McCain honors soldiers with momentos
John McCain, who still wears a bracelet given him by the mother of a New Hampshire soldier killed in Iraq, is now talking about being given the dog tags of a soldier killed in Afghanistan.
He told supporters in Blaine, Minn., this afternoon that when his plane landed in Wisconsin on Thursday, Cheryl Lee Patrick from Ladysmith, Wisc., handed him an envelope.
"Please support our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq," it said on the outside.
Inside the envelope were the dog tags of her son, Army Staff Sergeant Patrick Lee Lybert, 28, killed in Afghanistan in June 2006.
"I was deeply moved," McCain said.
And when he landed in Minnesota today, McCain said, he was greeted by an injured National Guard sergeant.
"It puts everything in perspective, my friends," he said.
Lynn Savage of Wolfeboro, N.H., gave McCain a bracelet bearing the name of her son, Matthew Stanley, who was killed by a roadside bomb in December 2006. That story has become a staple of McCain's stump speech, and Savage is one of the real people who became part of candidates' narratives this election year.

Dear Bloggers,
FOR CLARIFICATION:
I gifted to Senator John McCain PHOTO DOG TAGS I had made!
I HAVE MY SON'S PERSONAL, CHERISHED, RESPECTED AND HONORED DOG TAGS!
Description of the tags I gifted Sen. McCain is not correctly referenced by press, that’s not his fault, nor do I think the press ment to mislead anyone as there is clear video and photos of Sen McCain displaying Photo Dog tags.
View the video, picture of Sen McCain holding in CLEAR VIEW you can see they are PHOTO tags. On front is my son's photo, name, back is KIA date / location, unit, his 3 major medals: Purple Heart, bronze star, Silver Star. These were made by designs on demand and are beautifully done. Brothers, grandparents and cousins have them also.
There have been some who have unkindly, viciously attacked myself and my dear Senator so be sure of what you say. I am a Gold Star Mother advocating for troop support. It's not an issue of for or against the war. It's about remembering and standing behind the troops who stand in front of us!
I told my son “thumper" it. Remember? Bambi? "If you can't say something nice don’t say anything at all."
I found Senator John McCain, Gov. Sarah Palin and her husband to be the warmest, most sincere down to earth people one could hope to meet.
Yesterday in front of me was the man I have held in high esteem for so many years. A man my own son greatly respected and called a hero.
As he came down the flight of steps from the plane, In my mind and heart I was seeing that younger John McCain, the soldier I watched on television return home in 1973 when I was but 17. I remember my heart breaking and tears running then.
Now all these years later I stood before him as he walked off a plane, this time me being the mother of a Fallen Soldier - my mind could barely assemble it all.
Senator McCain did exactly what I and my son's fellow soldiers hoped he would do. Not only did he give tribute to my son, he acknowledged Afghanistan!
Thank you Senator McCain for such honor and respect that you gave us all.
Sincerely,
Cheryl Lee Patrick
Mother of SSG Patrick Lee Lybert
KIA 21 June 2006, Afghanistan
John McCain does not support veterans. Look at the voting record of both candidates and you will find that Obama's support is much, much higher. McCain is hoodwinking the American people on this one. But don't take my word for it. Google it yourself.
