Palin: Help me fight 'lies'
It turns out there is, in fact, something Democrats and Republicans agree on regarding last night's barnburner by Sarah Palin: It's a great fund-raising tool.
This morning, Barack Obama's campaign manager, David Plouffe, asked supporters to contribute so Democrats could fight back against what he called the Republicans' "negative, cynical" attacks. Now John McCain's campaign has sent around an email from Palin asking supporters to help fight the Democrats' "vicious" attacks.

"As you've seen this week, the Obama/Biden Democrats have been vicious in their attacks directed toward me, my family, and John McCain," she wrote. "The misinformation and flat-out lies must be corrected."
Because McCain accepted public financing, he cannot accept private contributions, so Palin's appeal asks backers to contribute to McCain-Palin Victory 2008, a fund-raising arrangement that allows the Republican Party to collect and spend money on the ticket's behalf.
"John McCain and I are ready to shake up Washington, ready to challenge the status quo, to serve the common good, and to leave this nation better than we found it," Palin writes. "If you elect us as the next president and vice president of the United States, I promise you our country will always come first."
UPDATE: Obama spokesman Bill Burton responds forcefully: "The only 'flat-out lie' is this ridiculous claim, and it proves that John McCain has wasted no time in teaching Sarah Palin the ways of the Washington he's inhabited for the last twenty-six years. The continued dishonesty and divisiveness from John McCain’s campaign has made a complete mockery of the reform and bipartisanship he'll boast about tonight, and it's not the change we need to bring this country together around an agenda to create new jobs, cut taxes for middle-class families, and make us independent of foreign oil."

Viscious by saying that they would not comment on Sarah Palin's family issues because every family in America has issues and nobody's perfect. How dare they!
Lies can do damage, but they can also give you the opportunity to say more about you and the issue. That is why attacking your enemy can be dangerous. When attacked, fight back with truth, the cheapest way you can... usually with the media itself.
Ummmmm, Washington Elite ??? That would be the Republicans who have controlled the White House for the past 8 years with an obliging Congress for 6 of those years. During that time, we've been attacked, never found the mastermind of that attack, invaded a sovereign country with no ties to the terrorists who attacked us, saw terrorists stream into Iraq hell-bent on killing our soldiers after we failed to protect the Iraqi border, had over 4,500 of our bravest young men and women massacred, watched our global influence slowly ebb, watched billions of dollars a month seep into the sand of Iraq........and you want to give those same people ANOTHER 4 years in the White House to carry forth GWBush's failed legacy ??.........Gullible Republicans were fooled once in 2000, fooled again in 2004, and now apparently want to become certifiable ignoramuses. Go ahead folks........tell GWBush that his 8 years were a success by electing another Republican neocon wingnut.........I am disgusted with Republican smears even as they take NO responsibility for the last 8 years....the most damaging 8 years in the history of this country.
Obama camp is desperate. They didn't expect Sarah Palin to give great speech last night.
Obama camp has been stunned since McCain announced his VP.
Yep, I did get the email from Dean and Obama camp. I contributed to Hillary and they must have got my email from there.
No money to Obama. Contibuted to McCain though.
Here is the truth, Governor Palin family and experience shouldn' t be the key topic of this political race. However, She isn't Hillary Clinton and she is out of touch with what is going in the common average house holds. Governor Palin needs to talk about the important issues and how she and Senator McCain will make a difference in people lives. Governor Palin is tough around the repulican party. Governor Palin wouldn't last 10 minutes is a debt with me or the enviroment that I come from. I'm mom of three children and I attend school and work. Community Service is important for people in the cities and neighborhood when politicians aren't concerned about getting the job done. If any one wants to know Governor Palin history on how she Goverened Alaska just do your homework. She is just like Senator McCain and George Bush. Governor Palin is looking out for the oil buddies who going to make her rich and successful. Sometimes you have to sell your soul to get what you want. she doesn't know anything about Barack Obama or McCain. Regardless of what anybody thinks this is still a Man dominate world. Its' like me playing football with the Miami Dolphins and expecting not to get hit as hard as anybody else would. Oh by the way! please stop insulting Hilary Abilities to the Moose killing, won't provide sexual education in public schools, abuse of power, gun shooting Alaskan out of touch with real women.
If you need to correct vicious lies, just rebut them in print, in the lettter or in the newspaper, OR appear publicly at a press conference. How does sending money to the Republicans combat the vicious lies?
I watched as much to the Republican convention as I could stand. I wanted to see Palin. I had seen her brief appearance with McCain when they first announced her as the chosen VP candidate. I knew she was telegenic so there was no surprise. I only lasted a couple of minutes. The whole convention is just so mean spirited. I hope the american viewing public will pick up on this. When you compare the tone of the 2 conventions it is so obvious. The Republicans are like a pack of junk yard dogs.
But I still can't get over the decision to select Palin. By their own admission (source Washington Post) McCain did not even meet her until last Thursday. He met with only once before offering her the VP post. My god, even secretarys are subjected to a second interview. (no offence to the secretarys). Also common knowlege is that McCain was not allowed his first picks because big money Republicans did not approve of his choices of Lieberman and Ridge. This is the classic Republican machine at its worst. Blinded mindless idealogues. They agreed on her because she fits their 'value' profile. Pro Life, NRA member etc. Absolutely blind to the real facts. She is a mother of 5 children. One is an infant with special needs. Another is pregnant at 17. Hello! I thought the Republicans were all about family values. How can they offer the VP post to a mother who CLEARY SHOULD BE SPENDING MORE TIME WITH HER FAMILY. What about their family values now. No they want the telegenic, symbol of there values but there are too blind to see that it is irresponsible to offer one of the most intense jobs on the planet to a mother who clearly should be encouraged to spend more time at home. This was a very bad decision by McCain and it reflects very poorly on his ability to make sound decisions.
