McCain speech more watched than Obama's, Nielsen says

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor September 5, 2008 02:46 PM

John McCain's acceptance speech may not be getting the rave reviews of his Democratic rival Barack Obama's.

But more people watched on TVs measured by Nielsen Media Research.

Nielsen reported this afternoon that an estimated 38.9 million people -- a record -- watched McCain's acceptance speech Thursday night on the three broadcast networks, plus CNN, FOX News Channel, and MSNBC, compared to 38.4 million who watched Obama's speech last week, which was carried on four other cable networks as well.

McCain even drew a bigger audience than his running mate, Sarah Palin, who drew about 37 million for her speech Wednesday night.

The usual gender and racial gap in elections showed up in the figures. Significantly more men (17.9 million) watched McCain than Obama (16.2 million), while more women watched Obama (19.9 million) than McCain (19.2 million), Nielsen said. Also, more whites watched McCain (32.2 million) than Obama (27 million), while the opposite held among African Americans with 7.5 million watching Obama and 3.1 million watching McCain.

When PBS is included, McCain's and Obama's viewerships are nearly equal.

PBS, which compiles its figures separately, said that about 2.7 million tuned in for its coverage Thursday night -- down from 3.2 million for Palin and 3.5 million for Obama's acceptance speech.

That makes McCain's total audience nearly 41 million, compared to nearly 42 million for Obama and about 40 million for Palin.

.

hi i would just like to tell you that your math is wrong. with those stats it seems obama received .3 million more viewers (including pbs)

Now with all those viewers all we heard was POW, POW, POW, POW, POW, POW, POW. All I wanted to hear was what was he going to do about, little things, like Economy, Jobless and my 401K going down the toilet. So, After watching that SNOOZEFEST, I regret not watching a more enlightening program, like the reruns of Project Runway.

You're a typical liberal moron. Gee, it can't be that as many people wanted to hear what McCain had to say right? There has to be some other reason...HAS TO BE!!!

Face facts meathead.....the Mesiah is falling down to earth and the REAL leader is climbing. You're stuck with Republicans for at least 4 more years. Sucks for you doesn't it?

The Anchorage Daily News

Palin's stall
Governor is stonewalling the Troopergate investigation

(09/05/08 00:11:45)
Gov. Sarah Palin is taking the wrong approach to Troopergate. She should be practicing the open and transparent, ethical and accountable government she promised when running for governor and boasts about now that she's on the national stage.
Instead, Gov. Palin has begun stonewalling the Legislature's attempt to get the bottom of allegations that she, her family or staff violated ethical or state personnel rules.
As a result, the Troopergate allegations hang over Palin's future and cloud her candidacy for vice president.
The allegations are that she, her family or administration improperly pressured then-Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan to fire Gov. Palin's ex-brother-in-law, state trooper Mike Wooten, who had been in the middle of a custody dispute with Palin's sister.
In July, when legislators started talking about conducting an investigation, Palin denied any wrongdoing and said she welcomed an investigation.
"Hold me accountable," she said.
The Legislature took her up on that offer. But this week, she basically told the Legislature, "Never mind."
Palin's lawyer has asked the Legislature to drop its investigation. He had the governor file an ethics complaint against herself, in a bid to turn the entire matter over to the state Personnel Board, which would hire an independent investigator.
This is not an open and transparent attempt to establish Gov. Palin's accountability. It is an attempt to drag out the investigation until after voters decide the fate of her vice-presidential bid.
Instead, Gov. Palin should honor her pledge to cooperate with the Legislature's investigation, conducted by former state prosecutor Steve Branchflower.
She could start by telling aide Frank Bailey he has to talk to the legislative investigator. She should fire him if he doesn't.
Bailey was caught on an audio recording of a phone conversation with a Public Safety Department official, in which Bailey pushed to get Wooten fired.
Bailey was put on paid leave, not fired. A spokeswoman for Palin said that while Bailey is on the state payroll, Palin can direct him to cooperate with the legislative investigation.
So why is Bailey still on the payroll, after he bailed on a scheduled interview with the legislative investigator Wednesday?
The Legislature hasn't given its investigator the power to subpoena, or compel, testimony of witnesses. Subpoenas appeared unnecessary, since it appeared the governor and administration would be cooperating.
That's over. It's time for the subpoenas.
The Legislature's investigation is supposed to be wrapped up by Oct. 31. That's obviously poor timing from the standpoint of the McCain-Palin presidential campaign, coming just a few days before the national election.
Instead of trying to delay the whole thing, Palin should take a cue from U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens, who asked that his corruption trial be moved up so it would be completed well ahead of the November general election. Voters deserve to know the outcome of Sen. Stevens trial and the investigation into Palin.
When this investigation into Troopergate started, Gov. Palin's response was refreshingly open. Since she became the Republican candidate for vice president, her approach has changed for the worse. America deserves the same openness and ethics from vice-presidential candidate Palin that she promised to Alaska voters in 2006.
BOTTOM LINE: Gov. Palin is stonewalling on Troopergate; the Legislature should issue subpoenas.
________________________________________
'Threat'?
Palin's lawyer tries to play Secret Service card
Gov. Sarah Palin's lawyer, Thomas Van Flein, made an absurd threat in his battle to get the Legislature to back off its ethics investigation of the governor and her staff.
Van Flein said legislative investigator Steve Branchflower tried to call First Gentleman Todd Palin directly on "a secure and confidential line. This represents a serious security breach that we may be obligated to report to the Secret Service."
Hello? Branchflower is acting on behalf of the Legislature. That's a security breach?
Lawyers are supposed to vigorously represent their clients, but claiming that a legislative investigator's phone call may be a security matter worthy of Secret Service attention is ridiculous.
Gov. Palin should keep her legal attack dog on a shorter leash.
BOTTOM LINE: More obstruction from Palin in Troopergate.

