Labor warns McCain about crowds

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor October 10, 2008 04:43 PM

The head of the nation's biggest labor federation is joining the chorus of voices warning about the increasingly angry crowds coming to John McCain's campaign events.
At rallies this week, McCain's criticisms of Democrat Barack Obama have been met with shouts of "terrorist," "liar," and other harsh words.

"Sen. John McCain, Gov. Sarah Palin and the leadership of the Republican party have a fundamental moral responsibility to denounce the violent rhetoric that has pervaded recent McCain and Palin political rallies," said John Sweeney, president of the AFL-CIO, which has endorsed Obama. "When rally attendees shout out such attacks as 'terrorist' or 'kill him' about Sen. Barack Obama, when they are cheered on by crowds incited by McCain-Palin rhetoric -- it is chilling that McCain and Palin do nothing to object.

"In a world where unspeakable violence is too often promulgated by extremists, it is no small or trivial matter to call someone a terrorist -- or to incite potentially dangerous individuals toward violence," Sweeney said in a statement. "John McCain, Sarah Palin and Republican leaders are walking a very thin line in pretending not to hear the hateful invectives spewed at their rallies. McCain should end this line of attack in the strongest possible terms. Anything less puts McCain in the same camp as the racists and extremists who are bringing their angry rhetoric to his campaign events."

do you really think someone spends a lifetime - a career - of civic responsibility - just to rip off his united states senator mask and reveal that he is a "terrorist"? is this a scooby doo episode - or is this the future of a nation. are you people so stupid as to show no understanding or respect for the work that all senators do for the government, the law and the general population? do you think someone just gets handed a career in politics on a silver platter, just so he can use it as a two-bit ruse for some kind of cartoon-evil plan to take over the world? oh yeah - george bush, connecticut born rich kid got handed it. he didnt have to work for anything - and look what good he's done. think responsibly people, for yourselves, your families, and your country.

McCain and Palin need to realize the enormity of this situation and how this could alter any plans they have for a future in politics. They also need to be aware of the outcomes, should something, God forbid, happen to Sen. Obama because of some nutjob. If Americans think the economy is bad now, it would get worse, community and race relations would be set back 40 years, riots, distrust, and the Republicans party would forever be branded as racists.

So I think McCain ought to behave as the honorable man he says he is.

Even if these were so-called Obama "plants" it doesn't change the fact that McCain or Palin allowed them. They should have stopped right there and denounced these racist, hateful remarks. To anyone still thinking of voting for McCain please google "The McCain-Palin Mob" or "The Sidewalk to Nowhere" and watch the YouTube videos. These are REAL McCain supporters waiting in line for his events! I seriously doubt all of them are Obama plants. This is getting serious and I hope McCain stops it before its too late.

Eddie, take a pill. You may not like his experience, you may prefer Gov. Palin's--but Obama is experienced enough. He's a steady guy. He's a Christian. He's a faithful family man. Like all Presidents he'll have help. He couldn't do a worse job than W who has run the country and the economy into the ground..

The Reverend Martin Luther King suggested to judge men by the content of their character rather than the color of their skin. Look beyond your fear and give the guy a chance.

The McCain strategy works for 2 reasons whether he wins or loses.

1. McCain can fool enough ignorant sideline voters in key battleground states to skew the vote based on lies and innudeno about Obama. That is what I think McCain's advisors are HOPING will happen, but the plan also has a fallback if/when it fails:

2. Mcain knows he's going to lose, so his strategy getting the base angered and fired up is the republican's best strategy for 2010. They want to keep people so MAD at Obama once he's in, that they can try to rekindle the Gingrich backlash of 1994 all over again. Imagine how crazy the pundits like Hannity, Limbaugh and Coulter will be with their shows, rhetoric and democrat-hate during a rare time when all 3 branches are controlled by the dems in November.

Either that or he wants someone to actually take a gunshot at Obama. This is really showing the true colors of the red-meat republicans.

This sort of public racism and hatred is what gets people killed.

