans used their song "Barracuda" during the convention as a theme for Sarah Palin.
As several speakers mentioned about the tough-talking hockey mom, Palin was nicknamed "Sarah Barracuda" for her hard-nosed play on the high school basketball court. And since she grew up during the 1970s, it's more than likely that Heart was on her phonograph or 8-track player.
CNN reports that the Wilson sisters condemn the use of their song, and their record labels, Universal Music Publishing and Sony BMG, have sent a cease and desist notice to the McCain-Palin campaign. "We have asked the Republican campaign publicly not to use our music. We hope our wishes will be honored," they said in a statement.

Heart should be happy that someone is playing their music.
I would think a couple of Old Ladies would like the Old Guy!
Your CD's just went into the same trash bin as Jackson Browns!
Good thing too! Some people might have thought Heart was endorsing McCain, and when Heart speaks on politics, people listen!
Give me a break. They need to get over themselves.
I think Ice Ice Baby would be more appropriate for bible thumper Palin.
hey GOP most of these artists dislike your usage of their music for
your ;make us broke through your big mistake in Iraq campaign' , stick w/
Toby Keith for your rednecks!!
PS How about some healthcare reform? Whatever happened to
"no child left behind?- another GOP Failure!!!!!"
I think that Heart should be honored that their music has come back and is being used to promote a hard hitting good looking 40 something king (queen) of the hill woman! I was laughing and totally enjoying the moment when the song was played. Who knows I may download it from iTunes and say a prayer for our girl Sara!
What a burn on republicans. When will they stop stealing others music, speeches, themes this symbolizes how they run their campaign on plagiarizing and lies. After getting burned so many times in past of using music without permission you'd think they would atleast ask before playing.
The next great American song! Words by John McCain
Fight with me
Fight for what's right for our country
Fight for the ideals and character of a free people
Fight for our children's future
Fight for justice and opportunity for all
Choirs
Stand up, stand up, stand up, and fight!
Nothing is inevitable.
We're Americans, and we never give up!
We never quit!
We never hide from history! We make history!
Was that a riff? I thought that screeching would never end. They should have stuck with Chuck Berry.
This was not more absurd than Obama playing white country music after his acceptance speech. Talk about cynical.
why should the GOP honor copyright laws, they seem to think they are above the law!!
Heart's music has already been "coming back"... without the aid of McCain.
"Barracuda" was featured in the music video game, Guitar Hero III. It's been getting plenty of play without the need for politicians to infringe on any copyrights...
Which, by the way, if McCain did use the song without permission, where's the lawsuit? Did Jackson Browne sue because of his song being used without permission? If they aren't going to sue, why say anything at all?
Phill you sir are a tool. I guess you support theft also. That is exactly what the repugnants did. What a bunch of liars and theives.
It's called stealing, folks. The RNC had no right to use the music without permission.
I completely lost all respect I previously had for the Wilson sisters and the group Heart.
I will never, ever buy another CD of theirs nor will I ever go to one of their concerts.
When a video or concert tape is on TV, I will immediately change the channel and blog only nasty stuff about those lame, used up, has-been old ladies.
Get a grip, get a life and move on. You are WAY too full of yourselves, Ann and Nancy. And by the way, consider going to Weight Watchers, you REALLY need to lose about 150 pounds, Shamu.
And tell Obama to quit playing "Hail To The Chief" before every stump speech.
After this election it'll be more like "Hail to the chef" as he'll land on the back room of over-hyped Democratic politicians who fell on their face on election day (Dukakis, Gore, Kerry, Obama).
Stealing is stealing, it is not about whether they are endorsing a candidate, or whether people listen to what they have to say about politics. It is not about whether the lady's go for the OLD guy or not, the repukelican's did not get permission to use someone else's property, but I guess that is the way they do things, by stealing.
Personally I am tired of 5% getting richer and richer, and the gap between them and the middle class growing wider and wider.
I hope Heart sues them for defamation of character. I don't blame Heart for feeling insulted. McCain didn't ask permission to use their song because he knew the answer would be "NO WAY!!".