The report mentions the number of people who tuned in to watch McCain's acceptance speech - but it doesn't talk about the number who fell asleep while watching ! I thought it was only me, but except for two people in my workplace, none of my colleagues were able to stay awake through the speech. McCain is a likable guy and I wouldn't mind having him as a neighbor - but if elected it will history repeating itself, like the re-election of GWB in 2004.

With regard to the "pitlip with bullstick" - I turned the tube off when the smallness of her mind was revealed in all its glory - the petty sarcasm, the fake/cheap humor, the "small town values" (whatever that means), the blatant distortion of facts, the half truths (her 'success story' about the "bridge to nowhere" which she was fully in favor of till it became wildly unpopular - then she axed it but conveniently did not remember to return the federal funds allocated)

These numbers are not at all surprising considering the number of Democratic voters that watched the convention. This is more evidence that Repubs tuned out Obama's speech. Democrats, being the more informed and educated of the two parties, naturally want to hear both conventions so that they can make better decisions regarding the campaign. The same cannot be said of the neocons whom are fearful of Obama.

Twas 3 days before Christmas, 2012, and all through the WhiteHouse, not a creature was stirring, they'd all long since been fired for blasphemy. Only President Palin sat alone in the large Oval Office, sitting at her desk pondering all the wonderful accomplishments over the past few years.

Old President McCain had long since passed away, he lasted barely 3 months into his administration before cancer finally overtook him. So much had changed since then in the United Theocracy of America. Her loving supporters cheered wildly as she appointed the nations newest members of the Supreme Court: James Dobson, Pat Buchanan and her own pastor from the Assembly of God church in Wasilla. It took only two weeks to overturn Roe vs. Wade with all 3 new justices, along with Alito, Scalia and Roberts united in it's demise.

The filthy liberals cried out in protest, but to their own dismay, they learned that criticizing Palin's policies was a one way ticket to the new privatized Halliburton built prisons, built on their behalf. This made the 2012 elections SO much easier she chuckled to herself, why hadn't we thought of this before?

This also made it very easy to rewrite the Constitution to fit her agenda. No need for freedom of religion with only ONE state religion - Pentacostal Dominionism. All across the land one could hear the joyous sound of men and women "speaking in tongues". Medicare was abolished, along with Social Security. Faith Healing took it's place, and the stock markets had long since crashed and wiped out the privatized funds.

Why had the markets crashed? The only employment left were $2/hr positions (ha, minimum wage legislation was easy to defeat). A few CEOs were left to manage the corporations that had not already been sold to China. But since nobody could afford to buy anything beyond the basic essentials, the economy was deeply mired in a depression that made the 1930s look like "the good ol' days".

With a gallon of gas at $140/gallon, few could drive to work anyway. Who would have thought that "Operation Drill, Baby Drill" would take so long? And that so little oil remained within the US (well, the liberals and scientists knew this, but nobody paid them any attention - science had long since been banned). The belated President McCain, even before assuming his post, had voted against all forms of alternative energy and it was too late now to adopt it with energy prices so high. Nobody noticed that he had neglected to follow his campaign promises on this matter. "Drill baby drill" was the rallying cry!

All the offensive books had long sense been purged now that she had the power to do on a massive scale what she started as a mayor in Wasila. No More Harry Potter!, they all rejoiced. The United Theocracy's population initially exploded due to strict laws that called for the execution of all those making less than $1,000,000/year that were convicted of aborting their unwanted pregnancies. However, with no gun control laws, and people starving and freezing to death across the nation, "survival of the fittest" weeded out all but the strongest and wealthiest.

