Best friends forever?

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor October 28, 2008 09:43 AM

A prominent supporter of Hillary Clinton is in New Hampshire today to rally the troops for Republican John McCain, as Clinton herself is in the Granite State to support Democrat Barack Obama.

Lynn Forester de Rothschild -- a personal friend of Clinton, a major fundraiser, and a member of the Democratic National Convention's platform committee -- plans press conferences in Dover and Manchester, the McCain campaign announced.

The events are counterprogramming against Clinton, who is now enthusiastically backing Obama and who also plans events in Dover and Manchester. New Hampshire is among the most competitive states on Nov. 4.

De Rothschild, who was born in New Jersey, married into a British banking family, and became a baroness, was one of the highest-profile backers of Clinton to declare they could not support Obama when he defeated Clinton for the Democratic nomination and throw their support to McCain instead.

"We have got to make the right choice about who goes to the White House,” she said at a September press conference announcing her backing of McCain. “So this decision to vote Republican for the first time in my life has been after a lot of thought. I have looked at all four candidates very carefully and I have no question about what I am doing today.”

"De Rothschild, who was born in New Jersey, married into a British banking family, and became a baroness..."

She's not exactly "Joe the Plumber," is she? I wonder if McSame's hypocrite supporters will have any problem with the endorsement of an elitist banker?

Guess who benefits most under the McSame economic plan (read here continuation of Curious George's tax cuts)? "The baroness" definitely knows which side of the bread her butter's on. Too bad all the lying republical parrots that make less than $250K don't have that same knowledge.

I smell BS, it's more the adage "an enemy of my enemy is my friend". the policies of Obama are far closer to that of McCain so she was just voting for Hillary because it's Hillary

I really can't see how an incredibly rich - Cindy clone - will help McCain rally support. Does anyone on his staff really think that she will appeal to other than the polo set?
I would have said no thanks even if she was once a Hillary supporter.

Lynn Forester de Rothschild should really appeal to Joe the Six Pack Drinking Plumber, or whoever the Republicans think they can fool into voting for them.

Speaking of fools, I like how this spoiled, petty socialite couldn't have what she wanted -- for once -- so she threw a tantrum and now supports someone she disagrees with on virtually every issue. You stay classy, Lynn.

Maybe Baroness Forester de Rothschild's endorsement of Senator McCain will cancel out Colin Powell, Warrren Buffet & Paul Volker supporting Senator Obama, but somehow I doubt it.

Because, after all, a wealthy person who married into a title and a family that has controlled European banking for over 200 years represents the views of Middle-class Americans facing a shrinking economy.

Shame on you Lynn Forester de Rothschild! To abandon your core democratic principles and everything that your "friend" Hillary stands for, just because she didn't become the party nominee. One point everyone is missing: Obama has made it known that he will not give Israel the level of support that Bush or even the Clintons gave it. Rothschild comes from the family that helped develop the very idea of Israel. Makes sense that she would not support him from that perspective.

Rothschild has lost her way. How could she be in support of a bright, strong Woman like Hillary and lend support to a Paulin-McCain ticket. Our Country is in need of true leadership to bring us back to the once respected nation that we should be. Rothschild just does not understand the difference between supporting a true leader like Obama and playing her own sad game of politics. If done to "make a statement" the American people will be the only victims. Poor Rothschild hpe she finds her way back to reality.

I find it ironic that when individuals cross from Republican to Democrat they are lauded for their character and willingness to forego party politics for the "greater good". Now, when one chooses the other direction the vitriol comes out of your pores. I was born and raised in Massachusetts and as a child I idolized the Kennedys without question. Now, as a mature adult I can only echo the Old Testament writer when he said "When I was a child I thought as a child, spoke as a child, acted as a child. But when I became a man I put away childish things. " Having lots of money is not a phenomenon unique to members of the GOP.

Why does everyone assume the rich support Republicans. There are just as many top 5% earners who are Democrats as Republicans. Take a look at George Soros and Warren Buffet. Democrats aren't exactly taking any vows of poverty.
Also, look in the US Senate at Kerry (the richest) and Kennedy.

Remember, the top 1% pay 40% of income taxes, the bottom 50% pay 2.99% in income taxes (IRS 2006).

Congrats to Lynn for standing on principle and not supporting the Chi-town crack smoking racist thug. Unlike Hillary she has a pair on her and is not afraid to buck her party of lemmings. HRC should have done the same since she absolutely despises the man that accused her of being a racist. As far as whether the Powell endorsement is more important then her, well lets see Powell likes Obama because as he articulated (?) he likes him more (read:Black) and Lynn represents a lifelong Dem who realizes that the lefty looney will transform the country into some European socialist society. I 'll take Lynn's endorsement!

