Obama camp hits back at Palin in money appeal

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor September 4, 2008 10:32 AM

Barack Obama's campaign quickly jumped on the series of speeches attacking him, especially Sarah Palin's withering sarcastic jabs, to send out a fund-raising appeal to supporters.

Campaign manager David Plouffe suggested that Obama's multitude of small donors, whom he is counting on because he is eschewing public financing, had been trashed themselves.

"I wasn't planning on sending you something tonight," Plouffe said in an email sent out overnight. "But if you saw what I saw from the Republican convention, you know that it demands a response. I saw John McCain's attack squad of negative, cynical politicians. They lied about Barack Obama and Joe Biden, and they attacked you for being a part of this campaign.

"But worst of all -- and this deserves to be noted -- they insulted the very idea that ordinary people have a role to play in our political process. You know that despite what John McCain and his attack squad say, everyday people have the power to build something extraordinary when we come together. Make a donation of $5 or more right now to remind them.

"Both Rudy Giuliani and Sarah Palin specifically mocked Barack's experience as a community organizer on the South Side of Chicago more than two decades ago, where he worked with people who had lost jobs and been left behind when the local steel plants closed.

"Let's clarify something for them right now. Community organizing is how ordinary people respond to out-of-touch politicians and their failed policies.

"And it's no surprise that, after eight years of George Bush, millions of people have found that by coming together in their local communities they can change the course of history. That promise is what our campaign has been about from the beginning.

Throughout our history, ordinary people have made good on America's promise by organizing for change from the bottom up. Community organizing is the foundation of the civil rights movement, the women's suffrage movement, labor rights, and the 40-hour workweek. And it's happening today in church basements and community centers and living rooms across America.

"Meanwhile, we still haven't gotten a single idea during the entire Republican convention about the economy and how to lift a middle class so harmed by the Bush-McCain policies. It's now clear that John McCain's campaign has decided that desperate lies and personal attacks -- on Barack Obama and on you -- are the only way they can earn a third term for the Bush policies that McCain has supported more than 90 percent of the time.

"But you can send a crystal clear message. Enough is enough."

  1. If Barak Obama wants to mock her experience as mayor she has every right to note that it is still more experience than his as a "Community Organizer". Obama's campaign needs to get a grip and realize if they can't take it, they shouldn't dish it. If anything I felt that Palin's speech further illustrated why the McCain/Palin ticket is a vote for change, for people who aren't afraid to take on the establishment and win, and the Obama/Biden ticket is more of the same. Change isn't just a tag line Obama. What have you actually done, nothing, you've accomplished nothing, no bills, no vetos, nothing. At least this team actually has accomplished change and its on their record to see.

  1. He Plouffe, What do you mean when you say "ordinary people" ? I'm an ordinary person (I think anyway). Maybe I make too much money, which would make me, hmmm I don't know you tell me, maybe a bad person ? - Ah, Bush-McCain politics...that one never gets old. Me thinks, the big reason for the lagging economy is too many "ordinary people" buying $500,000 dollar homes on incomes that can't support paying the mortgage. Poor Obama, Sarh and Rudy and John were so mean to him last night :)

Suck it up and go find some more lies about the Palin's....

  1. People of America, you and I of the minimum wage earning bracket, remember the Republican Party is a party of the RICH by the RICH hence their insensitivity to our issues...the poor lower and middle class Americans. They will therefore slanderously portray other leaders (read B. Obama) and us as inconsequential nobodies and go on to insinuate that our leaders have no excutive experience. What experience have they? Any of them been President? As far as I know nothing of the sort is in either camp, so shut up GOP and do a better job at and by representing the citizenry's issues...both the rich and the poor alike. You the GOP have a huge task ahead at articulating the real issues that affect Americans. Slandering Barack Obama will not do. Sen. Obama will make his history and will leave, but the blunder already wroth by the current GOP administration/leadership and the one you seem to be perptuating through petty seamer and slander falsehoods that you are so good at instead of offering leadership, will remain with us and push American people still deeper into economic and world leadership quagimare. Get out and show some leadership not mediocrity and small talk, for small talkers spend their time maligning and debasing other people's great ideas and service to humanity.

