NRA targets Obama

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor September 10, 2008 08:06 PM

The National Rifle Association said today it will send a mailer to 4 million members warning that Barack Obama "would be the most anti-gun president in American history."

The mailer also tells members "Don't believe" Obama on the Second Amendment.

"NRA will not allow Barack Obama to revise history," Chris W. Cox, NRA's chief lobbyist, said in a statement. "He has supported bans on handguns and semi-automatic firearms, and he has voted to ban possession of many shotguns and rifles commonly used by hunters and sportsmen across America. And we will remind voters every single time he lies."

When the Supreme Court issued a landmark ruling in June upholding an individual right to bear arms and throwing out a handgun ordinance in Washington, D.C., Obama sought a middle ground. "I have always believed that the Second Amendment protects the right of individuals to bear arms, but I also identify with the need for crime-ravaged communities to save their children from the violence that plagues our streets through commonsense, effective safety measures," he said.

.

"I have always believed that the Second Amendment protects the right of individuals to bear arms...” Since when?

For eight years, 1994- 2001 he funded antigun organizations and “researchers.” with millions as a Director of the Joyce Foundation

Once in political office, he voted to allow lawsuits against the gun
industry; to renew the Clinton "assault weapon" ban; to ban almost all rifle ammo. He has endorsed a complete ban on handgun ownership. He voted to uphold several gun bans and to criminally prosecute people who use firearms in self-defense. He also proposed to ban gun stores within 5 miles of a school or park which would eliminate almost every gun store in America.

He supports the DC v Heller decision?
So why did he and Biden refuse to sign the amicus brief supporting it?
McCain and 305 other members of Congress did.
Sarah Pailin proudly announced Alaska’s Attorney General joined an amicus brief along with 30 other States Attorneys General supporting Heller. Illinois and Delaware did not join that one either.
Delaware’s Attorney General is Joseph R. "Beau" Biden, III

“...but I also identify with the need for crime-ravaged communities to save their children from the violence that plagues our streets through commonsense, effective safety measures," he said.

These are the “commonsense measures” in place in Chicago and D.C.
However, they are not effective. When you hear someone talk about sensible gin laws, they are talking about banning guns, your guns.

I knew this would happen as soon as I heard Gov Palin was an NRA lifelong member... I never doubted that the NRA, one of the most powerful lobbying groups in the United States of America will be there behind her the minute she was appointed -- all the of the NRA, its grass roots-gun toting members, its entire force will be mobilised to work out for her. She will have no problem reaching out to every potential voter hidden in every political nook and cranny of the United States; no stone will be left unturned to introduce her to every gun-wielding voter. I'm sure legions of rednecks are now signing up as her campaign volunteers even as we speak. Obviously, Sarah Palin and her fellow NRAists will lie until they are blue in the face about Sen Obama's sentiments on the Second Ammendment.

Aren't we tired of lies? Never agaiin should a President you want to have a beer with be allowed to lie the American public into a False & Phony war and ignore the real war as George W. Bush was able too! National Security strength, I don't think so, after all 911 happened on the Republicans' watch, but they distorted that message too and you would think that Democrats are weak on national security! Politicans and special interest groups who lie to the public are engaged in a betrayal of the public trust and such distortion should be deemed unethical and in some cases, criminal!

And, it is an outrage or should be that the government can give millions of dollars to CEO’s from the failed Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac and yet, cannot give a second stimulus check to American citizens in these hard economic times?

Republicans say No to a second stimulus while the Democrats say Yes to a second stimulus!

Is the Republican Congress working for CEO’s or are they working for you, the people?

It's hilarious that a candidate like McCain...who receives consistently failing grades from Gun Groups and a C from the NRA itself...is now their new darling.'

McCain has never been a true friend of the 2nd Amendment...he's been pretty much anti-gun his whole time in Washington. And don't even get me started on conservation....McCain has never met a conservation bill he likes...he's even against wetland conservation....

I guess not only is he against guns, he's also against having places for people to be able to hunt and fish. Another Republican for Obama

What "lies" has NRA told about Obama's RECORD on wanting guns banned? NONE! Obama HAS VOTED to ban handguns, etc. He WILL try to BAN GUNS. Maybe the effette Northeasterners can depend on 911 to show up within seconds to PROTECT them . In my world, when seconds count, 911 is minutes or hours away.