And then there is Palin. She can stand up in front of all America and recite the Republican value agenda perfectly. Rally the troops big time. Cut to the family. Who's holding the baby now. Accept its late in the evening, with 10 or 20000 raving Republicans and the baby is about 5 months old. I think it is pathetic and irresponible to use that poor baby as a 'prop' as if to taunt the world to say anything. Well I am saying the family with real values would have had that poor little baby in bed. My God! And then they flew in the boyfriend who knocked up the daughter and put him in a suit. I think the whole scene is PATHETIC. I hope the American public sees through this charade.
Which brings me to the second historically bad decision. Sarah Palin should never have accepted the offer of VP. The paraphrase the Bible (that handbook of the Republican evangagelicals) What does it matter if you gain the Vice Presidency of the United States and lose your family. There is no way Sarah Palin can effectively raise a family as diverse as hers and be the Vice President. Anyone who has raised a family knows this. Her daughters condition is proof that she is already failing. Can you imagine the horror Bristol Palin must have felt when she realized that she would be paraded in front of the entire country. Do you not think there were a few tears there?
Please Americans see this situation for what it is; an incredible cynical and bad set of decisions by a party that is desperate to stay in power.
Barack Obama for President of the UNITED States of America.
Obama // Biden '08 !
Palin's lies about her flip flops in terms of earmarks & using her office as governor to fire her ex-brother-in-law are appalling, but she would fit right in with the GOP, as in Scooter Libby.
what attacks? examples... there are none! the only attacks i've heard have been from republicans since they have nothing else to talk about!
So McCain decided to get $80 million in taxpayer money for his campaign, and now is just running a private fundraising campaign through the Republican party??? Do you not see why Obama wouldn't enter into a public funding agreement with him?
It doesn't matter what Sarah Palin says. Obama is going to win.
Enjoy it while it lasts, Repugnicans. Palin preached to the converted last night. She can read words off of a teleprompter, bravo! Let's see how her wide-ranging experience as a town council member supports her in the weeks to come.
After the speech and reading more DEM posters, I am trying to find the website for donations to McCain/Palin.
Might as well give what I can to Mccain/Palin. If they dont get it, Obama will take it if he becomes President
That's fine "Independent"
I'm sure they'll be okay without your 5 bucks
Obama said her family was off limits.....She's crazy and McCain is going to regret this decision......What has turned me off the most about Palin, is what has come directly from Palin
I agree with Scott....there really is no other way to see the current adminstration enact some of the most pompous and disasterous decisions in our country's history and then just act like they never happened. The Republican convention was talking about change....change from what...their own platforms mistakes for 8 years? It is truely amazing to behold...denial is a powerful thing.
palin is a decent person what nbc, msnbc, cnn, etc, has done is disgusting towards women you libs make me sick,i wasnt going to vote but now i WILL VOTE MCAIN/PALIN!
Another 4 years to the Rep?
I doubt they will make it. Bush administration has been a total failure and the sad part is we elected them ..WOW
Here's vintage John McCain again circumventing the Campaign Finance law he helped to pass. McCain will do more damage to America than GW Bush.
I haven't seen any "vicious attacks" on Palin from the Democratic leadership, though many have questioned Palin's positions and experience, and tried to dig some facts out about her history. Is that vicious? She indulged herself in some pretty good snark herself, just last night. *She's* the one who called herself a pit bull...
Anyway, I thought McCain was taking public money for his campaign, in lieu of private. Help me out here...
Which lies are we talking about? Palin says she stopped the bridge to nowhere but neglects to say that she kept the money anyway. Palin says she represents small town America but forgets to mention that she left her small town deeply in debt. Palin says she is for family values but neglects to remember that she line item vetoed state programs for children and pregnant women.
You independents who can't tell the difference between McCain and Obama must be clueless. I will be the last Democrat to beg for the votes of anyone so stupid. Very simply Obama has rejected the disastrous Bush-Republican agenda, McCain has not.
Go ahead and vote for McCain - evidently taking your Bush bumper sticker off your SUV is not enough. Until you own up to your Republican president's and party's failures and acknowledge that neoconservatism and evangelicalism are self-absorbed, destructive political philosophies, you can't help America. When McCain does this, I'll honor him for his wits as well as his military service.
Actually, Independent (insert eye roll), the email asking for contributions was sent not from Howard Dean, but from someone within the Obama campaign so it's clear you can't even lie well. Continue your lying tactics because it will not get you any closer to the White House. Rove is going to have to come back and teach you some new tricks other than to pretend to be a Hillary supporter. Also, I have rather been enjoying the past week, which is more than I can say for John McCain.
Great speech? Anyone notice that there was a total of one policy position mentioned in the speech (a vague reference to promoting oil drilling and alternative energy)? And does anyone else find it odd that after the McCain campaign spent days criticizing the "liberal media" (like Fox News, right?) for making Palin's family life a political issue, Palin went up on stage, and -- gasp -- made her family life a political issue?
NOW the rest of the nation knows the Sarah Palin us Alaskans know- a tough fearless leader who gets things done- to those who think she's little more than a female vote-getter, You underestimated this well-qualified leader. And I'd be surprised if I don't see her someday on the top of the ticket. GO SARAH!!!
