Tight race in Ohio

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor September 15, 2008 11:20 AM

Another poll shows John McCain gaining ground in Ohio , which could emerge again as the state that decides the next president.

The Suffolk University survey released this morning gave McCain a 46 percent to 42 percent lead over Democrat Barack Obama among likely voters, and also gave him an edge on two other key benchmarks: on trust, he led Obama 49 percent to 41 percent, and on being more likely to lower taxes, he led Obama 41 percent to 31 percent.

The poll also showed McCain benefiting from having Sarah Palin as his running mate. She was the candidate who voters said was most like them -- 31 percent, compared to 22 percent for Obama, 21 percent for McCain, and 13 percent for Democratic vice presidential nominee. Also 38 percent of voters and 42 percent of self-described independents said Palin has been treated unfairly by the media.

"McCain is benefiting from Palin identification and empathy as well as a greater sense of Buckeye voter trust," David Paleologos, director of the Political Research Center at Suffolk University, said in a statement. "However, should the trust firewall in Ohio break down, it could signal the beginning of an electoral blue domino effect there."

The poll did include some good news for Obama. More respondents believe Obama understands and cares about their problems and he led McCain 40 percent to 29 percent on who has the best plan to bring jobs to Ohio. The economy and jobs, with 38 percent, was by far the most important issue for voters.

The poll was conducted Sept. 10-13 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

  1. An ignorant and uninformed public are as dangerous as ever to Democracy....how anyone could vote Republican after the last eight hellish years is truly unfathomable...as long as Republicans continue to cut education, we can expect people to say a woefully ignorant, book-banning Creationist who belives in the slaughter of wild animals from airplanes and the raping of the environment is 'most like us.' Alas, they are probably right, God help us!

  1. Look out liberal elite! Among Obama's formidable challenges, will be his explaining away his indefensible relationships with terrorists and America-hating pastors, his super-cool remoteness may just be his toughest. He might just be too cool by half. Also, what about these convenient Obama lies:
"Obama will immediately begin to remove our troops from Iraq. He will remove one to two combat brigades each month, and have all of our combat brigades out of Iraq within 16 months."
LIES LIES LIES. Mr. Obama does not know what he is talking about. Is this the type of person we want in command of the U.S. military? Obama was against the Iraq surge before he recently admited it actually worked. What a disaster he will be!

  1. Biscuitboy...you are a complete moron! You do realize that Congress...yes the Democratically controlled Congress has more to do with the last 8 hellish years then does the Bush presidency!

  1. Is it just me or is the Alaska governor more experienced that the top of the Democratic ticket? Why has the drive-by media been making fun of the Governor of the largest state in the U.S.A.? Did these same media elites question Bill Clinton's experience as governor of Arkansas (one of the smallest and least powerful governor positions in the 50 states. Alaska executive position (the Governor) is one of the most powerful in America (as is the MA governor executive powers). Did the media elite question GA governor and undisputed disaster of a President Jimmy Carter? Is Mr. Obama's only experience running something his running of his campaign? I thought he had a campaign manager? Who is this Mr. Obama? I never heard of him 2 years ago. Can & should I trust this unknown with the responsibility of the US Presidency? Wake up! Stop smoking pot. Think of the future of this great nation. The only reason Mr. Obama is the choice is that he beat my candidate Ms. Clinton (a faw superior candidate & definitely more qualified.

  1. It is very sad. Americans are being duped again by a liar...as they were with Bush-Cheney...who have destroyed this country. A McCain-Palin administration will spell certain disaster for this nation. When Americans ignore the truth and base their voting decisions on narcissism and projection (ie..."Oh I resonate with that guy, lady), Americans are no better than the Germans when they fell for Hitler's narcissistic lies and grandiosity. This indicates a deep soul sickness in this country. It was no coincidence that 911 happened. 911 means EMERGENCY. It was as if the Universe was telling us that this country is in an EMERGENCY situation. But who listened? After a month or two of the Unity that made this country great...America went back to its old narcissistic, Soul sick ways. Now with a failed war that has cost tens of thousands of lives and a trillion dollars, a 9 Trillion national debt (yes, America is broke), a 500 Billion deficit, a deep recession, an imploding Wall St, health care crises, all our work outsourced to China for a quick Republican buck,...Americans are once again demonstrating their stupidity, narcissism, and soul sickness by falling for the lies of McCain-Palin.

  1. Shane what stupid revisionist of history you repukes are!!
The Dems only contrlled congress for the last TWO years! We got in this mess WAY before that...but I would't expect the "POOR WORKING WHITE PEOPLE" to bother to investigate that. Vote McSame all you want and see what happens.
Question: if someone gave you $200K cash, what would you do with it? Sure as hell can't put it in a bank these days - you want more of that crap, rather than vote for a HALF-WHITE man as president?? Good luck with that.

