Obama appeals to Latinos on economy

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor September 23, 2008 02:17 PM

Barack Obama, reaching out to crucial Latino voters, began airing new Spanish-language radio and TV ads today that assert that Republican John McCain is out of touch, capitalizing on his comment last week that the fundamentals of the economy remain strong.

The ads will be broadcast in Colorado, Florida, Nevada, and New Mexico -- four swing states with sizable numbers of Hispanic voters and with 46 electoral votes combined.

In the TV spot, the announcer says, "For the thousands of mothers and fathers who have lost their jobs, for all the families at risk of losing their homes, for every child out of the 45 million people who have no healthcare, how is it possible that John McCain can say?"

Then McCain is shown saying, "The fundamentals of our economy are strong."

"The fundamentals of our economy are strong?" the announcer picks up. "Maybe John McCain and the Republicans don’t want to bother themselves with the prosperity of our families, but for us, there’s no greater obligation."

"For the last eight years, John McCain and his Bush-Republican allies in Congress have promoted the deregulation policies that let corporations run amuck at the expense of working Latino families and all Americans,” said Federico Peña, the former Clinton cabinet official and Obama's national campaign co-chairman. “This lack of accountability has led to the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression. Latino families are disproportionately affected by the home foreclosure crisis, the rise in unemployment rates, and the skyrocketing gas prices. Barack Obama will put our families ahead of Wall Street, and improve the quality of life of working Latinos who are suffering under this Bush-McCain economic recession.”

Rosario Marin, the former US treasurer, responded on McCain's behalf. “Barack Obama has once again lied and distorted John McCain’s record on the economy. Instead of playing politics, Barack Obama should answer to the Latino community about why he voted to raise taxes on people making as little as $42,000 a year -- a vote that would have meant higher taxes on millions of Hispanics. The only thing Barack Obama can offer to Hispanics is total lack of leadership on this issue,” she said in a statement issued by the McCain camp.

Yet another example of the McCain campaign flat out LYING to the American people. They really want us to be stupid enough to fall for the lies. That's the only way McCain can get elected,by lying, not on his merits.

  1. How do you justify calling this a Bush-McCain economic recession? Foon Rhee is comopletely off base blaming our current economic state on McCain. Is he in the white house already?
McCain was also correct in saying that the fundementals of our economy are strong. Just look at the numbers for a second and pull your head out

  1. okay barack...
explain HOW you will help us. because raising taxes for businesses will only cause them to raise their prices in order compensate....
lower taxes and less gov't is the best way to put more money in our pockets and help the "average" american.

Another McCain campaign 'fact'?! I can't find anything to support this.

Obama's plan is to LOWER taxes for most taxpayers (more than McCain's plan), increasing taxes for those who make more than $250,000 (but, they still pay less than under Reagan).

McCain's plan gives the biggest cut to those making over 2.87 million. Please don't be fooled by the McCain campaign, folks. While Obama's campaign has been running some misleading campaign ads, too, they are nowhere as bad or as frequent as McCain's.

He supported all legistation in favor of the latinos. We do not owe any thing to Obama...

  1. Gretchen - you should go to factcheck.org and verify the claim, especially when there is an absence of information (such as "how much were the taxes increased").

It appears that Obama did in fact once vote to raise taxes (by $15) on individuals who make $42k. A single parent with one child could make 58k, two kids would be 62k, and a family of four would be 90k. It is important to note that this isn't part of his current policy proposal.

The measure for which Obama voted was a budget bill for fiscal 2009. Budget bills set revenue and spending targets for appropriations and tax-writing committees, but don't by themselves legislate any changes in taxes or spending.

Exactly...thats why tax will be reduced for families making anything below 250K under Obama's plan...

  1. Obama did NOT vote to raise taxes for people making less than ***$200,000*** a year. And guys, taxes have to be raised. Period. They had to be raised after Reagan destroyed our economy and engineered the savings and loan scandal (for which McCain was indicted), and they have to raise taxes to take care of the mess that Repubilcans have made of things once again. They just pass the responsibility to the next president. Someone is going to have to pay off our debt eventually.

For some latinos, they don't care who the president is as long as they have a job. ...in case they haven't known...Latinos dislike black people. there are some neighborhoods that black gangs and latino gangs shoot each other. So, it's not going to work. And mostly they aren't educated, they'll see Obama as a black guy.
They don't care for economy..they just want to know how can they live in the US legally. Who is taking illgel migrants issues seriously these days?

