Will Paul endorse Nader?

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor September 9, 2008 04:02 PM

There's now a hint that former Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul could endorse Ralph Nader on Wednesday.

Paul, the Texas congressman who amassed an Internet army and held a counter-rally at last week's GOP convention, had announced on Monday that he would hold a major press conference to "announce his intentions for the fall presidential election and will be accompanied by several special guests."

This afternoon, Nader's independent presidential campaign disclosed that one of those "special guests" will be Nader. Paul's supporters could provide a major boost for the longtime consumer advocate, who also ran in 2000 and 2004.

  1. Paul has hinted in an interview last week that he will be endorsing ALL 3rd party candidates. Chuck Baldwin and Bob Barr have also been confirmed to be a "special guest" at this press conference. McKinney and Keyes could also be invited. It wouldn't surprise me.

  1. Could you be more clueless?? There is zero chance Ron Paul would endorse Ralph Nader for president. Anyone who even knows the littlest about Ron Paul understands this. Bob Barr (The Libertarian candidate) and Chuck Baldwin (the Constitution Party candidate) will also be at this press conference which is merely to promote all three third party canddiates and tell the American public what they should look for in a Presidential candidate. There might be an announcement of a debate inviting ALL candidates. But Ron Paul endorsing Nader? Tee Hee. Good heavens no.

  1. Bob Barr, Cynthia McKinney, and Chuck Baldwin will also all be at the same press conference. You're an idiot if you think there's even the slightest chance that Ron Paul will endorse Nader.

  1. dummies.... Nader, McKinney, Barr, and Baldwin will all be there, this is not an endorsement for any one candidate, whatever it is.

  1. I believe the answer is no. I also read online, that most of the Third Party candidates are also invited: Bob Barr (Libertarian), Cynthia McKinney (Green), and Chuck Baldwin (Constitution). Probably more of a Third Party coalition to try and wedge into the duopoly that is forced upon us by the two major parties. My guess would be to try and open up the debates. I hope they succeed. I disagree with Nader and McKinney on many issue, but would love to see more than two sides of the same coin yabbering on about the hair's width of difference between them.

  1. This is an extreemely limited article, even for a blog.

Why would he endorse Nader over Barr?

Oh, and did they bother to look up the fact that McKinney, Baldwin, and Barr will also be there?

  1. no way....barr baldwin and mckinney will also be there....i don't think he will endorse just one. i'm thinking a party merge of some sort or a 3rd party debate.

  1. Does this mean it might be a Nader/Paul or a Paul/Nader ticket?

  1. If Ron Paul endorses Ralph Nader, it won't be Ron Paul. What most Ron Paul detractors, media, and apparently the entire Republican Party don't understand is that above all else, Ron Paul is an individualist. Ralph Nader has never been an individualist. This is an impossible compromise.

  1. Lets hope that Ron Paul will support Ralph Nader. That would be fabulous, and could really help move things forward. www.votenader.org

  1. Nader, Balwin, Barr, and McCinley? Can't endorse them all!

Posted by brent September 9, 08 04:41 PM
  1. No, Ron Paul will not endorse anybody on Wednesday, although you are correct, Ralph Nader will be in attendence. I believe he is one of a handful of 3rd party candidates who will be in attendence. What's the purpose you ask? To announce an open debate forum to include all candidates running for President who are on the ballot in enough states to win. All will be invited, although I imagine the two party juggarnauts will not attend. Their loss, because We the people will be watching!

End the duopoly, open the debates!

  1. pure speculation, rumor has it that Constitution and Libertarian party nominees Chuck Baldwin and Bob Barr will be in attendance as well... perhaps they're announcing a 3rd party unity ticket that will offer voters an alternative to the Republicrats? (two sides of the same corrupt coin, we'll get no significant change from either major party)...

  1. Most Major 3rd party candidates will be in attendance. We have confirmed that Chuck Baldwin for the Constitution Party will be there, Bob Barr of the Libertarian Party, Cynthia McKinny of the Greens, and of course Ralph Nader the independent.

It will indeed be interesting to see what occurs....

  1. Paul: We need the government out of the way if we ever hope to solve anything.

Nader: We need the government to get in the way if we ever hope to solve anything.

I doubt Foon Rhee knows enough about politics to be holding such a title (National Deputy Political Editor).

Is Sarah Palin going to Endorse Obama?!

  1. OMG are you serious?? Who the hell is this ignorant Foon Rhee person?

    Ron Paul is anti-government, anti-socialism.