The "Holy War on the Middle East" didn't even require a draft, the choices were simple, starve or enlist and many chose to enlist. Only one thing remained to be done. Her church had taught her all her life that End Times would be a blessing to the whole world and that only Alaska would remain as a final refuge to the True Believers. And now it was time, 12/21/2012 at high noon. With a contented sigh she entered the codes into the system linked to the nation's nuclear arsenal of 150,000 nuclear warheads. Proclaiming "Jesus come on back!", she pressed the button and watched as thousands of missiles across the nation streaked into the air as her supporters cried "YEEEEEE HAAAAAA!!! That'll teach em to mess with the good ol' United Theocracy of America!!!"

THE END. DEFINITELY, THE END. THINK BEFORE YOU VOTE.

I watched McCain ... had to force myself ... same old Repub garbage ... wrapped in the flag - USA, USA chanting ... and when are they going to stop talking about his Vietnam experience - that's ancient history, and so is Palin's high school basketball. That and $5.00 would get them a latte at Starbucks. Neither one of them are half as qualified as Obama and Biden to lead this nation out of the first-class mess created by the Repubs beginning with Reagan.

I suspect a lot of Dems watched, just like I did ... but then, that's 250 million who didn't - now that's an issue.

Hats off to Obama and Biden for raising the issues and calling us to think ... that's more than the canned rhetoric of the "pitbull with lipstick" and poor old John McCain who can't remember anything beyond his Vietnam experience - reminds me of a local Veterans of Foreign Wars dinner - lots of memories. But we need more than memories; we need fresh ideas and younger leadership. Obama meets both!

CSPAN wasn't included in any of these totals. It's likely more Dems are watching CSPAN than Reps. Here is a economic lesson for you. We had 57 straight months of job growth before the past 5 or 6 months. Currently at 6.1 % unemployment we still are not so bad. Below is the quarterly averages from the Clinton Years to the Bush Years. Clinton years as you can see we were dropping throughout and with Bush we have gone from all time lows of 3.9 o a high of 6.1. It is not a time to panic yet but a time to make some reforms. Understand Clinton's years were great. The internet became the boom and that led to millions of jobs. But in the past 7 years we have been dealing with things Clinton never dealt with (9.11, War on Terror).

Both of these views have lessened Americans standing in the world while providing companies with only a short term solution to keep profits high, by outsourcing workers and replacing quality, and ethical solutions with cheap and unethical Chinese ones.

I am sorry, but I for one like it when Obama says that we need to reward companies who keep jobs in America. That to me is a conservative value. Lets bring the tariffs of the Regan era back, to give quality and safe us goods a chance, not to mention save the American quality of life which is quickly eroding!

I'm betting that OBAMA had the larger audience, but Nielson numbers don't reflect this because the younger generation of voters isn't tracked by Nielsen as well. As with telephone polls which depend on landline telephone number, the gathering mechanism can't account for today's wired younger generation :

Considering NBC led with the first NFL telecast of the 2008 season, featuring the Super Bowl champion New York Giants, I'd bet that had a LOT to do with a built-in viewership. McCain spoke almost immediately AFTER the last seconds ticked off the clock.

I am very surprised by this. I thought that having the RNC so close after the DNC would hurt their ratings largely because people would be tired of listening to pols blab on and on. I also honestly believed that the DNC put on a tough act to follow with great speeches by the Clintons and Obama.

Then came the Republicans and they made the DNC look like it was put together by pre-schoolers. They pick the first female VP that no one including Democrats knew of and throw in a hurricane in the middle for good measure.
Basically, I do think that the majority of the country does want to vote for Obama, but does not have faith in him. That causes them to re-examine McCain, thus the larger ratings. The only way that Obama can get elected is if the people are willing to take a leap of faith. Once they start to give too much weight to his lack of experience, it's ovah!

Republicans and their followers are fiercely loyal to the Grand old party, they have the tendency to put the blinders on and watch only the RNC...Go ask 20 republicans you know if they watched the DNC....or even Obama's speech for that matter....it will explain why the viewership was so close...

Our task at hand, as supporters of Obama's great ideas and the new direction is to learn as much about both sides as possible, and reach out to our republican friends...and really explain how this election is different. This is what it's going to take to unite our country.

Like Obama said, the Republicans know how to win elections....all we can do is to learn as much about

I love it..Obama speech given when people traditionally go on vacation. Please... People don't watch TV on vacation. Maybe not. But opening day in the NFL plus coverage of hurricane Gustav is never mentioned as potentially taking away viewers of Mccain/Palin.

Elitists beware!

Sarah Palin is now anti semetic? Given her and her parties support to Israel.
If Palin is anti semetic then I guess that makes Obama an islamic jihadist

Yes, it seems Foon Rhee doesn’t know basic addition, as many have pointed out. Perhaps this is the result of a “no child left behind” education?

