Palins greet McCain at the airport

Posted by Jason Tuohey September 3, 2008 01:42 PM

Sarah Palin and her family greeted John McCain at the airport after he arrived in Minnesota for the convention. Below, McCain shook the hand of Levi Johnston, the father-to-be of Palin's granddaughter. (AP Photo)

  1. I really like this picture depicting Palins daughters boyfriend hey every families around the world have issues similar to the Palin my family too.My sister got pregnant and have her firstborn at the same age but I stood behind her and my parents were not to blame.I don't belive in an iota the liberal are really serious nor concern for Brystols life and her situation its just a political jab.I support Sarah Palins choice as Mccains VP and her family the heck with the media and what they throw out there we took it from them I mean they ignore women and Mccain rescue them.Mccain/Palin 08.

  1. The Palins are guaranteeing a shotgun wedding by parading these two teenagers onstage at the convention. How disgusting to treat kids like this.

  1. Good example to set there. "Heckuvajob, Levi!", is probably what McCain is saying.

    Disgusting "family values".

  1. John McCain: "Thanks for messing up my campaign for the presidency, junior!"

Levi Johnston: "Hey, I learned everything I know from Bill Clinton, Teddy Kennedy and John Edwards.....they're my heroes!"

  1. Seems rather strange that McCain's campaign manager has been calling for privacy for the family, yet they're flying the 'fukin' redneck' to the convention. It's my belief that they're using the issue of the daughter's pregnancy as sort of a fire-break. I'm sure they'd rather the world delve into their personal spectacles than the world delve into whether this woman is competent or not to lead the country. Where's this photo from? A McCain staffer?

  1. Up until his Myspace page disappeared early on Sept 2, Levi said he didn't want to get married, and his greatest interest in life was hockey. I see that Mom has handed off Trig to Willow. This campaign seems intent on glorifying teen pregnancy. If they want us to respect their privacy, why do they insist on parading the whole situation on the National Stage?

  1. skmj - you still need to work on your writing skills!!! You're rambling again! Can't figure out what you are trying to say! Makes NO SENSE WHATSOEVER! It figures that you are a republican......no intelligence at all!

  1. SM, I guess it's unfortunate that he didn't learn everything he knows from Sen. Larry Craig or other closet-gay Republicans, then, huh? Then he wouldn't be in this situation, though that might bring up gay marriage issues later on.

But then again, perhaps if Mommy (Sarah Palin) taught her kids safe sex instead of abstinence only then her daughter might not be in this situation. I'm not against people teaching teenagers abstinence, but they need to be realistic and include safe sex practices, too. It's head-in-the-sand mentality if you think teenagers can override all of those surging hormones 100% of the time. It's too bad Palin's ideology got in the way of providing her daughter with a safety net so she wouldn't end up being another pregnant teenager. This is just the kind of leadership we need in the White House!!

  1. As the father of a teen-age daughter I empathize with the entire Palin family and the predicament they find themselves in. As they stated in their press announcement Monday, their daughter is now forced to “grow up faster than we had ever planned”.

I find it inconceivable that in the 21st century we still have part of our population not understanding the need to provide complete sexual education to the youth of our country. All schools need to provide accurate and informative sex education. At home, promote abstinence and whatever other moral teaching you follow but please make sure your child has all the info.

That Sarah Palin, as a public official, still opposes the sexual education of our nations youth is not only disgraceful but demonstrates her incompetence. How many other cases of “children raising children” do we need to witness? How many other young lives are to be derailed before they reach their full potential? Unfortunately some people just don’t get it, or worse, don’t care.

The future of this country and our children depend on us to make proper choices and decisions. Don’t take the responsibility lightly.

  1. Seems so much easier to say negative comments than positive. This is by far not the first or worst scandal to be made public by Government Officials. Bristol however does not seem to be running for office and I have not yet seen anyone that can completely control the actions or behaviors of another person. Yes, you can talk, teach and be a role model but even birth control is not 100% accurate. So why would you expect Mrs. Palin to be immune to this happening in her family? It happens all the time to other families, even with strong family values.

  1. Why doesn't the media refer to Levi as her fiance? They call him the man she intends to marry like it is in doubt.

Posted by SDR September 3, 08 04:03 PM
  1. GSM, you're missing the point. I have not seen any criticism of Bristol on the posts above. The problem is with Sarah Palin, a life long ultra-conservative who endorses the failed “abstinence only” viewpoint, and the McCain campaign trying to hide all of her other “deeds” and influence peddling.

If the Republicans with their so called high and mighty “moral values” fail to see the irony and hypocrisy of this current situation, they have fallen to a new low. You can not have it both ways!

  1. McCain is putting family affairs into a national spotlight by flying a teeanage boy to Minnesota for the convention.America needs change and leaders who are ready to deal with the growing threats not teenage issues at this time because we are headed in awrong direction. Sarah needs to go back to alaska and get her family straight and also start sex education in school. This is pathetic

The reason is that this is a shot-gun wedding! Let's not try to disguise it as anything but. The guy's MySpace proudly displayed his 'high credentials'. He admits the following: "I'm a f**kin' redneck who likes to snowboard and ride dirt bikes. But I live to play hockey. I like to go camping and hang out with the boys, do some fishing, shoot some sh*t and just f**kin' chillin' I guess. Ya f*ck with me I'll kick ass."

He also mentions he's not a marrying kind of guy. Oh my, what a classy guy!

  1. If Sarah Palin's family is off limits - what statement is she making by parading
the daughter's boyfriend at the convention. Shouldn't he be in school? And,
if he graduated, shouldn't he be at work - he has a family to support. Or does,
he just plan on drinking whiskey, swearing, and kicking ass the rest of his life.
These children (they are children) are not ready for a family. And quite frankly,
it insults my moral values. The Republican's want all these kids to have babies, but they are the first to complain about the welfare system. Which is it?