Heads up. A conservative website is directing people her to post. Republicans DO NOT believe in labor unions it is part of their core philosophy. That's fine. They are entitled to believe in that ideology. I think trying to imply Obama is a Muslim extremist is just ignorant. Next thing they'll say is he was really having tea with osama bin laden on his trip to Iraq. I wonder if anyone even realizes that the majority of American Muslims voted conservative in the 2000 election. I don't see McCain painted with a terrorist brush because of the group Muslims for McCain. I think it's time people understand that Most American Muslims whether for McCain or Obama are Americans and not terrorists.

John McCain has always had my respect. I am a true independent voter who supported McCain strongly all the way.....all the way up until he picked Sarah Palin as his running mate. At that point, I began to question his motives...it just didn't seem like a McCain move. Then came the really sad commentary about Obama's charachter and ties to a situation that happened oh so many years ago when Obama was eight years of age. Then came the angry shouts from his supporters (hardcore Republican base) at the rallies this past week. I would love to support John McCain still, I really like him, but I can't be a part of all this now. He's lost me.

Winston Churchill said, "Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it" but it was perhaps, Sinclair Lewis who said it best. "Fascism will come to America waving a flag and carrying a cross." That anyone is surprised that this happening in America is beyond me. The Republican Party has been stoking the fires of hatred, fear and division for a generation and have used the fundamentalist fringe of American society just as Hilter and his hencemen stoked - and used - the Brownshirts to kill Communists and Socialists and muzzle all who disagreed with them. Let's not forget that their power only grew after the global economic collapse that started in 1929. The recent slaughter of Liberal churchgoers may have only been the beginning. As Pastor Martin Niemöller lamented, "When the Nazis came for the communists, I remained silent; I was not a communist. When they locked up the social democrats, I remained silent; I was not a social democrat...When they came for me, there was no one left to speak out."

Be afraid of these people, America. Very afraid

Unfortunately, as having experienced senility first hand with close relatives, I see clear signs that Senator McCain may be showing signs of Alzheimers Disease. If you study the most recent debate and his public appearances closely , he demonstrates brief lapses in thought, presence and focus. Dangerous to have in a president- our country unknowingly was out of control through President Reagan's last two years once he'd come down with advanced Alzheimers. Perhaps it's not too late for the GOP to re-nominate a nominee.

McCain is attempting to do to Obama what Bush, Sr. (under Lee Atwater’s advice) did to Dukakis. Lee Atwater is the guy who invented Karl Rove's tricks. He advised Bush, Sr. He decided he was going to make Willie Horton, a black ex-con from Massachusetts, Dukasis' "running mate." (Sound familiar?) Atwater's colleagues said that it was an attempt to raise race as an issue to stir up fear in an election they could not win on the issues. In an interview, Atwater used the "N" word, saying essentially, that the GOP can't use that word anymore, so the GOP uses code words (like welfare mom) instead. The GOP has used the Southern Strategy/Culture War strategy to win elections. Aside from being racist, this strategy is just plain short-sighted. Each republican who has gotten elected using this strategy has had zero credibility and zero moral authority to govern on inauguration day. The Bush I and Bush II administrations went down in history as unmitigated train wrecks, and they increasingly destroyed the Republican brand each time this strategy was employed. By contrast, when Bill Clinton was running for president and was urged to be tougher by his staffers, he would say that there is a line that should not be crossed because "we just might win" and then what? He got it. The GOP still does not get it. McCain is obviously using the Atwater strategy, but it's even more despicable this time, because McCain's supporters are shouting violent epithets, and McCain is showing no leadership to denounce them. Talk about associations! It’s McCain’s supporters at his rallies who are behaving like dangerous extremists. McCain is finishing off the job Bush, Sr. started (and Bush, Jr. perfected), destroying the Republican party brand.

To #129 - "IF (& GOD FORBID) Obama gets assasinated because of Palin's and McCain's words, the next president and vice-president of the United States of America will be murderers."

Do you really think the Repugnicans will WIN if something tragic happens to Obama? I suspect that the Democrats would win in a landslide then, because there would be little question what party was responsible. Of course the Democrats would nominate another candidate... I hope it doesn't come to that, but I remember a right-wingnut in a college class I was in back in 1992 hoping fervently that somebody would kill Clinton (and there were a couple of attempts, too). To think that most of these people go to church is just wierd.