I consider myself a progressive, but I must admit I agree wholeheartedly with JAck #26. So maybe I’m a conservative in disguise…

I too believe in conserving American jobs by keeping them in the United States, and to that add, conserving American income by lowering income taxes on the middle class and raising them on the rich (who can well afford it). Conserving the environment, by aggressively seeking alternative renewable energy sources. Conserving a woman’s right to choose her reproductive choices, not mine. Conserving all the books in a library regardless if I agree with their content or not. Conserving human life by ending an unjustifiable war and using diplomacy when ever possible to prevent war. I could go on with “progressive” ways to conserve, but this is enough for now.

Think I’ll get out my calculator, check my addition, rest assured Neilson will never call my cell phone (#28), and contemplate this:

Jesus was a community organizer, Pontius Pilot was a Governor… thank goodness our politicians are neither… but Pilot, gettin’ close.

I agree #69. The repubs were hoping to have at least a good explanation presented to them, and they got the sonny & cher show. No matter - all that tv time just confirmed 1) he is really old and will say anything to get elected, and 2) she is really uneducated and unqualified. Don't worry Palin family, mama isn't going to have to uproot you and move across the continent any time soon.

Love all the venom from the liberals on this board and from their lapdogs in the media. What's a matter? Your Messiah now having a little trouble on way to the coronation? He can't close the deal? Bumming that the GOP actually has a female candidate that looks good in a dress and high heals and can give a decent speech? I don't blame you....I'd be overcome with fear too. You're running in a year with a difficult economy and an unpopular war and you're still only 50/50 in the polls because you ran a fundamentally flawed, ultra liberal candidate who's governing experience is as deep as a puddle. That junk worked in the liberal bastion of Mass with Deval "property tax relief for all" Patrick but, unfortunately for you, "real America" sees right through this BS. You just should have nominated Hillary and she would have cruised to victory in November. But....NOOOOOOO. She wasn't liberal enough for you.

Regardless of the headline being wrong, it's nice to know that 40ish million people witnessed a mean-spirited speech by Palin, a "I was a POW, so vote for me" speech by McCain, and a speech with vision for the country by Obama.

The Polls for the Number of Viewers Watching the Speeches of the Candidates are Meaningless.

The number of viewers watching the speeches is more about pollsters gathering information to make money for their respective employers. It is not an indicator of voter preference. I support Obama and chose to pick up the high points of his speech on the Internet the next day. I did watch Palin and McCain because I wanted them to convince me to vote for them.

They didn't.

Latest polls, that don't include McCain's speech impact, show a tie. Tie means Obama is losing big time. You know that there are whites who say they support Obama, who will wake up to the danger he poses when it becomes time to pull the lever. At this time, in the past, when the democrat candidate has had the lead, he lost. Imagine the wipe out these numbers portend. Democrats who love country more than party are crossing over. The only "yellow dogs" left are the blacks who will vote color first, country last.

I'm sick of all this Obama nonsense. He's a socialist plain and simple. Just cause he doesn't come right out and say "I'm a socialist" doesn't mean he isn't one. In case you don't know what a socialist is here is the definition from webster's dictionary: 1: one who advocates or practices socialism 2capitalized : a member of a party or political group advocating socialism. I have not seen one article linking McCain to socialistic practices. He has more heart then Obama has in his little pinky. Let's not forget that Obama was a "community organizer" which is code word for socialism. Stop listening to an idiot who is feeding you crap. McCain's speach was so great last night. I believe he will help the people and not Washington. Because its the people who pay the salaries of politicians in Washington.

No. 11.............. I, too, believe one should know his/her enemy, so I read both of Barack Hussein Obama's books and it is very plain that he does not like white people. At least he did admit in the books that he was a cocaine used and drank heavily. I wonder why he has such a fixation on his radical father who deserted him at a young age, visited him while Barack Hussein Obama, Jr. was living with his radical Muslim step father in Indonesia for about a month? His title of his book "Dreams From My Father" should be analyzed by professionals.

I am aghast at the obvious racist comments that have been allowed to be posted. This race is not about the color or sex of the candidates. Rather, it is about the qualifications and visions of the candidates. It is hard to believe that the candidate of the incumbent party will be able to evoke any change. Oil is still over $100 per barrel, gas is still close to $4.00 a gallon and hard working middle class Americans are losing their homes due to foreclosures, all of which have been caused by the atrocious economic policies of the current administration. Ask yourselves one question as Ronal Regan did some years ago - "Are you better off than you were four years ago?" If not, your choice will be a simple one. The only political party that presided over the largest peace-time expansion of the U.S. economy was a Democratic administration.