Here's vintage John McCain again circumventing the Campaign Finance law he helped to pass. McCain will do more damage to America than GW Bush.
The McCain/Palin campaign is desparate.
Behind in money, no matter how many extra contributions Gov. Palin's appeal stimulates, behind in the polls, as they were in the beginning and shall be forever and ever, and stunned that they will lose an election to someone not with decades of inside-the-beltway entrenchment, the RNC is pulling a Hail Mary with the nomination of Gov. Palin as Vice President.
The moose call to the base at Gov. Palin's night at the 2008 RNC, especially the hateful scripts read by Guiliani and Huckabee, had effects that will linger as long as the diatribes lasted.
The lies that must be fought are the more than one dozen lies easily found in the speeches of Gov. Palin, Mr. Giuliani and Pastor Huckabee.
Yes, Sarah Palin can read a speech that was written by the republican writers via teleprompter very well, kudos. But it would have been terrific if that speech had any useful information about what ideas the republicans have about leading America. And yes, it is stunning that McCain chose a female VP to try and get the disgruntled Hillary supporters.
Sarah needs to state when Obama or Biden attacked her family. They stated the families of all candidates are off limits.
Sarah and McCain however put themselves center stage and set themselves up for scutiny.
As a Hillary supporter, I am dismayed at the obvious effort to get my vote by putting a woman on the ticket. She has nothing to offer but mean spirited attacks . . . and the right number of X chromosomes.
Too bad Palin didn't use her time to talk about what she'd "reform" in DC. I would have liked to hear something about education or the economy. I wonder if she's going to fully fund the federal IDEA which helps local school districts pay to education special needs students like her new son. Does her commitment to life end after birth, or is she willing to help pay for the excellent education of every child in America?
I don't think they're particularly desperate. iTrade, a political odds-making site known for the reliability of its forecasts over the last several presidential elections, puts McCain's chances of winning at roughly 40% to Obama's 60%.
I think the assessment that Obama's camp is stunned by Palin's nomination is accurate. I think we're all stunned by the complete disregard and lack of respect the Republican camp, and McCain specifically, has for the office of the presidency. Claiming that seventeen months as governor of a state with a population 2/3rd's that of Rhode Island makes you ready to step into the shoes of the President is quite a stretch. Touting her part-time mayoral duties as politically valid just boggles the mind - the population of the city she managed would cover about 30 square blocks in any city in the U.S. She wasn't even a full time mayor.
She even lied about one of her beauty pageant titles, never mind Troopergate and her support of the "Bridge to Nowhere" project which she only abandoned when it turned sour in the press.
If being a hockey mom readies you to be President, there are tens of thousands of qualified VP picks out there.
I am 30 and since I have been 18 I have been a registered Democrat. In June I re-registered as a republican because I can no longer relate to the Democratic party. This is NOT the party that my family loved and I grew to admire. This party seems to be fixated on loosing Iraq and punishing the Republican party for their commitments to our foreign policies. That I believe is very bad for American(s). After last night I am more politically charged then ever in my life. For the first time ever I am donating to a political party, to McCain - Palin. I believe this team will reform the Republican party and make positive changes in Washington.
And they called Hilary the "B" word? Well, wonder what Palin will think of that moniker? I am a working mother, and if she valued her family so much, why does she put her ambitions ahead of them? Her little baby obviously needs fulltime care, and her 17yr old daughter is needing some attention too. Is her hubby staying home fulltime? Who's minding the kids? Forcing kids at that age to marry, is just not good policy! And, it's obvious to me that they are being made to do it to show the religious right that things are all "wonderful"!! If she really really cared about her daughter, she would not have accepted the nomination, and thrust her 17 yr old into the media spotlight!
She does not impress me or my friends and we are all 50 something white
working women!! Hockey mom? To who? She's a polished politician and a phoney who kills animals for fun! I'm sure the dems will have lots more to say about her and
her "accomplishments"! I hope the people of this country can see we will have
more years of Bush strategy ie, rich get richer, if she and McC are elected!
My family has never been so excited about a candidate - Sarah Palin is our pick - she has the brains, devotion and experience to help John McCain oversee our country's needs and more importantly to keep us safe in these turbulent times!
Super Star Obama doesn't glitter quite so much now, does he?
I don't care about her family. I care about mine. She is extreme right and the Clarence Thomas of women. I urge you all to look at her very carefully. If you are Evangelical, anti-science and far-right in your outlook on life (like the last 8 years), you have your candidate. Do not be charmed again...like we were with Bush. Voter beware: Make no mistake. She is more extreme than Bush.
Sincerely, God help us all.

What a joke. Obama's campaign has not smeared the McCain/Palin ticket.... the media certainly has directed attention towards the Bristol issue as well as her child with Down Syndrome.... Obama and his campaign had nothing to do with it... Obama has gone on record again and again saying that he would not accept anyone from his campaign talking about Bristol's pregnancy, or whether Sarah should be on the ticket as a woman with 5 children..... and Biden today said that he would not attack them but would rather focus on the issues. Isn't 'focusing on the issues' what we really want? Or have we become so entrenched in a media rumor circus that we will allow ourselves to deviate from the issues so that we can just shred people to pieces, with the winner being the one who camps out in the White House for the next 4 years?
BOTTOM LINE.... Quit fighting, end the divisiveness, and lets get down to business to begin solving the many, many problems that we are faced with today.
Gov. Palin comes accross as both a great communicator and a humble, down-to-earth wife/mother. I wish her the best of luck.