Yes, why does everything think that Republicans are rich? I'm not rich at all but I believe in working hard for what I have and taking responsibilty for everything I do. I was a single parent and never asked for child support, welfare or any kind of help from anyone. I worked hard and had to do without for a while but I made sure I took responsibiliy for my life and got through it. Sharing the wealth to those who aren't going to be responsible for their own actions is not something I beleive in. There are way too many freeloaders looking for a ride in this country. Democrats want to take the little money I work so hard for and give it to the freeloaders. So its McCain/Palin for me all the way!

He's not a crazy, whack-o, fire-breathing revolutionary (that would be Sarah Palin) ... he's a thoroughly mainstream guy who watches SportsCenter and gets bossed around by his daughters. The ignorance revealed in most of the comments above is staggering in scope. Lady Lynn deRothschild is no goldigger! She is a self-made woman of enormous accomplishment. From a very modest background, she worked her way to the top, earning a law degree, starting her own company, and ultimately selling it for a large fortune (100 million if memory serves). She still works on Wall Street even though she has no need to do so. I am a Republican, but admire her greatly for her intelligence, hard work, grace, and sincerity. The lack of respect shown for her here is appalling.

to number 28, just make sure you realize the logical inverse of that quite common republican talking point - if the bottom 50%were to pay enough taxes to make up 50% of the governments tax revenue, they would probably have to be paying their entire incomes and more in taxes....so obviously the top few percentiles pay the most.

Posted by nicholas in cambridge October 28, 08 01:52 PM

taxes under obama will be no higher than they were under reagan. small business will no longer have to pay capital gains. taxes on the middle class will be lower than ever. if you actually believe this is bad for the economy then you are buying the GOP talking points hook line and sinker and clearly have no idea what you are talking about. if the middle class can keep more of its wealth that they produce they will get rich quicker, and thus incomes in america will go up overall. the only way to maintain gov revenue at the same rate it is now while cutting taxes on 95% is to raise them on the top 5%, whose wealth has increased 20 times over in the past 8 years anyways. if the wealth of the middle had increased, then there would not have been a need to tax the rich more, but the middle can barely afford to pay the bush taxes right now so obama will lower them. thus more savings, more investment, more spending, better economy, duh. the rich will get richer even though they will be paying a few percent more, because 95% of americans will have far more money to spend on the business that the rich own. ask any rich business owner right now, would you rather continue in today's economy or have a change back to clinton era tax code - they will easily choose the clinton era code because consumers had far more money to spend and invest then.

Ignatz...People have to understand these truths you state about Obama and end the "left wing nutjob" smear campaign. I have met Obama. He is for real. If anything he may be too establishment to walk us away from the middleeast as we should. (Before the right wing coolaid drinkers get mad at least read "The Limits of Power" by Andrew Bacivich)
I am a business owner and understand that anyone that makes over $250K year has a support crew of people making much less underneath them. That person should want what is best for those beneath them and not be selfish. There will still be plenty of money left over if you are lucky enough to realize the American Dream and reach $500K.....$1M...$2M...and so on. Just like the rich mislead the public on the Inheritance Tax, hopefully enough people listen to the Warren Buffets of the world and not the greedy want-to-be's like Mackenzie who needs to get out in the real world.

Baroness Forester de Rothschild is just like Joe The Plumber . Both support McCain, and neither one has a Plumbers license, or a clue as to how McCain would do anything differently than Bush. More tax cuts for millionaires.

So after 8 years of Bush tax cuts for the Rothschilds and deregulation for Wall St., the investment banks get a $750 Billion dollar taxpayer bailout. But Obama wants to help middle class people, so he's the 'Socialist'. Sure thing.

Okay, just so I have it straight: Obama is a leftist/socialist/Marxist elitist who wants to take all our money/redistribute the wealth. He cheated Hillary out of her rightful place atop the Democratic ticket. He lies about who is he is and is probably some kind of an Islamic terrorist Manchurian Candidate. He's a radical and a product of the Chicago machine. He has no experience and will dim-wittedly lead us into war with Russia and China, after he sits down and talks to any terrorist who will talk to him. If you happen to be a supporter of Obama you: are a delusional/naive/stupid lemming who either willfully ignores the facts of Obama (see above) or hates Americaas much as he does. Ms. de Rothschild has every right to support the McCain/Palin ticket because this is one of the constitutional freedoms that is afforded every US citizen. It is just horrible how Obama supporters choose to villify this lady for her rightful decision. President and Mrs. Clinton have chosen to get in line and support Obama because if they don't their legacy would be in trouble. Obviously Ms. de Rothschild believes McCain is ready for the Presidency and Obama is not. This is a free country and its citizens can support whomever they choose.