  1. Obama's camp complained that the McCain camp is focusing on the "lipstick on a pig" comment, and now they're doing the same thing. He's focusing on the "fundamentals are strong" comment, when McCain already retracted that statement.

Obama is the same as McCain, they're both just playing games to try and win, making empty promises to the people to persuade their vote, but in the end, they're both just politicians with their own hidden agendas.

Obama's commercial points out how McCain's comment is out of touch, but conveniently lacks to mention how he plans to help out the latinos.

  1. This claim that Oabam wanted to raise taxes on the middle class is simply false. This whole discussion about Obama that wants to "raise taxes on everyone" cannot be further from the truth. Obama wants to raise the top rate to the level it was under Clinton. Only those making over 250K would be affected, and even for them the tax raise is relatively mild (from 35% currently to 39%). And as a result, Obama plans to provide healthcare if not for everyone, certainly for more people than get it today. And we need to start balancing the budget that has been indeficits since Bush came into office. There are many reasons to like John McCain - for his experience, his service, etc. But let's be objective and talk about facts and not make false statements about Obama's proposals and programs.

  1. This country welcomes the immigrant to buy a home, car, grocery and live in this country while at the same time launch an all out media campaigns to get rid of the very same immigrants and their jobs. Just a few weeks ago the new president would be determined by which could get rid of the most immigrants in the least amount of time.

If you want to cut out 11,000,000 people you should be prepared to lose 11,000,000 x Annual Salary X # of years they will work; for those very same immigrants, Now we're over a trillion in lost revenue for sure!

What doesn’t make sense about what is happening in our economy? This country needs a forecast and direction for future industry and employment prospects in subways and mass transportation; away from cars and oil consuming anything.

We need fewer politicians with no background in accounting, finance or economics principals of government.

What will solve the problem? 5,000,000 home buyers for 5,000,000 forclosed homes; not a bail-out focused exclusively on keeping the rich, rich.

America should WELCOME BACK the immigrant home buyer. That is the only reasonable solution.

See South Side Chicago, where Obama has worked for over 22 years, as "community organizer," Ill. rep, Ill. senator, and US Senator. See how much it has improved!

What? It looks just like it did 23 years ago? No improvement in quality of life?
No new jobs? No healthcare? Falling-down tenements? And you want this twit who just paid off his student loans to run the country???

  1. Don't be fooled!!
In Iowa, Obama said, "When America gets a cold, Black America gets pneumonia". He didn't say "Hispanics, Whites, Asians, the Poor", he said "Black Americans". Obama's 20-year close friendship with Rev. Wright, who preaches Black Nationalism, is another indicator of BO’s racist agenda. The Wright family's Trumpeter Magazine, named the infamous hate-monger, and Black Muslim, Louis Farrakhan, as The Man of the Distinction. To hear Michelle Obama say she is "finally proud of our country" because her husband was nominated shows her self-serving agenda.
Do you really think he will support anyone over his own race? Obama wants to be “inspiring” and vote for “change”. Obama voted “present” over 100 times, on issues while in office! Even Joe Lieberman, a previous Democratic Vice Presidential nominee, endorses John McCain because of his inclusiveness and caring. John McCain stayed in a POW camp until ALL the men were released. This is someone who did it for EVERYONE. John McCain has DEMONSTRATED his leadership and integrity by doing the right thing and changing things for the better, regardless of the political party, race or popular view.

  1. John McCain's campaign is run by the corporate lobbyists that put this country into economic disaster if anyone thinks he isn't for big corporations at the little guy's expense they are fooling themselves. The more the Republicans increase the debt by staying in Iraq the more the dollar is devalued and the less the dollar buys. Too bad people like Rosario Marin, the former US treasurer don't understand the job they were hired to do. They increased debt, borrow money from China and the average American now buys less with the American dollar. Less taxes don't mean anything when Bush, McCain and the rest of the Republicans ruin the dollar, the money you have in the bank buy less so you have less, you have the equivilent of an American peso. Thanks to Bush and mCCain.

Obama is pushing for the $700B bailout.

Obama must BELIEVE that the fundamentals are strong, otherwise how in the world can the economy afford the bailout??? Tell us, BO.

Or is the economy actually weak and you're pushing for the bailout so the country goes into a Great Depression and then your Islamic Jihad buddies can rush in and take over???

Same old smelly BO. Wait around and flap your yapper long enough to take both sides of every issue.

Then point the finger at John McCain when you're caught in a LIE.

