Viewership down for Republicans
The storm-tossed Republican National Convention is behind on the key measure of TV viewership.
Nielsen Co. estimated this afternoon that about 20.7 million people watched the convention on Tuesday -- its first full evening after a truncated program on Monday because of Hurricane Gustav -- on ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, FOX News Channel, and MSNBC.
That was 4.3 million viewers lower than the Democratic National Convention last Tuesday, largely because African-American viewership was cut in half from the Democrats (2.1 million for the St. Paul proceedings compared to 4.6 million for those in Denver).
More significantly, the GOP number was 600,000 lower than Day 2 of the 2004 convention, which lacked much drama since it was the renomination of President Bush.
