McCain backers: Let's talk about sexism

Posted by Sasha Issenberg September 3, 2008 05:12 PM

ST. PAUL -- Former Massachusetts Governor Jane Swift led a group of Republican women who today repeatedly invoked "sexism"” as they accused the press and Obama campaign of conspiring to conduct "an outrageous smear campaign" against John McCain's running mate, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin.

"One of the things I heard from Democrats was how disappointed they were in their own party when Hillary Clinton was a victim of sexist attacks," said Carly Fiorina, chair of the Republican National Committee’s Victory '08 fund, who said that Clinton’s campaign helped to "finely tune women's ears" to such slights. "The Republican Party will not stand by while Sarah Palin is subjected to sexist attacks."

The remarks, made at a press conference at the Xcel Center here hours before Palin was scheduled to address the party's convention, were the latest in a concerted effort by McCain's campaign to paint Palin as a victim of unfair media treatment.

"You can do what you want to do, but we’re going to come back at you,' said Renee Amoore, a Pennsylvania businesswoman and party official, taunted the dozens of reporters in attendance.

But another McCain surrogate, Meg Whitman, the former president and CEO of eBay, went off-message today, saying there hadn't been media sexism against Palin.

"I actually think it's completely fair for the media to vet Sarah Palin," Whitman said on Fox News Channel. Iit was "the right thing to do" for the media to review the background of someone who is "running for the highest office in the land," she added.

  1. Gosh Renee, shouldn't you be home submitting to your husband like a good little lady? Don't you and Sara have some cookies to bake?

  1. So, let's review. Earlier today McCain and the GOP informed us that we, the American people, are not allowed to question or look into Sarah Palin's experience or qualifications, as if the U.S. were a dictatorship. And now the GOP is threatening the press - as if the U.S. were a dictatorship?

    I see.

The Republican hypocrisy truly knows no bounds.

  1. I have seen 2 photos of Palin's high heeled shoes - I am not sure what that has to do with the election, nor have I seen pictures of other candidates shoes. I would call that a little sexist

  1. What a charade. This is typical Rove-style pushback toward the media. The same methods that basically got us into war. Fot those with a short memory, the Bush/Rove folks lambasted the press for being too unfair and tough and of course, the media backed off, igonoring the half truths, and lies that led is into the overthrow of the country.

Palin is rightfully being examined very closely. The overwhelming majority of Americans know NOTHING about her until a week ago. It should come as no surprise that there is an active, accelerated drive to find out more about her. The sexism push by the McCain camp is completey outrageous and disingenuous.

  1. Askig her back ground is not sexism get a clear mind first if you want to sink with her in quick sand that is your choice but we are not going to let our country sink with these two candidats one self centerd selfish who cares about his election and she is lier and hypocrat..

  1. And they're not offended when McCain jokes about women being raped by gorillas and liking it. Seems like politics to me.

  1. Sexism works both ways, a man can be a victim as easily as a woman!

To accuse the Obama / Biden campaign of sexism is false and dishonest and I intend voting for John McCain.

  1. yeah! don't you dare question the decisions, judgment and qualifications of a complete unknown! Because she's a woman, didn't you notice? Hey Campbell Brown! You sexist woman you! No real questions or we will punish your network by refusing to talk to you.
This is how I'm going to respond to all criticisms of my work from now on. Hey, don't question me, you sexist! I'm a woman and don't question me! did you get that last part? don't question me!

    What sexist remarks?

Apparently those Republican women did not recognize Rush Limbaugh's voice and thought it was a Democrat.

  1. No one attacked John Kennedy for taking on the presidency while he had young children at home. Nor Bill Clinton when he had a school-age daughter at home. So why is Sara Palin being attacked? Is this not a clear double standard, and by those who like to self-righteously claim the exclusive moral high ground on feminist issues?

  1. Nobody's telling the press they can't question or look into Sarah Palin's qualifications. Or is that what you characterize making up stories about her baby and her daughter's pregnancy for political points?
There's a big difference between smears and reporting. Of course, those of you who have taken to calling Keith Olberman a reporter, may not see that point!

Posted by Beerme September 3, 08 04:01 PM
  1. Oh please. It hardly takes "a concerted effort" by the McCain campaign to point out the very obvious sexism in mainstream media. Obama took advantage of the sexist attacks on Hillary and now he's going to benefit from the same type of attacks against Palin. Whether or not you like Palin, the media really DID drop the ball on this year's election. I am completely sickened by the sexist coverage by male AND pathetically wimpy female reporters.

