Obama starts ad on economy

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor September 25, 2008 11:20 AM

His Republican rival has pulled his ads as part of suspending his campaign until the Wall Street bailout bill is done, but Barack Obama is proceeding full speed ahead.

His campaign just launched a 1-minute spot, which will air in key states, in which Obama outlines his economic plan.

"For eight years we’ve been told that the way to a stronger economy was to give huge tax breaks to corporations and the wealthiest," a seated Obama says directly into the camera. "Cut oversight on Wall Street.
And somehow all Americans would benefit.

"Well now we know the truth," he continues. "Instead of prosperity trickling down, pain has trickled up. We need to change direction. Now.

"I’m Barack Obama. Here’s what I’ll do as president: End the Wall Street free-for-all with commonsense safeguards that put homeowners and struggling families first -- not corporate greed and CEO bonuses. Jump start our economy with a middle-class tax cut, paid for by closing special interest group loopholes. Get serious about energy independence. A 10-year mission to create millions of good paying jobs by investing in made-in-America energy and infrastructure. You can read my whole plan to rebuild our economy on our website, Barackobama.com.

"It’s time to get our economy back on track and put the middle class first again," he concludes. "And that’s why I approve this message."

  1. Not true about McCain pulling ads. Anyone watching the Today Show in New York this morning saw McCain/Palin ads, not Obama ads.

  1. Glad to see Obama didn't fall for McCaiin's "I'm not campaigning trick" when all he is doing is trying to muck up the works so he can look like a hero.

I actually would've been worried if he had been suckered in.

  1. Seems pretty tacky to me. He promises to suppend his campaign and now is going back on his word. HELLO AMERICAN PUBLIC, WHAT ELSE WILL BE GO BACK ON IF HE IS ELECTED?

  1. Though I still don't see WHY we have to "bail-out" the greedy fat cats and the people who wanted to get something for nothing by buying huge houses and not paying for them, of the two candidates, it seems to me that Obama is less likely to let those types get off with their golden parachutes intact. McCain has voted with and in favor of those same greedy people while the rest of us are just trying to get by, doing community service, paying our bills, supporting our troops by sending messages and packages, and otherwise being good citizens. NOW we're being asked to give "Wall Street" 700 BILLION dollars. What's wrong with this picture??

  1. Why is that republicans tried to get bills for oversight passed in 2003 and 2005 and people like Congressman Frank and Senator Dodd and the Democrats stopped it both times? Does this not make Barak's ads misleading?

Shouldn't Obama call out the senators and congressman on the banking committee as individuals who not only stopped positive change for America.

  1. Go Barack. For once, an intelligent, strong, cool minded candidate who can lead America forward. Let no on say that Barack Obama did not clearly articulate a plan for America.

    OBAMA-BIDEN2008 ALL THE WAY BABY.

I live in Colorado and this morning Mc Cain ads were being broadcast...so much for "stopping" his ad's.
His campaine manager Davis is sure earning his money from Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and John Mc Cain......I mean cancel the debate so Sarah won't have to .face Jo Biden....What a smoke screen.....I think the American voter is starting to wise up to there tactics.....I certainly hope so.....

  1. Good one! While McCain is taking a breather from this arduous campaign, not being able to concentrate on more than one thing at a time, Obama shows us that he can help solve the financial crisis AND run for president.

  1. Stuff it Obama.

We, the taxpayers, pay you $160,000 as a US Senator. Why don't you go to work in your office and help fix this mess brought on us by BOTH Democrats and Republicans? Focus on THE MOST pressing issue in front of us, not on yourself.

Maybe you don't know how to fix the problem. Maybe you don't have the leadership skills to pull together a bipartisan approach to problem solving. Maybe it really is true and this voyage for the presidency is all about you and you alone.

I was one of those 18% Undecided voters and live in PA (a battleground state). But I'm no longer undecided.

  1. Great message. Great vision for the future. Great leadership.

    Obama = American People First

    McCain = Country Club First

  1. As I have suggested before, it would make the ad more effective if highlights from the message were in print on the screen (e.g., "middle-class tax cuts"). Anyone who hits the mute button loses the whole message. McCain puts his ideas into print on the screen. They leave a lasting impression. I am a teacher, and I know that the more senses that are involved, the more likely the student will remember the lesson.

  1. The current economic problems are actually 9 years in the making. President Clinton signed legislation that repealed the Glass-Steagall Act in 1999. The G-S Act, passed in the 1930's to prevent bank speculation, would have prevented the CDO's and other risky investments that are the root of our problems. Both sides are to blame for the 1999 mess since it passed the house and senate by a huge margin and was signed and touted by Clinton.

However, one interesting note is that Joe Biden voted to repeal the regulations, John McCain did not. Why doesn't the press talk about this?

  1. President Bush, "the Worst President in history" is able to manage two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, deal with the invasion of Georgia by Russia, the devastation in the Texas and Louisiana by a hurricane, Korea reactivating their nuclear program, etc. McCain did not even read the three page proposal until Tuesday. He then suspends his campaign “to provide leadership”? McCain has exposed the limits of his myopic mentality. If he honestly believes that the condition of the United States of America is more important than the campaign, he should give his concession speech today.

  1. McCain is such a loser! no wonder he only says three things in his speeches

    1. i am a POW

    2. the SURGE

    3. DRILL now

i hope America will not buy his antics

  1. Dear Barack Obama,
I am sure that God is raising you in a times like to bring change to this God own country-America. I would like to advise that the secret to this change you having been talking about likes in absloute trust and sublime faith in God. Remember the very foundation of the American people as established by your founding fathers was "IN GOD WE TRUST." America would bounce back very shortly, only return bck the ideals of your founding fathers and build on those godly philosophy. Surely, America would overcome tis crisis precipitated by satanists.

  1. custerjs, you are a total fool! McCain suspended his campaign and his ads are all over the tv today! Get a grip! Stop being led around on a leash by the McCain Lying Machine

  1. Isaac,

Ask God to teach you how to spell.. I mean you obv want to express yourself and spread God's word online. What that has to do with our economy I have no idea though buddy... if it does, ask your friend God to fix the economy please.

    Everyone else,
We are in this mess like so many others because the Republican dominated executive and legislative branches of our government have followed conservative doctorine to the T!

No regulation, complete hands off approach to the economy, no oversight in congress(unitl dems gained control...), do what we want diplomacy and a drill baby drill philosophy while trying to ban stem-cell research and gay marriage. There is no mystery as to how we got here... so there should not be a mystery as to how we get out. CHANGE

    OBAAAAAAMA!

  1. I am very sad that my candidate, John McCain is not speaking the same language. Deregulation got us into this mess and now McCain wants to get us out? What is going on in the world?

Obama you have my vote. I hope you someday to call you Mr. President and I hope you will not let us down like the others have done.

    Good luck!!!