  1. THE TRUTH HURTS!!!!

When are the Liberals going to realize their ticket is hollow. I am still on the fence who to vote for but I can't warm up to a man running our country who has done nothing. great speaker -yes , leader - NO

  1. It is pretty funny how Democrats can throw stones but when it is done to the Democrats they cry fowl, now I know why my great country has gone done the tubes, It is because of you liberals. I want a real HERO and servant of the people, who dedicated there whole life to be a public servant, JOHN MCcain is that hero. Just like that Democrat Kennedy. Obummu is out for himself and his image, you should have picked Hillary as their running mate, at least there would be a chance. I predict a land slide. How about the fact Obaumma was a drug user too!
You Democrat phonies deserve every jab you get. I certainly do not want a President that can't make his OWN mind up and has no Courage and from what I heard with my own ears from Obummas mouth He gave up on Iraq. That shows me he has quit on our soldiers great for Moral Obumma! Stick to local community service you phony. Better yet gear up with the Marines and go defend MY country like a man. You are a very arrogant. Like we owe you something. Go get held hostage as a prisoner of war and see if you could last 5 years of torture. You'd crack after the first slap across you face, you have proven absolutley nothing to me our this country, Your resume stinks. Liberalism is Americas communism.
One more thing since we have BET tv I was wondering if I have a new tv station can I call it WET "White entertainment Telivision, or is that racial? Face it Obumma YOU can't have your cake and eat it too. I hope it is a land slide. But you liberal dems will find a way to cry about your loss. Stop sending Obumma literature
to my house you are wasting your time, money and not to mention the paper you waste

  1. I cannot believe that after all that this country has been through that people would even entertain the joke that was put on tv last night.

Even though I will vote for Obama, I wanted to hear what Palin had to say. I mean lets face it people we do not know much about her.

All I heard was more of the same. Her speech was 2004 all over again. Be scared the dems won't protect you only the republicans will. - George Bush '04/ Sarah Palin '08

The shot about community service was meant to show Obama's qualifications to hers. I get it, however, didn't Palin and the republicans think that they were putting down the very people that do this work? Not to mention, the republicans fail to mention that Obama was a State Senator who authored 800 bills, is Harvard Law Educated and was the President of the Harvard Law Review let alone the fact that he is a US Senator.

The republicans want to say that for the past 2 years he has been on the presidential stump and has done nothing. Did Mitt Romney blow off his last two years in office as governor doing exploratory work trying to run for president?

Obama even took the high road on Palin and publicly denounced the whole issue with Palins daughter.

Let’s hear some facts republicans. You gave none last night. All I heard was mudslinging and lies.

As for Palin, she was in fact for the bridge to nowhere before she was against it.
She got into office as governor and vetoed it. However, she kept the 223 million in
earmarked money. She did not tell us that but its true. Saying she voted it down sounds like seeing how its dead the money was never granted. Same old politics as usual.

    I'll wait.

  1. Trusting the words of a republican is like turning the gas on before you leave your house. If you are one of the 90% of Americans who earn between 25.000 and 75,000, the republicans will not do anything for you. They are owned by the richest people in the land and they tow their line. The republicans owe their support to rich business interests--that's all. Don't be fooled. They would rather see you loose your job and house than see their friend's investment drop by 5%. When Palin talks about business she appeals to small business but she is only talking about big business. They are out to take everything from the middle class!

  1. Lets face it, new Millennium Republicans are evil. They stand for what is wrong in the world, and in our country. Our image is tanrnished globally thanks to the Bush administration and John McCain, whom I would have voted for in 2000, is too much of a follower to their failed policies. Voted in favor of 90% of their policies, hows that for the truth hurting. Im a former republican, but when people vote Democrat, EVERYBODY wins. Not just the few and thats all Republicans want. Its time for a change, new ideas, new persepctive. Lets see what happens. If McCain wins it will just be more of the same. so that truth hurts the most for all the GOP gun toting, religious fanatic morons.