To Michelle Simmons, I went to public school too, but your comments are so incomprehensibly unstructured as to be ridiculous. Learn first, then speak...
Help me spread lies is what she really wanted to say. Can't wait for the October surprise and the interview with her EX BROTHER IN LAW (which is really the big get).
I am a Hillary Clinton supporter and would like Obama to know that he blew it. He totally dismissed 18 million voices when he refused to put Hillary on his ticket-
Now there is a woman on the Republican side something McCain would never have done if Hillary was on the Obama ticket- because he would have known that no one could have matched up to Hillary .
So obama has no one to blame but himself and I would call that poor judgment.
The country will go with that candidate who unifies us. no more polarized cultures such as the neocons insist we need in order to stir up fear and separation. If we express our unity, how can the extreme fianancial elite, the top 2% of the back board rooms, continue to control us? They can't after Obama takes office and we the people are once again part of the democratic process. No more phone taps on Cindy Sheehan nor arrests of free press. No more smug Fox news Our time is now and we will not be denied.
How could Palin possibly combat the "status quo" as she asks all of her elite Republican endorsers for millions in private donations? And what "flat-out lies" could she possibly be talking about? Here's a flat-out lie for you: McCain-Palin will put the "country first" and not continue the corporate shilling that has plagued Washington for 8 years. For all the Republicans out there (who are still willing to admit to it), when did family values stop mattering to you? I mean, of course, that George Bush has 2 alcoholic daughters and obviously hasn't been a good president. Of course Palin decided to keep her child with down syndrome, was she supposed to, ABORT it? Of course not, but it's just the kind of talking point that Republicans get all worked up about and love. Hell, if Obama adopted a mentally disabled child Republicans would probably have something idiotic to say about it.
A smart classy lady who knows her stuff! Come on Dem! Fight fair!
Trying to say she had an affair! Didn't Bill Clinton have numerous ones!
Beat up her family, lets pull out the skeltons of all the press, staff member and
everyone else creating lies to discredit her..I am her story is much Scandulous.
Seem dems and supports have to fight drity to win!
I am a democrat and but afer listening to all the left wing media from last few months about Obama is this and that. I have changed my opinion and now i will be voting for McCain. As Palin has last night, there is difference between being a commounity worker and mayor/governer.
---Two well written memoirs but no laws or bills? ---Mr. Obama?
--- Health Care plan is just cut paste of Edwards and Clinton? Bring some orginals ideas on the table--Mr.Obama!
Go McCain and Palin---Your work speaks for itself.
Palin is out of touch with "the common average households"? I'm pretty sure she knows more about what's going on in "common average households" than does a woman who stayed in the white house, whose husband tours the world giving hour-long speeches for 2 million bucks, and who has lived with more money than an oil baron's daughter for several years. I would say an Alaskan PTA member turned mayor turned governor could tell you more about the everyday American household than Hillary could ever hope to know. I'm sure, Ms Simmons, that a mother of 5 who also ran a city then a state, could probably handle 3 kids and some classes on top of a job. Her history in Alaska has been nothing but positive and improvements, sorry to ruin your argument. As for the "oil buddies" comment, no matter who gets elected, the oil companies do NOT pay the president's or vice president's salaries. You say this is still a male-dominated world; true, but unless you're a female womanizer, I'd be inclined to say you'd like to see more women in positions of power. Whether you support or hate Palin, if she gets elected she will break through one of the final barriers that women have left to face. And that's something she should and will be respected for, despite personal opinions on her character and beliefs. On the note of sexual education in schools, maybe, I don't know, the parents should get involved. My dad talked to me before the schools ever said anything, and that's what I plan on doing. And guess what? There are a whole lot of Americans who love the fact that she likes guns. A WHOLE lot. That she knows how to handle them and goes hunting takes her to a whole new level of "one of us" thinking for blue-collar Americans.
Here's your cookie "Independent " (o)
Now let the grown-ups go back to work while you nurse your little grudge.
To Scott (#3):
It's ignorant to assume you know what it's like to be president in today's world. With the blind hatred of Extremist Muslims and the greed of modern lenders It's simple and sheepish to blame it all on one person. The fact is, there are economic downturns in our bloated economy and their always will be, no matter who is president. For you to use this as a political distortion against your own president makes you a liberal weenie just fallowing the herd. Bhaaaa Baaaa
As Scott fails to mention, who has been in charge of Congress the past 2 years? I specifically remember the Democrats promising if they are elected they will fix health care, lower gas prices, get us out of Iraq, and fix the illegal alien problem. Here's a news flash: health care isn't fixed, gas is at an all time high, we are still in Iraq and nothing new has been done for immigration. But they have succeeded in becoming the most useless Congress in our history. They have done nothing to control spending, but increase the budget. They have handcuffed our troops overseas and drastically hurt our chances of winning the war on terror. Since when does someone that is not American, hates our way of life and wants to destroy us deserve the same rights as an American? Pelosi wants to regulate AM radio (violation of 1st Amendment), democrats are against right to bear arms, they want to regulate the stock market, tell me what I can/cannot eat, put me on socialized health care, eliminate middle class with taxes, eliminate any sense of wanting to succeed through their tax code. It actually sounds to me like they want us to become a little communistic. But, what do I know.
Obama writes his own speech which has been noted by many of the media sources. McCain has professional speech writers doing his speeches for him. This of course, holds true for the speech Palin gave. I would have liked to hear what Palin would have said, if she spoke in her own words.
