McCain closing gap slightly, separating himself from Bush, poll says

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor October 20, 2008 12:35 PM

A new national poll released this afternoon suggests the presidential race is tightening ever so slightly.

Among likely voters, Democrat Barack Obama leads Republican John McCain 51 percent to 46 percent -- down from 53 percent to 45 percent two weeks ago, according to the CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey.

Among registered voters, Obama's lead has shrunk to 53 percent to 43 percent from 56 percent to 42 percent, the poll found.

The survey also found that Obama continues to hold sizable leads in being better able than McCain to handle the financial crisis and to help the middle class.

But it found a significant change in how voters view McCain and whether he would bring a break from President Bush.

Now, a majority of voters -- 52 percent of likely voters and 50 percent of registered voters -- believe that McCain would mean "mostly different policies." Two weeks ago, 54 percent of likely voters and 56 percent of registered voters said that McCain would mostly carry out Bush's policies.

McCain said in last week's final presidential debate and in every stump speech since that he is not Bush and if Obama wanted to run against Bush, he should have run four years ago.

The survey was conducted Friday through Sunday and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points among likely voters and 3 percentage points among registered voters.

McCain has been buddy-buddy with Bush for years. He sure has no problem throwing Bush under the bus now to entice his political ambitions. Great friend he turned out to be, huh?

Of course he has thrown Obama under the bus for months. I wonder how it feels to run a campaign dedicated to nothing but lies and half truths. I am ashamed of McCain and his shabby campaign techniques.

The Obama campaign thrives on 2 things: evasiveness when answering a question, and running against Bush. Camp Obama knows they can't answer the questions honestly about Obama's voting record and past affiliations with seedy characters (Wright, Rezko, Ayers), nor can they run against McCain who has a stellar character reputation and is a true independent thinker. Every 20-30 years Amercians need a reminder of how bad the country can be run, and now it will be Obama's chance to be the fool. Jimmy Carter should be the happiest guy in the country if BHO wins!

I believe that the changes in poll numbers that are being quoted in this article are within the margine of error of the poll (about +- 4%), which means the change is statistically meaningless. It would be nice if reporters who use polling data would educate themselves enough on statistics and polls that they actually knew what they were talking about. If you look at the range in poll numbers you get some idea of how much variability there is in polling data. Some polls show Obama with double digit leads while others show Obama with only 4 percent ahead, that gives you some idea of how significant a change of 1 or 2 points is. Now if we see all the polls moving away from Obama, then there may be some statistical significance worth noting.

What if McCain wins?
The damages from four years of a White House program of hate and anger directed against the majority of the American people will be piled on top of the eight year program that is just ending.
When McCain dies and his VP takes over, it seems unlikely that she would open the Republican embrace to include more Americans than McCain.
On the good side, the Republican crusade against the rest of the world (don't talk to enemies, don't talk to friends who do anything we dislike, invade countries preemptively if we think they might do something some day, and so on) will be slowed down by the collapse of theconomy.

It's about time.

John McCain is NOT G. W. Bush and it's about time the people understood that.

The leading party choices on the Nov. ballot will be McCain/Palin .vs Obama/Biden

Or , perhaps it should be printed with their plans :

Socialism (Obama / Biden ) .vs Capitalism ( McCain / Palin )

The fear rises. What if? The real deal, a reformer, a guy who may have half of Washington standing in court testifying they took part in stealing $700billion, for their yachts and girls. Paying to Grease the palms of advertisers, and media spokesmen. Grass roots with in a recognized party. A V.P. who's not an elitist. Not a doctor or lawyer,or cpa. A candidate who doesn't believe in Washington whoredom. On the other side a guy who says he's gonna change it all. Dismantle the power and destroy the very economy that everyone wants to get back to. Who's who ? Go figure!!

Don't be an ignorant. McCain was never Bush's friend. Only libs will believe that lie. McCain his own man, always been, thats why it was hard for him to get his own party on board at the beginning.
Obama has a tendency to throw his own friends under the bus, like he did to Wrigh, Rezko, Hillary and his own grandmother, when he doesn't ned them anymore. Typical Chicago corrupt politician.

