Obama holds edge in five battlegrounds
The latest series of polls in possible swing states shows little change, despite the two party conventions, John McCain's surprise selection of Sarah Palin as his running mate, and the turmoil on Wall Street.
The survey released this morning by The Washington Post, Quinnipiac University, and the Wall Street Journal gives Democrat Barack Obama a 49 percent to 45 percent lead over McCain in Colorado, a 48 percent-44 edge in Michigan, and a 47 percent-45 percent margin in Minnesota.
Only in Wisconsin is Obama's lead -- 49 percent to 42 percent -- outside the statistical margin of error.
The results are very close to Quinnipiac polls in the four states in July. Combined, the four states have 46 of the 270 electoral votes needed to win the White House.
Late Monday, an ABC News/Washington Post poll said Obama had pulled ahead in Virginia, which has been Republican recently, 49 percent to 46 percent.

FOX is still citing polls that are at least a week old, trying to make the race closer than it really is. A lot happend in a week as we know and these latest polls show the trend is turning in Obama's favor. The question is can his momentum be sustained?...never cited are polls from Iowa which consistently favor Obama by as much as 11 pts and average 9 pts (from Real Clear Poilitics). What is it about Iowa that favors Obama so strongly? Doesn't anyone care to take a look? Are they so different from Minnesota, Wisconsin or Ohio???
Where are these polls coming from? Why don't they ask the real voters who they are voting for instead of picking a select few?
Sen Schumer of NY was proven to be one of the biggest backers of deregulation, and even authored a letter in the WSJ in 2006 supporting this, yet he goes on TV over the weekend to cast McCain in that light. Obama in 2006 said that John McCain was one of the most honorable people he'd met in the Senate, and a champion for good fiscal policy. Yet today, his comments differ from that (Politics as usual???)
Also, Hedge funds (the least regulated part of the industry) has performed brilliantly. How do dem's explain this. Oh, those dems--have we heard of Pelosi, or Reed, or Obama, or Clinton, or Biden losing money in this economy? NO--guess they're not like the rest of us blue collar workers.
Palin has and she checks her checkbook weekly just like us! (though to be fair McCain has not)--but McCain's family is big on charitable stuff. His wife is quitely one of the best at putting her money to work globally where it is needed.
We are going to wake up with an economy that is highly regulated thanks to the Dems, yet owned by foreign interest (Japan, China, and Russian banks). Go America!!
Vote Republican this election. This independent shurely will!
It's interesting to see how more conservative news sources will paint this survey. I have seen more than one instance where a regular news outlet will portray the poll of voters and post the outcome, while a nother will show the exact opposite in the standings from the same information.
Sad, just sad. America is disappearing.
Palin has run out of steam. Luvin it!!
Obama is the messiah.
So let it be written, so let it be said.
The only poll that counts is on November 4. The rest of these polls are tools of the liberal media to manipulate public opinion. It is interesting that when Obama leads - even in one poll, the media cannot stop gushing over it. But when McCain is ahead - even in all the polls - they find other stories to talk about. Very subtle - NOT!
When the shouting about the economy stops, if anyone will listen, the facts will show that the lowering of the bar that allowed unqualified borrowers to get in over their heads that lead to this collapse started during the Clinton administration. And that John McCain has consistently tried to warn us that it was a ticking bomb.
Obama Baby, you are a good public speaker, but you are also the most liberal candidate that is the product of Chicago Southside Political Machine which has a long and rich history of political corruption of the first magnitude. You are indeed a child of that system and I don''t want you anywhere near the Oval Office...have a nice day.
At night, I can see the moon and stars. Does that mean I'm qualified to work at NASA?
It's discturbing how Republicans are trying to paint Democrats as the architects of the deregulation that allowed this entire mess to happen. Phil Gramm (R) authored and pushed through the bill that gave investment banks the go ahead to sell these flimsy mortgage securities in December of 2000 while the country and the media was occupied with the Gore v. Bush supreme court decision.
And Jackson, regarding your comment : "Oh, those dems--have we heard of Pelosi, or Reed, or Obama, or Clinton, or Biden losing money in this economy? NO--guess they're not like the rest of us blue collar workers". You should know that the party you support, doesn't help blue collar workers like you. That's been their genius. They've managed to convince working class Americans that they are just like you. When the fact is that if you support McCain and the Republican party, it will be against your financial interests.
How this election could possibly be close is truly beyond me. The republicans have stunningly managed to convince people that the current problems the country faces are somehow not the fault of the people who have been in charge for the last 8 years. Yes, that's right, the housing market failing now is *Clinton's* fault. God only knows why it took about 10 years to take effect and just shockingly occured in the middle of the Bush presidency. It's truly astounding that the Republicans will not only make this race competitive, they might actually win it. And don't give me this 'Obama is inexperienced' crap. Sarah Palin makes Obama look like Ted Kennedy.
Thomas L. Shimek
McCain has NEVER been ahead in all the polls.
Remember:
The media is only as "liberal" as the giant corporations that own it.
