Obama launches anti-Palin group

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor September 10, 2008 09:59 AM

John McCain's campaign has its "Palin Truth Squad" to defend his running mate Sarah Palin.

Now, Democratic rival Barack Obama's campaign has its "Alaska Mythbusters" to go after Palin's record as mayor of Wasilla and governor of the state.

According to the Obama campaign's announcement today, the group of Alaskans "will set the record straight about whether Palin has what it takes to bring the change that’s needed in Washington, D.C."

Their first foray will be a conference call with reporters today, and the group is led by former Alaska Governor Tony Knowles and Mayor Bob Weinstein of Ketchikan, home to the infamous Bridge to Nowhere.

80 comments so far...
  1. They will answer the important question, can you really sling 'mud' in frigid Alaska?
Their nasty attacks can be labelled as frozen moose droppings...

  1. THis is as sure of a sign as any that the Obama campaign is in pure panic mode over Palin.

Of what we know that is true about Palin should paint a pciture of someone whose ideals, policies, values, etc are quite different than Obama's and Biden's and their supporters. She is anti-abortion/pro-life (pick your label). She is pro-gun/NRA. She is religious. She believes in smaller government and cutting spending. There are probably others I could list.

So why does the Obama campaign need "Alaskan Mythbusters"? Could it be that they are going to look for some dirt to smear her with? Why can't Obama and Biden just focus on what they would do for the country, what ideals they support and why we should vote for them instead of someone like Palin?

I will tell you why. If they tell the truth about themselves they will not get elected that is why. So instead we are going to hear about babies, expense accounts and all sorts of other irreleveant trash to keep the subject off of Obama and the truth about him.

  1. GO OBAMA!!!!! Get some Alaskans to say what they really think about Palin! I wonder if Anne Killkenny is part of the group. Google her, people, if you have never heard of her! She is from Palin's hometown of Wasilla and has some really interesting thoughts about the extremism that is Sarah Palin.

  1. A presidential candidate is hiring two former corrupt officials from AK to go after his opponents coffee girl!? Obama should stick to beating his "change" drum and ignore Palin all together. Taking the time and resources to go after Palin not only distracts the electorate, but it legitmizes her as a contender/threat and could send more women voters her way with the empathy vote. Palin could very well be the political derailment of the Obama train. I can't beleive the democrats have fallen for such a dirty trick!

  1. Why is everything becoming about the Vice Presidential candidate? To both sides, THE REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE IS JOHN MCCAIN, not Sarah Palin. I understand she's important, but she's completely stolen the spotlight from McCain, whose views are the ones that actually matter.

  1. Well, that ought to be interesting. Tony Knowles was ran for Governor in 2006 against Sarah Palin and lost. Sour grapes?

Bob Weinstein, also a Dem, has an ax to grind against Sarah Palin. In May 12, 2008, the Juneau Empire newspaper reported in the story, “Ketchikan mayor says bias shown in road plan” the following: Ketchikan’s mayor, angry about the loss of the city’s infamous “Bridge to Nowhere,” is accusing the Juneau-based Department of Transportation and Public Facilities staff of bias against his project and being in favor of the Juneau Access Project. “It has been obvious to me for some time that the Southeast Region of DOT has an emotional commitment to the Juneau Access Project, and has been driving the project forward through the use of what appears to be inaccurate, incomplete and/or misleading information,” wrote Bob Weinstein, mayor of Ketchikan, in a March letter to DOT Commissioner Leo Von Scheben. Sour grapes, part 2?

  1. It is widely noticeble she keeps repeating the same stump speech over and over and over. Does it remind of something how Bush went to war with a false claims on WMD...if you repeat it over and over and over people start to believe that even if it is lide as in case of Iraq's WMD or Palins bridge to nowhere. Seems mainstream media is in bed with Mccain/Palin and not reporting the truth.

  1. It is certainly not a "Set the record straight" in any way, shape or form. Nobama wants to dig up dirt, and if he can't he will make stuff up.

Keep in mind that a rumor against Sarah (which is 100% guaranteed to be played by the old media every 30 minutes until the election) may take several days to debunked. There have already been a number of rumors and outright lies from the Nobama regime that have been debunked. Watch for the final 10 days before the election. The corrupt news media and Nobama will pummel the airways with rumors which might not have enough time before the election to be debunked.