Sasha, if you don't have anything intelligent to write, you should go home and do the dishes like a good little lady.

Posted by tky September 3, 08 04:03 PM
  1. There is no "sexism" or attacks on the Palin family coming from the Obama campaign or democrats. These claims are being fabricated out of whole cloth by the republicans in a desperate attempt to turn Gov. Palin and her family into victims so they can then scream about sexism and intolerance from the other side. The charges of sexism are ludicrous. Someone in the press decided to publish pictures of the govs shoes - I suppose the republicans will claim that the Obama campaign is behind this.

Is it sexism to question a nominee's qualifications for the job? Friends of Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, speaking not for attribution, had this caustic comment. "She is unqualified for the job and everyone knows it," said one.

Posted by Michael Nevitt September 3, 08 04:06 PM
  1. To even use Sarah Palin's name in the same sentence as Hillary Clinton's is an insult to every Hillary supporter! There's no sexism going on here with Sarah - it's policy, policy, policy and a total lack of experience to do the job.

Hillary was more than qualified to do the job - Sarah isn't even qualified to talk about it!

Too bad McCain had to make such a rash, desparate decision to go for the extreme right vote in order to grab a little spotlight. Well that spotlight will soon be dimmed. The rash, desparate decision shows just how McCain thinks and plans - he doesn't!

  1. My daughters are women and they are a lot nicer then most of you who think you are something. Sara Palin will be the next Vice President because she accatually cares about you. You can say all manner of evil against her but she will love you anyway. That's just the way God's kids react to those who hate them. Hope you see the light.

  1. The entire mess is a blessing for Democrats across the US. The pick by McCain is a pointless attempt to cover up the truth about his campaign. While John McCain can be respected and thanked for his military service he should be banned from Washington and politics for his mistakes and choices. Had McCain known about the baggage his running mate Governor Sarah Palin was bringing with her; he NEVER would have made her his VP selection. Now he and the rest of The Republican Party as it put in the article are trying to do damage control. You guys can not have it both ways. WHAT A FLOP!!! I guess she(Palin) is the victim now for not stressing morals and raising her child properly or is it the system she wants to help create. It is just another example of how out of touch McCain and the Republican Party is and one of the major reasons he is SO WRONG for this country. They all jumped on Jamie Lynn Spears and her family after her issue came to light now Palin gets a pass no way. Don't throw rocks when you live in glass houses yourself!!!!

  1. A bunch a desperate liberals are spilling their guts on this commentary. Americans don't trust the media because they are drowned by the cesspool of liberal democrats. That is why foxnews is gaining on ratings over cnn (duh!)...
We are not stupid to notice the media love for Obama. Remember Americans remember and this bias will backfire.

  1. The sweet irony of watching Dems calling into question the credentials of an affirmative action candidate and the GOP crying foul!! It is a delight to see the lexicon of victimhood used against its creators.

  1. It's obvious they are trying to shame both the public and media into not asking any kind of questions about Palin. But, the strategy used here is more than that. The one thing the republicans have perfected over the years is controlling the conversation. This is another ploy to change the conversation into the discussion of sexism instead of the more concerning issues that have been floating in the past few days about Palin. Remember the AIP membership? That's more damaging to the republican ticket than anything else. But, by harping and complaining about "sexism", they are trying to change the topic. Evidently it's working to some extent as can be shown even on this blog. People are responding to the charge and pointing out how it's actually the republican talking heads who have been sexist all along. If we keep talking about that, then they are successiding. Dont let them change the conversation. Not now. Not this year.

  1. Julie, I second you on the Liberal = Sexist

Sexism is so ingrained in society that idiots don't recognize it. It's OK to criticize a women but not OK to criticize a black man. The black movement and collective white guilt have done wonders for Obama. The women's movement has really let women down.

Posted by kat September 3, 08 04:28 PM
  1. Questioning someone's qualifications is not a personal attack. It's a legitimate concern of voters who care as well as politicians and campaigners who want to focus on real issues. I don't remember Obama or his staff calling the questions his experience racist. Cut the victim routine. It demeans me as a woman.

    Posted by Y77OW September 3, 08 04:28 PM

These smears by Obama have been pure sleeze, and don't think for a moment that he isn't behind the Daily KOS and the Democratic Underground.