Now that both running mates have been chosen and the presidential election heats up American's are left to sort out which candidates will better address the ever burdening issue of the energy crisis in America. The energy crisis is directly linked to our economy. Foreclosures are on the rise as well as unemployment. With all the technology available it is incredible to believe we have not come together as a nation to devise a plan. We have become so dependant on foreign oil that we have neglected to fully utilize such natural sources of energy such wind power & solar power. Along with modern technology such as plug in cars, hybrid cars, v2g technology ,and regenerative braking, technology we still seem to be floundering as a nation as to devising the best plan utilize all that is available to us and lift ourselves out of this mess we are in.

McCain believes in helping people when they need it but at the same time helping them BETTER THEMSELVES.. the Democrats just say... HERE YA GO BUDDY.. your taxpaying neighbors paid for your FREE RIDE...

I'm so sick of Democrats!!!!!!!!!!! And NO I'm NOT a Republican.. I'm an Independent who knows HOW BAD OBAMA WILL DESTROY THIS COUNTRY!!!!!!!

I'm a Democrat, and I watched all 3 nights, as I'm sure many Republicans also watched the DNC speeches. It doesn't matter what the Nielsen ratings were for either party was. The only thing it really shows is that a lot more people are tuning in to this election than every before.

It's actually good that many people saw McCain's speech, and saw how perplexing their message is. There will be a lot of American's (mostly Republicans) that will have quick memory loss, in the fact that McCain's party is the one that had control of the "Washington" that they speak of reforming. But there will also be millions of people that will be rational enough to see through the transperancy of the GOP's message, and see how absurd this whole GOP message is. I just hope our country has finally learned it's huge mistake of re-electing George Bush to a second term, and not let this non-sense continue.

Let's get something right. Nielsen a right-wing measuring systems fails to mention that McCain's acceptance speech Thursday night was on a total of 8 broadcast networks and Obama's speech last week was only on a total of 4 broadcast networks and all 4 are cable network. Not all American have cable. In general if Obama's speech were on all 8 broadcast networks like McCain's acceptance speech he would probably have about 60.5 million people.

BTW, the broadcast industry knows the Nielsen Media Research is only in business because it's an old boy company. How are you going to measured an entire country with less than 2% of the country.

I am not likeing ether one. I watched both conventions, I tend to be more conservative, but this election is terrible. All you hear from Obama is change with out him actually saying whats that he will change. All you hear from McCain is I was POW.

I do wish for change but the right kind of change. Obamas change is not really the change I am looking for. And now McCain has hopped on the ban wagon of "change". McCains kind of change is some what better then Obamas, Unlike Obama McCain wants to actually win the war.

But MCcain also like Obama dose not really tell us what he wants to change, besides saying he needs to change Washington. I agree Washington needs change, but is McCain reall the right one to bring about change?

I do hold more conservative views on abortion and smaller government. But I also hold liberal views. I am stuck, my views are the most un-biased views. I can not have bias views this election because I hate both McCain and Obamas politicals about the same.

Doesn't necessarily mean as much as you might think.

A large portion of Obama's support comes from people my age and most of us probably got highlights through internet videos, like Youtube or elsewhere, I know I did.

Honestly, though I wouldn't be surprised if Obama looses. Republicans are better practiced at spreading misinformation (the book "the Obama Nation", for one) and fear-mongering (like calling him 'Barack Hussein Obama' without the "jr." Wow! People watched McCain? Of course they did! He's a candidate for the Presidency! This is a GOOD thing and means that Americans are interested again. Believe me, I know the conservative right can be polarizing but the left wing isn't much better. It's ok if people support McCain and Palin JUST like it's ok if people support Obama and Biden. I'm a registered Democrat and have no problem admitting that John McCain and Sarah Palin did a fantastic job. Instead we get childish poems on this blog from people who are self proclaimed political know it alls. Sarah Palin and her views are not the problem. Obama and William Ayers are not the problem. YOU are the problem. YOU are the polarizing force that forces that average American away from politcs with your rants and complete disregard for the finer points of your opposition. It's absolutely true, blacks will vote as a block for Obama purely along racial lines. That readers is called racism in its purest and ugliest form.

Here's today's reply by Oprah Winfrey to the rumors she is blocking Gov. Sarah Palin from giving an interview on her show:

"At the beginning of this presidential campaign when I decided that I was going to take my first public stance in support of a candidate, I made the decision not to use my show as a platform for any of the candidates. I agree that Sarah Palin would be a fantastic interview, and I would love to have her on after the campaign is over."

That said, Winfrey used her show to introduce Barack Obama to America's women voters, and has endorsed and campaigned with the Democratic nominee. She also was very visible at Obama's acceptance speech last week in Denver. Oprah and her executive producer Sheri Salata are big contributors to Obama's campaign.

Oprah Winfrey is obviously THE MOST racist person in the television industry!

I'm an open-minded Democrat but the way my party (and surrogates) is handling this election especially after the "enemy" chose Gov Sarah Palin as their VP candidate is absolutely disgusting. I now know where my vote is NOT going to go to in November. My vote will be one against the Obama/Palin ticket and not necessary for the other choice.

