McCain launches Palin 'truth squad'
John McCain's campaign announced this afternoon that it has enlisted a "truth squad" to combat the growing list of accusations and attacks on his running mate, Sarah Palin.
Former Massachusetts governor Jane Swift is one of the leaders of the group, which also includes members of Congress and others.
"We're proud of Governor Palin's leadership in Alaska and record of taking on entrenched special interests and the good old boys network," Swift said in a statement. "Governor Palin's commitment to reform is well-known but there are those who would seek to distort that record with vile rumors and smears against her, her husband, her children and her friends. We will not allow those on the left and in the media to smear a woman who has always served her constituents with honor. We know the truth and are committed to ensuring it as well."
The McCain campaign, which has been complaining about "smears" of Palin, said it is reacting in part to a Wall Street Journal report that Democrats have dispatched 30 lawyers, investigators, and opposition researchers into Anchorage to find information on the first-term governor.

This is actually a serious comment. There are plenty of rumors flying around blogs like this one about all the candidates. I found one blog, by ChasRMartin, which lists out the 100 or so Palin rumors. It's updated daily. Just google ChasRMartin to find his web site since we probably can't put web links on this page. He has some funny remarks so adds some levity to this whole process too.
For Obama rumors I've only been able to find the official rumor rebuttals on their campaign web site. Nothing yet by a third party unless someone knows of something else. Please share.
Or go to FactCheck and see what comes up on all the rumors.
I know spreading rumors is a fun game (and some take it too seriously) but if you want to see what's really true and what isn't then check out the sites that I've mentioned.
What a WONDERFUL idea. The first woman to have the chance to become the first Vice President of America and look how she is treated! Outrageous.
On the news today. Remember this guy from the primaries?
Barack Obama’s former pastor has been cavorting with another man’s wife, whom he romanced while she worked at a church in Dallas run by one of his disciples, according to a report in the New York Post.
Elizabeth Payne, 37, told the Post that she and Rev. Jeremiah Wright, 67, had a sexual relationship this year and that she was fired from her job when the affair was made public. Payne had been working at Friendship-West Baptist Church as a secretary to the Rev. Frederick Haynes III, a longtime Wright protege.
“I was involved with Rev. Wright, and that’s why I lost my job and why my husband divorced me,” Payne was quoted saying in Tuesday’s newspaper. She said she has filed a wrongful-dismissal claim with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
According to Payne’s estranged husband, Fred Payne, 64, Wright e-mailed Elizabeth Payne and told her he was going to leave his wife, Ramah, for her.
Wright married Ramah more than 20 years ago after he unsuccessfully provided marriage counseling for her and her former husband.
Fred Payne said members of the church, including Haynes, would not be pleased about the interracial aspect of the relationship.
“People wouldn’t be happy to know that my wife was sleeping with a black man,” he said.
Sarah Palin: "My boyfriend's back and you're gonna be in trouble!"
Thank goodness for big, strong Johnny McCain! He has a terrible temper if you diss his gal.
Maybe he should have done this BEFORE he pulled her name out of the hat.
I wonder how much of this "Truth Squad's" time will be spent on actual smears — and how much trying to perpetuate lies.
For example: the faked photo of her in a bikini waving a gun that's been circulating the net? That's a smear. Why? Because it's fake!
On the other hand, the accusation that she was before the "bridge to nowhere" before she was against it? That's absolutely true. She's been half-lying about her opposition to it — and the press should call her on it. Candidates these days seem to think that just repeating something over and over makes it true.
I agree with Obama: her family's off-limits, unless SHE chooses to make them an issue. Only she can make that choice; otherwise, back off. And faked photos, lies, etc are strictly not OK.
But if it IS true, and if it's about her record, her positions, or her opinions — that is absolutely fair game. That's exactly the stuff we should be talking about.
So: watch to see whether this "Truth Squad" comes out trying to convince us she really did always say "no thanks" to the bridge to nowhere. If so, their credibility is shot.
I cant handle this Sarah Palin hype anymore. Who cares about the Bridge to Nowhere and whether or not she tried to ban books. That has no effect on our current national situation. Lets stick to whats really important: Does anyone SERIOUSLY feel comfortable with this woman in the White House when she's only left the country ONCE? I literally have more foreign policy experience than she does! It's also no surprise that she hasnt done an interview yet....the woman has nothing to say except the same lines she used in her acceptance speech. She is going to have to prep for weeks in order to face Joe Biden, who actually HAS foreign policy experience.
We have the highest unemployment rate in five years. We are struggling to conduct wars in 2 countries, home ownership is in the trash and all that people care about is Sarah Palin's personal chef and her private jett on ebay. Sarah Palin is as much a distraction from the real issues as Iraq was from the real threat in Afghanistan.
So far the "Truth Squad" is doing nothing but creating lies. Accusing Obama of referring to Palin when he used the term "like putting lipstick on a pig” in regards to McCain’s "CHANGE" he will bring to Washington. They are clearly trying to CREATE issues out of nothing to take the focus off of the facts that McCain has no plans other then trying to win and Palin is grossly inexperienced for the position she is seeking.
A Truth Squad, specializes in smearing lipstick on a pig...and calling it a gazelle.
The Obama comparison of Palin to a pig was deliberate considering her lipstick-pittbull joke. There was also a very nasty component to Obama's "joke".His reference to stinking fish was a subtle reference to her female anatomy intended to give men a private laugh.I find it offensive and it reveals a hateful sexist side of Obama that the " Good Old Boys" in politics will like.