Because McCain palled around with the Keating 5. Because Sarah Palin pals around with the AIP whose founder has said: "The fires of hell are frozen glaciers compared to my hatred for the American government," Vogler said in the interview, in which he talked extensively about his desire for Alaskan secession, the key goal of the AIP. "And I won't be buried under their damn flag," Vogler continued in the interview, which also touched on his disappointment with the American judicial system. "I'll be buried in Dawson. And when Alaska is an independent nation they can bring my bones home." At another point, Volger advocated renouncing allegiance to the United States. In the course of denouncing Federal regulation over land, he said: "And then you get mad. And you say, the hell with them. And you renounce allegiance, and you pledge your efforts, your effects, your honor, your life to Alaska." Guess that makes Sarah Palin a domestic terrorist as well. And what about all of those neo-cons who have bombed abortion clinics and Planned Parenthood clinics or killed doctors? Those people are domestic terrorists and what party is palling around with them?

It's so over for the Rebpulicans.

We had eight years of NeoCon Bush/Cheney 2 unfinished wars, the slow poisoning of a once healthy economy, the fiscal bailout of the airlines, the insurance companies after 911 and again in 2008. The rhetoric that came out of Washington with all the color coded terror alerts was be afraid of any person of color, and especially if they are Muslims. Christian organizations especially Evangelicals and Pentecostals had this whisper campaign going on against all people of color, the full gospel business fellowship had a speaker from Homeland Security come and talk and increase paranoia levels among these christians, I have watched them in supermarkets and other places always afraid of colored people, always eyeing them with suspicion, if they speak a different language or speak with an accent it is even worse. At work places these folks bully them into leaving the job. The word Christian means the anointed one, follower of the Messiah, Jesus Christ asked that we pray for our enemies, and forgive seventy times seven, turn the other cheek when smitten by our enemies.
Pagans like Gandhi took his message and lead a non violent movement against their colonial rulers.
In a country that professes to be Christian sadly one does not often see his followers practice what Christ preached beginning with the President Bush and followed by evangelical preachers like John Hagee and the likes of him. Jesus weeps every time these folk who profess to talk to him daily and hear from him continually speak in his name. By the way Jesus did not like capitalists, who arranged to have him crucified because he stood up to them, He was a socialist who feed five thousand men women and children for free paid for by the grace of God. We ought to be ashamed of ourselves, we are choosing a leader to lead this nation, vilifying them while the world watches, how can we expect them to respect these candidates if one them wins after we have torn their decency away and made them despicable in the eyes of the citizens and our children.
This is a moment in history we all need to put aside our differences, put aside all the brainwashing we have had to be our brothers keeper and not call it socialism.
The World is watching America. We must once again arise to be the great Nation we are are work to wipe away the debt created by irresponsible fiscal policies (even the USSR when it collapsed did not have a national debt as great as ours)
Bring back our nation with hard work and God's graces to be the great nation the we were intended to be, The City on the Hill.

When Sarah Palin disparaged the "community organizing" of Barack Obama in her convention speech, and then attacked the free press by suggesting that they were anti-American, she, in that speech, destroyed the candidacy of John McCain. The vitriol that grew from her initial attacks on Obama have now morphed into what people are recognizing as seriously dangerous rhetoric reminiscent of the rallies of Hitler, even as Floridian Jews who attended McCain's rallies recognized this cancer and had to leave, even though they supported John. It is truly unfortunate that the message Palin has sent to the American public has been so destructive. I am sorry for John McCain. There is no way I can see that he will survive this development. And now that Palin has been charged with ethics violations in her own home state, how can we trust her? Whether or not Obama is right for America, Palin is not even a choice at this juncture. This election has been seriously compromised for the conservative agenda by virtue of the fact that they chose such a poor advocate in the Governor of Alaska

We never thought the emergence of the first non-white president of America was going to be easy. This is definitely time for uncertainty, fear and adventures. Nevertheless, this moment sooner or later has to come. The world is changing. There are other significant international players who are emerging now. Take East Asia for example. It is no longer the case that only the North America and Western Europe control the world economy and politics together. Whether the Western media is acknowledging it or not, the truth is East Asia, headed by China, Japan, South Korea and to a lesser extent Taiwan, is making its influence felt. Same goes to OPEC as well. Just ask the US treasury where their money is coming from. Ignore them at your own risk. In this changing time, we are about to see a different leader of the US emerging and it is to be embraced wholeheartedely because we need a different leader for a very different time we find ourselves in now.