Alaskans Speak (In A Frightened Whisper): Palin Is “Racist, Sexist, Vindictive And Mean.”
“So Sambo beat the bitch!”

This is how Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin described Barack Obama’s win over Hillary Clinton to political colleagues in a restaurant a few days after Obama locked up the Democratic Party presidential nomination.

According to Lucille, the waitress serving her table at the time and who asked that her last name not be used, Gov. Palin was eating lunch with five or six people when the subject of the Democrat’s primary battle came up. The governor, seemingly not caring that people at nearby tables would likely hear her, uttered the slur and then laughed loudly as her meal mates joined in appreciatively.

“It was kind of disgusting,” Lucille, who is part Aboriginal, said in a phone interview after admitting that she is frightened of being discovered telling folks in the “lower 48” about life near the North Pole.

Then, almost with a sigh, she added, “But that’s just Alaska.”

Racial and ethnic slurs may be “just Alaska” and, clearly, they are common, everyday chatter for Palin.

Besides insulting Obama with a Step-N’-Fetch-It, “darkie musical” swipe, people who know her say she refers regularly to Alaska’s aboriginal people as “Artic Arabs” – how efficient, lumping two apparently undesirable groups into one ugly description – as well as the more colourful “mukluks” along with the totally unimaginative “fucking Eskimo’s,” according to a number of Alaskans and Wasillians interviewed for this article.

But being openly racist is only the tip of the Palin iceberg. According to Alaskans interviewed for this article, she is also vindictive and mean. We’re talking Rove mean and Nixon vindictive.

No wonder the vast sea of white, cheering faces at the Republican Convention went wild for Sarah: They adore the type, it’s in their genetic code. So much for McCain’s pledge of a “high road” campaign; Palin is incapable of being part of one.

It’s not easy getting people in the 49th state to speak critically about Palin – especially people in Wasilla, where she was mayor. For one thing, with every journalist in the world calling, phone lines into Alaska have been mostly jammed since Friday; as often as not, a recording told me that “all circuits are busy” or numbers just wouldn’t ring. I should think a state that’s been made richer than God by oil could afford telephone lines and cell towers for everyone.

On a more practical level, many people in Alaska, and particularly Wasilla, are reluctant to speak or be quoted by name because they’re afraid of her as well as the state Republican Party machine. Apparently, the power elite are as mean as the winters.

“The GOP is kind of like organized crime up here,” an insurance agent in Anchorage who knows the Palin family, explained. “It’s corrupt and arrogant. They’re all rich because they do private sweetheart deals with the oil companies, and they can destroy anyone. And they will, if they have to.

“Once Palin became mayor,” he continued, “She became part of that inner circle.”

Like most other people interviewed, he didn’t want his name used out of fear of retribution. Maybe it’s the long winter nights where you don’t see the sun for months that makes people feel as if they’re under constant danger from “the authorities.” As I interviewed residents it began sounding as if living in Alaska controlled by the state Republican Party is like living in the old Soviet Union: See nothing that’s happening, say nothing offensive, and the political commissars leave you alone. But speak out and you get disappeared into a gulag north of the Arctic Circle for who-knows-how-long.

Alright, that’s an exaggeration brought on by my getting too little sleep and building too much anger as I worked this article. But there’s ample evidence of Palin’s vindictive willingness to destroy people she sees as opponents. Just ask the Wasilla town administrator she hired before firing him because he rebelled against the way Palin demanded he do his job, or the town librarian who refused to hold the book burning Walpurgisnach Mayor Palin demanded.

Ironically, Palin was pushed into hiring the administrator by the party poo-bah’s who helped get her elected after she got herself into trouble over a number of precipitous firings which gave rise to a recall campaign.

“People who fought her attempt to oust the librarian are on her enemies list to this day,” states Anne Kilkenny, a Wasilla resident and one of the few Alaskans willing to speak on-the-record, for attribution, about Palin. In fact, Kilkenny actually circulated an e-mail letter about Palin that was verified and printed by The Nation.

For good measure, Palin booted the Wasilla police chief from office because, she told a local newspaper, he “intimidated” her.

Sarah Palin drew early attention from state GOP apparatchiks when, during her first mayoral campaign, she ran on an anti-abortion platform. Normally, political parties do not get involved in Alaskan municipal elections because they are non-partisan. But once word of her extreme fringe evangelical views made its way to Juneau, the state capitol, state Republicans tossed some money behind her campaign.

Once in office, Palin set out to build a machine that chewed up anyone who got in her way. The good, Godly Christian turns out to be anything but.

“She's doesn’t like different opinions and she refuses to compromise,” Kilkenny notes. “When she was Mayor, she fought ideas that weren't hers. Worse, ideas weren't evaluated on their merits but on the basis of who proposed them.”