Just wait until voters see the different ways the candidates respond to the economic crisis -- Obama (careful and deliberate) and McCain (flailing and confused). When the issue of the economy comes up in the debate later this week, you can expect McCain to spin around madly like a kid trying to hit a pinata and Obama to be cool and reassuring -- just what the markets need right now.
Why would anyone want John McCain to be in a leadership position in a crisis? Just ask George Will.
Republicans are excellent at going to war. It's their thing. But they put up a couple of wacko's for election this year ...who again seem to belittle intelligence and excellence ...maybe Americans are beginning to realize that it might be beneficial to have someone who thinks seriously about issues as their President rather than a potential moose hunting buddy who shots from the hip.
Americans from the top of Wall Street to the bottom of Main Street became addicted to easy credit--it's not just the mortgages--those mortgages and all the rest of the debt was bundled and leveraged way beyond their value in real assets to borrow more money to lend to the mortgage and credit card and student loan brokers. Wall Street have been the drug dealers and the republicans and some democrats have protected their deals. The republican mantra has been deregulation and small government. It had become political suicide to push for regulation or raising taxes to pay for the wild credit ride. There is no way that sanity could have prevailed when this philosophy ruled the day. This is where it ends. The only way to fix it is to let it crash and build it up with more oversight and wisdom. Do I trust Paulson, Bush and Wall Street to be the rebuilders? No way. Let it crash--no bail out for crooks.
DEMOCRATS have been the architects of deregulation??? Wow, that is an absolute joke if I've ever heard one. Republicans have consistently sided with Wall Street insiders to keep the inner workings opaque, consistently resist regulation and operate outside of the purview of the public to the greatest extent possible. Now that the poop has hit the fan and Wall Street is begging for spare change to bail them out, it's Democrats that are at fault. Holy cow is that rich.
Typical Republican spin-doctoring. Wall Street wanted to privatize their gains and now they want to socialize their losses. Republicans are even resisting Democratic calls to strip away those ridiculous golden parachutes these incompetent morons have been giving themselves. Lehman's CEO got a $22 MILLION bonus last year!! For what - bankrupting his own company??
It's time for some accountability - which Republicans clearly do not have the intestinal fortitude to deliver. Throw back the curtains, shed some light on what these idiots were doing, and don't ever let this happen again! Put a cap on CEO compensation, reform the lending rules and let's let the adults get in there and take care of this garbage.
I cannot believe how simple many Republicans are. How bad does it have to get before you can acknowledge that Bush and his economic policies have crushed the most powerful economy in the world - and that McCain, who has ADMITTED he knows absolutely nothing about economics is NOT the answer. Get a CLUE!!!!!
Given the near-collapse of the American economy and John McCain and Phil Gramm's direct culpability in this catastrophe, that this race is even close is testament to how stupid and misinformed a large share of the American populace is!
When you have 3000 A.M. band radio stations and three Cable "infotainment news" networks broadcasting 24 X 7 and pounding out the simplistic right-wing talking points on every issue and determining what is important and what is not, it's not too difficult to convince anyone of anything. I think Lincoln may have had it wrong: You CAN fool all of the people all of the time. At least in today's America you can...or maybe it's people like Jackson above who like to fool themselves.
Once again, The Boston Globe and Quinnipiac (aka Liberal) University are publishing inaccurate and old data which states Barack Obama is winning these battleground states in the hopes of influencing others to vote for Barack.
According to TODAY"S Rasmussen Reports:
"John McCain has taken a modest lead over Barack Obama in Colorado this week. The latest Fox News/Rasmussen Reports telephone survey finds the Republican on top 48% to 46%. A week ago, it was Obama who had a modest 49% to 46% edge in the Centennial State."
"John McCain has regained his modest lead in Virginia, where he now bests Barack Obama 50% to 48% in the latest Fox News/Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of voters in the state. A week ago, the race was tied at 48% apiece. Two weeks ago, it was McCain 49% and Obama 47%. "
Memo to The Boston Globe: the title to this article is a Blatant Lie! It must be changed to "Obama holds edge in 3 Battleground States."
somarp, the Glass-Steagall Act, which separated banks, brokerages, and insurers, and was repealed in 1998. True, Gramm first proposed repealing the Act, but Clinton signed off on it. You need to get your facts straight.
"....if you support McCain and the Republican party, it will be against your financial interests."
I don't know where to begin with this one. I guess Obama will take a financial interest in my wallet with his tax-and-spend "social justice" programs. Your financial ignorance is symptomatic of what's wrong with the big government left - actually thinking that government knows how to manage your money better than you do. Take control of your own life and you won't need to rely on government. Capitalism and small government have made this country great by allowing the entrepreneurial spirit to flourish. I can't imagine why anyone would want to give that up by voting for Obama.