The McCain campaign would have no substance without 'others' putting together the talking points.
Michelle, you make some good points. Your post also reminded me when you said it is still a "man dominated world" that Palin is actually being used by a man for his own political gain. In reality, McCain wanted a Democrat, Joe Liebermann, as his successor. McCain is someone you can't trust and who really doesn't "put country first" because he doesn't care if we have a culture war. We will continue to be more divided if McCain/Palin ticket wins.
Number 31 she did not say O'bama personally! But his supporters have attached her family, claims she had an affair! Where is the proof! They are are scared
Wow. The media attacks Palin's family with lies (and truths), and when she RESPONDS by introducing them to the real world, people criticize her? She did not drag them in, the press did. She responded in the best way possible, by showing them off.
Face it, if you're not a McCain/Palin supporter, you are going to criticize her no matter what she does.
You'll do the same thing when she's VP, too.
Mccain/Palin is what this country needs! I was a Democrat until the whole Obama/Hillary circus. Obama is all about himself!!!!! McCain and Palin are genuine people and by the way I love that pitbull attitude.
Leaving it better than they found it shouldn't be to difficult....unless thier tied to the neocon/big oil/military industrial complex that has trashed our justice system, economy and incurred trillions of dollars of debt. Oh, wait...darn it.
Republicans don't value intelligent, statesmanlike candidates. They will select a "maverick" McCain, a "cowboy" Bush, a "gipper" Reagan, and now a gun-toting, moose-hunting Annie Oakley from Alaska. They prefer someone who shoots from the hip and asks question later, over someone who has a more deliberate, measured intelligence. They believe the allegory of Adam and Eve as literal TRUTH, and dismiss science. The fundamentalist far right Evangelicals are their main constituents. McCain finishing 5th from the bottom of his Naval Acedemy almost makes them proud. The hypocricy is all part and parcel to their anti-intellectualism.
Wow, this is really getting deep. But my question to all of the Palin/McCain voters (yes that's right Palin/McCain). Have you seen the latest economy figures?? You better start paying attention to those, because at the end of the day that is what is going to count, everything else is hyperbole!!!
OK get the facts straight, the Democrat led congress has a lower rating than the President (I am no fan of Pres Bush). The Dems were in control of the White House and the Congress during Pres Clinton's reign, had Bin laden in their sights numerous times and could not stomach pushing the button or giving the command to push the button.
Gov Palin gets ridiculed by the Dems for still being in office with a challenged child, accuse Gov Palin of covering that the child is actually her 17-year old daughters and then spread other rumors about the 17 year old. But on the other hand, Dems say Biden is a hero for still serving his country even though he lost his wife and child (which is a very horrible thing to happen to anyone). Sen. Obama says families are off-limits but his Official Spokesperson is the one slinging the mud.
Violent protests by Dems at the RNC, some change there, a change you can believe in, ha no thanks. I was actually leaning toward Sen Obama until I saw that the Dems are still doing the same old thing but trying to cover it up. At least Gov Palin is an outsider and I will give her the benifit of the doubt.
Michele Simmons comments are uninformed and laughable. Governor Palin was extremely hard on the oil industry in Alaska and hard on corrupt Republicans as well as Democrats. She needs to get her facts straight . With Michele Simmons line of thinking it will continue to be a male dominated political world. I did research her background in Alaska, it's incredible with an 80% approval rating. She doesn't know much about Obama and neither does anyone else. He keeps changing his stories depending on who he is addressing. He's a total empty suit . His accomplishments as a Senator are dismal! By the way, get the true facts on her abuse of power. You won't hear it from the news media. Remember the Peanut Farmer from Georgia?
"the most damaging 8 years in the history of this country" - not as damaging as it will be if Obama is elected. That is, of course, unless you actually want to become just another whiny and cowardly socialist country wearing our bleeding hearts on our sleeves. Don't worry, Obama will sit down and negotiate with these so-called "evil dictators". I'm sure this "terrorist" thing is all just a big misunderstanding. Once Obama reduces the size of our armed forces, we will all start getting along. And don't worry, once he raises taxes on businesses and imposes "cap and trade" to stop "global warming", it will have the obvious effect of creating new jobs here ( there's no way those businesses will close up and go overseas!)
Palin is the perfect example of the usual politic...flip-flop and sweet talk to the gullible crowd but then you will see the real McCoy when they get elected. Look at all the fact. She would make a great CEO but not the CEO of the great USA. I am an independent and have not made any contribution but I will donate to the Obama/Liden campaign.
It's up to the media to somehow avoid being used for the soundbite politics. Stop repeating things that simply aren't supported by the facts. When candidates or their assigned talking heads repeat the talking point "factual" statement of the moment they need to be challenged. If the media is not there to challenge the statement then in any article on the topic the media needs to clearly point out matters that are factually unsupported or that are simply wrong. Palin's assertion of "vicious attacks" cannot be factually supported nor is it true, make her delineate the facts that support her assertion before you print it as if it were true. This type of politics has been tolerated and exacerbated by the media for too long
me
game theory of politics.