Former ACTING Governor of Mass. Jane Swift and truth. Swift admitted to hiding the truth about her future husband on their marriage license. On the marriage application, her husband to be did not list any of his previous marriages. This also denies Swifts' husband's children from previous marriages.
Swift says they hid the truth about the previous marriages because she thought it would look bad politically. Swift might be right about that, but it does not excuse falsely submitting a legal document? Is Swift telling the truth here? What might look much worse politically is Swift having to admit she did not she did not know the truth about her husband's previous marriages and children, if that is the truth.
Consult a divorce/child custody lawyer about the ramifications of non-disclosure of previous marriages, children, and heirs.
Wher was the outrage when Mc Cane said the same thing about Sen. Clinton?
Jane Swift, She has to be the most appropreate spoksperson for the "Un Truth "squard. Liers attract Liers.
This point has to be made.
Couldn't the Republicans find someone who was a littler more believable?
This is absurdly funny.
The McCain campaign and Palin herself are guilty of telling some of the most egregious, quarter truths out there about Obama--enlisting the GOP attack dogs like Guliani and Thompson to vilify and use every dirty trick in the book to discredit the Obama-Biden ticket and THEY are forming a TRUTH SQUAD???
Palin is STILL lying about the bridge to nowhere in every speech she gives!
This is truly high comedy.
The GOP is playing the same, tired script to the same ignorant electorate they rely on every election to "vote for 'merica!"
McCain used to have honor. Now he has none.
Sounds more like a Karl Rove Jane "Swift Boat"
Why doesn't Obama have a news conference and challenge the media to vet Sarah Palin? This will give him front page coverage on the evening news, and it would pressure the media to pressure the Mccain campaign to give access Ms Palin for news conferences to answer tough questions!!
"On the other hand, the accusation that she was before the "bridge to nowhere" before she was against it? That's absolutely true. She's been half-lying about her opposition to it — and the press should call her on it. Candidates these days seem to think that just repeating something over and over makes it true."
Paul from Minnesota, please do your homework. There is more to this story and it involves Obama AND Biden. These two, who have repeatedly brought up the Bridge to Nowhere, voted for this bridge not once, but twice. In fact, when given the opportunity to funnel the funds for this bridge to Hurricane Katrina relief, both Obama and Biden voted for the Bridge. IN 2005. When did Palin become Governor? 2006. She may have been for it, until she saw how expensive it was going to be for her state and shot it down. So essentially, she did say thanks but no thanks on the Bridge to Nowhere, while Obama and Biden wanted to waste the money on it instead of helping Katrina victims.
I am embarrassed to consider myself a Republican when I see the remarks of Gov. Swift regarding Obama's lipstick on the pig comment. To suggest that he is speaking of Gov. Palin is just a gross distortion of common sense. If she and others in our party believe that comment was a slight to the Governor from Alaska then we are in big trouble. It is obvious that some of our politicians don't have any sense, common or otherwise. Seeing this partisan mud slinging is like watching the intrigues of a high school student government election. I suppose if it rains someone should call Gov. Swift inside because it appears she doesn't have enough sense to come in on her own. I despair because when we need statesmen at best it appears we are stuck with regular old politicians. There are no mavericks in our party just people who claim they are when they see the writing of tired constituents on the wall.

You are totally wacked out. If you want to make connections where there are none be my guest. But I suggest you do your venting in private so your inane thinking is not on display for all to see.
If these Republicans would spend 1/10 of the energy they devote to creating a new generation of Swift Boat smear campaigns to actually trying to govern with integrity and dignity, then maybe McCain would not need to run AGAINST the last 8 years of Republican control of the Executive branch. And this is coming from a (former) moderate Republican who voted FOR Bush in 2000.
News Flash - if she was allowed to talk - you would not have to waste your time on a truth squad.
This group is totally insane.
McCain can vote against Equal pay for Equal work for women yet no one calls him a sexist?! I guess this election is not about issues after all, we'd rather debate lipstick jokes that many have used BEFORE Sarah Palin.
Repubs left me: Insulting a person personally and unnecessarily generally calls into question the insulter's credibility. I'll consider the source.I'am not the one wacked out enough to vote for a socialist Chicago politician with no executive experience that insults small town people that cling to religion and calls women reporters "sweety" then ignores them .Iam glad you have the intelligence to see the connection Obama "didnt make" with his stinky fish remark .McCain is not Bush by any means and the polls are showing that people are beginning to figure that out and thanks to "wacked out" people like me they are finding out about Obama. You couldnt do any better than "wacked out"? Obama made those comments and when you make nasty remarks like that you deserve the worst interpretations.

You can put lipstick on McCain, but you still have a bush!