    Go Sarah

  1. Can The McCain/Palin Camp get a group together to figure out what Barack Obama hasdone in his past that would actually make him qualified to be leader of the free world? Should be a very short assignment - someone could do it on their lunch break,
    1. Read a really good speech.
    2. Wrote a couple of self indulgent books.
    3. Is a coddled media "darling"
If thats the criteria, then elect him. But lets fdace it, it isn't.

  1. Anne Killkenny is not a real person. She's a fake. If you look her up on people search she has a name and "undisclosed" address in Wasilla, AK, but that's it. No job, no family, no history. But then again, maybe she's just an angry freeloader who's hoping Obama will increase her welfare benefits.

By the way, if you read Anne's little story it follows the classic smear or chain letter format. First it tells about how much she likes Sarah Palin as a friend and how much she would never want to say anything derogatory. Then it rolls into ridiculous claims that a municipal sports facility put up by the state of Alaska is not profitable. Since when are state government projects profitable? Don't get me started. The whole thing is only convincing to those who are looking for hollow reasons to continue to dislike Ms Palin.

Obama and his campaign will promise you anything you want to in order to get elected. He cannot be trusted, nor can his "most influential advisor" his racist wife.

  1. To answer one question here.... the Dems need Mythbusters, because the GOP candidates use lies and inuendo all the time, Mrs. Palin is a dishonest, nasty, venal and powerhungry person, who would have women keep the children from rapists. Think hard on that one. It says something about her sens of morality. She doesn't care about women, as long as she´has power.
The GOP has learned their style from such distinguished figures as Joe McCarthy, Richard Nixon, KKKarl Rove, Georgie W. Bush, and their guru was Josef Goebbels. I'd rather see the Obamaniacs fighting back than taking it lying down the way Kerry did.

I say: Go Obama, take off the second set of gloves, dude, the GOP has almost completely ruined my country, it's time to get that party into the kennel where it belongs until they learn how to be civilized.

Tony, the fomer two term Governor of Alaska, gets his butt whipped by the unknow Sarah Palin in 2006, gee I bet he has kind things to say.

What about Bob?, Gee, do you think that since they cut off the funds to build the bridge to nowhere, where I'm sure Bob would have gotten some nice kickbacks as mayor, that he might have an ax to grind? Come on, that's the best they can do?

  1. Sarah Palin is outright lying when she said that she told congress no to the bridge to nowhere. She never said that. That is a lie she repeats daily. She is not against earmark spending, because as governor she has requested more earmarks per capita than any other governor.

The Dems need to make this an issue, that she is not an honorable person.

Oh, and to the knee-jerk Republicans posting here: pointing out the truth is not digging up dirt. She really has been outright lying. Go to factcheck.org if you don't believe me. Rather than address these lies, the Republicans here are doing the normal trash talking, saying how Obama must be scared. We seen plenty of trash talking over the last 8 yeras

  1. Obama needs to meet swift boat with swift boat, and illegitimate black baby with illegitimate black baby. Whatever Rovian stuff they throw at him, he needs to respond in kind. He needs to get down in the mud with the Republicans and not come up until he is victorious.

If the Democrats cannot win this election, with the leader of the opposition party at 80% disapproval, with 80% of the country believing we are on the wrong track, in the middle of an unpopular and bloody war, with a telegenic, articulate, and intelligent candidate, they may as well join the Whig party on the dustbin of history.

Palin swings away with the right
McCain jumps in and grabs for something he can hold on to
Seeing this, Biden winds up and lets loose a lungfull of invective.

Ah yes, a campaign about change.

    Small change, that is.

I am amazed at the number of "sincere" posts weighing in on this or that latest perceived or real outrage.... while ignoring the basic frame:
Strategies are employed to mobilize or energize the base.... or appeal to this or that segment.
So now we have Truth Squads.... in years past we had fact checking.
It would be a better process if "free speech" meant one was required to be accurate.
Why the press allows candidates to say anything and merely report it without pointing out if the statement is not true merely advances the fog of political war.

