Debate viewership tied for second highest ever

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor October 3, 2008 08:37 PM

Thursday night's vice presidential debate tied for the second largest audience for any debate in history, Nielsen Media Research reported today.

It said 69.9 million saw the face-off between Sarah Palin and Joe Biden, equal to the second George H.W. Bush/Bill Clinton/Ross Perot debate in 1992 and was only exceeded by the Jimmy Carter/Ronald Reagan debate of 1980 that drew 80.6 million viewers.)

"Although scheduling the debate on a Thursday was obviously a factor in attracting more viewers than the presidential debate last Friday, public curiosity about Sarah Palin clearly drove these higher ratings," Nielsen said.

The viewership is 17.5 million higher than the audience for the Barack Obama-John McCain debate last Friday night.

The audience smashed the prior record for most-watched veep face-off: George H.W. Bush vs. Geraldine Ferraro in 1984 with 56.7 million viewers. The 2004 version between Dick Cheney and John Edwards drew an audience of 43.6 million.

PBS, which does its ratings separately, said an estimated 3.5 million viewers watched its veep debate coverage, compared to 2.6 million last week.

The three broadcast networks' post-debate analysis programs all ranked in the top five prime-time programs, and ABC's was only behind the latest installment of "Survivor."

Fox News Channel said tonight that its audience for debate coverage, averaging 11.1 million viewers during the 90 minutes, was the highest among the cable channels -- and its highest-rated telecast ever in its 12-year existence.

The debate smashed Fox's previous record, 9.7 million, during President Bush's address in March 2003 announcing the war in Iraq.

I hope that the Democratic Party starts running a commercial in the battleground states called ABANDONED showing all the factories in Michigan which have closed and all of the people losing their jobs with the caption " When John McCain realized that he could not get your vote, he abandoned you..... which state will be next ?

The line is allways longest at the freak show, that's all Palin represents. To offer her up as a serious candidate is a insult to thinking Americans.

I tuned in just to hear Palin say "nucular." Not only did she say it, she repeated it 11 times. I almost got radiation sickness.

I fully agree with the comment from #2. Consider this problem for McCain: he calls himself a maverick as if its a great thing to be. He's not really a real Republican, for sure. He doesn't associate himself with the Republicans in Congress. AND WHO IS HIS BEST BUDDY? LIBERMAN. THEY SHOULD BE RUNNING AS INDEPENDENTS!!!

Palin has had too many gaffes to make a difference in her performance last night. She studied notes and read notes that got her through last night when not able to think of the answer to the question she went back to energy avoiding the question.Palin is not ready to be VP,or god forbid President!!! Maybe President of the PTA,Oh yeh home schooling doesn't have PTA!!!!

Ron, I'm confused as to how abandoned factories in Michigan has anything to do with McCain? It's his fault that people of this country choose to purchase cars from other countries? It's his fault that car corporations ignored basic economics and increased production? Ten of the mans thirteen cars are American made cars....if that's not support then I don't know what is. I assume that's more than you've ever done to help support your country and it's far more than Obama has ever done.

wool,
The Republican party thinks slapping an American flag sticker on their American-made cars is all they have to do to support this country...how about upholding the Constitution? Or do they, like Palin, think that the VP is part of the legislative branch?

It’s a sad, sad day in journalism when journalist use their networks for platforms to advance what would seem like their indorsement of a particular party’s campaign. Fox News Network has continually and consistantly supported Senator McCain’s campaign through unbalanced interviews. Guest on the network (more particularly Hannity and Colmes) that are pro McCain are interviewed in abundance not the case with Obama supporters, if you are going to report on a political subject as important as this there needs to be balance. Also the many, many crafty comments that try to employ negativity aimed at the Obama campaign border on the line of being crasp and unsavory. I have yet to observe fairness in journalism by the Fox News Network and at this stage of the game don’t anticipate any. Therefore, I am asking viewers of a continued boycott of this network’s inability to provide viewers with fair and unbiased reporting and if you tire of this type of journalism I ask that you join and get on board also, that we may end this type of reporting by Fox News. PLEASE PASS ALONG.

I'm one of the 69.9 million viewers and gosh darn it was hard to sit through 90 minutes of Palin's canned and mostly vacuous responses. Her folksiness was nauseated. I hope I've seen the last of her in the national spotlight.

I am amazed that more pundits and journalists do not take issue with Palin’s use and abuse of the English language. Since when do fractured syntax and rambling sentences filled with folksy idioms and unnecessary repetitions constitute plain speaking? If Palin’s verbal style is an example of America’s education system, then clearly more than one child has been left behind. More comments on Palin-ese at: www.kulturerant.blogspot.com

We were all relieved. Palin didn't make a complete fool of herself again - that performance standard alone tells it all. She repeated the text they prepped her with, not being capable of adding anything more to the debate but the usual clichés about being Joe Six Pack, a Maverick, and a hockey mom. People that support her because she is similarly uninformed must ask themselves if they are ready for the White House too. What an absurd measure of leadership. She never once offered any policy differences between McCain Palin and Bush. Biden , on the other hand, pressed the attack with clear policy statements, and facts - mostly correct.. The differences between candidates were stark, one seasoned and knowledgeable, the other a wind-up Pit Bull with Lipstick who hasn't a clue about how poorly prepared she really is. In this regard, more than 2700 concerned medical doctors placed a full page add in the New York Times today asking for McCain's full medical report in light of his bout with highly lethal invasive melanoma. The unobstructed release of this report for expert review is more critical than ever.

Newsworthy: Sarah Palin's record on her rejection of endangered species act, and environment issues: (offshore drilling is safe? Ok, Sarah) is dreadful. She is suing to take Polar bears off of their rightfull spot on the endangered list, is an avid hunter, and lifelong member of the NRA (who allowed assault weapons on American streets). Her favorite kill is the Moose. She had supported the aerial sharpshooting of wolf packs living near WILDLIFE PRESERVE land in Ak., including the massacre of several 14 mo. old wolf pups. She offers hunters a $150 bounty if they present a fresh killed wolf leg! McCain voted for a 3 Million dollar Grizzly bear research project in MT. Then, switching in the pres. debate he said: "they actually wanted 3 mill. for bear DNA research? what a joke, that's wasteful porkbarrel spending". No, John it's not, Grizzlies ARE endangered. Our kids may never get to see one-they'll be extinct. Thanks, Jayne Segman, No-kill Animal Shelter of MA.

Ron -

Woolie -

As a McCain supporter you are by definition confused, unless you are a millionaire - then you are a part of his true constituency. How many cars do YOU own? And do you have a beer empire heiress for a wife who can help you pay the bill for your American autos that still guzzle gas at a shameful rate because "free marketeers" like McCain wouldn't hold Detroit to higher CAFE standards? And do you know that every one of the American cars you own cost about $2,000 more than their counterparts offered by overseas manufacturers because their governments subsidize health care that Detroit has to pay for on its own? Do you care whether 45 million Americans have no health care at all, or doesn't that fall into your definition of "supporting your country?"

Dick #14,
If we were to boycott all biased news networks, then we would not have a network to watch. Except the vast majority swing to the liberal side, which apparently you choose to overlook, perhaps because it aligns with your own personal views?

Sad, sad day, indeed. The media is planting all these images and ideas into the public's minds with their blatantly liberal agendas, and many are too naive to even notice...

Do you think the normal citizen cares who they say on TV about the candidates? We have minds of our own and make our own decisions. I would not vote for McCain even if I did, which I don't, watch Sean Hannity.

You and McCain talk to us as if we are all stupid.