One of the most reliable indicators I have used over the years when I am not sure who I should vote for, is to wait and see who organised labor unions back the strongest and vote for the opponent. This has always been trustworthy since the union's choice is invariably based on who will do most for the "Union" and not for the worker. Unions are the only group that is more corrupt than the government.

I just decided to vote for Bob Barr..... Neither McCain or Obama have anywhere near the philosophical depth to be president. Libertarians are the only party with real choices other than the same old same old.

Given the sad of assassinations of public figures in our nations’ history, Mrs. Palin and Mr. McCain will carry a heavy responsibility on their shoulders if something stupid happened to senator Obama now or after the election. The Republican Party and its candidates have a moral duty to stop the inflammatory rhetoric and get back to real issue affection all of us: the economy. Obama and McCain are qualified to run for President of the United States. Period.

John McCain town hall meetings are beginning to look more like angry lynch mobs as he and Palin whip up their frenzied crowds. The dispicible and blatant displays of hatred that are exhibited by their followers is reminisent of the behavior of the mobs that attacked civil rights marches in the Jim Crow era. John McCain says the he would rather lose an election than lose a war, but he doesn't mind playing with fire and risk enflaming the nation.

Now, the mass followers of these extremist talk show hosts are urging their political leaders to take off the gloves and be like these extremist talk show hosts....all in the guise of patriotism and Christianity.

Talking about Obama Plant at McCain's rally is absurd. The Black guy who beg McCain to do something about Rev. Wright and got a hug from McCain is planted for camera shot. I 'll tell you, why? He was within reach (Black) from the podium to McCain. McCain, always hesitates for pumping hands if he sees someone different (look at previous videos of his rally). He waves, though he can do the latter effortless. The white lady with red dress who claims OBAMA is ARAB, was reading an index card to only question McCain and McCain almost snatched the mic from her to retract the accusation by himself. I rest my case. Good luck for the losers.

I watched Jay Leno last night and in his show opening Monologue he made 6 negative jokes about McCain and Palin. Referenced Obama only once not at all negatively. He even had pics made up to denagrate Palin and McCain. How about Lettermans tyraid after McCain Stood him up. i have no problem for scolding him for it, but Letterman took advantage of the situation to degrade him as much as possible. Would he have done the same to Obama. You all know the answer to that. The Media and hollywood is running this election by constantly bombarding people with negatives about and only positives about Obama. This is very freightening to me. I know strong Obama supporters are enjoying it. but it is very bad for Democracy

McCain / Palin Supporters...Stop humping Fox News on your TV sets, read a few history books, scan a newspaper from time to time, and be careful what you wish for. Old, Rich, Angry, Republican White guys with Old, Rich, Angry Republican Fathers, don't give a crap about you or your family. They're only protecting their money and their power--that's it! So, why do you keep voting for them?

I'll assume if you want McCain / Palin in office, then you obviously voted for Bush / Cheney. Well, you got what you wanted--eight years of downward spiral. Our country is in the worst condition since the Great Depression. Thanks!

Republicans...you dowsed your own homes with gasoline--you lit them on fire, you're watching them burn, and now your accusing democrats of being the arsonists? Nice try.

McCain = McCarthy

Do any of you Obama fans out there not see the potential problems with a democrat president and a democrat congress that is inept and has some very questionable characters i.e. Franks, and Dodd. How do most of you think that Obama is going to pay for the bailout? Taxes, that's how. Besides how much of what either candidate's promises do you actually think they can actually accomplish? Maybe 10% I say. Perhaps the greatest thing we should fear with an Obama win and a cozy congress is widening the path toward Socialism. We will one day be The Socialist Republic of America. Not good people. Start thinking on your own.

I find it funny that the bigots that were posting here do not have much to say about Sarah Palin and her association with the AIP. A group that hates America so much that it doesn't even want to be a part of the good old usa. I men, didn't she make a speech to that group as early as this year? Weren't the main members in that group pretty much responsible for getting her elected mayor and then governor? It is funny how some bigots choose to see what they want to see rather than the truth.

