Thompson extols McCain, goes after Obama
Fred Thompson pulled no punches tonight in going after Democrat Barack Obama, telling Republican convention delegates that Obama is "history-making in that he is the most liberal, most inexperienced nominee to ever run for president."
"Apparently they believe that he would match up well with the history-making Democrat-controlled Congress. History-making because it is the least accomplished and most unpopular Congress in our nation’s history,” said the former US senator from Tennessee and actor from "Law and Order" and movies.
Thompson also derided Obama's speech in July before about 200,000 in Berlin -- and compared it to John McCain's record. "The respect he is given around the world is not because of a teleprompter speech designed to appeal to American critics abroad -- it's not because of that -- but because of decades of clearly demonstrated character and statesmanship," he said.
McCain has been tested like no other presidential candidate in history, Thompson said, recounting the nominee's biography, particularly as a Navy aviator and prisoner of war, as historical photos appeared on a big screen behind him.
"That is character you can believe in," Thompson said, playing off Obama's slogan of "Change you can believe in."
Republicans had largely stayed away from outright partisanship while Hurricane Gustav threatened the Gulf Coast, but Thompson's speech marked the turning point into full-throated advocacy for McCain and attacks on Obama.
Thompson also joined in the defense of the vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, saying that Democrats and "their friends in the media" are "in a frenzy" and "a state of panic" over someone who has actually accomplished reform rather just talked about it on TV talk shows.
"What a breath of fresh air Sarah Palin is," he said.

Negative Mudslinging and Hate filled speeches at the RNC
I really hope that the American public realizes that the Republicans have nothing to offer or add to this election besides their tried and true negative mudslinging ways. The Republican cronies have no real ideas how to fix the country, why not you may ask, they like it the way it is in the country. If you had free rein over the businesses and government regulations why would you want someone to come in and clean the place up?
Think before you vote
Are you kidding me Tom??? Did you watch the DNC??? Yes, please, everyone think before you vote- do some research rather than belive the HYPE that comes from NOBAMA!!!
Go Fred the Messia is dead goodbye Obama Drama LOL
Democrats offer nothing but a continuation of the do-nothing Congress, a tax-and-spend liberal who claims to want change but only offers tired cliches and de-funding the troops, and absurd allegations that McCain is somehow a clone of Bush.
There's a reason BHO got no convention bounce and had his popularity peak some months ago. He offers nothing but an empty suit, hot air, and flip-flopping on almost every important issue he's commented on since November.
"What a breath of fresh air Sarah Palin is," he said.
That sort of explains where Mr. Thompson has been rubbing his nose of late. Old "Clean-as-a-Whistle" McCain appreciates it very much.
Too many liberal idiots like Tom voting for Barack as if this is an American Idol contest...voting for looks and style rather than experience and substance. Negative mudslinging and hate filled speeches? Do you mean BHO's last speech in Denver?...more hate, more socialist b.s. Tom, instead of voting, why not just start thinking for once?
Thanks again to all the people working at McCain headquarters for posting your party line comments. Business as usual.
Thompson nailed it with humor.
'I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.'
This is a quote from Obamas mouth.... look it up its in HIS book From Audacity Of Hope...... Interesting huh....
'There was something about him that made me wary, a little too sure of himself, maybe. And white.'
Just another "lil" quote from obama from his book From Dreams of My Father.....
What do you think............Wake up America this should be a landslide....
One more for the road from the rookie sen. Obama 'I ceased to advertise my mother's race at the age of 12 or 13, when I began to suspect that by doing so I was ingratiating myself to whites.'
also from the book From Dreams of My Father......
Dont even get me started on Michelle...........
"There's a reason BHO got no convention bounce"
You mean besides the 6 to 8 point bounce that he got in every national poll? I know you right-wingers are generally oblivious to the facts, but geez... don't you get tired of the outright lies that you make?
As another example, the continued claim that Obama is, "the most liberal ... nominee ever". Anyone else notice that's EXACTLY what the GOP says during EVERY election? I find it pretty hard to believe that for 20 straight elections the Democratic nominees have always been more liberal than the last. Just more lies from the right wing fanatics.
It's also good to see that Thompson didn't waste time in getting to the fact that McCain was a POW. Did you know that? McCain doesn't like to talk about it, kind of like Giuliani doesn't like to talk about 9/11. They can't go two sentences without mentioning his prior POW status, as if getting shot down somehow qualifies him to be president.
Horn - You might want to check McCain's record on voting against support of the troops in almost every way from the new GI bill that he did not support and did not vote on to lowering appropriations for badly needed equipment in the field. Waht about the sorry sate of Vetran medical care? What has the "Maverick" done in his decades of service to address that? The answer is just votes against proper funding for the VA. You should follow your own advice and go behind your own rhetoric. Do some research before you make statements about people "de-funding" the troops. What does that mean anyway?
If Washington is broken isn't McCain partly to blame since he's been there for soo long. How will he bring about change if he is part of the problem?
For the record, I did two tours in Iraq. That dsen't make me fit to be president (but I sure have more experience than that untried VP candidate) but it sure gives me first hand experience at how absolutely out of touch McCain and the repubs are.
Actually Tom, everything I heard tonight wasn't negative! It was the TRUTH!