This gun-owner sports two degrees from Harvard and can hardly be called a redneck. Your comments are truly insulting to the vast majority of decent gun owners from all walks of life. This is the attitude that makes us want to vote for McCain/Palin. This is the attitude that makes us want to defeat Obama/Biden.

As an armourer in the service and an expert in many weapons, we do not need to have AK47s and machine guns on our streets. The NRA does America a great disservice to send out a mailing that misrepresents Obama’s true feelings on this issue.

It is this type of tactic and single minded attitude that makes the NRA look so fanatical.

You are a sad sad organization that visualizes a machine gun in every window.

The NRA is being truthful about Obama's anti-Second Amendment record. It is NOT a misrepresentaion. Obama spits on the right to self-defense. Such a person is unfit to govern a free people.

The NRA is not fanatical - it never said AK47s and machine guns belong in every window.

Stop lying, Mike!

So much stereotypical and cultural ingnorance! Those who accuse NRA members of being fanatical rednecks have obviously never visited a local rifle/handgun range. I have visited dozens of shooting facilities in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and upstate New York, and the shooters come from all walks of life. Attorneys, business executives, Physicians, Dentists, Engineers, and a growing number of women from all these categories are to be found in abundance.

Like many who are not gun owners or shooters, great numbers of gun owners are disillusioned with our current president and his administration. Gun owners come from all walks, and from all political view points. The common denominator among them is they believe that they, not the government, know what is best for them, and they believe the Bill of Rights (particularly the second amendment) means what is says.

Although NRA has given McCain a "C" for his position on gun rights in the past, McCain is clearly more friendly to gun owners than Obama, so it is entirely logical for NRA to lend it's support to McCain. NRA is a pragmatic and practical, results-driven organization regarding the application of it's political support. This is not disengenuous or hypotcritical; rather this is a reflection of the nature of our current presidential candidates.

I'm a life member of NRA. I'm 54 years of age, a small business owner, I have a degree in microbioloby/chemistry, and I have been an active shooter since age 10. I am not a redneck, but I would charachterize those who think NRA is composed of "legions of rednecks" as elitists; ignorant elitists at that.

Further, although many shooters own semi-automatic firearms of various types, the NRA does not work to have "a machine gun in every window". The armorer who posted that opinion obviously knows little about the NRA.

Obama = Marxist, openly racist, bi-sexual, crack-smoking, Soros-controlled puppet and tool for the new world order.

The two racist books he wrote, and his friends William Ayers and all the other unsavory people he's associated with should disqualify him immediately.

Scary.

Obama is a retard, I support your right to have guns, but I want to take them away. Yeah, that logic makes sense!

obama is proof that a election can be bought ,millons of dollors are being routed
into his fund by special interest groups (wall street, big business, gayrights, antigun
movement, etc.)but winning is not controlling. Obama is radical and very left wing
and has many favores to repay once he takes office. Even though his party will
hold tne majority in congress,he will not be able to control it, and will lead to a
deadlock in washington for the next 4 years. The moderate and right of the democratic
party will vote more to the right with the replublican party, exactly where the majority
of the American voters stand.

We must be careful to not let our passion block our education. The president cannot pass any legislation, that is the job of the Congress. If you want to prevent gun control, you need to shift your efforts to the Senate or House of Representatives. Has anyone bothered to actually look at the Senate or House roll call votes on firearm related legislation? For the 109th and 110th Congress, there are three Senate votes on firearm related legislation:
Vitter Admendment 2274 Prevents foreign organizations from registering or taxing firearms owned by US citizens Yea 81 Nay 10 Not voting 9
Vitter Admendment 4615 Prevents the confiscation of firearms during a major diaster. Yea 84 Nay 16
Kohl Admendment 1646 Requires a gun lock whenever a handgun is transferred to a new owner. Yea 70 Nay 30
How did Obama vote? It is irrelevant because, as president, he cannot vote on legislation. How did your Senator vote? What has happened in the House? How did your representative vote? These are the important questions, not meaningless rhetoric about the president. Fortunately for the NRA, they have employed some very effective people who know that this is exactly where the fight for 2nd Admendment rights begins and ends.

(I would still be a member, but I cannot stomach the unintelligle rantings of Wayne LaPierre. Ah, for the good old days, when conservation, the latest model rifle, and the best hunting locations were the big issues...sigh.)