  1. I am tired of both Republicans and Democrats. You are all so ordinary, lack vision and uniqueness, and are like lemmings. Be independent and do not let a Democratic or Republican made for television spectacle decide what you think. Think for yourself. Perhaps that is too much to ask for from some people. Those are the people who take their cues from the pithy phrases of partisanship offered by both parties. I have not heard anything from Obama that makes me want to vote for him, but I do admire his personal story. Governor Palin seems like a lovely, hard working woman, mother, and leader. As a New England elitist, she scares me! I do not identify with her bear hunting, salmon fishing ways. That is okay. I do not vote for a candidate based on whether or not I can have them over for tea. I vote for a candidate that will be competent enough to surround him or herself with advisers who are competent. I vote for a candidate who will be able to pick wisely the advice offered. Both major parties offer a bleak choice for me this year. Perhaps this will be the first year of a write in bote for me.

  1. Barack Obama believes that this country should work for everybody, not just the people who live in a state that sends them a check every month from big oil companies.

John McCain's attack squad made it clear that people in small towns in oil rich states like Alaska matter. But if you happen to live in a city , or in any urban community where organizing is the only way to make sure you don't fall behind, then you don't matter - especially if you don't happen to be white.

I think he and his oil-rich friends like Sarah Palin are wrong. America isn't about excluding people - it's about including everybody, and taking care of everybody when they fall on hard times, not just people from states with corrupt representatives who can bring home the bacon through pork-barrel projects.

  1. Same GOP lies as always, same false hood, same no talk on real issues. Palin is Dick Cheney in drag, just hope she is a better shot.

McCain/Palin are not Reformers, especially Palin. Seems all her "Reforms" were to get rid of political rivals and to further her own political power. Beware reformers who drap themselves in their own reformer glory, they always tend to be just more of the same politics.

McCain would have been a good president in 2000, his views then were tolerant and as a moderate I could get behind them. Now in 2008, that is not the same John McCain. He has lowered himself to get elected. Sure he would rather lose an election than lose a war, but he would rather lose himself than lose an election.

At least I hear hope from Obama, at least I hear policy from Obama and more importantly I hear a positive message of change.

With Biden I at least hear experience, I hear judgemnt and I hear policy

When I hear McCain I hear the same failed policies, I hear the gridlock that has hampered the current congress for the past 18 months and I the same old GOP attack line

Palin, I hear nothing from her, I hear just negative attacks, I hear if your are not one of us you are wrong and evil.

God help this country if McCain wins and ,god forbid, he dies in office. Palin will ruin this country.

  1. One Trillion in debt after inheriting a surplus?
Republicans have the GALL to suggest "librels" are tax and spend?
    Republicans are spend and spend.
8 years of lies, corruption, Big Oil, Haliburtion, K Street, KBR, flouting of the constitution, signing statements that negate the very bill being signed?, incompetence, secrecy on formation of energy policy, shredded credibility abroad, irresponsible spending? and failed economics of deregulated financial markets?
    Another Republican is for Change?
No. more of the same. Voting with BushCheney over 90% of the time?
    This is a reformer?
    An agent of change?
    Talk about kool aid drinking.
Then they produce a woman who is for the bridge and money to nowhere before she's against it? And keeps the money, thank you.
Ah, I don't see a credibility problem here, do you?
And to top it all off, one of McCain's key advisers suggests that this election is not going to be about issues...(that's a quote) it's about personalities?

Republicans actually BELIEVE all this crap about reformer and about change?
I look forward to a vigorous examination of all this "executive leadership" Palin brings to the table.

SHE HAS NONE....as Mayor, she hired a City Administrator to do her job. As Governor, she has done absolutely nothing. If she has been so great for Alaska, why did Exxon only have to pay a small fraction of damages to Alaska after the Exxon Valdez spill? And the Exxon news is very recent. All McCain has done is vote with Bush 90% of the time! Boy, that really is helping this country!

  1. "Community organizing is how ordinary people respond to out-of-touch politicians and their failed policies."
WRONG! In the United States of America, ordinary people respond by running for office, getting elected and initiating CHANGE! REAL change!