Sen. McCain has made disastrous decisions throughout this campaign. His campaign for example has incited crowds by making false references and now when all hell seems to be breaking loose, he wants to tone it down. Obama is winning this thing coz he has managed to tie McCain to Bush. During the second debate, McCain had perhaps the greatest persuasive argument against Obama when he linked him voting in favor of a Bush/ Cheney economic bill. But poor Ol' misguided McCain refered to Barack as "that one" and the message of that particular Important point disappeared into thin air. He deserves to loose.

wow. i just read all of these comments. i am truly ashamed of the average American. This is the 21st century, and comment after comment is unsubstantiated bigotry or ignorance. I am praying for our country on a daily basis now.

Some of the commentary here is completely absurd. Sandra Bernhard? that nobody? You are comparing her comment to "kick someone's @$$", to a Presidential candidate's failure to address his supporters when they call a US Senator a terrorist? Mr. Obama is still a US Senator, and not one who was almost charged for ethics violations (search Keating Five), or WAS FOUND GUILTY of ethics violations like Mrs. Palin (search Troopergate).

Stop being ignorant, read more about what is really happening people. Why must Americans hide behind hate and bigotry when they are confronted with the reality that their preferred perspective is simply inaccurate?

For the past 8 years we've had a very Patriotic President..his qualifications were null but he was Patriotic. Now we have a Qualified canadate whom some Americans choose to question his Patriotism. He's more patriotic then he should be and America Is Blessed & should be happy that he is..

It would truly be a terrible moment in our nation's history if McCain and Palin were to be elected on their platform of hate and lies. There was a time I had some respect for McCain. But he has completely lost my respect. In fact I must have been mistaken all along to think that he had any honor. If he becomes president I will still have no respect for him. But even worse if he becomes president it will show the world that the days of an inspiring America are over. If he becomes president the world will see that America is ruled by hate, fear and bigotry and that every other country had better be afraid because a hate filled, angry old man and his ill-informed religious fundamentalist vp are in charge and they are erratic and filled with negativity. not very knowledgeable oh and yes, frickin idiots!
- McCain Supporter

I bet this young person could school you on foreign policy and a host of other issues. Ageism works both ways.

Anyway. Has anyone else been struck by the Atwater-Rove-Schmidt driven tactics of the McCain/Palin campaign, and '1984'? This last week has been like a series of Two Minutes Hate vignettes. Not quite Hate Week, but it was about time for him to confront those few racists in the crowd who can't tell the difference between a Kenyan, Arab, and Muslim. Such nuances are surely lost on people who don't realize Christians in Bethlehem are Palestinian, etc! I give him credit for that... finally! Cindy McCain accusing Obama of running the dirtiest campaign in American History, is not only bad history, but some serious contemporary doublethink! McCain is better than this. He said that he'd rather win a war than lose an election. Seeing him reel back at some of his audience members makes me wonder, as a man who I do believe is a reluctant participant in his people's smears, if he'd rather lose the election without these people than win it with them. You know sure as hell that people who aren't voting for Obama 'cause they think he's Arab or Muslim, aren't voting for him because he's black anyway. Bigotry is bigotry... is bigotry! And McCain had said earlier in his run that he doesn't want their vote. But hey, IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH!

"A union job is a good job, you would be lucky to have one", because the are unsustainable, based on faulty economics and a thing of the past when we did not have to worry about the rest of the world. That is the sole reason GM, Ford and Chrysler are going belly up. That is the reason there is no steel plants in the US.
That is why Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and other union states are loosing jobs. That legislation that Obama "The radical leftist," will bring to this country. The reason we are getting mad is because no body is pointing out he issues at hand, especially the media. This is not a racial issue it is an anti American anti capitalist issue. Why would we not be mad, why would we not be pissed off when ACORN is out their committing voter fraud for him. I have not heard him say anything about that. I never heard him tell the union thugs to not threaten their co-workers who supported McCain, or even Clinton.

What can on expect from the stooges of the Far Right other than to act as did Hitler's Stormtroopers? Nothing. The Far Right is nothing but a bunch of Nazis, and should be ostracized, isolated and put in camps for re-education. If they can't be re-educated -- well, you get my drift. Any responsible thinking person in the US has no choice but to vote against any and all members of the Republican Party -- and to help drive them out of existence.

