A campaign finance watchdog group predicted this afternoon that this year's election will be the most expensive by far, with $5.3 billion spent on the presidential race and races for Congress.

Just for the presidential race, nearly $1.6 billion has been raised and more than $1.3 billion spent, the Center for Responsive Politics said.

Democrat Barack Obama, harnessing the power of online fund-raising, has shattered every record.
