More polls show Obama building lead

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor October 14, 2008 06:37 PM

Thanks to a huge swing among independent voters, Democrat Barack Obama has built a double-digit lead over Republican John McCain just in the past week, according to a new poll out this evening.

The New York Times/CBS News poll gives Obama a 53 percent to 39 percent lead, compared to a much narrower 48 percent to 45 percent edge in the same poll released on Oct. 6.

Among independent voters, the change is even larger. Obama now leads 51 percent to 33 percent, when McCain had led 49 percent to 39 percent a week ago.

The thirst for change is also the largest ever in this particular poll -- 89 percent said the country is headed in the wrong direction.

A Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg national poll, also released this evening, gives Obama a 50 percent to 41 percent lead among likely voters. He led 49 percent to 45 percent in the same poll last month.

They are the latest surveys -- both done nationally and in key battleground states -- to show Obama surging, leading some Democrats to talk about an electoral landslide on Nov. 4.

He alone knows the American people and what they want. He is the more intelligent candidate. He exudes inspiration and confidence. He has better judgment. These qualities better describe OB than McC

With the election of Obama, and the sweep of congress by the other Democrats, we can now expect to all follow the same liberal trail blazed by Massachusetts, with its resulting financial burden.
Oh well, with the tax cuts promised to me, and the lowered medical costs promised to me by Obama, somebody else will be paying the pricetag, not me.

The Independent vote is bouncing around like a ping pong ball...CHECK THE SAMPLE: only 28% Republican respondents..If the pollster identifies him/herself as CBS/NY Times, most Republicans will hang up the phone..don't cash in your chips kids..or better yet..get complacent, stay home, its a wrap..Obama wins in a landslide..like Carter, Duke, Kerry..Did the sample include Mary Poppins, Dick Tracy, Mickey Mouse and the infamous upstanding citizen Jive Turkey? What's the Acorn sample?

Donna Gru: These "idiots" are polling in America. You conservatives make a big point of making fun of "liberal elitists" when it serves your purposes: painting your opponents as out of touch with everyday Americans. We the people voted in a new Congress - how is that working for us? Obama will get very little done and what he gets done may really hurt us. One never really knows until years later how the president performed. If he wins (I am not voting for him) I will support him. Unlike many Bush haters!

Not even Obama will be able to quickly fix all the problems that Bush & co. have created for us in foreign relations, the economy, and health care (to name a few areas). We can only hope that the next president will help to keep us from falling and inspire Congress to pass legislation promoting a focus on new technology and better education, as a long-term solution to our troubled state.

With each hate-drenched pundit, with each gross prevarication, and, each time the stench of seared consciences taints the air I breath, my trust, in what I perceive to be truth, is validated.
And yet, with each pronouncement of coming change, there is flash of a visceral fear.
Moving real fast into being sixty, I'm learning that, "FEAR", is a renegade, and it's trying to steal my passionate joy at living in this beautiful country.

The same questions and doubts presented during this Presidential Election are 8 years too late. You had 2000 and 2004 to ask the same questions you're incorrectly presenting to Senator Obama. Associations to terrorists? Ask Bush about his associations with the dad of the assasin called Bin Laden. More associations? That's how S-L-O-W your brains work.

Remember, Bush won by a record number of votes (most in history) at the 2nd election. Where are those people now? Oh, they may not admit they voted for him but they did.

Finally on Nov 4th we will see the end of another chapter in the segregation and racism in America. The election of Obama is a watershed moment in the history of the world...because every man of color , every immigrant will be able to dream and aspire for the highest position in this supposedly land of the free.

Martin Luther King had a dream and it took forty years for that dream to turn into reality. Hope this guy will steer the country in a new direction. It is ridiculous to say that Obama is close to terrorists. He is respected by millions of people.

Yeah. Obama is going to destroy the US. George Soros and Warren Buffet really want to tank and socialize the markets and economy. Psst! Berkshire Hathaway holders are secretly militant muslim socialists. You people are insane.
Bushie was put in power to open the coffers and he did (with Cheney making sure of it) and these myopic republican boneheads are still running around with their seats on fire saying Obama is going to give away all the money. WHAT MONEY? Bush lost it all and the deficit clock has run out of numbers. Go fly an angry kite for the next four years folks, we're here to clean up the mess and dead bodies of the past 8 years. Donna, that would be called the "reverse Bradley" effect. If you don't know what that means, its about people saying they are voting for McCain, when in fact, they are voting Obama. McCain and Obama are both decent candiates for the job but the nod goes to Obama. He selected someone for a running mate that addressed concerns of the voter on foreign policy and defense. With Palin McCain opened them and raised concerns over his own judgment which simply undermined his own campaign. It was a fatal mistake.

"More intelligent"; vs top-rated Harvard alum who most certainly knows that Iraq and Pakistan do not share a border: "Exudes inspiration and and confidence" - sure, when he blows his stack in meetings, and rushes about crazily in the bailout process, and.. but the list is too long - "Has better judgment" - hmm, voted for Bush's Iraq war when BO opposed it., how does that look in 2008?

Your comparisons are a precise description of Obama as the better choice.

Larry M: Excuse me Larry, I'm a Republican (since 1971), and I've just lived through the biggest financial bloodbath in my lifetime, courtesy of the Bush administration. We just made a $700-Billion down payment on Republican sponsored legislation which repealed the regulatory restraints that would have prevented the current financial disaster. The national debt has more than doubled since George Bush took office 8 years ago. Our military has been decimated, so much so that they have recruited over 125,000 people with serious criminal records to fill in the gaps in our force levels. Do you feel safer now? Who was in power when we started running the sub-prime mortgage ponzi scheme?

Hopefullly Obama will prevail. The flimsiness of the Republican platform is evident by McCain's endless attacks, followed by selling his biography. His latest economic policy (cobbled by his aids) is silly, and it is obvious that he doesn't understand the policy himself. Like Palin, he clings to sticking it out in Iraq, all the while claiming that the Democrats are the ones spending money foolishly. You can't have it both ways... neither Obama nor McCain has all the answers. But at least Obama has the intelligence and intellectual honesty to address the questions.

The political dam is about to break. There will be a flood of voters to the Democratic Party and its presumptive President Barrack Obama! Immediately after tonites debate the undecided will leave that status as their minds snap shut in support of Obama. Tonites contrast will be all that is wrong with Washington contrasted with all that is right with America. McCain vs Obama. The Republican big moneyed or evangelical homesteads will flood with no bail out in sight, no October surprise, no Palinific retort can save McCain or his base. McCain is now the man and republicans the political party that .....nobody can trust. ..... Trust!..... Heck gosh darn we here on the mainland just do not understand these complicated issues, bail out, 2 wars, job loss, gas more precious than Jim Beam. What we do know is how to look another human being in the eye listen to what they say and make an instinctive decision on whether we can trust the speaker. Trust. We do not trust John McCain with our future. Barrack Obama we trust. So fellow democrats and our new friends the no longer undecided, sit back and watch the debate tonite, That noise you will hear and feel is the rumble of deciding voters and the collapse of a once major political party. It will be the greatest show on Earth. I’ll bring the popcorn.