One benefit to all this crapola.... many of us, and thanks to the blog contributors, are taking pains to become more informed....

Hell yeah, Rudderman. Palin attended six colleges in six years and got mediocre grades; McCain could only get into West Point with the aid of his father the Admiral. I'm a high-school dropout, but I'd still want a Rhodes Scholar in office over another C-student any day of the week.

  1. The change you can believe in is that if Obama gets in he'll raise taxes on everybody and sink the economy into a protracted recession or worse than that. Higher corporate and taxes on small businesses will eliminate permanent jobs in the USA, and slow growth of new jobs, particularly median-middle class jobs.

I don't see how the Dems can be so blind to think there is a free lunch for all these new programs Obama promises. Higher taxes and spending will lead to destruction of jobs in existing industries, and higher inflation. A return to the Jimmy Carter years. It was a disaster, lets avoid the same mistake.

The key to fixing the economy is to balance spending with current income (no new taxes during weak economic times), get the defecit down, existing social programs properly funded such as medicare and medicaid. Only then should we be considering any new major social programs such as gov't assisted health care and how to pay for them without negatively impacting the economy or the national debt.

Obama's tax plans are a disaster for the USA economy. We need a McCain administration to avoid that disaster. This is the most important issue of the election, everything else is just noise.

  1. No doubt McSame would love to have the discussion remain on Palin from now into November. Much better for him than if voters look at the disaster eight years of Republican rule has been. No walking away from that simple fact, John. Republicans were essentially free to do whatever they wanted for six years as they had full control of Congress & Presidency. What did they achieve? Invaded the wrong country and bogged the military down in the wrong war fought on the cheap. Turned a surplus into a positively staggering national debt. Approved torture as a form of interrogation. Abhu Ghraib. Blackwater. Fannie Mae/Mac. Mortgage market collapse and bailout. $4 a gallon gas. All kinds of children left behind. And on and on and on....yes, no doubt McCain would love to have everyone talking about Palin instead of the Republican record.

Why can't Palin give unscripted interview with non-hand picked

Obama needs to call McCain out. John McCain is a dishonest, corrupt politician with a history of voting against the middle class. Obama needs to attack. He needs to go straight for McCain's throat.

  1. This election has already been decided. It's over. The winner is John McCain.

Take note of the difference in the McCain and Obama reactions to the crisis between Russia and Georgia. McCain instantly refers to "the invasion of Georgia." Obama says he wants to "condemn the outbreak of violence." The difference between the two is vivid. McCain, listening to his gut, is sharply blaming the Russians. He wants them the hell out of there ASAP. Obama is once again the "thinker." Careful not to offend, he refers not to an "invasion," which would imply fault, but an "outbreak of violence," as if both the Georgians and the Russians are equally to blame. And what does Obama's foreign policy adviser Susan Rice say of McCain? She criticizes McCain for "shooting from the hip."

Who in American culture shoots from the hip? Cowboys, of course. Heroes. John Wayne. Gary Cooper. Wyatt Earp. Matt Dillon. One can only laugh at the utterly unconscious inability of Obama and his fellow eggheads to understand their own fellow countrymen, let alone human beings around the rest of the world. All things being equal, who do you think most Americans would prefer to see dealing with the big bad Russians in Georgia? Barack Obama -- or John McCain?

So is any argument about who's truly mudslinging vs. taking the high road. So are charges of flip flopping. These people are politicians - they play the game, roll with the tides, and do what it takes to save face. It's just static until something significant is uncovered e.g. Monica Lewinski under the desk

Now, let me just say how much I enjoyed watching Bobama stammer his way through his interview on The Factor. That's what happens when the preacher is no longer on his pulpit. If he can't handle Bill O'Reilly, he certainly can't handle Vlad Putin.