Obama faces a very difficult task when running on a platform that does not endorse that good old American tradition of "Shock and Awe". The majority of Americans at the end of this would vote Jack the Ripper over a Saint when the chance of bombing another country is taken out of the equation. Bush 's 2004 race proves this need in the America of today and history shows war after war is the American way. McCain/Palin will win because they give America what the majority wants. The only hope of stopping this horror are the youth of today and tomorrow, that's it.

After the last eight years, I'm surprised the repugnican party even exists and am appalled that the Democrats have a mere 6 point lead.

McCain is a far greater break from Bush's policies than Obama. The Bush Administration has greatly expanded the power of the federal government: Just look at the Patriot Act and No Child Left Behind that Bush got through. Also, count how many former Bush officials are supporting Obama, including Colin Powell, whose lies about WMDs caused the Iraq War.

In contrast, McCain and Palin will return us to the true conservative principles that caused the Reagan economic boom. That is real change!

I love this. John McCain distancing himself from Bush & Co.? Last time I checked his name still had an (R) next to it and he has been proven to in stride with all the President's policies. Why not be proud of your President & YOUR party? I have not heard the outrage of the torture, spending, secret meetings, energy policies, or anything else from John, and if he did provide quiet outrage, his stance changed, like on torture! So much for "maverick" status. You are either a Republican or not, and yes, G.W. Bush is STILL the President, and the wreckage of the Economy, the Envriornment, and the downword spiral of the world's view of us continues with him part of the Senate.

CNN aired a McCain soundbyte this morning inwhich McCain himself states: "I've voted for George Bush's policies 90 percent of the time, much more than the average Republican." Stated in McCain own voice and yet we have those poor pathetic Republican supporters that are still trying to sell the "McCain is Change" concept. Absolutely astounding......and ignorant for that matter. As far as small businesses go, the threshold is $250,000.00 ***NET*** dollars people. whoever say Bush=McCain are idiots.
McCain had to drop out of 2000 presidential race because Bush's people tried to destroy McCain and his family, espeically to his adopted girl from Bangladesh.
I know McCain hates Bush more than anyone else.
I honestly believe that McCain will lead us and this country to the right direction and will help us prosper in the next few years. Look into his life, this guy has been beaten many times and he just stood right back. Not only him, his wife, his family struggled a lot and they built their lives back up. I'm sure he'll do the same to this country.

For Obama, he’s nothing but a showoff person, with no Identity. Nobody knows who and what he really is. There are so many facts hiding behind him.

for generations the liberals have supported generations of people who are now accostomed to have government exchange their votes for a living. Acorn is making this happen in a way never before seen. Obama will"organize' this country into a community of people where a few work and the rest dont. This is socialism,

Hey DB (17)! You use a 60s song to indict baby boomers. You must be one very conflicted soul. You are also making an assumption that the youth of this country will vote. Guess what? They won't. They'll be wrapped up on election day talking on MySpace and Facebook, sending text messages about who they just laid, playing video games, and drinking beers that mom and dad are paying for. Give you guys a chance? Not a chance. AARP members will eat your lunch come election day.

Can anyone else here profess to having any association with a known terrorist? Obama received a scholarship from Ayerst, a terrorist, then gave $250K back to him - the two were known associates who live in the same neighborhood with Luis Farakhan and Jeremiah Wright, Obama's pastor and "family" member who wants God to damn America and who spreads hatred of white people. Tony Reisko (sp?) bought Obama's property, then sold it to him for a pittance (as a political favor), before being convicted for bribery. Obama represented ACORN, a voter fraud group, later asking them for their support - and donating hundreds of thousands so they could hire more people to manipulate votes in the same manner as happens in Chicago, Obama's political birthplace. Now, any God-fearing, USA loving patriot would not only disassociate themselves from these thugs, he/she would at the first sight of these crooks seek their demise. Obama actually supported these hate-mongers and criminals. Obama - the Change ($$ - $180M in contributions including foreigners hostile to America) candidate - you can buy him and you can count on him to lead a socialist revolution in support of some of his biggest backers: Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez. Wake-up America! Our brothers and sisters have shed their blood to protect us against the likes of Barack (named Barry by his parents and changed to honor his African-Muslim heritage - p.s., he practiced Islam as a child) Hussein Obama. NoBama!!!!!!!!