Barak Obama was an Illinois State Senator for 6 years, elected from THE MOST politically corrupt area in the country, and he did NOTHING to change how the Daly political machine runs things -NOTHING! Not ONE reform, not ONE investigation.

If this man can do NOTHING to reform his own corrupt backyard, why in the name of all that's good do his followers believe him when he talks about changing Washington D.C.?

  1. As an independent I have to wonder if Plouffe thinks the democratic convention was less "negative" or "cynical" than the republican convention.

Plus his criticism that the republicans "insulted the very idea that ordinary people have a role to play in our political process" seems odd given the republican choice of VP. She appears to be as ordinary as they come with a huge role in the political process. (Maybe I don't understand Plouffe's definition of "ordinary".)

  1. How is it that in America, the greatest of nations, the country that has long held out an example to the rest of the world of freedom, hope, compassion and courage, two critical groups of people cannot speak civilly to each other about the decisions that direct our government? What do we want from our nation? Not from our parties, but from our people? Do we want fury? Do we want the shirking of responsibility? Do we want snark? Or do we want to figure out how to fix the things that are broken and strengthen the things that are not?

America needs more from its election seasons than the relentless polarization of the country. For that, there is plenty of blame to go around. But these are serious times, and, to paraphrase a fictional President, we need serious people to get through them. We need each other. And we need to each be our best selves -- not our best Republicans or our best Democrats, but our best American selves. We owe it to ourselves, our neighbors, our country and the world.

done nothing. Tell me, what has Sen. McCain done, other than bring this
country down and way down by voting along with Pres. Bush. Sen. McCain I
must say, was smart enough for once, to disassociate himself from
the President and Vice-President because he knew he had to do so if he
wants to consider a possible win. Note "Possible." The American people have
had it with Republicans and that was proven so many times in previous elections.
The majority of Republican who were speakers at their convention always were
introduced as the "FORMER' this or that. Does that tell you something?

  1. Obama was a community organizer (people who go back to their community to help the poor through difficult economic times by using their professional expertese) after graduating at the top of his class from the most prestigious law program in the nation and before becoming a STATE SENATOR, a position he held for EIGHT years before becoming a US SENATOR. Do you want to know what 'hockey mom' was doing during Obama's time as an organizer of the poor? She was a sports reporter!!!!! Are you freakin' kidding me?!?! What exactly do you think was the most important decision she ever made as mayor of a town the size of my HIGH SCHOOL? To PAVE a DIRT road. She did try to ban some books at the local library and fired the librarian later. The town is going global today though; I heard they're building a Target store.

What about this infamous bridge to nowhere she so valliantly opposed? She was for it when she ran for governor and then against it, but NEVER gave the money back to the federal government once it was paid out to Alaska!!!! How can you campaing on an issue in one election and then campaing against it in another and expect people not to notice?!?! I'll tell you how: you think the national voters are IDIOTS.

Obama's foreign policy experience includes graduating from Columbia University with a degree in political science with an emphasis on international relations. In the U.S. Senate Obama is unique among Senators in that he serves on three of the four Senate Committees dealing with foreign policy issues including the Foreign Relations; Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs; and Veterans' Affairs committees and is the Chair of the Foreign Relations Subcommittee on European Relations which is responsible fore U.S. relations with European countries, the European Union, and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (i.e., NATO).

We know Palin eats breakfast at IHOP, but is that the extent of her foreign policy experience?

If you honestly think that Palin is ready to serve as president of this country (McCain is old and has had cancer several times) it cannot be because of her experience. The same charge can be made against Obama, which is fair game, but please DO NOT fool yourself into thinking that the issue of experience is driving your decision. You are voting on character and personality!!!! That is all.

  1. How can you say he's not a leader!! A true leader is one who is able to start a real movement, which is what Obama has begun, a movement of positivity and collaboration toward a unified America. I seriously doubt any other person previously in the running or the current republican ticket could get half of the 85,000+ people gathered together for a common POSITIVE cause, the reclaimation of the US and restoration of respect from the rest of the world.