  1. You know this wouldn't be necessary if Palin told the truth but she doesn't
-Palin says earmarks are corrupt politics but sought $200 million in earmarks while Mayor of Wasilla
-Palin is NOT a fiscal conservative: Alaska is #1 in taxes per resident and #1 in seeking and spending of federal dollars
-Palin does not support an oil windfall tax but she had her own version of this tax in Alaska giving up to $3,200 back to each resident....The Alaskan tax was called the "clear and equitable share" tax
-The $500 mil in vetoes she uses as her claim to fame as a fiscal reformer represents 2% of Alaska's budget (that is not a Maverick reformer....even Romney did more)

Could you please tell me some of the lies and rumors the Obama campaign has started? Thank you I am interested in understanding this better.

Maybe if, instead of listening to FOX News, which is neither fair nor balanced, you listened to NPR, which is genuinely both, you'd have actually heard Anne Killkenny speaking about her blog in her own voice.

Yeah, I know what you say next... "Thet librul laft-wang meediah put an acter in thar!"

Just because you're not paranoid, dear, doesn't mean they're not out to get you. Get a clue!

  1. DougSabbag,

I found it disturbing that you were comparing movie stars who are "heros and shoot from the hip" with John McCain's shoot from the hip style. Movie stars are completely scripted and have directors. McCain's shoot from the hip style is not scripted. Rather, it is rash (he admitted this in Faith of My Fathers). An example of this is using a Beach Boys song in a stump speech and singing "Bomb Bomb Bomb, Bomb Bomb Iran." McCain learned in the military to make decisions quickly and to use violence to overcome any short coming in planning. I know this because I was taught the same thing in the military. The theory is derived from Gen Patten's speech "A good plan violently executed now is better than a perfect plan executed next week." I believe this is why McCain shoots from the hip so often as well as one of the reasons he is pro war. That being said, We have had so much violence over the past eight years that I believe the country and the globe needs more of a thinker.

Finally, I disagree with your analysis of the Georgia situation. Like Obama, McCain also wanted to take the matter to the UN security council look on Youtube for proof.

    Regards,

  1. John McCain: A noun, a verb and P.O.W......

  1. If Senator Obama had real change, it would be obvious over Senator McCain's plans for change. He is still too inexperienced to fight this fight; how will he fight the fights coming through the White House?

So far, John McCain and Governor Palin look like they plan the bigger change if we continue our same destructive lifestyle of bondage and debt.
We are going the wrong way and we need to see it and get our candidates to see it..

Rebuilding the military, building alliances to fight other people's wars, enticing more people to enlist and prepare for war, and giving better benefits is not change. If we turned from our employment lifestyle that causes stress, pollution, disease, accidents, afflictions, wars and conflicts, we would not need universal health care, social services like welfare and pre-kindergarten child care.

Alliances would not be need if we turned from our lifestyle of building military weapons, manufacturing, processing, and transporting food, goods, and people around the world to creating a garden paradise that supplies our needs in our communities. God's plan is ours when we release the past polluting, bondage and stress producing lifestyle behind.

Barack Obama would be a charismatic leader who would make us prosper like Bill Clinton did; but we would still be working away from families, buying insurance, dealing with daily stress of child care, college tuition, sons in military, conflicts over abortion, marriages, and religion. There is not enough change in any present candidate. Pray for God's change and we will have it.

  1. cuzinjo, #56, that is the greatest comment I've ever seen! You hit the nail on the head. JR Pants and the rest of these right wing nuts watch the vile numbskull commentators on FOX, and believe everything they say as "gospel truth". I guess when people are that dumb, it's hard for them to understand anything or anyone intelligent.

  1. We have had so much violence over the past eight years. Dude, Where have you been? We had blood spilled no matter who was president.
I like how poeple bend the truth to make a point. you're worst then the guy your not supporting.
Are thing that bad today? Truthfully, no there not. They could be better. But, they could be a lot worst.
    But you won't listen.

  1. I salute Obama. As a Republican and woman I was insulted by McCain's choice of a trophy VP to sway women. It may be working because some American women are obviously ignorant enough to prefer glamour over substance, but it still shows McCains disrespect towards women. If playing the gender card is the only way they can win and they continue to divert attention off issues, misrepresent her record and sequester her from answering any questions, I'm switching parties. McSHAME and Caribou Barbie need to start talking ISSUES!

  1. If Palin can only muster the same old speech of out and out lies and not even stand up to CNN, how in God's name is she going to be able to stand up to our enemies?
The charade is over, just look at her record people and stop listening to talking heads.