T. Shimek, not that i believe the unqualified borrowers should be bailed out also, but the main issues here are with the people who gave those loans and made money hand over foot and sold and sold and sold and sold those bad loans -- they should be prosecuted and the unqualified borrowers should lose their homes --
As usual the right focuses the blame on those with the least to blame, those minorities, sub-prime borrowers to be polite, that were targeted by the banks upon which they foisted their adjustable rate mortgages. Have you not heard of Alt-A morgages? These are PRIME borrowers and their mortgages are resetting now...they are mostly white people...OK??? satisfied??? Now they are going into default...and the business of CDOs and CDS's is just now getting to hit the front pages which have NOTHING to do with minorities and other scapegoats but eiverything to the GRAMM/McCAIN deregulation of the entire financial system beginning with Reagan...but you see, I don't have 3000 a.m. radio stations and 3 infotainment cable tv networks to shout at you all day and night about ALT A or CDOs or CDSs. So keep blaming minorities for all of your troubles...keep scapegoating them,,,,keep believing FOX, Howie Carr, and anyone else that panders to your narrative....that's the American way...always think the LIBERAL media is fooling you...don't ever think, evne for a moment, that the LIBERAL media may just be right, this time.
These Polls do not take into account the number of newly registered democrats, because they use the names from a pool they created from previous exit polls when they conduct the new polls. I think they are seriously missing the boat on these polls, even with their margin of error. With this in mind, I think Obama will be elected by a much larger margin of victory than the pundits realize. They are not even considering Mississippi which recently elected a Democrat to the US Congress, & had an unprecedented voter registration for the democratic party. The same goes for Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, & Virginia. I am astounded that the Republican Machine seems to be going along with the poll numbers, or maybe they ae actually aware & still prefer the Rovian approach to elections. I think the majority of Americans & especially the newly registered voters have had enough of the Rove System. Until someone tells me the pollsters are in fact contacting these new voters, I don't put any creedence into the current polls
"...where he now bests Barack Obama 50% to 48% in the latest Fox News/Rasmussen Reports..."
There's your answer. The reason he's up in those states according to that poll is because Fox News is conducting that poll (polling the more conservative regions of the state, no doubt...)
We are so fortunate to live in a country with a spirited, real election for president. What an exciting race this is! And with the internet we can get all kinds of information, although one needs to carefully consider the sources. Also, I'm proud of my fellow Americans for not seeming to care much about race. Yeaah! I'm a lifelong registered Democrat. I first voted in 1972. But as the years went by and the promising social programs failed, I became more conservative with the passing years. Now I'm right smack dab with McCain on most issues. I am sincerely, very excited about what reforms McCain and Palin can implement.
As a Marine and Vietnam vet. I must say that the american people are afraid of the simplest of things. America doesn't bother you the John McCain is to old to put
our lives in his trembling hand that causes him to suffer a disabling disease called PTSD. In AA is another term called a "dry drunk". John McCain is not fit
to be president?? When John McCain can't remember how many houses he has
or how many cars he got or that he had affair with cindy after he left his wife for her,
it is called in the medical fields as "dementia". So America is this the man you want guarding our country ?? I for one don't think so and i trust you won't either.
McCain was smart to distance himself from Bush, then he got smarter and started to distance himself from the Republican party. By November he'll be so distant he'll have to call himself "The Original LIBERAL Maverick"!
McCain's current campaign strategy is to earn money with the Sarah Palin freak show and try to look like he can hold his own pants up while he copies Obama's positions on all the issues.
McCain position is so shaky he has to change it hourly! His position is shakier than Cindy McCain was back when she used fake prescriptions and a doctor at the charity she bankrolled to get her Vicodin and Percocet. To be fair, she was under stress from the Senate investigation on her husband's intervention with regulators on behalf of savings-and-loan owner Charles Keating -- never fear, the same Washington powerhouse lawyer got both McCain "mavericks" off without jail time! They should send that guy up to Alaska to help bury the Sarah Palin ethics investigation!
Speaking of 2000, McCain was correct 8 years ago when he said (see the interview on You-tube) that he would be too old to run in 2008. People may have been dumb enough to vote for Bush twice, but 3 times is too much.
America knows the type of people hiding behind all those "Good Old Boy" narratives. The enemy is not the Republicans, but the undying crumbs and rotting corpses of the NIxon era. Money and power is all they crave. Now they're scrambling for cover so fast even Newt Gingrich is meekly whimpering, "I don’t think the taxpayers should be socked for $700 billion for welfare for Wall Street."
My fellow Americans, you can put lipstick on Nixon and Agnew and call them McCain and Palin, but you cannot suppress 50 years stench of the likes of Rove and Ken Khachigian and Westbrook Pegler, et al. How long, America, how long?
4McCain :
Actually we're both wrong, the Glass-Steagall Act was repealed in November of 1999 and yes signed by Bill Clinton. But nevertheless, the repeal is an emample of exactly the kind of smaller government/less regulation neo-con thinking that republicans are always clamoring for. So you got what you wanted right? Tell me this, are you better off than you were in 1999?
"Capitalism and small government have made this country great by allowing the entrepreneurial spirit to flourish. I can't imagine why anyone would want to give that up by voting for Obama.I can't imagine why anyone would want to give that up by voting for Obama."
And by flourish you mean the way our country has "flourished" for the last 8 years under a Republican president? Obama is going to lower taxes for small businesses and for the middle class, and has liberal social policies. Those are just a few reasons someone would vote for Obama.
