Role of McCain campaign manager under scrutiny

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor September 24, 2008 11:52 AM

The campaigns of Barack Obama and John McCain are tussling over reports that McCain's campaign manager's lobbying firm had ties to mortgage giant Freddie Mac as recently as last month -- just before it and Fannie Mae were taken over by the government.

McCain's camp is attacking the messenger -- the New York Times, and others, quoted anonymous sources who said that campaign manager Rick Davis's firm was paid $15,000 a month from the end of 2005 through last month.

Its official blogger, Michael Goldfarb, accused the Times of another in a series of false attacks.

"Today the New York Times launched its latest attack on this campaign in its capacity as an Obama advocacy organization. Let us be clear about what this story alleges: The New York Times charges that McCain-Palin 2008 campaign manager Rick Davis was paid by Freddie Mac until last month, contrary to previous reporting, as well as statements by this campaign and by Mr. Davis himself.

"In fact, the allegation is demonstrably false. As has been previously reported, Mr. Davis separated from his consulting firm, Davis Manafort, in 2006. As has been previously reported, Mr. Davis has seen no income from Davis Manafort since 2006. Zero. Mr. Davis has received no salary or compensation since 2006. Mr. Davis has received no profit or partner distributions from that firm on any basis -- weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly, semi-annual or annual -- since 2006. Again, zero. Neither has Mr. Davis received any equity in the firm based on profits derived since his financial separation from Davis Manafort in 2006.

"Further, and missing from the Times' reporting, Mr. Davis has never -- never -- been a lobbyist for either Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac. Mr. Davis has not served as a registered lobbyist since 2005.

"Though these facts are a matter of public record, the New York Times, in what can only be explained as a willful disregard of the truth, failed to research this story or present any semblance of a fairminded treatment of the facts closely at hand. The paper did manage to report one interesting but irrelevant fact: Mr. Davis did participate in a roundtable discussion on the political scene with...Paul Begala.

"Again, let us be clear: The New York Times -- in the absence of any supporting evidence -- has insinuated some kind of impropriety on the part of Senator McCain and Rick Davis. But entirely missing from the story is any significant mention of Senator McCain's long advocacy for, and co-sponsorship of legislation to enact, stricter oversight and regulation of both Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac -- dating back to 2006. Please see the attached floor statement on this issue by Senator McCain from 2006.

"To the central point our campaign has made in the last 48 hours: The New York Times has never published a single investigative piece, factually correct or otherwise, examining the relationship between Obama campaign chief strategist David Axelrod, his consulting and lobbying clients, and Senator Obama. Likewise, the New York Times never published an investigative report, factually correct or otherwise, examining the relationship between Former Fannie Mae CEO Jim Johnson and Senator Obama, who appointed Johnson head of his VP search committee, until the writing was on the wall and Johnson was under fire following reports from actual news organizations that he had received preferential loans from predatory mortgage lender Countrywide.

"Therefore this "report" from the New York Times must be evaluated in the context of its intent and purpose. It is a partisan attack falsely labeled as objective news. And its most serious allegations are based entirely on the claims of anonymous sources, a familiar yet regretful tactic for the paper.

"We all understand that partisan attacks are part of the political process in this country. The debate that stems from these grand and sometimes unruly conversations is what makes this country so exceptional. Indeed, our nation has a long and proud tradition of news organizations that are ideological and partisan in nature, the Huffington Post and the New York Times being two such publications. We celebrate their contribution to the political fabric of America. But while the Huffington Post is utterly transparent, the New York Times obscures its true intentions -- to undermine the candidacy of John McCain and boost the candidacy of Barack Obama -- under the cloak of objective journalism.

"The New York Times is trying to fill an ideological niche. It is a business decision, and one made under economic duress, as the New York Times is a failing business. But the paper's reporting on Senator McCain, his campaign, and his staff should be clearly understood by the American people for what it is: a partisan assault aimed at promoting that paper’s preferred candidate, Barack Obama."

Obama's campaign accused McCain of lying -- and possibly hiding other ties with special interests.