This is all about the Republicans stirring up the culture wars and once again trying their hardest to drive a wedge right down the middle of our nation. However, the last 8 years of shoot-from-the-hip-talking -directly -to -God -for -guidance governance, and blindly going wherever George Bush wanted to go has hurt our people. Our standing in the world is diminished, we are bogged down in an unpopular war, our economy is in a shambles and all one has to do is disagree and you are branded as "unpatriotic". Sarah Palin was disrespectful and can joke all she wants. She was entertaining for sure. But, I can't help but think that she was also disrespecting all Americans that are hurting, lost their homes, have no health insurance, and are hopeless. What will the rest of the world think of this
woman when she's not "performing"? The thought that she might be the next president makes me completely disgusted. THis was all done for showmanship and I'll take Joe Biden any day of the week as an experienced statesman worthy of
my trust. Contrast her life experience with that of Senator Biden and that of Senator Obama - who at least has been outside of the United States - and honestly ask yourself what the Prime Minister of England or the President of France would talk to her about? Moose hunting? Honestly! It's laughable. Had Senator McCain selected Condolesa Rice at least she would have been an outstandingly prepared subject. Or Christine Todd Whitman. This hockey mom and relatively
new politician doesn't know enough about that big world out there to be the next President, God forbid something happens to the top name on the ticket. We better all pray!
HOW ABOUT THE WAR IN IRAQ, BIG FAT LIE. Governer Palins speach wasn't all that. I'm sorry but if you compare Obama's acceptance speach to her's it's really lame. All she did was say how great she is, that she doenst' believe in global warming, and that her running mate McCain is one of the main reasons this country is so messed.
Republicans reminded me of a bunch of barking dogs in that convention last night. I'm not a democrate or republican, i think all politicans are full of it after loosing my best friend in Iraq.
I really do pray that Obam and Bidon shut her big mouth cause so far no one knows her and the media has every right to pound her as they did Obama and McCain.
Republicans are nothing but liars and it's starting to show in the polls. I think people really need to take a look at Obama's speach once again, I just did and it was very inspireing. He talks about bringing democrates and republicans together, not attacking them. He talks about the many issues we're facing and yet all the republicans do is continue to make comments that do not belong in a campaign that's so fragile.
I really don't think McCain cares about us, I honestly believe he has his own agenda and that primarly consists of using Sarah to drill in Alaska to make oil companies richer.
He has no plan and Sarah didn't offer any value what'sover at all. From day one she's been very negative and bossy. This is who will be president if McCain dies, god forbid.
I think he's a great guy and a hero but I just don't understand. McCain has been attacking Obama from day one and starting this whole negative initiative, his freaking CFO called me a damn whiner because of the way things are and insulted almost every American citizen.
Puff Daddy is even shocked if you look at his blog on youtube. What value does Sarah offer over any other experienced republican woman.
McCain needs to fire his campaign manager, he's really screwing things up. Did you notice how that convention was half empty, I really encourage undecided voters like me to take a look at Obama's speech, it truly is amazing and inspiring.
Good luck to all voters and god help us please. Right now there are hurrican's forming about to hit the US just after Gustav. An arctic ice shelf the size of Manhattan has just broken off from Canada and this woman say's global warming is fake.
PEOPLE, WE'VE SPENT OVER 500 BILLION DOLLARS IN IRAQ WITH ZERO ROI. I THINK WE CAN AFFORD TO SPEND 150 BILLION ON GREEN ENERGY IN THE NEXT TEN YEARS PER OBAMAS PLAN TO STOP OUR PLANET FROM KILLING USI know who i have to vote for now.
You are right Michelle "She isn't Hillary Clinton" Thank God! If I remember right, it was Hillary that brought up the experience factor with Obama first. Not wanting to be out done, the Obama camp tried to play the same game with Sarah. What goes around, comes around. Out of touch of what is going on in the average house holds? Give it a rest. Evidently you did not listen to her speech. But then again, you go right ahead sending your money to the democratic party. I'm really sure Bill and Hillary feel your pain, especially all the way to the bank.
You can hit her as hard as you like but lay off the family. When she bites back please spare us the crying. Besides, anyone who can shoot a 1 inch pattern at 500 yards and field gut a moose in 45 seconds can't be all that bad.
Dana
I am amazed that anyone could suggest that there were no attacks on Gov. Palin. Vicious beyond belief and to suggest that these did not come from the Obama camp is a little ridiculous. Even if not directly from him, they certainly come from his supporters. When has any VP candidate been subjected to this type of viciousness? Certainly not in my 50 years.
For those who attack her on the basis of science, perhaps they should do a little research and see what the founder of the Weather Channel says on the subject of (man made) global warming. And as for the rest of the criticism, just kind of ridiculous when you compare it to the background of whom you support.
I'm rather amused by the commenters who say that the tone of the Republican convention is divisive and mean-spirited, as opposed to the allegedly unifying and cooperative tone of the Democrats. It appears that one only recognizes insults as such when they are directed against one's personal beliefs.
Reading all this, I can just hear the Republican/Rove directive:
Go on all the blogs you can and pretend you're a disaffected Hillary supporter, former democrat that finally got their girl.
Wow...we are taken for stupid
Yeah Bob, common sense agree swith you. So what's your point, what if I called your mom a slut, would you be insulted, yeah you would. What you said offers no value, it's like tell us something we don't know man.
Their tone is negative and mean spirited unless you can tell me it's not. Not sure what you meant by your comment and btw, I would never call your mom a slut, I was using it as an example so please do not take any offense to it.
Spiro Agnew in a dress. The R's go green by recycling their 1968 rhetoric. Now all they need to do is slip an amnesiatic into our drinking water so we'll forget which party needs to be thrown out. Was Mencken right, "No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the american people" ?
She ahs stood there and bald faced lied about herself twice to America about her earmarks and taking money and theat Bridge to Nowhere.
These are the lies she will need help with.