Just stupid. Do they think the fans that made them rich are all democrats? I didn't realize there was a political litmus test to by someones album. I own both Jackson Brown and Heart and didn't see them turn down my money! When will entertainers just stay entertainers?
Wow -- nice racism there, Catherine.
And before you ask, I'm a white, male, 47-year-old lifelong Texan.
Your attitude is why I'd never vote for a GOOPer.
The McCain campaign screwed this one up royally. They should have played Lynyrd Skynyrd's "That Smell" instead.
Hey call the RIIA
somebody is stealing music...LOL isn't that against everything the republican party suppostly against it? LOL yeah bunch of thief..LOL
Wow - some people clearly don't know anything about rock and roll or politics. Heart doesn't need anyone, least of all the Republicans, playing their music - they've already made their mark and their money. And, from their standpoint, I can see why they'd be pissed as hell about that party (a party to which they clearly don't belong) playing their music for a crazy zealot like Palin.
Stealing "Barracuda" was almost as lame as Reagan's attempt to appropriate Springsteen's "Born in the USA" as a jingoistic, pseudo-patriotic anthem. But then Republicans tend not to know what the song is about, they just like to sing along with the chorus.
Didn’t the Republicans steal Springsteen’s ‘Born In The USA’ too? Maybe they should steal Green Day’s ‘American Idiot’ next… since they really must be idiots for continuing to co-opt songs specifically written against THEM.
Gee, the Republican's pass bill after bill extending copyrights, pass the Millennium Digital Rights act which prevents us parents from copy our Disney movies in case our small children get peanut butter on the original, yet they have the audacity to steal someone else's copyrighted material themselves? How shocking, like the pigs in animal farm, all laws apply to everyone except the pigs who write the laws.
GOP hypocrisy be thy true name.
Cynical is using music without permission because you knew if you asked you would be refused.
McCain poor old dude, nobody wants to be associated with him other than redneck country stars.
Word is that Sarah was known as Sarahcuda for her vicious politics in AK.
Nothing was more ironic than seeing Republicans dancing to "everyday people". Everyday people WORK for the people that packed the Xcel Center. A song about accepting others and their choices... here's this group of judgmental folks who want less government until it comes to controlling other people's choices. Talk about irony.
She was called Sarah Barracuda because of her basketball playing, get your facts right before you start your mouth.
We are all Americans, Heart should be ashamed of themselves. I'll never buy anything with their songs on it. Oh, yea, they are oldies.
Silly Wabbits --- Don't you guys know, that if you're rich and Republican, you don't have to abide by trivialities like the Constitution or laws? The McCain campaign have stolen like five songs since January. They will continue to steal more.
[ And fyi: Van Halen is upset and considering a lawsuit, too, over their use of 'Right Now' . ]
Putting politics aside and looking at the situation legally, as long as BMI and ASCAP licensing fees are paid, "artists" don't have a say unless their song is used as an official theme song to promote a product or person. Barracuda was not used as a song to promote anything. It was merely played over the convention's sound system. Just as Madonna's "Holiday" was not used to promote Levis Blue Jeans when the song was played in every Limited clothing store in shopping malls during the 80's. If Ann & Nancy Wilson's legal stance had any bearing, I'm sure Chrissie Hynde would've nixed Rush Limbaugh from using "My City Was Gone" as his theme song.
Just read about this on a Blizzard gaming board that boasts 10M players.
Everyone laughed at the gall of Heart, a dead in the water band that no one listens to anymore anyway. I hope that gave them the publicity they sought from all this. Heart really made a fool of themselves.
The original poster that brought us the news noted that she couldn't even send Heart a dissatisfied note. Seems you have PAY Heart to talk to them. Hey Heart, get over yourselves! No one wants to hear that crappy song anyway!
Grace Slick is the Queen of Rock and a Republican. But I haven't seen her cry about anyone using her music. They can never compare to Gracie.