It is legitimate to question her relationship to a secessionist party in her state; it is legitimate to question her alleged abuse of gubernatorial power; it is legitimate to question her self-described title of "reformer" when she actively went after earmarks that McCain himself was against. I could care less about her family situation. But hey, let's roll out the boyfriend to show a sign of unity. wow -- politicizing your daughter's pregnancy much? Woman or man -- it is legitimate to question her credentials, ethics and qualifications to be vp. someone has to do it. It's obvious McCain hasn't.

    Posted by klh11 September 3, 08 04:31 PM
  1. Wow, the hypocrisy from both the republicans and the McCain campain is just unbelievable. How can you call the Obama campaign sexist when they are the ones touting equal pay for women and the right to choose during pregnancy??? We are talking about Sarah Palin, a staunch supporter of pro-life politics... this argument holds no substance whatsoever!!!

  1. Liberals are such hypocrites. If this was a liberal candidate getting asked all these questions you liberals would be up in arms and wouldn't believe that the horrible Republicans would ask such questions.

But now that the Republicans have a strong woman candidate it's open season, isn't it? Ask all the crazy questions you want, say anything about her, and act like you're just asking normal questions. Yeah right. Sucks to be you.

  1. I think Sarah Palin was added to the RNC ticket cause, they need a hot figure to reduce the fatigure of John Mc. with that said, any one could be sexiest, especially Fox news is Sexist and Bias. Also racists. Karl Rove, Fox news president they are all part of the big guns that use the media to detour the real focus of the candidate. Making something out of nothing.

Bottom line, John Mc, and Sarah P are both looser candidates. I would not think of voting for them. Voting for them is like voting for Karl Rove and George B.

RNC has no good news days so they run with bad news days. any publicity is better than no publicity

This is nonsense - her background, and choices are important to all of us because her judgement may one day be running this country. I'm sorry, but I don't really want a mother of how many, 5? under 21, with one challenged at that, and a pregnant teenager, to be distracted while running my country. Family values? That's a joke since she's obviously not interested in raising her family. Troopergate, secessionists, and yes her "family values" are all important issues and need to be explored to the fullest.

The same liberal white men who are trashing the palin women and who destroyed Hillary want you to believe they are more compassionate then Republicans, who they seem to hate more than our sworn enemies.
Democrats are going to lose this election. They are arrogant, deceitful and mean. I can't believe I wasted so much time as a Democrat.
I do believe it is time for "change, though." I'm going to "change" my voter registration to Independent and vote for McCain/Palin.

  1. From Richmond Times-Dispatch, Monday, July 7, 2008 ~

    Dear Editor, Times-Dispatch:

Each year I get to celebrate Independence Day twice. On June 30 I celebrate my independence day, and on July 4 I celebrate America's. This year is special, because it marks the 40th anniversary of my independence.

On June 30, 1968, I escaped Communist Cuba, and a few months later, I was in the United States to stay. That I happened to arrive in Richmond on Thanksgiving Day is just part of the story, but I digress.

I've thought a lot about the anniversary this year. The election-year rhetoric has made me think a lot about Cuba and what transpired there. In the late 1950s, most Cubans thought Cuba needed a change, so when a young leader came along, every Cuban was at least receptive.

When the young leader spoke eloquently and passionately and denounced the old system, the press fell in love with him. They never questioned who his friends were or what he really believed in. When he said he would help the farmers and the poor and bring free medical care and education to all, everyone followed. When he said he would bring justice and equality to all, everyone said, 'Praise the Lord.' And when the young leader
said, 'I will be for change and I'll bring you change,' everyone yelled, 'Viva Fidel!'

But nobody asked about the change, so by the time the
executioner's guns went silent, the people's guns had been taken away. By the time everyone was equal, they were equally poor, hungry, and oppressed. By the time everyone received their free education, it was worth nothing. By the time the press noticed, it was too late, because they were now working for him. By the time the change was finally implemented, Cuba had been knocked down a couple of notches to Third-World status. By the time the change was over, more than a million people had taken to boats, rafts, and inner tubes. You can call
those who made it ashore anywhere else in the world the most fortunate Cubans. And now I'm back to the beginning of my story.

Luckily, we in America would never fall for a young leader who promised change without asking, what change? How will you carry it out? What will it cost America?

    Would we?

