MoveOn.org ties McCain to lobbyists

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor September 16, 2008 12:18 PM

The latest independent advocacy group ad in the presidential race tries to tie lobbyists around John McCain's neck like so many albatrosses.

MoveOn.org, the antiwar group that supports Democrat Barack Obama, plans to double its advertising budget to $7 million. It is one of several ostensibly independent interest groups ramping up their activities with less than two months before Election Day.

In its new ad, the group capitalizes on McCain's habit of saying "My friends" over and over again during his stump speeches.

His friends, the ad claims, include 177 lobbyists with ties to his campaign, including a dozen for oil companies.

McCain's contributions from oil executives gushed after he came out for more offshore oil drilling, and he does not support needed solutions for long-term energy independence, the ad says.

"When it comes to gas prices, John McCain won't be taking care of you," the announcer says. "He'll be taking care of..." The ad then shows McCain saying, "My friends."

The Republican National Committee responded to the ad: “Barack Obama has ‘friends’ of his own, including unrepentant terrorist Bill Ayers who helped launch his political career, convicted felon Tony Rezko who helped purchase his home, and his campaign’s chief strategist who at one point had the biggest lobby contract in New York state. As Obama’s star starts to fade, his special-interest friends are responding to his campaign’s pleas for help,” Alex Conant, a RNC spokesman, said in a statement.

  1. Very accurate. Don't be fooled by the lies of McCain. A man who cheated on his wife and then married a sugar mommy is not be trusted with our country.

  1. Being friend with lobbyists must be bad try having one as your son.
Robert Hunter Biden (born February 4, 1970), second son of Delaware senior U.S. Senator Joseph R. Biden, is a founding partner of the lobbying firm Oldaker, Biden & Belair, LLP. He is also Vice Chairman of the Amtrak Board of Directors.

  1. McCain isn't a friend of mine either. Economically, he will keep taxes low for the people who pay .01% of their incomes in FICA while I pay more in FICA than I do in Federal taxes. I don't completely understand his health care plan but it seems that he will give tax breaks on the one hand and tax medical benifits on the other.

Morally, he left his 1st wife with 3 children to raise in his 40s for a young rich girl in her 20s. Ketting 5 aside, as a evangelical Christian father of six, married for 25 years, that isn't a guy that I can respect very much. If you can't stay with your wife and raise your kids, it doesn't matter what else you are able to accomplish in life.

  1. There are truths, half truths and untruths in most of the ads running for and by both candidates. If we can't trust them to rely on the truth in simple ads, how can we trust either of them to be truthful with the country once they obtain the brass ring? Do they have so little faith in Americans that they feel the need to, in some cases, outright lie? Do they think that we as Americans are not capable of making informed decisions when presented with the true facts? What ever happened to "the truth shall set you free"

Since when is MoveOn.org an independent group? Aren't they out there with ANSWER? You know that other communist (quite literally) group. Not that both sides aren't doing their fair share of biased reporting just as #2 said above. Regardless this ad doesn't address the issues at hand, just like McCain had asked Obama to join him and discuss all along, but because Obama says they haven't discussed it and blames McCain for such, it must be true... I mean OBAMA said... he says no wrong, right? Wrong.

I wonder how many Joe Biden has received support from in the 36 years he has been on Capital Hill. Keep digging MoveOn and you just might find some dirt on Joe and B.O.

  1. I am proud to be part of MoveOn.org because, through the contributions of many middle class people like myself (and I'm not talking about those "middle class" people who make more than $100,000 per year!), they are able to put out ads like this, challenging big money interests of major corporations that dominate so much of our politics. Obama truly has the interests of the middle class in mind; despite the lies the McCain camp is trying to promote, Obama supports a tax hike only on the top 5% of income earners in this country, and I think those making in excess of $300,000 per year can afford a slight tax hike. And what were Palin's words about the war in Iraq, about it being some kind of sacred mission about which she seems to know very little, to the point of thinking that Iraq actually attacked us on 9/11. McCain and Palin are pleased to keep spending billions upon billions of dollars in Iraq in a neverending war on terror while McCain himself has repeatedly mentioned his lack of any real knowledge of economic issues. I know that in the past Republicans have been worried about Democratic candidates, but this time it is really the other way around. With McCain's lack of knowledge on economic issues and his close ties to the lobbyists mentioned here and others as well, and with Palin's seeming complete lack of knowledge of foreign affairs, this is really a scary Repulican ticket--and this at a time when we are in a real economic crisis at home and still a real mess on the international scene which can only be solved through the kind of tough diplomacy that Obama / Biden propose. Go to youtube and watch Obama discuss economics and international affairs with Fox's O'Reilly and tell me that this isn't the man you want for president.

  1. Well Skip... 177 to 1 seems like a "fair" mix right? But recall that Joe Biden has said that while his son did in fact found that firm, he does not even see his son on any official business.

But the truth of the matter is that McCain is SO entrenched with lobbyists and 26 years in Washington is probably too long for any elected official. If they are worth their salt, they will be consulted long after they are removed from the trappings of congress.

And Thomas... you're entirely right. John McCain came home to find his beautiful former model wife disfigured and handicapped so he proceeded to cheat on her for six years and then found Cindy Hemsley, a very attractive 17 year-old kid that "he fell in love with" and married even though she was 18 years his junior! I wonder how the religious right feels about that?