I do not know what kind of message Palin is trying to send to teen age girls and boys. If any girl should have known the consequence of sex, her daughter should

have - her mother just had a baby. Sounds to me, this girl is crying out for attention from a mother who is too busy, quite frankly, to be a mother. It's sad.

  1. Though I empathize with the Palin family, they're not practicing what they preach and it is setting a poor example. The fact that the daughter got pregnant is not the issue. Its the fact that they push their beliefs of Christianity, abstinance, not using contraception, and not believing in abortion on others but don't hold themselves to the same standard. And this is a person who could be second in command come January?
I don't side with the majority of McCain's politcal views, but I do trust his integrity, and as americans we should want integrity back in the White House. This is not a step in that direction.

  1. Who really cares?

I don't. This country is more concerned with trivial issues rather than important issues that could shape the future of our nation. What better way to take the heat of the real problems we are facing as a nation then to focus on some teenage girl getting pregnant.

This should be the next reality show on FOX, "Growing up Palin". I expect some cut of the profits Rupert. They can even film in the white house and let the kid live in the Lincoln bedroom. The evil liberal media is destroying this wholesome family.

  1. Bristol and Levi have both taken too many growth hormones, so that the press should ask them which brands they recommend for teen-agers. Levi's problem is not red-neck, it is growth-hormone neck.

  1. The hypocrisy of those comments here and elsewhere including the media in general, who are throwing the mud and then claiming to be sorry for the victim is incredible and indicative of their lack of humanity and moral principle.

According to the conservative ideology what people should care about (as you conservatives love to put it) is the 'moral values', the 'moral fiber' , etc of the people you are putting in public office.

Therefore much more relevant then the Palin’s out-of-wedlock pregnancy is how John McCain treated Carol McCain, his first wife and mother of his three oldest children. Why isn’t her courage highlighted during those heroic montages, after all Carol McCain waited dutifully for her imprisoned husband and was home taking care of the three kids. You see, unfortunately, Carol suffered a very serious accident and was left disfigured. Mr McCain divorced her after that and married Cindy, 18 years his junior, merely a month after his divorce. Even so, Carol has always taken the high-road and now at 70 years old lives alone 200 miles south of Washington. She doesn’t blame McCain for callously abandoning her but simply states that “‘my marriage ended because John McCain didn’t want to be 40, he wanted to be 25. You know that happens...it just does.”

It’s been reported that at the time of his return, McCain stated that Carol was “the woman he dreamed of during his long incarceration and torture”. Gee, I wonder if he’s invited her to the convention or will at the very least give her the credit she deserves during his nomination acceptance speech tomorrow night. What do you think?

  1. Hey, he wasn't lying when he said he's a "redneck and proud" on his MySpace page. Sorry, but this family is trailer trash! Americans said that they voted for Bush because he was someone they could have a beer with...Lets see if they've learned their lesson or will they be fooled by the Republican propaganda machine once again?

  1. McCain is using Levi, Bristol & the baby as political props. Staging a photo op at the airport is bad enough, what's next, will Levi give a speech tonight?

Conservative columnist Byron York actually made sense today at NRO:

"Perhaps I'm focusing on an irrelevant issue, but the presence, or non-presence, of Johnston on the stage tonight strikes me as important. It's one thing for delegates to be understanding and compassionate about the fix these two teenagers have gotten themselves into. It's another to actually celebrate it. And, given what we've learned in the last few days, if Johnston is up on stage with his girlfriend and the Palin family, and Republicans are wildly cheering, it will certainly look like they are celebrating this situation.

I don't usually engage in these scenarios, but I'll do it here. If the Obamas had a 17 year-old daughter who was unmarried and pregnant by a tough-talking black kid, my guess is if that they all appeared onstage at a Democratic convention and the delegates were cheering wildly, a number of conservatives might be discussing the issue of dysfunctional black families."

It's called hypocrisy, and the GOP is living it.

  1. StopTheHipocrisy IE. Post #23.

I am sorry that you missed my sarcasm. I am far from a conservative and thought that my jab at conservatives would be apparent. The Reruns, I mean, Republicans want everyone to think that the media is so left wing and they are ganging up on the GOP, they are actually pawns in a great scheme devised by the curupt Karl Rrove. The Republicans are saints and the Democrats are Anti-America, well thats according to Fix News.

    Vote Redneck in 08'

  1. One thing you can't hide is pregnancy, so the Sarah Palin and her advisors have wisely decided to make the announcement earlier rather than later. And who can control kids? Nobody. Not the Kennedys, not the Palins. Kids get into situations that get them married too early or into court. Bristol looks great, that's the first real smile I've seen on her face in all the photos taken of her. Let's wish her and Levi well. Of course she's worried, she's had an avalanche of questionable publicity and, at 17, no one is prepared for the onslaught of the hostile media. His comments? Not too smart, but then consider his age and remember what we all might have said at the same age.

"hostile media" plzzze! This is not about these two hyper-sexed teens, this is about the poor judgment of the two politicians at the center of this discussion:

    1. Sarah Palin’s “moral values” and her endorsement of the failed abstinence-only policy and
    2. John McCain’s attempt at capturing both the female and ultra-right conservatives by choosing an unqualified candidate.

Since these two candidates are well aware that if this campaign focuses on the real serious issues facing the country they would not stand a chance they’ve decided to make it about the same ol’ tired (but effective) tactic of personal attacks, the media, sexism, racism, you name it.