Sound familiar? Palin may well be Dick Cheney’s reincarnate.

Something else has a familiar Republican ring to it: Her tax policies, and a “refund surpluses but borrow for the future” attitude.

According to Kilkenny and others in Wasilla as well as Juneau, Palin reduced progressive property taxes for businesses while mayor and increased a regressive sales tax which even hits necessities such as food. The tax cuts she promoted in her St. Paul speech actually benefited large corporate property owners far more than they benefited residents. Indeed, Kilkenny insists that many Wasilla home owners actually saw their tax bill skyrocket to make up for the shortfall. Two other Wasillian’s with whom I spoke said property taxes on their modest, three bedroom homes rose during the Palin regime.

To an outsider, it would seem hard to do, but an oil-rich town with zero debt on the day she was inaugurated mayor was left saddled with $22-million of debt by the time she moved away to become governor – especially since nothing was spent on things such as improving the city’s infrastructure or building a much-needed sewage treatment plant. So what did Mayor Palin spend the taxpayer’s money on, if not fixing streets and scrubbing sewage?

For starters, she modelled her office. Several times over, as a matter of fact.

Then Palin spent $1-million on an unnecessary, new park that no one other than the contractors and Palin seemed to want. Next, Sarah doled out more than $15-million of taxpayer money for a sports complex that she shoved through even though the city did not own clear title to the land; now, seven years later, the matter is still in litigation and lawyer fees are said to be close to at least half of the original estimated price of the facility.

She also worked hard to get voters approval of a $5.5-million bond proposal for roads that could have been built without borrowing. Anchorage may not be the center of the financial universe but, like good Republicans everywhere, Sarah Palin knows how to please Alaskan bankers and bond dealers.

For good measure, she turned Wasilla into a wasteland of big box stores and disconnected parking lots.

En route to the governor’s igloo, Palin managed to land what Anne Kilkenny says is the plumb political appointment in the state: Chair of Alaska’s Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (OGCC), a $122,400 per year patronage slot with no real authority to do anything other than hold meetings. She took the job despite having no background in energy issues and, as it turned out, not liking the work.

“She hated the job,” an OGCC staff member who is not authorized to speak with the news media told me. “She hated the hours and she hated what little work there was to do. But she couldn’t figure out a way to get out of the thing without offending Gov. Murkowski” and the state Republican Party regulars, some of whom were pissed off they didn’t get appointed.

But ever the opportunist, Palin quickly concocted a way. First, she waged a campaign with the local news media claiming that the position was overpaid and should be abolished – despite the fact that she lobbied Murkowski hard to get it. Then, mounting what she saw as a white horse, Palin raised a cloud of dust by resigning from the OGCC and riding away with an undeserved reputation as a “reformer.”

But when a local reporter dared to suggest that the reformer Empress has no clothes, Palin tried to get her fired.

“She came at me like I was trying to steal her kids,” said the targeted reporter, who now works for an oil company in Anchorage. “I heard she had a wild temper and vicious mean streak but it’s nothing like you can imagine until she turns it on you.”

Not surprising since some of her high school classmates still openly call her “Sarah Barracuda,” Kilkenny insists.

Still, as a Republican Party hack Palin managed to get herself elected running under the false flag of a “reformer.”

And what did she bring to the job? No legislative experience other than a city council of a village of 5,000 people, which is smaller than some high schools in Chicago. Little hands-on supervisory or managerial experience; after all, she needed to hire a city administrator to run Wasilla. No executive experience, except for almost being recalled as mayor. A philosophy of setting public policy based on one word: No.

And what has she done since winning the job?

According to Kilkenny, nothing. Well, nothing other than suggesting the state’s multi-multi-million dollar, oil-generated surplus be distributed to residents and finance future state needs by borrowing money. Gee, doesn’t that sound precisely what George Bush did with the surplus he inherited from Bill Clinton in 2001 and we all know in what great shape Bush’s economic policies left the nation.

It may explain why, when asked by reporters including me what she thought about Palin being picked to be McCain’s running mate, her mother-in-law replied with a sardonic, “What has Sarah done to qualify her to be vice president?” Of course, when the woman – said by many I spoke with to be well-respected in Wasilla – was running to succeed Palin as mayor, Sarah refused to endorse her so that may explain the family tension.

As Governor, Palin gave the legislature no direction and budget guidelines, according to the chair of a legislative committee. But then she staged a huge grandstand play of line-item vetoing countless projects, calling them pork. “They were restored because of public outcry and legislative action,” the aide said. “She vetoed them mostly because she had no idea what they were or why they were important.”

But it was enough to get the McCain, who is mostly unobservant of the world around him anyway, to think Palin has a reputation as being "anti-pork".