John McCaine's plan to tax employee health care benefits so that companies can feel free to drop the coverage, thereby lowering costs is a great example of how well John McCaine treats his real friends and what we can expect from a McCaine presidency.

Do you honestly believe that Obama can lower taxes for most Americans while only giving 5% of Americans a SLIGHT tax hike?

Even if Obama didn't continually lie and mislead in his advertisements, I would still be totally unable to believe this.

Video tapes don't lie, only people lie.The fact that Palin is Bush with lipstick should wake up some people before the elections. I swear, this country is on a downward spiral that's not going to stop anytime soon; only when we realize it's too late. You can already see it starting with their promise to overturn decades old programs and laws that work for many Americans, their conpsiracy theories about the media, and their bigotry towards other cultures and races.

Not to mention that the KKK and other right wing militias support the GOP and want them to win

Making new laws to suit your ideaology = FASCISM

  1. The Constitution guarantees us a Republic. The talking heads in the corporate media love to prattle on about a Democracy and pretend that's what we have. The truth is we have neither. We live in a carefully concealed oligarchy.

McCain and Obama are both just sock puppets for the oligarchy. Their job is to perpetuate the illusion that We The People still have any say in how this country is run. So actually, being the most believable liar is actually an important part of the job description.

It's all just a sideshow, a distraction, bread and circus for the ignorant masses. Straight talk express? Yeah, right. Change we can believe in? Yeah, right. The only difference between McCain and Obama is their corporate sponsors.

No matter which of these clowns win, the oligarchs are going to screw us out of more of our rights, property, and money.

And guess who controlled regulations: yes, Barney Frank

Also see Center for Responsive Politics:
Obama has received over 3 times more from lobbyists, $24 million than John McCain at $7 million.

He's become a sad puppet, who's choices are being dictated to him by Corperations he's sold his soul to. You know this in your heart and in your mind, you just dislike liberals, Obama, or whatever too much to admit it.

McCain is a sad reminder of what happens when you let your self interests go ahead of country. If he was REALLY in control would he have chosen someone to be VP he met ONCE? Would he have admitted he would vote against THE SAME BILL HE INTRODUCED months earlier? Come on now.

Conservatives love to bring up Biden's son, or a Mortage company. But mcCain's campaign is run from top to bottom by Lobbyists and Special Interests. Rick Davis, Charlie Black, John Green, Phil Gramm, Wayne Berman. Look these people up and see who has bought and paid McCain's campaign.

  1. Its so incredible that Obama and Biden who undeniably are deep supporters of pork barrel politics (they even both voted for the bridge to nowhere) are still trying to paint a picture of McCain as beholden to their first love. Check out any legitimate website on pork barrel voting and you will find Obama near the top, (Hillary's number 1), Biden somewhere in the middle of the pork spenders and Mc
Cain at the bottom with a number of others. This is year in, year out. For Obama, 2008 is a lighter year due to his obvious campaign but he has always sought big dollars for his constituents. I dare anyone to challenge these facts.

  1. MoveOn.org is not in any way, shape, or form independent. If you take the time to read their site, the content is obviously slated to be liberal.

This is no different than Fox news claiming to be Fair and Balanced.

Both sides play the "Let's claim to be independent when really not" game, as well as turn to special interest groups and lobbyist for funding and backing.

I would have thought this is something the public has been aware of for many elections now and has been accepted as an unfortunate side effect of political ethics gone awry and our societies moral compass going in circles.

32/Nobody is right on the mark though, it is foolish to believe in change or straight talk or a country where we hold more than a ghostly illusion of control.

  1. McCain is not my first choice, but Obama playing class warfare with the 95/5 proposal is laughable. A rise in capital gains affects more than half the country, which is what he proposes. Along with increase federal spending in health care and education. This country needs lower taxes, lower spending, and less rules and regulations. Thomas jefferson, James Madison, and Thomas Paine must be rolling over in their graves. I know the historical failures of socialism and anyone who wants to get closer to that is no friend of mine. Obama is a leftist who appeals with populism.

This administration has single handedly taken not only this Nation but the Global economy down the tubes. Perpetuating the weath of the few at the loss of a middle class and the myth of the house of cards economy and an illegal war and the arrogance for oversight amounts to war crimes but it won't happen....think people...we absolutely must get this election right..we had 8 years of peace and prosperity under Clinton...lets hope we can have the same under Barry Obama and Joe Biden

  1. BIden's son was given a cushy job right in a hedge fund from one of Biden's top contributers, so his son could get out of the lobbying racket. The guy who helped Joe out later regretted it and is suing Joe's son and brother for fraud.

While his son was a lobbyist working for MBNA, Joe fought for legislation favorable to MBNA despite it being opposed by watchdog groups who said it would be terrible for the industry.

That on top of Obama's payoff's from Freddie and Fannie and you can see where once again "MoveOn" misses the mark. I guess when they don't have the phony anti-war stuff to crow about, they'll invent some other partisan ruse.

  1. Why would anyone trust an ad by Moveon.org? They are the group who was funnelling huge foreign contributions into advertisements for the 2004 election. Moveon is nothing more than a mouthpiece for Hungarian Socialist George Soros.

Then there is the fact that George Soros the multi-billionaire makes a big portion of his money speculating in currency markets and commodities. I wonder how much impact his speculation has on current gas prices?

Stop blindly accepting anything seen on TV and ask yourself WHY these ads are being run and who is providing the money.