Posted by Adnan September 10, 08 05:29 PM
  1. Adnan is right; Palin is a charade. As far as Obama's anti-Palin group is concerned, you go, Barack! You can't fight the Republican machine by being a nice guy. You can't even begin to say that if the situation were reversed, if Obama had picked a female Democrat who has never been on anyone's radar, you can bet the Republicans would pick her apart so there wouldn't even be bones left.

  1. Psycho Sarah is finally getting exposed and even the heaviest Kool-Aid drinking GOP stormtrooper brownshirt true believer types are starting to get jittery. Either their entire philosophy of Conservatism is a sham or there simply aren't any Americans good enough not to fail the Party. Palin is the psycho who to this day is trying to get paybacks on her brother in law-is that rational? No. And she lies about things that are easily shown to be lies, I guess because they know the real GOP people will believe anything they say. Dippy Doc still thinks Obama's economic plan will crash the economy, after eight years of Bush policy and before that 12 years of Reagan Bush destroying American industry and sending our production overseas. Now we have no industry and the Chinese are eating our lunch. Our only break was the brief Clinton years, which were constatnly stymied by GOP obstinacy.

  1. Ring......Ring......Ring (hear that phone ringing)

It's the American people and they want the election issues back.

John McCain wants to talk pigs and lipstick because he falls on the BUSH side of all the issues. Notice all of the people that are offended were never going to vote for Obama anyway.

Anyone notice that McCain used the same pig/lipstick joke on Hillary and she didn't whine like a baby. I thought Sarah was a Barracuda???

  1. Governor Palin has two sets of problems. First, the National Enquirer is now capitalizing on their previously scooping the world with the John Edwards love scandal, by now looking at all the things Governor Palin specifically said to not look at. The Enquirer doesn't mind publishing things based on somewhat-corroborated rumor. The Enquirer is already a bunch of small-minded miserable excuses for humanity, so they don't particularly mind being called the same. Muck sells.

Second, all these verifiable crazy things coming out of Alaska! They're not as lurid as the worst rumors, but they're not refutable either.

  1. Obama needs to be careful.
McCain might send out truth squads to visit Kenya, Thailand, Hawaii and a few Chicago prisons (wherein reside a few former Obama associates).
Obama wants a 'truth squad' he would not recognise the truth if it jumped up and bit him in the face. We might 'think' we know him but we only know what he 'wants' us to know. The man is a creation of the corrupt Chicago political machine and that socialist George Soros, destroying anyone who gets in their way, power above all else. Not only sickening but frightening too. America should pray it never happens that Obama takes the White House and if he should, well God help us all.

  1. Go get the facts. We want to know the truth. This is a Democratic party with energy and backbone. We will fight them with the one weapon they don't have: The Truth!

  1. Tha Alaska Mythbusters is necessary. Obama have to get off that high road and attack those extremists. The republicans will destroy America if Americans continue to respond to its racist principles. What is blue-coller voters, isn't that saying racist whites who are still able to remember their grandparents and parents telling them that Blacks are less than human. Look at CNN, all you will find is older Americans talking about not being able to vote for Obama for one reason, there are older. Remainder to American voters, China is now a world power and is buying out America in great numbers. Keep thinking your white skill is superior and watch America decline.

  1. How about if we are Anti Palin simply because it's the right thing to do. I did not support Hilary. I'm not a bleeding heart liberal. I do not have a problem with hunting or guns or drilling for oil in Alaska. I wasn't even for Obama. I was going to protest vote for Ron Paul or Ralph Nadar or write in for no other reason than I have a right to vote and I was going to exercise that right. But then the Republicans, the media, those crazy people who are being reported as supporting Palin scare the hell out of me. We always joked about SHEEPEOPLE but this national outpouring of support for Palin is wrong and anti american. If you live in small town America, if you participate in local politics you know that Sarah Palin is not ready for Washington and infact becomes nothing more than a puppet.. Good Job Palin supporters who believe in woman.. you are supporting a puppet spokewoman for the Republician Men who currently have her in the back room teaching her what to say when. Can't wait to see how see executes their 2 weeks of instruction.