  1. The degree of blatant intolerance for so many of our citizens as documented again and again in the comments of members of the party that purports to be "the party of the people" and supposedly embraces individual differences - is mind boggling... that is precisely WHY Obama is falling behind...Americans recognize the voices of the narrow minded, whether they echo from the right or the LEFT.

  1. Biscuitboy is absolutely correct. The culture wars continue. The narcissistic American culture is divided approximately 50/50. Those that vote Republican are the 100 or below IQ crowd. They are the red states with much lower per capita education levels, methamphetamine and other addictions, racism, and Christian fundamentalism. They are the guns, meth, and religion crowd. Those that vote Democrat are better educated, more intelligent, more compassionate, and more inclusive of minority groups. When after 8 years of Bush stupidity and disaster, the red half of America is ready to vote for a 72 yo cancer patient and his incompetent, lying narcissistic animal killing hockey mom, this country is surely going down. America is 50% deluded. Too much Meth, guns, and religion.

  1. I am prepared to Deceive, Distract and Distort. You can count on more Lies from the right wingnut ideologues that I take direction from. Yes, please vote for me if you want more dishonesty and disaster. Signed, John McCain.

  1. @Shane:

So that Democratically controlled Congress you speak of. Would that be the one where the Democrats controlled the House once since 1995 (Steny Hoyer 2007 - present) and the Senate that the Democrats controlled for 13 days in 2001 and 7 months in 2002 until taking control again in 2007?

Yeah... I guess you're right. The Congress has had more to do with the last 8 hellish years since it was mostly controlled by Republicans who agreed with whatever Bush said or did. And your candidate McBush voted with him 90% of the time, so I guess he's part of the problem as well...

  1. The democratically controlled congress of the past 20 or so months? Give me a break. The GOP has had a free ride for 6 and 1/2 years of Bush and we've gone to the gutter.

BB is correct: Americans don't know what or why they come to think what they believe. Obama is less likely to cut taxes? Yeah, maybe for those making more than 250 K...

As far as the golden boy crack earlier. Obama was never going to win. This country is far to racist and stupid to let that happen.

Posted by Mike September 15, 08 01:33 PM
  1. Shane...you fool. Democrats were shut out of ANY decision-making until 2006. And Bush has vetoed any reforms proposed since. The Republicans still own this mess.

  1. My candidate won the popular vote and lost due to her being beat up in the media; a male dominated media. Now I see that same media trouncing Governor Palin; this is another strong woman with more relevant qualifications than Mr. Obama. What an abomination! Who is this Obama? I never heard of him 2 years ago. Am I to trust the security of this great nation to an unknown? Has Mr. Obama ever run a business or anything? Does he have a campaign manager or is he running his campaign? Is this his one qualification? I am a Clinton suporter & I can not vote for this man with less qualifications than the GOP VP pick. Who are you people writing in this blog? Wake up & look at who you are supporting. Stop smoking pot (I gave this up over 20 years ago & I am a success because of it). I am an American before I am a Clinton supporter. Mr. Obama is NOT qualified!

  1. Ohio is turning very quickly in McCain/ Palin's direction. For example, a while back the McCain campaign had to turn down an invite by the Timken family for a fundraiser to be held tomorrow. The Timken company is a major employer in the Akron/ Canton area (steel products and power transmissions). McCain did promise them that his, as yet unannounced VP selection, would attend. Well, now that Gov Sarah Palin is attending that fundraiser event the Timkens are swamped with requests for their $25K per couple event fee. Yes, swamped. You can bet that would not have happened with a Romney or Hucklebee or Pawlenty VP pick. Palin alone will swing the election in this critical state.

  1. Biscuitboy, I second your opinion. This election should not be about "liberal" versus "conservative" tags. It should be about competence, vision, and moving forward on the real issues of jobs, healthcare, education, globalization, environment, and foreign policy. Obama is not perfect. In fact, he's far from it. But, he offers a blueprint to rebuild our crumbling infrastructure, make education more affordable, improve access to healthcare, deal head-on with the issue of protectionism in China, redeploy our forces and our resources to deal with terrorists rather than futile nation-building exercises.

If we Americans want more tax cuts for the wealthy, more money spent on military adventures, more drilling so that we cen further deplete our resources and spend less on alternative sources of energy at the same time, and increased influence from the evangelical right on issues ranging from abortion to education, then vote for McCain. He's a tough guy, no question about that. He's also impulsive, dangerously temperamental, ignorant on issues pertaining to what should matter most to US voters - the economy - and ill-equipped to face the challenges of a modern world. It's not 1973, Mr. McCain, or 1982, it's 2008 and our President better understand and be in touch with the modern IT world. Sarah Palin's your average hockey Mom with a far-right voting record. Great! That's exactly what we need for our VP.
