Apology over 'holocaust' email

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor October 27, 2008 05:50 PM

A former Pennsylvania Supreme Court justice apologized today for signing an e-mail to Jewish voters that likened a vote for Barack Obama to ignoring warning signals that led to the Holocaust, the Associated Press reports.

Sandra Schultz Newman said she regrets that she did not review the final draft more carefully before it was released. "Some of the language was inappropriate and intemperate," Newman wrote in an e-mail statement. "I apologize to anyone who was offended by this misguided e-mail."

The e-mail was sent Thursday to 75,000 Jewish voters in Pennsylvania warning of the danger of a second Holocaust due to the threats to Israel from its neighbors and praises Republican John McCain's qualifications over those of Obama.

Republicans and a spokesman for McCain repudiated the e-mail and fired the campaign consultant who helped draft it.

But the National Jewish Democratic Council said today that a further investigation is needed to make sure all those responsible are held to account.

"In a year of dirty Republican tactics used in the Jewish community, this email is particularly loathsome. These attacks must stop, and the people responsible should be exposed," Ira N. Forman, the council's executive director, said in a statement.

The information that is missing here but I have read elsewhere is that Neuman refused to retract the e-mail on Friday. It took the uproar to get her to retract. In other words she was not sorry about the contents of the e-mail but the effect that the contents had on the electorate.

This is an example of a dysfunctional campaign. Review of the e-mail by several non partisan persons would have shown that it would be ineffective. This is an example of an ethical blindness and political ineptitude.

“Al Qaeda will have to support McCain in the coming election,” read a commentary on a password-protected Islamist Web site that is closely linked to Al Qaeda and often disseminates the group’s propaganda.

An American president who keeps troops in Iraq indefinitely, fulminates about Islamic terrorism, inclines toward military solutions and antagonizes other nations is an excellent recruiting tool. In contrast, an African-American president with a Muslim grandfather and a penchant for building bridges rather than blowing them up would give Al Qaeda recruiters fits.

penchant for what? forcing banks to give bad loans? hanging with terrorist organizations? black supremacy churches, voter fraud,,, yep,,, gotta build those bridges

The Republican campaign has truly scraped the bottom of the barrel on this one. I am first generation American. My late father was a Holocaust survivor. I am incensed at the depravity of this email aimed at Jewish voters. I do not accept this apology. "If anyone was offended" - everyone should be offended by such disgraceful attempts to terrorize voters and influence the election.

This ignorant Jewish judge Sandra Schultz Newman should be disbarred. What a stupid, ignorant remark. She should be forced to watch the German films from Auschwitz depicting the murder of thousands of innocent Jews! This particularly offensive since Sarah Palin endorses the views of "Jews for Jesus" whose Executive Director, David Brickner also described terrorist attacks on Israelis as God's "judgment of unbelief" of Jews who haven't embraced Christianity.
The GOP will do anything to win this election including this disgusting tactic!

Actually, I agree with the underlying point of the e-mail (and, yes, I am Jewish). Obama is bad for Jews, bad for Americans, and bad in just every respect. The warning signs are there and we will all regret electing him.

yep talking to Al Qaeda is great, and how many more Americans will they have to kill in order for Obama to realize they do not want talk they want us gone or converted...neither choice is good but an all Democrat one is definitely a basis for fear - spend their way out of a recession, talk to our enemies (didn't we do this is WWII and got bombed)...the Democrats will just weaken us further financially and through its trust everyone diplomacy....

She should be removed as a supreme court justice immediately. No apology can take the hateful words in the email back. I am a white christian female, who is an ashamed registered republican. The McCain camp and republican party has run one of the most despicable campaigns I have ever seen. I cannot vote for McCain or Palin and in fact I will refuse to vote for any republican this year and maybe for years to come.

To each his own danger signs. Here's mine. More than one Holocaust survivor has pointed out that the Nazis got their start by demonizing certain Germans as not "real" and blaming the nation's problems on them. Sure enough, one of the American campaigns in 2008 does sound like that, and it isn't Obama's.

# 2 lifted his text straight from Sunday's NY Times op-ed piece "Endorsement From Hell". Well at least he has good taste in editorials.