    Ralph Nader is pro-government, pro-socialism.

RON PAUL WOULD NEVER ENDORSE NADER!!!

But if you are politically ignorant and think Ron Paul is a sandal-wearing, peacenik vegan (which he's not) then you might!

this is why the GLOBE is losing readers.

  1. Michele, NO, NO NO NO NO.

Ron Paul is not going to endorse NADER.

But newspapers who think they have 'political intelligence' are really just propaganda machines.

    You've been Foon Rhee'd... heheheh.

  1. Barr, Baldwin, Nader and McKinney will all be in attendance. They are uniting with the notion that if either of them are not the majority winner, they will ALL have their electors pledged to Ron Paul.

This is a stroke of political genius. Remember, when you make your vote next to a candidate's name, you are not actually voting for that candidate, you are in fact, voting for a slate of electors that candidate has designated in your state to vote for him in the Electoral College. Electors are not bound in any way to vote for that candidate.

With four independent parties combining to give their elector votes to Ron Paul would make this election VERY interesting indeed.

Ron Paul has always endorsed a popular vote for President and abolishing the Electoral College and this is also a way to show the absurdity of it by negotiating a loophole.

No doubt, Democrats and Republicans will files massive amounts of lawsuits to try and stop this, but it's a little too late now, and if they would have been able to have the clout to spur such a thing, they would have done it too in a heartbeat.

  1. How could you even suggest that Dr. Paul would endorse Mr. Nader. Obviously you haven't been paying attention to Dr. Pauls message.
And your a deputy national political editor?

  1. This article seems like a direct and obvious attempt to defuse both the Nader and Paul campaigns at this critical point when they are both about to get a good deal of exposure. By asking the question whether Paul will endorse Nader, they try to put the question in everybody's mind, "Is Ron Paul still in contention?"
Of course he is in contention. So is Nader.
That is why the main-stream media seek, now, to raise questions like this which are purposely designed to confuse and distort.
Instead of asking us loaded and rhetorical questions, why doesn't Foon Rhee and "Political Intelligence" do some reasearch and get back to us when they have something concrete to say instead of wasting our time?

  1. This is great. What are the similarities between ALL these candidates and their followers? Here are a few...

    the war
    the constitution and accountability
    spying
    torture
    individual rights
    NAFTA
    WTO
    imperialism
    clean food, toys, products
    the environment and alternative energy
    health care rights
    SPENDING and fiscal responsibility
    (I'm sure there are more...)

I could endorse a platform like this even if there were things I could not agree with. What about you? We need a third party alliance with the people, based on a contract, to accomplish anything. I could definitely support this...

  1. I suppose a "National Deputy Political Editor" only has to know about Republican and Democratic media strategies these days. Knowledge of political philosophies and thought processes is not required. Paul and Nader alone... HA!

  1. A national debate between the 3rd party candidates!! That would be genious! Now getting something like that telivised on main stream media would be the next challenge. I think it can be done and it would be a great tool in educating the country on the real issues that everyone should be talking about, instead of complaining about who said what and the color of obama shirt.

  1. Attn: Ron Paul supporters,
If you're not going to vote for Nader, please spend some time listening to him and learning about what he's really talking about. He is not, as has been suggested, Paul's polar opposite. "Socialism" is not "Statism" or "Corporatism", and Nader is every bit as committed to the Constitution as Ron Paul.
Furthermore, if you're intellectually honest about your commitment to free markets, please read Naomi Klein's "The Shock Doctrine" to see how we got here in the first place. Paul's prescriptions are not silver bullets. There is a huge mess to clean up, and some form of self-government will need to be part of the solution. Tone down the dogma and let's figure out how to work together…

  1. Amen to K

Independents of every stripe need to work together now and AFTER the coronation. We have much in common, which will be Paul's theme today. These brickbats from Paulists are destructive. Let's be respectful of each other and the Constitution. Naderites are very sympathetic to many of Paul's statements. Let's hear more from Paulists on their knowledge and opinion of Nader, OK?

  1. Correct, Paul and Nader are not polar opposites, and they have much in common. As an ardent Paul supporter knows, but would never dare mention, Paul has sometimes even spoken favorably of Dennis Kucinich.
To try and simplify things as "Paul is anti-government, Nader is pro-government", is pretty useless. Nader is not in favor of the kind of government that we now have, but is in favor of a government of, by, and for the people, which we do not have, and which will take much work to create. Work that will have to be done by organizing and working with other people, as opposed to the lazy "individualist" route, which accomplishes nothing.