With the continued divisive, negative, and threat laden rhetoric of the current administration and radical right views of Palin, our country will likely be in more danger than it ever has. 911 happened under JWB watch, remember that now.

    A universal, timeless truth:

“Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds. The latter cannot understand it when a person does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses their intelligence.”

    -Albert Einstein

Precisely what Obama is experiencing right now..........Very, very sad!!

  1. 2 Points:

    1. Giuliani insulted and trivialized the tireless work of "community organizers"!
    2. Thompson insulted the signifigance of the first African American to nominated by a political party when he said "Obama is "history-marking nominee for president," History-making in that he is the most liberal, most inexperienced nominee to ever run for president."."

So this is the values of the Republican party? From where I stand this sounds like racism and snobbery. These are the words extracted from the transcripts of your candidates whom spoke recently at the RNC. I don't mind when the candidates beat up on each other but could the PLEASE not attack people that devote their lives to a cause, like community organizers and Thompsons speech must have made Martin Luther Kings family feel badly with his comments that were made on their fathers anniversary of his GREAT speech.

Now Conservatives, here is your challenge, please hold all your abusive comments and instead make your case for why I should vote for McCain/Palin who allow these hateful words to be spoken. Don't talk about issues, please tell me WHY these words are acceptable.

  1. All I know is that last night Palin attacked the Democratic Party, but what did she REALLY say, what points did she make about how they will FIX the problems Bush has made over the last 8 yrs. I didn't hear anything positive; all she talked about were negative points about how inexperienced Obama is. I saw Biden on the news this morning, he was asked, now this isn't word for word but you will get the gist. He was asked in light of the Republican campaign last night, would he change his campaign attitude, he said no. Obama and Biden are running a clean, respectable, straight forward campaign, all McCain and Palin can do is degrade and insult people? Do we really want that kind of government? Some petty, bully?! I mean, Obama isn't experienced, okay, so he didn't go off to war, but when he was asked about her daughter being a pregnant teen, he backed away and said that children of candidates should be off-limits. That his own mother was a teen mom and he had nothing more to say. I agree they should, she should have never brought him on stage, she just opened the can on her own.

I just have one more thing to add. One posting here by Lee "How about the fact Obaumma was a drug user too!" Please, show us proof! I know I was told as a child, never believe anything you hear (read) and only half of what you see, so where is your proof? Are you still in high school, if you are I can understand a little more if you are, but if your an adult, aren't you a little old for spreading rumors? And please learn how to spell his name, O-B-A-M-A, you are just making yourself look ignorant!

I am not sure about anyone else, but I would rather have an honest, smart, considerate, passionate person in office than someone who one who does nothing but belittle and insult people, not only Obama and Biden, but she also insulted the people of the U.S. who make less the 5 million a year!!! Middle class, ha-ha, I wish I were middle class, I could do a lot with 5 million. a year!

  1. In Palin's speech last night, why do they call it a speech? All she did was speak in quips and smart remarks about the opposing party, she didn't clear anything up, she didn't say anything that would have pursuaded me to vote for her instead of Obama. In fact she seemed to me to be very petty, very small. I don't know who wrote her "speech" but I wouldn't want him working for me or with me for that matter. She is a very good speaker, but a leader? If, god forbid, something happened to McCain, I would not want her in office!
She didn't talk about how her and McCain were going to fix the country, all she said was that how can you get this country out of where it is by NOT drilling, what?
Did she mention anything about the housing market? NO. She just insulted the american people as a whole.

I know I am not the most knowledgeable person when it comes to politics, but I do know when someone is being honest, compationate and straight forward. Obama knows he does not have the background in forgein affairs that maybe he needs, which is why Biden is there. They are both extremely intelligent people, I think for the first time in a long time there is someone running for office that has a good head on their shoulders.

I am all for womans' rights and all, but it HAS to be the right one. I would not vote for them JUST because she is a woman, what sense would that make?

No, I am not voting for McCain and Palin, I am voting for Obama and Biden!!
    They are the logical choice!!