Your solution sounds just as Fascist as those you are condemning.

If John McCain is an honorable man, why then did he pick a clueless young woman as his running mate and thrust her onto the national political stage? A truly honorable man who had the nation's best interest at heart would have selected a seasoned VP candidate who could have brought real value to the Republican ticket. Instead, McCain pulled a stunt that has begun to reak like a dead corpse. When Nov. 4 rolls around, voters will be more than happy to bury the sad memory of a former honorable man whose negative campaign heaped shame and disgust on the Republican party.

A terrorist is someone who intentionly, verbally and continually incites others to anger, bigotry and violence, in ways that could lead to outbreaks of physical violence. By this standard, in some number of its rallies, the McCain/Palin campaign are inciting their followers and are engaging in acts of domestic terrorism that are dangerous and potentially destructrive. The press and other media would do well to make published note of this.

Yep, I've considered the 'plant' issue. However, I think it likely they are plants by the Rove operatives and the 'for McCain' crowd. This line of name-calling is to get the base riled up and is not something done by outsiders to get the campaign to look bad. Palin especially is repeating and reinforcing those attitudes and I believe yesterday was the first time when McCain actually said something. And that was at a small rally where he was speaking face to face with people. I believe the viciousness has upset McCain - it wouldn't have been his chosen style - but the old saying is: sleep with dogs you get fleas. It's the line Palin wants - the fear and hate and it's the chosen way Rove likes. McCain probably remembers well how it is to be on the receiving end of the hate-mongering.

If John McCain wants to retain any respectability after this election, he needs to distance himself from these supporters far more forcefully than he did on Friday. This frenzied, moronic, and racist dogma has no place in 21st century American politics. By trying to associate Obama with a terrorist, McCain & Palin have provided aid and comfort to the lowest, most intellectually challenged GOP elements. He should be ashamed. America should be ashamed.

In response to Steven Wilson: Since when are the Democrats killing babies. Are you telling me that every female who walks through the doors of a clinic or hospital for an abortion is a Democrat, I don't think so! How about the fact that 6 out of 9 of the Suprememe Court Justices in Roe V Wade were appointed by Republican Presidents, and the final vote was 5 Republican justices and 2 Democratic voting for Roe V Wade, and 1 Republican and 1 Democratic justice voting against. This makes the Democrats responsible for all the baby killing - I think not! I am really tired of the Republicans blaming the Democrats for all the abortions.

Eight short yeras ago I was relieved that John McCain was a Republcan candidate for the Presidency. At least then we would have a decent man who would not take us down the excesses of the Bush agenda promoting "Christian hatred" - an oxymoron indeed! Now we have John McCain leeting his operatives run a Bush campaign of division and hatred. Our system is set up that you get the best government money can buy (Problem 1) and the you get exactly who enough of you turn out to vote for, who then seems to see a small majority as a mandate to promote etremist policies What happened to "Government of the people, by the people, FOR the people". It may just be perishing from the earth. God bless the founding fathers. THe sooner we get back to their wisdom and vision, the better.

US soldiers are still in the Balkans but remain there iin stark contract to Bush's war of choice in Iraq. Clinton ordered US ground troops along with NATO forces and eventually UN peacekeepers into the Balkans only after the precision aerial bombardment around Belgrade. Clinton's intervention stopped the genocide and halted a regional conflict that could have engulfed all of Europe. Clinton, unlike Bush, had a well designed war plan that was implemented by knowledgeable people, unlike the not neocon policy wonks who have so thoroughly screwed up Iraq.

If you re-play the moment when Palin turns and runs the line about her son being in the war defending a heckler's "right to expression," you notice a few truly odd aspects of her reaction. First, she knows EXACTLY where he is in the crowd, which is impossible because he is behind her. Next, there is no delay, no thought or pause to her rejoinder...she is READY, she is 100% prepared.

It is not the response of a person who is interrupted, it FLOWED...a fully rehearsed aspect of her presentation. This comment was SCRIPTED with the intent of inflaming the crowd...the event was staged.