There is nothing I hate more than Liberals except perhaps, Obama. What is this country coming to? His own vice president pick,
Joe Biden has said that an Obama presidency will bring a lot test from the other nations. I bet that would never happen with a McCain presidency.
Trust me the other nations would be afraid to try. I find things hard to believe. Jimmy Carter was the worst president that this country has ever had,
and an Obama presidency would be worse. I am sick and tired of everyone bitching about President Bush. He in not alone in our financial crisis.
Remember Senate has been democratic for 6 years and the house of representatives for 2. Its hard for a president to get things done.
I also want to say that no other president has had to deal with something like 911 before and we've been safe since. I think that says something.
I vote republican each and ever time because I want to be safe. Only a republican presidency can offer me that because they understand defense. I am
heart broken by Colin Powell, because I always thought he would have made a great president. Now he for the first time in his life he has endorsed a man
that's not only a liberal but inexperienced. In my opinion the only reason he endorsed Obama is because of race. The Kennedy's have tons of skeletons
in their closets including murder and the wonderful, Bill Clinton was a draft dodger who denounced his country on Russian soil. This is whom the liberals
consider good men. I personally think Senator John McCain is without a fact the most courages man in politics and I am thankful for men like
him that allow me to enjoy freedom. He fought for this country while Bill Clinton was denouncing it. I appreciate all that he has done & I will
vote for him unconditionally.

Just remember the 2004 election when John Kerry had Ohio and Florida won, according to polls the eve of the election. Only to see a 6 and 8 point, respectively, turn-around. In 24 hours, no less. It's called the ACORN effect. ACORN has skewered the Dem to Rep ratio, that polls being conducted by that measure are going to be way off. ACORN has done this for many election cycles and it's worse this year. Then when their Messiah loses, they always have the "disenfranchised voter" card to use, yet again.

This whole election is a repeat of 1976. You elect Obama, you elect Carter. I we know what disaster that was. There is no difference. People need to wake up. Obama is not talking about taking Joe the Plumbers money and giving it to people without jobs. That is ridiculous and untrue. He is talking about Mega rich people who are raking in obscene profits while paying their workers minimum wage. If they complain too loud about the low wages, they look for workers in India or China to do the work so they can make even higher profit.

Think about the Walmart hiers making billions a year while their workers can't pay rent. Think about mortgage and finance CEO's with paychecks of 487 million over three years while they rape homeowners. Think about Oil execs making 500 billion a year in profit while they bleed America dry.

Wake up people. These mega rich 1-5% don't let ANYTHING trickle down. They rape the American worker for everything they can and they DON'T PAY TAXES! They write off losses, find every loophole and then have folks like McCain subsidize them. AND YES ... paying taxes is patriotic!! It is how we fund America. The problem is that the middle class carries the burden while the mega-rich carry off the rewards.

McCain is a wonderful man. When the North Vietnamese told him he could be released because his father was an admiral, he told them no, first in, first out. He undoubtedly knew he would be tortured more, and he was. I wish he was running a less negative campaign, but Obama has also been negative. Obama also lied during the last debate when he said that 100 % of McCain's ads were negative; surely, he knew this was not the case. Meanwhile, the majority of Obama's ads run in Maryland have been negative. Anyway, I believe McCain is the best candidate for the job. He's pro-life, pro-small business, and a true maverick.

Forget 76, this is the Clinton-Gore election all over again. "It's the economy stupid". Don't know how you can blame Bush for the economy when the congress has more influence on it- and it's under a democratic majority at the moment. The left-leaning media have given Obama every advantage, including a free pass on every controversial issue but then dragging Palin, McCain and everything about them over the coals. Liberalism never wins a popularity contest, and much like Clinton, Obama has been hiding his liberal core. I just hope not too much damage isn't done before, two years from now, this can be reversed in the congress- like we did with Clinton and Gore during thier term and pushed the D's out and replaced them with more R's..... oh, by the way. This election isn't about pushing out CONSERVATIVES.... just republicans that have been acting like liberals. We need Reagan style conservatives to return again.