  1. Latinos deserve a family doctor just as much as white wealthy suburbanites do. Latinos deserve a living wage. Latinos deserve good schools and the ability to go to an affordable college. Latinos deserve a government that treats all its citizens with respect. Only Obama has a record of truly helping minorities (like when he authored and passed legislation forcing police interogations to be taped so that forced confessions would not happen; and putting a stop to racial profiling). Obama will get you health care, affordable college, a living wage, and a justice system that is fair and balanced.

He is on talking about the people making $250,000 or more a year who have not been payiing their fair share compared to the rest of us working stiffs. Ann on the "fundamentals" of our economy being strong, you must have either been under a rock over the last 8 years or your part of the 1% that controlls 90% of the wealth of the nation. If we don't get real, we might just end up being a 3rd world country within a few years. As a matter of fact we are already borrowing from China and India and being monitored by the IMF. That is low! Vote Obama and make a change

  1. If someone in this forum called 911 and asked for emergency help, would it matter what skin color, age, natural origin, weight, height, sex, or religion they were? NO!

The only thing you would be concerned about at that moment is, "Can this person on the other end of the phone help me?!!!"

For crying out loud people! America is in a cultural, economic, global, and international relations emergency!!! A Bush administration disaster! Deregulation has derailed not only our economy, but is also threatening the rest of the world! But for some of you greedy and selfish Americans who call yourself "patriots", and you know who you are, you are just crooks with high priced lawyers in business suits or, more simply for some, traditionally motivated by the unintelligent traditions of prejudice. Let's just call it what it is! Be honest with yourself for once in your life!

Fact: Clinton - Democrat - 8 years in office - 1st national surplus recorded in the past 50 years!, peace, prosperity, and the lowest unemployment recorded for decades!!!

Fact: Bush - Republican - 8 years - largest national debt in history, largest financial failure and bailout in modern history!!!, illegal sanctioned war in Iraq for false WMD claims, highest gas prices in history, largest domestic disaster relief failure in history (Hurricane Katrina), and now, you want us to believe that the GOP has the American public's interests at heart? Please! Are you blind or do you nah-sayers and pundits just choose to be ignorant? Perhaps both, but you let your conscious guide you - if you have one. Or maybe the McCain supporters here are like him - selfish, greedy, opportunistic, malicious spirited old Republican who package these descriptions as being a "maverick" that thinks if your pocket are full then everyone else must be lazy!

Yeah, two thumbs up to a POW who leaves his crippled wife and 3 kids when he returns from the war to marry another woman. That's who Americans can trust. Oh yeah! Woo hoo! You betcha buddy! And pigs can fly (with lipstick)!!!

The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior. If McCain thinks we're on the right track, then he won't change anything.

  1. McCain Has been a member of the Washington Elite for over 20 Years. If he is not part of the problem, he is not doing anything to fix it. This Country is in the hole because nobody is doing a thing to fix it.

If you really want to fix this country, lets talk about 3 topics

    1. Education: One of the worst education systems in the word. My son is a High School Senior. He has six classes, Arts, Phisical Education, Math, Social Studies, Science and something called Senior Forum.

I studied in other country when by the time I started 7 grade I had classes like Advance Algebra, Phisics, Trigonometry, Biology, Chemestry, etc. We are raising a bunch of lazy butts.

    2. Oil dependecy: I dont need to talk about this we all know. Iran, Saudi Arabia, etc. produce their own oil but are looking for alternative energy resources. Like compress Air, Electricity, etc. as an example: India is selling a Car called the air car (Make by the owner of Jaguar) Tata motors. This car works with compress AIR. over 200 miles per gallon.

    3. Labor dependency: We depend on external labor because a lot of american dont want to do the dirty jobs that hispanics will do. Again i have a son who want to make 20 dollars an hour but he dont want to go to collegue.

If you really want to change history VOTE OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT.

by the way. We need to fix wellcare, medicare, food stamps programs and all that stuff. you see a bunch of people collecting stamps, no job, 9 kids but driving a BMW?

  1. Is incredible how McCain and Rosario Marin in this article, think that "LATINOS" "HISPANICS" are going to fall for their LIES!

There are over 35 million Latinos/Hispanics in this country. Their voice is very powerful and very loud, so loud that they know the difference between a person who really wants to help their community and the country, bring about tax cuts, health care, affordable college education, and stability to the economy, like Obama/Biden.

The economy of which many of the Latino/Hispanic provide their hard work day-to day and contribution to this country. The Latino/Hispanic community is not sleep, so no matter what McCain and Rosario Marin say, it will not work, the hispanic community are more than hard workers, they are thinkers, from all walks of life, that can and will make a positive difference in this elections.