    Manuel Alvarez, Jr.

  1. First of all, Obama first congratulated her on her nomination. His campaign afterwards questioned the McCain campaign on picking a running mate with such limited experience. The Obama campaign and the Media both question her ability to lead due to her experience NOT her gender. The republicans are using these tactics to distract from the point that Palin is NOT the most qualified VP choice, and it looks as though she was only picked to get the votes of women who will vote NOT due to experience but due to gender alone. One more thing... Palin is NO Hillary by no stretch of the imagination.

Posted by Ron September 3, 08 04:35 PM
  1. Ok, let's talk about it. It is entirely sexist of the McCain campaign to attempt to foist off a politically motivated vp choice as legitimate and then scream sexist when honest questions are raised about her. This smacks of a typical wedge campaign gimick to try to dupe women into voting for the McCain ticket just because Sarah Palin is a woman. How sexist is that? Women don't vote for women just because they are women! The McCain camp will soon experience the wrath of women who feel that they are being played against each other. This is cynical politics....period. And it will not work. The McCain camp would do well to listen to the guru, Karl Rove, who has expressed doubts about the "brilliance" of John McCain's obvious ploy.

"Alaska" and "Russia" also have the same amount of letters, so that's go to count for something too, right?

  1. Sarah Palin is not being attacked. Her history is being investigated, like any potential VP's should. The Obama/Biden campaign has been anything BUT sexist, in fact, it has issued statements defending her personal life from the press. Calling Palin unqualified (which everyone knows is true), or an abuser of power, is NOT sexist! Republicans are scared of all of Palin's shortcomings, so they're pulling the sexist card in response to legitimate critiques of her competence and suitability for the White House. The GOP needs to stop making excuses for their VP candidate and allow the press to investigate her background in order to properly inform the public about this little-known governor who herself is unfamiliar with many of the lower 48 states.

Ladies, if you take a look at the situation in today's media you will find a commonality.

Something just under the surface will tug at your conscience as if to say "this is strikingly familiar", and the pale and gruesome reality is that IT IS!

Remember when Hillary, a stellar candidate for the Presidential nomination, was at the height of her contest for the primary? Well do you remember what the media and bloggers did to her? It wasn't pretty, and more painfully, it WASN'T RIGHT!!!

    IT'S HAPPENING AGAIN!!

Certain bloggers/reporters/so-called-media constituents are at it again. They are making up stories about another woman candidate, solely for the purpose of SMEARING THAT CANDIDATE BECAUSE SHE'S A WOMAN!!

LADIES, YOU MUST NOT STAND FOR THIS DISRESPECTFUL AND UNEQUIVOCATED TREATMENT OF THE WOMEN CANDIDATES!! THIS MUST STOP!! THE TIME IS NOW!!

Whether you think Governor Palin should be the VP or not, YOU MUST DEMAND EQUAL TREATMENT FOR HER!! STAND UP FOR WOMEN!!

They're phonies. And they govern by figure-head. Forget partismanship. Could you imagine this woman with a finger on the NUCLEAR BUTTON? Who is kdding who???

  1. The accusation that mccain told the gorilla joke is baseless and typical of the same mindset that when Palin was annouonced pointed out that she was the mayor of a small town but ignored that she was a governor, just like Bill Clinton was with the same kind of national experience (actually more since Alaska with its oil gets more national attention than Arkansas did before Clinton became president). Talk about slanted. Look at the facts and Palin is as qualified to be president as Bill was in 1992.

  1. I, too, am outraged by the clearly sexist attacks on Sarah Pailn, most especially by some women reporters and columnists. Could it be that if she were a homely, overweight pol, she would be treated differently?

In addition, no male vice presiedential pick would ever be subject to these kinds of very personal attacks and lies, in publications like US Weekely and others. Wouldn't it be more prudent to give the woman a chance to deliver her speech tonight, then let the Democratic process take its course? Through the debates and coverage in independent outlets like Factcheck.org and others, we can hopefully, make an informed chioce, and not have to deal with this incredible spectacle. By the way, the American people should demand campaign finance reform, limit spending, give candidates free air time, and let the people decide, not the special interests, on whom is the best candidate for the American presidency.

Let’s see, With McCain, we cannot question his background because he was shot down and imprisoned, and now the background of this far right preaching formerly unknown governor cannot be questioned – even though the family values, home schooling and abstinence teachings that the far right loves seems to directly clash with what’s really going on in the candidates’ life.