I read through this and thought, "Where is the common sense? Where are people's political standards? Is there no coherence or intelligence at all?" To flip from Hillary to McCain/Palin is like a vegan starting to eat raw red meat. Hillary and Sarah Palin are 100% opposites in almost every realm -- the most important, to me, being, in order, true education and experience (a law degree and long distinguished career in law AND politics versus a BA degree in "Communication" from a third-tier university); realistic in the role of science, medicine and technology in our lives versus a "creationist" who can't understand a demonstrably clear concept of evolution at work; and, as the father of a young daughter, pro-choice versus the worst of anti-choice (that is, have the baby even if your father or uncle or a stranger raped you -- make a horrific tragedy even worse by being forced to bear your rapist's child).
As for "attacks," well, I think Ms. Palin kicked it all off by brazenly lying to the American people in her very first appearance about the "Bridge to Nowhere." Decrying the "Washington elite" and "establishment" while shilling for a man who has spent more than three decades in ... you guessed it ... DC. Claiming to be a fiscal conservative while increasing spending more than 34% (that's more than one-third, folks) in a mere 19 months as governor. So much for integrity -- so much for ethics -- so much for honesty.
Oh, and I'm a libertarian so no dog in this fight. Just wish people were smarter -- and more coherent.
Besides, anyone who can shoot a 1 inch pattern at 500 yards and field gut a moose in 45 seconds can't be all that bad.

Why have Americans lowered their standards so low?
#66 (dana):
anyone, male or female, who can shoot a 1 inch pattern (whatever that is) and field gut a moose in 45 seconds has absolutely 0 qualifications to be anything but a hunter/killer. yeah, the repugs like that stuff; no-one else does. i'll be pleased to see all of the divisive bs from the repugs go away after next january 20; you had your chance and blew it as badly as anything i've ever seen. get out of the way and lets have somebody who is intelligent and cares about those who are not rich for once.
Oh, that's just great! So you are willing to be taken in by an attractive, well spoken, somewhat charming individual who has the confidence and ability to deliver a impressive speech, but whose political ideology can't be further from Hillary's . I don't see how someone could consider supporting both these individuals, who are so diametrically opposite. You might want to consider what really is motivating you, because that glossy image will dull quickly as the very right winged philosophy and politics are dished up. Check out her record; it isn't pretty. Sue V.
I am on the fence on who to elect for President:
Can someone tell me what Obama has done to change America? I live in Illinios, our state is so corrupted by both Republican and Democrate politicians. I have a hard time trying to understand Obama's stance on Change. Obama avoided our state with all this corruption. He has only been a U.S. Sentor for 3 years and out of those three years he wrote two books (well written I must say) and campaigned for President for 2 years. He promises everything for everybody and we all know that is impossible. He did that very same thing in Southern Ill. He promised them work with the clean coal two days after he was elected he told the people in Southern Ill he couldn't do it. That was how he got their vote.

what does sarah have to say about the arial shootings of the wild life in alaska. i have heard that she has endorsed this.
i have also heard that she is not in favor of helping animals. is this true..
Can anyone name 5 things Obama has done that has "Changed America"?
I can't name one! How you Obama supporters.
The shrillness of the Obama supporters suggests that they think Gov Palin is a real threat.
Did anyone else notice MSNBC's efforts to blunt her impact. Between the picayune remarks about her pronunciation, and slipping in the caustic remarks of "Kline" the TIme reporter it sure seemed like they were planning an ambush and had to settle for nits.
Did anyone also notice that there appears to be no daylight between the "Kline" remarks repeated by MSNBC and the Democrats talking points. Is it appropriate to call it "media bias" when it is that blatant. Wouldn't it be more correct to call it partisanship.
Beyond all that, did anyone happen to notice what an impressive individual she is irrespective of her ideology.
I would like to comment on a couple of peoples comments. I already cast my voice on comment # 34.
# 50 Craig - I couldnt agree with you more!
# 51 germanguy - you talk about Obama writing his own speeches, that is wonderful but how can we elect someone as president who hasn't written a law.
# 52 Ann - is there anyone more bi-partisan in the senate then McCain, is there anyone more partisan then Obama. McCain has made a living crossing party lines and cooperating with Dems
# 61 Rick Great post, wonderful words.
I can't believe this fruitcake is the most qualified Republican they could find. Heaven help us if she gets her finger on the button.
“Do you believe we’re in the last days? After listening to Newt Gingrich and the prime minister of Israel and a number of others at our gathering, I became convinced, and I have been convinced for some time. We are living in the last days. These are incredible times to live in.” - Mike Rose, Palin's pastor
I've had enough. McCain USED to be a maverick - that's why I voted for him TWICE in the NH primary. But first he caved to the religious nut cases in his party picking Palin, who wants to fight culture wars while jobs go overseas, and now his running mate LIES about Obama and Biden attacking her family. I looked all over the internet and can't find a single instance of this - Obama even seems to be trying to call the media off her.
Enough. The John McCain I respected has disappeared. It's sad. If he'd stayed true to himself he could have been great.
Posts number 3 and 7 covered most of what I wanted to say. Well said folks. I will add this. I am an independent who has voted for both Republicans and Democrats. There are several Republicans I hold in high esteem including my Senator and former Governor, Lamar Alexander, who would make a great Vice-President. I was on the fence before the Palin selection. I am not a fan of Obama or Biden. I was an HRC supporter. If McCain had picked Huckabee or Alexander, I would have considered voting for him. After learning everything I can about Palin, I am now firmly in the Obama/Biden camp.