I, myself, being a non-jew AND being a republican women, never understood why Jewish people are so committed to the Democratic party. My god, the democrats do not even like Israel! It makes no sense to me. Jewish people to me are the brightest, most self-made, smartest with their money, and this just seems to match better with the Republican party not to mention the Israel factor that Republicans are SO strong on. ..Ill never understand. ..just crazy.

I am both outraged and embarrass that John McCain and his followers would stoop to such levels to win an election. If John McCain was meant to be President, nothing would stop him, least of all an African American candidate.
Senator McCain, the public is getting ready to speak on November 4th and that small fraction of the country that you and the republican base speaks to will not be enough to elect you President. Thank God!

Since when does a lawyer not check the details? Unbelievable lame excuse!
Resign or be fired! And where is McCain to make sure this happens?

Is someone counting all these last minute Republican dirty tricks? Orlando newscaster, campaign ATM nut case, Rush Limbaugh, Riverside County, CA foodstamps dollar bill, McCain's brother 911 call . . . the list goes on. With a week to go, who will be the next jerk to come forward?

Anybody remember Acorn, Ayers, socialist furor, Joe, the plumber? Amazing how McCain keeps trying these goofy angles. Credit goes to Cindy McCain, Steve Schmidt, and Rick Davis. Keep it up, guys . . . Obama's margin just keeps increasing!

"yep talking to Al Qaeda is great"

We are talking to the Taliban RIGHT NOW. Obama didn't make anyone do it either. Our top generals are for it. Divide and conquer.

John McCain's supporters will say ANYTHING, no matter how slanderous, to get their way. They remind me of Joseph Goebbels, as do the comments of the Pennsylvania Judge.
No apologies here for that one....

The GOP courtship of the Jewish vote is shameless religious opportunism. The neocons promote a hawkish defense of Israel (when in fact no one on either side of the aisle is "soft" on Israeli support), while Evangelicals secretly delight (and sometimes, in the case of Rev Hagee et al., not so secretly) in the fact that, in their warped worldview, US support of Isael is necessary to precipitate their End Times prophecy-one in which the GOP is ascended directly into heaven while the rest of us (Jews included) suffer eternal hellfire. In my mind, that not too far off from the Jihadist's version of spending eternity with virgins, while the infidels roast.
The truly scary part is that the neocons and the Evangelicals have the firepower to make it happen.
Want to know Sarah Palin's views on foreign policy? Read the Book of Daniel. Then you'll also understand why she doesn't have much of a long term plan for anyone here on this Earth....

#10 is exactly right. It you want to talk about the potential Holocaust scenario, then look at the rhetoric that has been spewed from the republican party through out this campaign. When you make one group out to be not 'real' citizens, un-American, or when you blame, or imply, that this group ruined the nation, it promotes Nazi-ism. The Nazis, who came to power in Germany in January 1933, believed that Germans were "racially superior" and that the Jews, deemed "inferior," were an alien threat to the so-called German racial community (ushmm.org). The republicans have taken this same stance consistently the past 4 months. If you are not a republican WASP, you are a threat to the community. Either you're a republican or you're not a 'real' American. Sounds alot like Bush's 'Either you're with us or you're against us' declaration. Remember that? To the O'Reilly's and the Hannity's, that translated to, either you fully believe in what we're doing in this war or you are now our enemy. We Americans used that philosophy to demonize and boycott France and Germany a few years ago. It was stupid then and it's stupid now. Promote Holocaust-type reactions in this country, then accuse the opposing party of promoting a Holocaust scenario in Israel. Simply despicable. the But I guess at this time, the 'kitchen sink strategy' is worth trying.

What's funny here, in a despicable way of course, is that black and Jews have always been seen as less than human. Growing up in Louisville, KY, these were the two groups that were not allowed to be members the country clubs, golf clubs, swimming clubs, etc. And I'm talking the 80's here not the 40's, 50's, and 60's. It was the same thing as I attended the University of KY. Black and Jews were the two groups that were denied access to many of the things around town. My girlfriend is Jewish but people never realize it, and the filthy things she hears about Jews from the republican crowd is astonishing. Alot of them speak of Jews in the most derogatory terms, but always seem to be in defense of Jewish people when speaking in public. The most racist, and anti-semitic people always tend to project onto others, what they are themselves. Once again, its funny...... in a despicable way