Or is it to try and give her a crash course on "How to Avert Real Issues"? Yeah, sexism is a much bigger issue than mutual assured destruction. I understand now. Thanks

  1. JB,

Your condescending remarks toward Renee are both uncalled for, and immature. Maybe you should look in the mirror and ask yourself whether the feminist propoganda you ingest on a daily basis is making you a happier or more bitter person. Your comment seems to imply the latter. There is nothing wrong with taking care of your husband OR being a "good little lady". In fact, what you may find is that by being a "good little lady" more often, you will earn the respect of good men. I say 'good men' because I acknowledge that not all men are good. However a good man deserves a good women. If you want a good man, just ask yourself: Am I a good woman, "good little lady" or a feminist b*tch.

  1. The Republican Party has been playing the holier than thou card for years. Even the slimey Newt Gingrich who told his first wife that he was divorcing her when she was in the hospital being treated for cancer, tried to play the role of being a pinnacle of morality. There's obviously family issues that are dogging the Palin family just as in many other families. There's no set of parents, liberal or conservative, that wants to hear that their 17 year old unmarried daughter is carrying a child. But it is ironice that the present Administration, which McCain/Palin are certain to emulate in their policies if elected, has imposed a Gag Rule on any mention of family planning by government run health agencies.

I'm having a howling laugh that they are now pointing the finger outward to cover for this hasty unqualified pick of McCain's. There is a lot wrong with Sarah Palin that has absolutely nothing to do with her gender. Republicans if you manage to fool americans and american women with this one you will have indeed taken the cake and fed it to us too.

  1. The GOP cannot have it both ways. The Christian wing of the party has always criticized mothers who work outside the home. This is a woman who three days after giving birth to a special-needs child returned to work. Family values? Or blatant careerism?

I know that one of the "themes" of the McCain campaign is "Country First" but sometimes you have to put your family first.

I had the same problem with Edwards when he decided to continue his presidential campaign after it was announced that his wife's cancer had returned.

  1. This has Karl Rove written all over it. McCain cannot be victimized because of his POW experience which he, himself, has diminished as he uses it as his qualification FOR EVERYTHING! So, they pick this lightweight, Palin, knowing full well that media mongrels will attack her making her the victim.

Who are the sexists here? Really! The McCain camp continues to insult the intelligence of the American people; now they are insulting women to boot.

They've been federalized the entire time. As a Guardsman I resent the idea of a Governor being portrayed as commander of federalized troops

  1. Way more racism in this election then sexism (if any). Saying he only got this far because he is black ignoring his many accomplishments in the US Senate, Attacking him on his pastor when other pastors have said way worse about this country and it's citizens in evangelical churches, saying he is a "slick talker" and not simply an intelligent personw ith vision, saying he is "articulate" as if it's a surprise, saying he is more "white" eventhough most whites in this country ae more Larry the Cable Guy then James Bond.

Also Hillary's internal memos show that they instigated the sexism talk and you gullible idiots fell for it.

But if Obama was to talk about that whites would just cry "REVERSE RACISM!!!! ALARM ALARM ALARM!" and whites would rally around their so-called war hero pure white as snow JOhn mcCain.

Sorry but stating a fact is not SEXIST. It wasnt sexist to say that Hillary was mathmatically DEAD int he nomination. It wasnt close at all...sorry.

Plain is the VP pick because she is attractive, a Jesus Freak and female. THE END. Call me sexist all you want. So long as you call it the truth.

Sorry but it's not sexist to state a fact: HILLAR

  1. Nobody questioned Kennedy as a parent in the White House, because of the following,

1)Jackie was the mother, not John. Yes this maybe sexist.....but at the time, it was common and expected for women to stay home and raise the children while the men worked.
    2) The Kennedy Children were not infants. Sure they were young, but they could walk and talk and therefore didn't require the same 24 hr care a newborn does.
    3) People are questioning her commitment to family. Who will her newborn child know more of, the daycare nanny or mommie.....if mommie is vice president, the answer is Nanny. Seeings how she chooses to accept the vice presidency nomination, she is putting family in last place.
4)In her daughter, people are seeing hypocrosy. It is OK for her daughter to have premarital sex and get pregnant, while she subscribes to a belief system that says it is wrong. (Similiar to Dick Cheney's support for his gay daughter to have a baby and be with her partner.....he is OK with it, but it is not right for others to do the same) This also seems to say that while she wants to tell others how to live, she can not control her own household. What's that say about her ability to lead others? Not good for the country.