My parents are what you would call "Yellow Dog Democrats". My dad first voted for Harry Truman and he says that Bush is the worst President we have ever had, including Hoover, who he holds responsible for the Great Depression. They were both HRC supporters this time and undecided until the Palin selection. They are now both voting for Obama/Biden.
I know several other people who have made the same decision. Obama is not popular around here, mostly due to his connection with Jeremiah Wright. McCain has shot himself in the foot, though, pushing us fencesitters over to Obama.
By the way, wasn't it strange how two Republicans were channeling Democrat Presidents last night. I don't remember which one it was but one mentioned FDR in a positive light and Palin brought up Truman. Too bad they don't have any of their own they can use for role models. It is interesting to note that aside from LBJ, FDR was probably the most socialistic President we have ever had. It wasn't his philosophy. It was what need to be done to get out of the Depression. I wish we had fewer ideologues and more pragmatists now. If we did, maybe they would stop bashing each other and would get together and solve this nation's problems. This probably won't happen, though, as long as Limbaugh, Beck, Liddy, et. al continue to throw stones.
From a long time Alaskan.... Sarah was for the "bridge to nowhere" before it was expedient not to be. When she was mayor of Wasilla she received a record number of earmarks for her community, and then left it in debt when she moved on. She is against a woman's right to choose even in the case of incest or rape. Sarah has a record of firing people who do not agree with her politics. She is for aerial wolf hunting (shooting wolves from planes), and against the Clean Water Act.. She doesn't believe in global warming, and has the State of Alaska suing the Feds over the protection of polar bears.
These are her positions, but don't take my word for it, do some research. When Sarah chose to place herself on center stage as a vp candidate, she gave us right to know what she stands for, and whether or not she is being truthful. Discovering what a candidate's views are is our responsibility as voters, and shouldn't be construed as "negative, cynical attacks".
I lost count of the lies about Obama's policies (taxes, energy, leadership qualitites) that Palin told in her speech. She obviously has no problem being untruthful and mean-spirited. Be careful of her, America. Just because she makes a statement does not mean it is true, especially if she has something to gain personally by coloring the truth. It is too bad that she and McCain are trying to drag us all down again after Obama has worked so hard and so long to lift spirits, teach respect, and set an example of kindness and cooperation for those in politics. Palin just wants to undo all of that with one speech. She is getting far too much attention just because she is new on the scene, after all the other players in this election have walked the gauntlet for months on end. For all her taunting remarks regarding Obama's speech making ability, and community service, she should look in the mirror and ask herself if her own speeches are sincere and truthful and if her "service" has been self-serving.
Palin likes blood as McCain does; looking at her shooting those rifles remind me of Osama Bin Laden; In her church she said that the United States was sending troops to Iraq because it is God's will. She is an extremist. As long as we keep thinking that we can do as we please the whole world will raise against us.
The surge in Iraq is a violation of human rights; for the law enforcement to enter your house in America they need a warrant. In Iraq we just break in and we expect them to like us.
Palin and McCain will start the third world war.
Personally, I don't want to run the risk of Sarah Palin becoming Pres. Can you imagine, a para-menapausal women, with a special needs child, four other children to raise, assist a daughter in raising hers, a handsome husband running loose and she gets a 3:00 am phone call. HELL TO THE NO!
Please can you Americans please just get it together and see through the all the drama the campaigns try to throw your way to confuse you. Just look at the issues - your standing in the world. I know it is hard for you all to hear but you truly don't have much respect. I know you all like to think you do and like to think that everyone on the rest of the planet is envious as you. But truly the way you guys focus on bogus issues like some kids pregnancy, whether a wife is patriotic enough - Your economy is in shambles, you are promising things militarily that you can follow though on, all the while countries like China, India are becoming much stronger and other smaller countries are like Pakistan are arming against you. Please open your minds - get off the gun control thing, the abortion thing. These thing are truly side issues at this point in history. Neither candidate is actually going to do anything about these things in the next four years because the economy, and global issues will be on the forefront. Barack is an incredibly intelligent person -Please do not vote in more of the same with the MCCain Bush Palin ticket.-
sarah Palin is a very passionate woman and I applaud the fact the Republican ticket added a woman into the race. But really this woman has no idea, with all due respect about geopolitics outside her state. This is crucial right now.
Conservative Republican for Obama/Biden! McCain used to be a Maverick. Palin thinks we're in Iraq as part of "God's Plan" My God wants peace not war. Republicans are smoking some good stuff to think this was a good choice! She cut funding for special need kids...
Just the facts.
“So Sarah is going to help cut out government "overspending and waste". It is easier when the State of Alaska receives $1.84 for every taxpayer dollar contributed in taxes. I live in California, a state that only receives back only $0.78 for every dollar paid in taxes to the Federal Government. When the Bridge to Nowhere was cancelled, did Palin return the unspent funds? No, she spent it on her personal pork barrel projects.”

Did Ms. Gobbels-Palin want to have Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury censored or banned?
The Mayor of Mooseville, Caribou Barbie and Sarah Putin by any other name is flat-out, down-right, LIAR. Typical of the GOP, can you say, "WMD?"
Pathetic excuse for a candidate and now an action figure, but I guess if OJ had one so should Abstinence Satan, err, Sarah. But, hey, what's the difference?
Good evening. There are sadistic scientists who hurry to hunt down errors instead of establishing the truth.
I am from Lesotho and also now teach English, please tell me right I wrote the following sentence: "Relaxer ferrets can earn not like in their auditory follicles."
Thanks :D. Makoto.