In fact, Juneau observers note that Palin kept her hand stuck out as far as anyone for pork ladled out by indicted Sen. Ted Stevens. She only opposed the "bridge to nowhere" after it became clear that it would be politically unwise to keep supporting it, these same insiders assert. Then, Palin fell back on her old habits and publicly humiliated him for pork-barrel politics.

As for being “ready on day one” to be commander in chief, despite the repeated public claims she’s made, the Alaska National Guard commander said that, “she has made no command decisions, other than sending some troops to help fight a few brush fires and march in parades at county fairs.”

“Palin is a conniving, manipulative, asshole,” someone who thinks these are positive traits in a governor told me, summing up Palin’s tenure in Alaska state and local politics.

“She’s a bigot, a racist and a liar,” is the more blunt assessment of Arnold Gerstheimer who lived in Alaska until two years ago and is now a businessman in Idaho.

“Juneau is a small town, everybody knows everyone else,” he adds. “These stories about what she calls blacks and Eskimos, well, anyone not white and good looking actually, were around long before she became a glint in John McCain’s rheumy eyes. Why do I know they’re true? Because everyone who isn’t aboriginal or Indian in Alaska talks that way.”

“Sambo beat the bitch” may be everyday language up in the bush. Whether it – and the outlook, politics and worldview Palin reflects when she says such things in public – should be part of a presidential campaign is another thing altogether. The comment says as much about McCain as it does about Palin, and it says a lot of things about Americans who overlook such statements (as well as her record) and vote anyway for McCain.

Sadly I have my concerns as to many people voting for candidates for the wrong reasons. SOMEONE SHOULDNT BE ELECTED BECAUSE THEY ARE HOT OR BLACK OR A WAR VETERAN. WHEN WILL AMERICA LOOK AT THE ISSUES. Id love to have A woman in office but lets wait for the right woman. PAYLIN IS A SERIOUS THREAT TO WOMENS RIGHTS OVER THEIR BODIES, OUR ENVIROMENT AND SUCH A DISSTRACTION FROM THE CRISIS AT HAND OUR WORLD AND THE FUTURE OF THIS PLANET. OBAMA CHOOSE BIDDEN JUST ANOTHER SIGN OF OBAMAS SOUND JUDGEMENT AND INTELLIGENCE. My fears are like many peoples of the above Ive cited and I fear the race is close because we thrive on sensationalism. Hence the Paylin factor. We are forced to go beyond all are addictions and compulsions to media hype and address the issues. I did not hear the issues discussed at the Republican Convention. I was disturbed by this since the problems we face are in our face moment to moment. OBAMAS SPEAK MOVED ME TO TEARS AND HOPE HE CAN SEE THE PATH AHEAD. TIME WILL TELL. TIME IS ALSO OF THE ESSENCE WITH THE CHANGES THAT NEED TO OCCUR. I PRAYER FOR PEACE, AND I VOTE FOR OBAMA & BIDDEN. AFTERALL YOU CAN ONLY WATCH SO MANY EPISODES OF JERRY SPRINGER AND MEANWHILE AS THE PLANET WARMS AND THE OCEANS RISE THE MEDIA STORM OVER PAYLIN IS MISSING THE BIGGEST STORM EVER OUR FAILING ECONOMY AND OUR PLANET BEING FOREVER ALTERED. Even wealth cant stop a HURRICANE. I WISH THE BEST TO ALL THE CANDIDATES AND THAT THEY ALL END UP WHERE THEY ARE MEANT TO BE. OBAMA AND BIDDEN IN THE WHITE HOUSE, MCSAME ENJOYING HIS SENIOR YEARS IN BEAUTIFUL SEDONA, AND PAYLIN BACK IN ALASKA.

I watched some of McCain's and Palin's speeches too- like many others who watch a train wreck. I watched Obama because I wanted to- wouldn't have missed it- because I believe in him and what he can do for this troubled country of ours.
I want the media to start vetting McSame and Palin now. McSame has been getting a pass whenever he says POW. Palin is pathetic but dangerous as she is sarcastic and so nasty and that appeals to some. We have a right to know about McCain's connections to crime in Arizona- have heard that his father-in-law was a convicted felon. I want to know everything from the Keating 5 to his current financial interests in Georgia. These two are running for the highest offices in the US and yet the media is afraid to investigate or ask them tough questions. I think that everything, from their poor educational backgrounds to their personal messes to their public lives is fair game- the stakes are too high this time.

I am amazed at whoever said that the reason that more people watched the RNC was because it was after Labor Day. This really makes a lot of sense, especially since so many in the South had their eyes focused on the possibility of Hurricane Gustav hitting the coast.................I hope that our country will quit enabling people.
Each one of us is responsible for our own actions, unless disaster hits or we are too young or old to care for ourselves. We need a country that will hold all accountable for their actions!
May America continue to be "one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all"!!!!