  1. Why don't you all stop acting like children and face the real issues? Sarah Palin's daughter doesn't deserve the critism of an entire nation, as Barak Obama has clearly stated.
Now, I have read all these "sexist" comments and the only one that has anything that actually related to Palin was a compliment by Joe Bidden that stated that the only non obvious differences between the running canidates was that she "is good looking." Meaning she looks better than all of the men running... Nothing more. She was a beauty queen so it isn't a sexist remark.
So grow up. Sexism is not present except in the feeble minded conservative media.

In a similar leap of logic- is it likely that if Sarah Palin was a white male, first term governor from Alaska with an unwed pregnant 17 year old daughter, he would have been considered for the VP spot. I don't think so. Is that sexist or just realistic. This is one crazy campaign.

Talk about sexism -- the only reason she was chosen as VP is because she has breasts. A man with her lack of experience would have NEVER qualified for the ticket.

If Democrats are responsible for sexism by questioning her lack of experience...then the Republicans are guilty of racism for attacking Obama's.

  1. Keep talking guys - she just clinched the election for McCain even if you coasty liberals want to deny it. Why do you and the media attack her? Because you fear her.

You fear her because she is a strong politician with a reputation for getting things done: renegotiating with oil companies to the benefit of her state, and brokering a deal for a natural gas pipeline to the lower forty-eight. She has much more experience than your presidential candidate.

In addition to this, you fear her because she supports the second amendment, is an outdoorswoman, and has smashed stereotypes. For crying out loud, she worked on a fishing boat - find me a liberal woman that has that kind of moxie.

You hate her because she has ascended the political ranks through her own merit, and not by the blessing of the Democrat Party. And everyone knows that women and black politicians are only accepted by the media if they rise through the democratic ranks - just ask Clarence Thomas.

Lastly, you fear her because she is pro-life. And a strong, pro-life woman that other women would seek to emulate terrifies you.

So go ahead and try to Bork/Thomas this candidate. It will only reveal your true nature - fools, hypocrites, and liars.

The media bias is so pronounced on this one, I don't see how you guys can even look yourselves in the mirror. I should know, I was a J-school graduate.

  1. Anyone who chooses to step onto the national platform is going to be put through their paces and have to face incredible fire. Every politician on the national stage has had to deal with it. This is just part of the process. If Gov. Sarah Palin can't do this on her own, then that is something that will go towards determining what kind of leader she is. If the Public gets the sense that she needs a lot of support as she walks this walk, then she will be diminished in the eyes of the Public. I find it incredible that the Republicans are so unsettled by the treatment of the Media, since they certainly know how to dish it. Hillary has had to face this kind of commentary and scrutiny for over 20 years, and when comments were made about sexism towards her, this same Gov. Palin essentially said Hillary should stop whining. I'm sure Palin doesn't appreciate all the "girls" trying to threaten the Media on her behalf -- she's a gun-toting, root-tooting frontier girl and should be able to take all this with both hands tied behind her back.

  1. McCain's choice of Palin proves him incompetent and reckless. McCain had only met Palin once(!) before he chose her to be his running mate. His staff had not vetted her. And yet he chose her to be a 72-76 year old heartbeat away from the presidency of the United States of America. McCain's poor judgement mirrors that of Bush's. Palin (and all republicans), continue to give big oil ownership of America, your wallet, and eventually your mortgage. Not to mention the fact that conservative republicans despise the Constitution of the United States, (not that Americans really care about small details like that - their main concern is being able to afford milk right now.)