The truth is, McCain/Palin, are not the "agents of change", is only lie after lie, and they keep avoiding the media, as it was a prime example today at the United Nations, when the media could not be part of the meetings with Palin and the world leaders, she meet for the first time. Rejecting the media is only part of the McCain/Palin strategy to cover up her lack of experience, as she is not ready to be VP now or even on day one!

Is very simple, I'm a latino/hispanic and like so many in my community, I and they can tell the difference between truthfullness and lies. We are educated, we can think, we read the news, we question, and we challenge the McCain/Palin and in Rosario Marin lies.

At the end of the day, McCain/Palin are not reformers, not for the hispanic community, not for this country. They are hungry for power and will say anything to be in the White House.

  1. i guess it would be too much , to hope that people would stop and think one minute. most of america runs on people working for smal to mid size companies
and if these companies do not make over 250,000 per year before taxes they will
propably have to close or at the very least lay off some of the "poor people" working for them. That means that all of these companies will have to pay extra taxes which means 1. they will have to increase their selling prices (sometimes they cannot) 2 . lay off people to compensate so in the end taxing the rich will effect the so called poor rs

Obama can't do it because all he will do is divide congress and nothing will get passed. Then it will only get harder as public support for a fair immigration bill starts to disappear.

If we get hit with another terrorist attack before an immigration reform bill is passed...you can forget it. Americans will demand the borders get locked down and all illegals thrown out. If immigration reform is important to the Latino community they had better vote McCain.

Most parents of educated hispanics have always voted democarted, it's the younger baby boomers that have support Republicans in the past few years, like myself 46 year old hispanic business owner. But President Bush and this bubby system have done nothing to help the middle class or self-employed small business owners.

With that said, I am really for a change and will vote for the first time like my Father and Mother have done for years Demo. I live in Texas, a strong Republican state, but the funny part is I live in a upper middle class subdivision, in Frisco Texas. And all I hear and see is this upper middle class people want change. Obama type change, that has been the biggest surprise.

If enough people go vote for change, I think Obama will have a chance in Texas. That would be a blow to the Republican Party if Texas ever turn Blue or even purple.

  1. This is the kind of attitude Obama and his media tank have brought this great country. This is one of thousands I've read and I quote:

"Did he really slap that white boy? He is the man! That's what I'm talkin about! Put that white ho in his place! It's time for the world to know who's in charge in this mother! All you other gun toting, religion clinging white trash better get ready, too!"

  1. In a few weeks we will make a choice that will decide our future. I follow an economist named Bob Proctor. He has called the top and bottom of every market crash since the 70s correctly. Also, he perfectly predicted the current real estate market meltdown and the picture he paints about what will happen in the next couple years is terrifying. He thinks it will be worse then the great depression.
The banks in the U.S. are going under one after the other. Countrywide the largest morgage bank in the world,Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch which are 3 out of the top 5 wall street firms. Also, Fanny and Freddy Mae which hold 50 percent of the home loans in the United States. The government took them over because they are essentially bankrupt. If they didn't the entire financially system would virtually shut down, the stock market would crash and we would suffer beyond what any of us have seen before.
McCain just like Bush " doesn't understand the economy".
That not just my opinion its his own words. Not only does he not understand how to fix it but he does not understand exactly what is broken.
It is no surprise that he doesn't. The people that make up these securities use complex mathematical models very few people understand.
Bush and McCain both can take the credit for this mess since they helped deregulate the laws that were protecting us.

Bush's economic advisor Phil Graham wrote the deregulation bill that allowed banks to take huge risks with all of our future.
Now, Phil Graham is the head of McCain's economic policy. He is also McCain's choice for the next secretary of the treasury.
No one in this country can afford for that to happen. The last time Bush met with his economic advisors was in March. He either didn't care or didn't realize that anything was wrong. Phil Graham had the guts to say that we are in a mental recession after he helped create the worst economy meltdown in our lifetime.
It will take the best and brightest minds in the world to get us out of this nightmare. As bad as Bush has done, McCain would be
even more destructive because things are in much worse shape. The next president will not inherit a surplus like Bush did but a tanking economy and a 11,600,000,000,000 (trillion) dollars deficit. Most of it Bush created and it will take decades to pay it back.
If you do what you have always done then you will get what you have always got.

When it comes to policy Bush and McCain are the same 90 percent of the time.
So why are the polls even close then ?

The chairman of McCains campaign recently said that people don't vote on issues they vote on a personality composite. Which means he is trying to sell you personality instead of results.

He believes people will vote against their own interests.

Let's teach him we are smarter than that .
Hold them accountable NOW! while it will still help.
