McCain challenges Obama on education

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor September 9, 2008 06:46 PM

John McCain's campaign hit back on school reform late today, launching a TV ad that raises the red-hot political issue of sex education.

"Education Week says Obama 'hasn't made a significant mark on education,' the announcer says, as a series of newspaper headlines and images of Obama appear on the screen, "That he's 'elusive' on accountability, a 'staunch defender of the existing public school monopoly.' "

That challenges Barack Obama's speech today on overhauling public education. Then, the spot highlights Obama's support for a sex education bill while in the Illinois legislature.

"Obama's one accomplishment? Legislation to teach 'comprehensive sex education' to kindergartners," the announcer continues. "Learning about sex before learning to read? Barack Obama. Wrong on education. Wrong for your family."

The Obama campaign said that he voted for a sex education bill while in the Illinois legislature, but that it clearly stated that the instruction should be ‘‘age appropriate’’ and that parents could opt out.

“It is shameful and downright perverse for the McCain campaign to use a bill that was written to protect young children from sexual predators as a recycled and discredited political attack against a father of two young girls – a position that his friend Mitt Romney also holds. Last week, John McCain told Time magazine he couldn’t define what honor was. Now we know why,” said Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton.

The McCain campaign said the Obama camp's response to the ad was "hysterical."

“The Obama campaign has not disputed any of the facts in our ad, but if they want to question John McCain’s honor and record of service to this country, then that’s a debate we welcome,” McCain spokesman Brian Rogers said in a statement.

  1. "The bill in question -- never passed, by the way -- was intended to sanction the teaching of basic boundary lessons to young children, as in: if someone touches you or makes you uncomfortable, tell an adult." -- Marc Ambinder

  1. I guess McCain would prefer children get molested then learn when touching is wrong. That was the purpose of the bill.

  1. Why can't McSame come up with some creative "change" on his own? He is clearly out of touch if he thinks kids are not exposed daily to sexual overtures. As a parent, I have found that the more things become "hush hush"...the more interesting it becomes to the child.

  1. When did that response from Obama question McCain's record of service?

Ooooh, it's just another "POW!" answer from McCain

  1. And if girls get pregnant as a result of incest or rape, they will be out of luck if Palin gets a crack at appointing Supreme Court justices (as many as 3 may resign during this term). Palin opposes abortions except when a woman's life is in danger - not for rape or incest. Save our Supreme Court. Vote Obama.

During the RNC, McCain also said he is pro-life and will appoint justices that will not legislate from the bench (he then gave the Bush wink to the neo-con crowd). Save our Supreme Court. Vote Obama.

  1. Once again McCain is trying to use lies and scare tactics to prevent Senator Obama from gaining votes. It simply won't work. Americans are tired of the lies and scandals produced by the McCain camp. Can we please just have an honest campaign. If you are losing why fight dirty. It's just ridiculous to suggest that Senator Obama would support a bill which didn't protect our children. WOW. McCain - once again. Low Blow!

  1. Oh my God. The images that they used of his smiling face, coupled with the distortion of what this actual bill was meant to do. The message they are trying to send--that he condones teaching Kindergarteners sex with a smile--it is...I can only say that it is sick. I mean...someone, somewhere in the McCain campaign is actually mentally ill. It makes me naseous.

  1. When will the press do it's basic duty of telling the truth. Instead of just giving us the two sides of the story, can the reporter put on his thinking hat and say, gee, one side is LYING?

  1. I will teach my kids about this subject, thank you. It gives me the creeps to think of 5 year olds being taught this at school. I am glad Obama failed on this one.

  1. Am appalled by this distortion of the facts and the obvious "swift-boating" that has begun. McCain has demonstrated that he will do and condone anything to get elected. The only thing that scares me more that McCain in the oval office is Palin in it. The freedoms we hold so dear will not be eroded but eliminated.

  1. Another nice piece of biased reporting, full of McCain attacks and responses without equal reporting on the other side of it. Not to meantion, this was a great way to get McCain's ad out for free, no extra cost to the republicans. Nice one. Let me guess who this reporter endorses.

  1. Illinois' "comprehensive sex education" bill was yet another case where liberals want the big government and the schools to do the job of parents. Why do we need teachers to talk to our kids about how to avoid inappropriate touching or any other sex-related topic? That's the parents job! I want my kids' teachers to educate them on math and science and art and geography - not on where to get condoms and how to use them.

  1. MM:

The reason techers need to tell kids about inapropriate touvhing is because most parents do not or not until it is too late. On top of that the most common abuser is either a parent or direct family member, so again another blow to relying on the abusers to protect childern.

So when do you expect to talk to your kids about sex. Do you plan to inform them how to use condoms, lubricant and other tools to practise safe sex?

Teenagers are having sex at younger ages, my sister in seventh grade is worried that she is still a virgin and has mentioned several times about friends having 'sex'

Will you give your children to tools to protect them against STDS and Pregnancy?

didn't think so, which is why the schools need to be PART (not all) of the education.

  1. Has anyone actually read the ciriculuum put forth in this legislation? It's appalling... and it does NOT just say "don't let anyone touch you..etc." It is explicit and in my opinion as a mom of 3 young girls, WAY too much information for a 5 year old. I know it never passed.. but.. .that doesn't make me still floored that Obama would vote for something like this. Rediculous. Sorry, but, at age 5, this kind of education falls with the parents. If the parents aren't doing it, my kid still has a right to go to Kindergarten without being inundated with this trash from the teacher.

  1. I worked on a city council campaign in which our opposition accused our candidate of child molesting. We were outspent by 3 to 1. We crushed the liers with massive volunteer energy. Yes we can !