  1. The issues should not be if Palin is male or female. The issues should not be if her daughter is pregnant or not. I am sick of hearing about her unwed daughter being pregnant. The news media needs to work a little harder about finding things more urgent to report on. The issue is who she is, what she is capable of doing and getting done. Hilary Clinton was the wife of a womanizer. Hilary Cinton only had experience of being the wife of Bill Clinton. So what does that make her. A scorned woman? We all know that he did not have sex with that woman!!!! We got sick of hearing that as well. Barrack Obama will not salute our American flag but people what him to be our AMERICAN President. What is american about that. What news is everyone listening to and not listening too!!! What news is everyone dwelling on. What issues are the important ones!!!!! Barack Obama has spent less than a year being a senator on the job and the rest of the time giving lip service to anyone who wants ot listen. He has no experience what so ever of being commander and chief. He has some great writers and lots of speaking experience. Does that make him a Presidential candiate. Find out about the issures that matter. Don't take my word or the word of someone on the internet you don't even know. I live in Wasilla Alaska and I am still trying to sort out the trash from the facts. Wasilla is a beautiful communtiy with lots of wonderful people. It is one of the fastest growing communities in Alaska. I do not know Sarah Palin but I have met her some of her family members. That does not make me qualified to answer questions concerning Sarah. I know that she has made Wasilla a better place to live in the past couple of years. I am hoping and praying that she is the real thing but I will find that out for myself. Everyone needs to shutup long enough to listen and learn and quit all your ass-u-meing what you don't know and try and find out what the truth really is. Let her speak and campaign and if she can't handle it we will all find out soon enough. Get off her daughter and her baby. Look at your own family and tell us if they are perfect or better yet look in the mirror and what stories do you see there. It seems the harder you try the more you get crucified. Look at Christ himself!!!! We need to concentrate on the important issues not the gossip of whoever is trying to deter what is important for all AMERICANS!!!!!
God Bless America and God help us to make the right decision for all of Americans future because if we make the wrong one we are all going to suffer for it.

  1. To FY Lim.
Nobody I know is attacking Bristol Palin for being sexually active and pregnant. Thats her private business and how she and her family handle it should be their private business. Instead the family and the GOP have decided to offer up Bristol in a press conference and make her a campaign issue by touting her "decision to have the baby" as the morally superior one that demonstrates the righteousness of the VP candidate. One shudders that the parents of this girl would so willingly engage in this exploitative spectacle. And as for Bristol's "decision to have the baby" (to quote her parents' press release), a decision implies that she had a choice and say in that choice. Did she? Would her parents support her if she had made a different choice. We'll never know. But we do know that Sarah Palin, given the chance, would take away the right of every pregnant school girl (not to mention all the other women in America) to make any other choice than "have the baby".

Posted by Michael September 3, 08 05:35 PM
  1. You have to give them credit, the Republican party is expert at controlling a message. First, they reveal that Bristol is pregnant, out of the blue. Why did they do this? Because liberal bloggers, such as on Daily-Kos (not even Kos himself), were saying that perhaps Trig is Bristol's kid. Now, after they release this tidbit to the press, the press covers it. Then, the Republicans criticize the press for covering the press release! Ta-da, instant controversy. And Daily-Kos suddenly morphs into the "Obama campaign" spreading malicious rumors. It would be like Obama criticizing a Drudge Report as the "McCain campaign". The Republican party is clearly just a hell of a lot better at the political game than the Democrats.

Anyway, the press couldn't care less about bias, they just want a story that sells. If you want to see real bias, just scroll down to us posters. This is the all spin zone.

This is his second child; the first was with a 13 year old girl. Even by Alaskan standards (which are very loose) that is a bit young.

Sick.... really sick... yea, we want her in the White House. Her and her husband are good evangelicals, and typical of the breed. But lets move on to other issues.

Will she support states that wish to secede from the United States, since her and her husband were both in a party pushing to have Alaska secede from the Union?

Will she legalize pot since she smokes it herself?

Will she start supporting unwed mothers, particularly teens so they can finish an education through college?

Are we supposed to "give her a break" because she is of "the weaker sex"? I don't think so. As a woman I'm offended that McCain's camp is screaming sexism. The contrast between both Democrats and Republicans is clear. The questions we ask of our candidates are important like their judgment – Americans have a right to take a close look at McCain's choice of VP who is a heartbeat away from the Presidency.

I can see why people are not inspired by McCain's choice this was McCain running to the right, which left out the rest of America.

What doesn't inspire us is the Republicans are going after the media on this. We are talking about the mainstream media who are asking the questions that are on our minds about the decision making process of McCain.