“It is now clear that both John McCain and Rick Davis did not tell the truth about Davis’s continuing financial relationship with Freddie Mac, one of the actors at the center of this financial crisis. It’s troubling not only that Davis’s firm -- with which he is still associated and which the McCain campaign paid directly last year -- continued to be compensated by Freddie Mac until as recently as last month, but that the firm did little work and apparently was being paid simply to provide access to the McCain campaign," Obama communications director Dan Pfeiffer said in a statement.

“The question that now needs to be answered is this: did Freddie Mac or any other special interests buy access to John McCain by compensating top officials, including Rick Davis?”

  1. Wow, I have never seen the McCain Camp and the right wing media spin so fast. Actually if you do look at the facts you can see that Davies was a lobbiest for Freddie and Fannie and was being paid to lobby for them. Goldfarb is a known spinster and known for his slanted take on things.

For those who don't know. "The media" is really not on any ones side as the media is not one unified group. ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX and CNN all have thier own take to make MONEY. They find thier niche and report from its view, because it makes them money. These networked are owned by public corporations which have share holders which demand they make money for them. CNN seems the most neutral but years ago it was totally liberal like NBC is now. Fox is totally in the republican hands and CBS and ABC are just forgetable.

  1. So, the New York times lied, and the Obama camp quotes the lie.
“The question that now needs to be answered is this: did Freddie Mac or any other special interests buy access to John McCain by compensating top officials, including Rick Davis"

Oh man, we're in trouble! These dorks are going to be leading our country next year.

  1. Typical republical spin-doctoring...

Cite a totally unattributed report to claim falsely that Franklin Raines is an Obama adviser, then call it "liberal media bias" when it's pointed out that McSame campaign manager Rick Davis LIED about his relationship with Fanny and Freddie.

It's just like the naming convention for all the laws the republicals pushed through with Curious George in the White House... Call it the opposite of what it really does. For example, the Clear Skies initiative was really meant to clear the skies of birds by permitting unregulated air pollution.

  1. Mr. Stevenson, I don't think a categorical denial and offering straight up evidence contrary to the NYT story qualifies as spin. Seems to me your reading comprehension skills are lacking.

    Did you miss this part:

  1. I heard on a radio station that Obama had actually received approx $120,000 from freddie mac and fanny mae during the past 2 years. Unfortunately it was the tail end of the discussion so I don't have much more to go on . Has anyone else heard or read anything about this?

  1. FYI folks, a company cannot donate to a campaign. Both Obama and McCain have received donations from employees at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

If you'd like to see the breakdown, please google it. There are plenty of articles and other information about it out there.

  1. It is fun watching the McCain campaign slowly implode. It is also encouraging: this country is mad as hell and ain't gonna take another GOP ____job lying down.

    The tide hath turned.

  1. Duelling press releases isn't journalism. If I wanted to read this tripe, I would have gone directly to the RNC website.

Is this statement from the McCain campaign true or not? Or does the Globe not have enough reporters to actually find the answer to this question?

  1. 1. Obama received the SECOND highest contribution amount from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac employees over the past two years of all US senators!

    2. Franklin Raines, one of his closest advisors, received 90 MILIION DOLLARS in compensation from Fannie Mae over the past six years!

Hey- Why let the facts get in the way of another NY Times smear job that they call news based on unsubstantiated anonymous sources??

  1. Davis still owns a piece of his lobbying firm, which was receiving large monthly retainer payments from Freddie Mac through as recently as last month. Therefore, Davis as business owner was benefitting financially long after 2006, whether he was actually drawing compensation or not. Statements by McCain, Davis, and Goldfarb to the contrary are just the latest lies from the McCain team, which about a half dozen media outlets in addition to the NYT understand.

  1. They news is bias who cares what they write. Make your own decision ...
    Obama will never win...

  1. Franklin Raines is not an advisor to Obama. And, John McCain received $169K from Fannie and Freddie LOBBYISTS, Obama received $16K. Get your facts straight, REM

  1. McCain's a good-ol-boy, just like Bush. They don't do it for the money, they do it to be one of the boys. I honestly don't think either of them has a clue that they are being used. Rick Davis can make all the denials he wants to about his ties to his own lobbying firm, Davis Manafort, but most people aren't naive enough to believe him. Davis has taken big bucks for years to peddle his wares on his friends in Washington and now he's trying his darndest to pay them back. If McCain's elected, the same sleazy CEOs that control Bush will keep on keepin' on.