Those two just lost some royalties. Welcome to Dixie.... Chicks!
Let em have Barracuda and their draft dodging boy band.
I'll take "Nothings Gonna Stop Us Now"
Please. If that was your song being used to back a politcal legacy and agenda that Bush created (that most of the world utterly despises) WITHOUT your permission you would be pissed. Wait, you may be in favor of war and agression. Sorry.
I was just looking on iTunes - Barracuda is now the top selling song by Heart and the number 36 top selling download for the day. I would bet three days ago this song was not in the top 5,000,000 sellers ....... If Heart is so upset about this should we assume they will be giving back all the money they made in the last 48 hours?
Another thing I just thought ...... does Heart object when a radio staion owned by, let's say Rupert Murdoch plays one of their songs? Do they send a cease & desist to the radio station since it is benefitting a conservative owner?
Come on .............
You will notice that Ann and Nancy Wilson dont have much to say about the surge of people downloading their song and paying for it after it was played at the convention. That is a typical democratic elitist approach to taking your money and placing restrictions on you. I live near Seattle and can tell you first hand these two old timing musical hacks should have been happy anyone wanted to even hear their over-rated music. The trouble I always had with a Heart album was the fact that only one song was a decent cut, and the rest nothing but a bunch of boring garbage, with some wanna-be always kicking her leg like she had fire ants in her pants. I have a whole different outlook on heart now.
heart wrote a song about a bad relationship backstage with a fan and the song is a hard rock song written in 1977, its sex drugs and rock & roll hedonistic world of the 1970's and it was an anti establishments towards the music industry, and they are not a political and are no way endorsing any candidate whatsoever. I suggest that the McCain people shuld do their research on songs that are appropriate and copyright laws from the owners. Who has the right to use songs from rock bands who want nothing to do with politics and by the wa McCain lovers they are not running for office if you hate Heart you right wing assholes don't go to their concert period they have fans worldwide they can survive without all the poltics. Besides I hate politics and politics and music don't mxi. Heart has better things to do than hearing a bunch of drama queens in capital hill.
I was disappointed to hear that Heart sent a cease and desist letter to the GOP for using their song Barracuda at the Republican National Convention. Actually, there are no legal grounds to keep the song from being used. In addition, one of the writers of the song, Roger Fisher (also a former Heart band member) said that he is thrilled the song is being used. It would be nice to think that when we become adults, we stop acting like children, i.e., "I don't like you and you can't play with my toys." Maybe Nancy and Ann should stop to think about how many republican conservatives have actually sat in seats at their concerts. I think they'd be surprised to find that the concert halls would have been about half full if we hadn't. Like it or not, I will forever associate Barracuda with Sarah Palen. Although, I don't listen to the music of Heart often, I do occasionally listen to a song for nostalgia's sake. I will continue to do so.
Palin's theme song should be "Loser" by Beck. Palin is pro gun and pro life, and a SHOTGUN WEDDING is exactly what her 5 month pregnant 17 year old daughter is getting!
Its also ironic that the people most accepting of her daughters having sex out of wedlock are the liberals and democrats, and not the bible thumping republicans.
The washed up Wilsons should get over it, either that or call the whambulance. Typical liberal whiners and haters.
Given how pretty much every claim that Palin has made about her record has been proven bogus, I think Heart should let her keep the song. The lyrics fit. I wonder if Heart would let Obama use the song in an ad about Palin.
"And if the real thing don't do the trick, you'd better make up something quick!"
I thought Cher's, "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves" would have been more appropriate for the RNC convention.
Heart's not very bright. The rights are owned by others, not them. They need to deal with the license owners. Dumb Heart and lame publicity stunt.
HEART? IS THAT THOSE TWO OLD FAT BROADS WHO CAN'T SING AND HAVEN'T HAD A SONG OUT IN 20 YEARS?
Hi everyone. There's no stealing happening here. The Wilson sisters don't own the rights to the song. The folks who do (who flat-out admitted that they're Obama supporters) said it's OK to play the song. I guess that's that....
