What to expect when Bristol Palin's expecting

Posted by Sasha Issenberg September 3, 2008 09:49 PM

ST. PAUL -- There's no question: Republicans will find a place for Bristol Palin's out-of-wedlock teenage pregnancy in a narrative of family values.

In introducing Palin, Hawaii Governor Linda Lingle earned robust applause when, in describing the Alaska governor's family, she mentioned that Palin has "a grandchild on the way." Earlier in the day, the boy’s father, Levi Johnston, was visibly inserted into the Palin family tableau to greet John McCain upon the candidate’s arrival in Minneapolis.

  1. What? She hasn't been introduced yet...it's 10:17 p.m. and Giuliana's still speaking...

How incredibly biased do you have to be to invent a headline - pathetic! You're still angry YOUR woman didn't win...

  1. it's so sad the Palin's are using someone else's child, and he is a child, to bolster her into the VP position. She obviously has lack of parenting skills, and cares less about her children than her position. Not once have you see her hold her 5 month old downs syndrome baby. Instead she sluffs that off on the other children who stand dutifully by.

To take someone else's child and make them the spotlight of national attention is reckless, selfish and self-centered. Poor Levi didn't want or ask for the spotlight, but now he's in lockstep to 'show' the world the Palins have 'values'. Nothing could be further from the truth.

  1. Shut up already! This has absolutely no place in a Presidential election. Bristol is not going to lead this country - her mother is. If the media would only get their heads out of the small places it is in...

  1. Everything becomes a spin, everything becomes twisted. A self-professed anti-birth control mother has a young daughter who gets knocked up by her "redneck" boyfriend is now interpreted as a nominee who is about to become a grandmother. That is the spin. Words get twisted. We return to the 1950s when the "right thing to do" when you get knocked up is to get married, unless you were rich, then the girl was sent to Europe for an abortion...oh my god the "A" word. Do you really think that boy that screwed Bristol is really truly interested in becoming a responsible father at the age of 17? But hey, when an Christian screws up or screws, then the line becomes, "Well, we're only human, we make mistakes." The only potential person I feel sorry for is the newborn baby...the father will probably do the Alaskan redneck stuff, hunting, drinking, hanging out with the guys, and the mom, she'll be the mom.

  1. A good mother would take a leave of absence to correct her family problems.

  1. I completely understand why foes of the GOP feel the need to criticize the supposed engagement of one pregnant teen to the teen father. However, I don't think I like the undertones in a lot of these criticisms. It seems to me, and perhaps only me, that the 'liberal' media is critiquing the very idea of family values, rather than just the apparent hypocrisy of the GOP in their mismatching poor family values with a platform that advocates good family values. ALL families have problems. I think it was not appropriate for the Palin family to throw their daughter to the dogs so quickly. If Gov. Palin thought there was any chance she'd be offered the VP spot (and that she'd accept), she should have released the truth about her daughter's pregnancy weeks before McCain planned to announce. Pretending that the teen father gives a rat's a$$ bothers me even more. I just wish the Dems would even pretend to have family values.

  1. It's no sin to be pregnant, although it does disgust many ZPGs on the left. You're implying hypocrisy. At least you could come out with it and be specific. Of course, that would first require that it be present.

You and your media ilk make this the most important story of the week, thinking that you understand the family values crowd. Keep comfy with your vague insinuations, but they'll blow up in your face.

  1. Did you investigate and report on Chelsea Clinton. You are hypocrites.

  1. It will be bad for the US but McCain is going to win this election. Obama would have won had he chosen Hillary as his VP. Bad decision. I prefer Joe Biden but I am not a typical "Bubba". In addition Obama apparently doesn't understand how important the issue of gun control is to many American voters. This is what cost Al Gore the election. If Gore had understood the power of the NRA lobby he would have won his own home state of Tennessee and kept the election away from the Republican controlled US Supreme Court. Obama should be talking about what happens after the US "wins" the war in Iraq. Iraq will become a close ally with Iran and will be an enemy of the US. Obama should be talking about his opposition to gun control and about how Alaska drives up the price of gasoline.

  1. P.S. Your forgot the "R" in her name. FYI. Feel free not to post this comment. Typos happen.

  1. How ridiculous!! To think that the Republicans are willing to have a VP that has been the mayor of a small town and has only 2 years experience as gov. of a small state is beyond belief is the important thing. We must keep in mind this person will be a heartbeat away from the most powrerful position in the world. We the people have a lot more to fear about Palin than her daughter being pregnant.

  1. Bristol Palin's pregnancy - a clear example of the worth of her mother's policy of abstinence and ignorance where it comes to school sex education.

  1. Raj, I have read hundreds and hundreds of reader comments, columns, and blogs, and I can't remember one comment against Bristol. I suppose there have been some, but it seems that universally, people have compassion for her, especially for her having been thrust into the world's attention by her mother's ambition.

  1. Fellow Democrats and Obama supporters, let us not get caught up in the heat of these stupid comments by people trying to create issues where there are none. The Republicans know they cannot win this election and will do anything to take us off our course and goal of assuring that Obama becomes the 44th President of the United States of America. So forget their smears and lies, forget what people are saying about Hillary which is not true. We need to go out there and campaign for our candidate. Convert those independents and undecided voters and get them on to Obama's tickets. We don't need to waste our time responding to this rubbish - our time should be spent on the campaign trail. A lot of bloggers and people making comments are just pretending to be Democrats or PUMA supporters or even Republicans who are just working to incite and create issues and friction. Obama has shown us how to handle these issues - with calm and dignity. Come On Dems, don't get caught up in this BS.
    YES WE CAN!