  1. Can't compare Palin's kids to Kennedy's kids or to Obama's kids. No comparison. NEITHER Obama NOR Kennedy had the houseful of minors that Palin will have 4 months from now:

1- Sarah's newborn baby with downs syndrome, requiring lots of special medical and parenting attention
2-Bristol's newborn baby, whose parents are still children, so baby will likely need to be raised by Mr & Mrs Palin for 4-5 yrs, while Bristol and Levi go to school to create careers for themselves
3-17-yr-old Bristol, who clearly needs more parental attention to guide her as she expedites the transition from teenager to adult mom
4-TWO other minor children who will be lost in the shiffle as the scant adult attention is given to the two newborns

With a house full of minors like this, NEITHER parent (male or female) should take a job where they have to spend the next 4 or 8 yrs extensively traveling around the nation and the world.

If Obama or Kennedy took such a busy job and left their wife alone to take care of all these minor children, I'd say both men had poor family values and were placing their career ahead of their family.

It worked for her family just like it works for America kids in general...NOT!

Big surprise: the chickens come home to roost on this issue just like the others. Sure, the media are sexist: they've been able to hurt mostly Democrat women because the Democratic Party led the way in nominating women.

    Welcome to the club, Palin.

She is a candidate of "family values"--social conservative, anti-choice, anti-affirmative action, and, I'm sure, if she's given the opportunity, anti-ERA.

If Senator McCain inquired internationally, he would find that his selection of a running mate has the rest of "the world" both laughing and crying. The laughter comes from claims that Palin is the best person to be one heartbeat away from becoming the most powerful leader on the face of the earth. The tears come from fear that Palin might be one heartbeat away from becoming the most powerful leader on the face of the earth.

As they say, "the whole world is watching," and no doubt thinking that our political process is incredibly shallow. We owe it to ourselves -- and the rest of the world -- to choose our leaders more wisely than this!

  1. To: Concerned Voter

Amen and Amen. Couldn't have said it better.

Thank you taking the high road and the right road.

My questions are where are the issues in this campaign? Where is the 'no pandering' campaign McCain promised from the start?

I am a woman and am all for woman to make inroads. But this is not the way to do it. This is a circus. It makes a mockery of woman. It makes us look like we need to pander for attention in an effort to be respected.

If I thought for one minute that McCain's pick was seriously considered, I would applaud the effort. But this is nothing more than a desperate move to pander to the base and try to get a few of the needed 'women' vote.

I am a woman and I am ashamed. This is not history, this is exploitation. And the saddest thing of all is, Governor Palin doesn't get it. What does that say about her judgement and character?

  1. It is all very simple.

    Oil.

Palin is married to it, governs it, and will benefit more from it than Cheney did with Haliburton.

Nothing sexist there, just the worst kind of comparison.

Someone pointed out Clinton had Chelsea at home.

Well, in the last month here in Cincy two mother's left their newborns in their cars while they went to work. The children died. The mother's were both well paid and well educated leaders.

    Here is sexism:

If Palin gets into office, the secret service won't let that happen.

I am beggining to think all women who work full time should have secret service protection for their children.

  1. And to all of those who say do not talk about the kids; You are right.

Why can'tMcCain and Palin stop parading the two seventeens year olds around?

  1. As a woman and a Christian, I am appalled by Palin.

I am not a sexist and have experienced sexism in the workforce; I will vote for a qualified woman but not Palin under any circumstances.

Sarah Palin is a very, very selfish woman who places her own ambitions above her family, especially her daughter. I cannot even begin to imagine how Bristol really feels no matter what is said publicly. Her mother has put her out there to be ridiculed, unfair though it may be. Her mother also believes in abstinence only which was a complete failure in Bristol's case.

Sarah Palin also does not believe in abortion under any circumstances -- tell that to a rape victim, a 12 girl who is a victim of incest, or the woman who could die giving birth.

Palin also does not accept evolution and wants creationism to be taught in schools. Nothing like making our chldren miss out on a quality education by disallowing science.

Palin does NOT have the experience to be vice president; she never left the country until 2006 and how long has she lived next door to Canada?!?!

Palin asked an interviewer "what does the vice president do?" I know some middle schoolers who can answer that question, even if she can't.

We do not need another idiot (like Bush is) who rejects science supports extreme views on abortion, birth control, etc.

Wake up, America! This selfish, unqualified, prejudiced against science person wants to be vice president -- a heart beat away from the presidency and you must realize McCain's age is an issue.

  1. AHEM.

When McCain and the GOP flunkies condemn such misogynist moves as Citizens United Not Timid, when they squash misogyny instead of giggling at "beat the b*tch" comments, then they can talk. They haven't and they need to own up to what THEY have done before they go on and on about the Democrats.