Inexperience and slogans will not prevail for the Democrats. I believe Lieberman is only the tip of the iceberg of Democrats crossing party lines and voting for McCain.
I am a Republican and I am ready for a change! From an inexperienced leader such as George Bush. That allowed so many mistakes in Iraq, mistakes by his choice in VP. By his mistakes in believing intel about Iraq in the first place. By mistakes in not utilizing the Iraqi Military and Law Enforcement, instead he allowed it all to be dismantled. What a waste of time, lives and money!
I am ready for a change to a real leader and not like the cowboy that has been in the White House the past 8 years. Vote McCain-Palin!
I loved Thompson's speech. I told a friend in the room that if I had $1 for every time Fred cleared his throat that I'd have enough money to buy John McCain's houses. I'm not sure why, but Fred seemed to burp after he said 'humility' This must have been part of his Dean Martin act tonight.
I didn't enjoy Lieberman's speech quite as much but I did wonder why he noted that Obama hasn't reached across party lines to accomplish anything significant. I recalled the Obama and Richard Lugar (R-Indiana) cosponsored a bill to help round up loose nuclear weapons in the world. Does Joe think that a terrorist with a loose nuke in NYC is insignificant? That's odd.
Obama will will none the less. The Republican convention looks like a nursing home in Florida. Only with out the play hour. Which I guess makes Palin the nurse that keeps their tired hearts thumping.
Anyone can clearly look at the 8 years of Clinton Democrats and compare those 8 years of relative peace and prosperity with the disaster that has been the Republicans and George Bush.
The Republicans led by George Bush - if you've read anything about 9/11 - allowed a major attack on their country on their watch, invaded a country totally unconnected with that attack and killed thousands and thousands of civilians, and have obscenely bankrupted the United States with overspending - by billions and billions and billions of dollars.
Tom - You must have been taking a nap during the DNC or had much better things to do. "Mud slinging and hate-mongering"? That was the mantra at the DNC.
The elitist liberal press and Obama campaign are delighted in being able to butcher a candidate who represents "gun and religion clinging" voters. Are you happy now?
"...history-making in that he is the most liberal, most inexperienced nominee to ever run for president."
Hmmm, Freddie... I guess you never heard of John F. Kennedy, a one-term senator from Massachusetts.
And how much experience did Curious George have before he went to Washington to be controlled by Dicky, The Man in the Yellow Hat? That's right Freddie... A one-term governor from texas with ZERO national or international experience.
There isn't a single republical I've ever met who could attempt to make any argument without using prefabricated LIES and DISTORTIONS. And that ain't about to change any time soon. At least not with this latest crowd doin' the talkin'.
Obama's so called centrist positions came about rather quickly, about a year ago, after 20 years of embracing the far left, Jeremiah Wright, Louis Farrakhan, Father Phfleiger, Ayers, etc.. Everyone knows this disingenuous move to the center was to get votes ... not because Obama all of a sudden had a true change of heart, and abandoned 20 years of his true beliefs. So, why does a good portion of the American public buy into to this?
What makes these gullible people think that if he gets elected, we won't be stuck with a bunch of far left extremist socialist policies? After all, Obama has been the most liberal senator in congress, and Joe Biden has been the third most liberal senator in congress. Most, and third most, out of 100 senators are bad odds. Wake up American ... keep America strong, elect McCain/Palin to the white house in November.
We do not want another term of George Bush..if Mcaine is elected to be the next president of America ,because of his bad temper as a American Nation will continue tof ight war and war. that is exactly what Mcaine has and that is exactly what he wants to bring to the America people.
The Bible say we should live in peace with all men, that is why suprised about the so called America evagelical christians. In some civilzed countris the Chistians do not take sides, but here in America the so called Evangelical are for the rich people the Gop party, and some as well have never even been to church at all and some of them has never even opened the Bilbe since they were born to learn the truth..instead the listen to Shan Hannity and the other guy that just got 400,000 million contract on the radio talk show...The Bible say we all shall account for every word we utter on the last day..
The Republicans wants to bind the rule to suit their purpose, they sees themselves as the alfa and omega , it is a party that belongs to the rich...Democrats ...wake up and do not allow the so called gop to shout you down.....be attentive to their lies and attack and respond as soon without wasting time, and thei stupid advs will lead them to no where
if God is for Democrats who can be against them..Repulican is do what i say and do not what i do. Gop is not a sincere party and it will never be..they have failed and fooled the American people for too long now.
ken
Obama is crying about McCain & Palin using the word 'Change" in their campaigns ... but, in the real world, McCain & Palin have actually changed the government ... have fought political special interest groups, and brought reform ... have successfully worked across the aisle ... have brought us important new legislation ... while Obama hasn't accomplished anything ... and has only used the term 'Change' as a campaign slogan.
I may not agree with Geo bush poly;s, but compareing him with Obama heck of lot better. Obama has rose to fast to power, its just not right something is wrong. There is big money riding on this election and whose money? I hope people keep a pushing til something is done about all this illegal voteing and lies Obama spreading .I hope Fred keeps gong after him as well. Mccain is no Geo Bush he is his own man., i have really sit and listen to his plans , we can;t go wrong with Mccain, Lord people give the man a chance, and listen to him carefully. This Hillary demo is voteing for Mccain.
