McCain says he'll come from behind to win

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor October 10, 2008 02:03 PM

Republican John McCain focused today as much on his falling poll numbers as the faltering economy in his latest town hall event in a Midwest battleground.

McCain, asking for help in a "tough and hard-fought election," declared himself the underdog, but vowed to come from behind again.

Reminding supporters that pundits had written off his presidential bid last year, McCain told the crowd in La Crosse, Wisc.: "We're going to fool them again. We're going to fool them one more time."

He said the stakes in the election could not be higher now with the financial meltdown, vowing to get the economy back on track. McCain promoted his plan for the government to directly buy distressed mortgages to preserve the "American dream" of homeownership.

In its response, the Obama campaign highlighted McCain saying today that the funds for his $300 billion mortgage proposal "aren't new," though he suggested in an interview Thursday night with ABC News that it could require money above the $700 billion included in the financial rescue package approved last week.

“John McCain’s response to the economic crisis has grown so erratic that in the span of twelve hours, he completely reversed his position on whether or not his risky and illegal bailout scheme would be financed with additional taxpayer dollars. Whatever position Senator McCain finally settles on, experts from across the political spectrum have made it clear that his bailout scheme is a guaranteed loser for taxpayers and would hand our money to the very Wall Street banks and lenders who got us into this mess. Barack Obama is offering steady leadership and has been championing ideas to stabilize the financial system, protect taxpayers, help homeowners stay in their homes, and create new jobs,” said Obama spokesman Hari Sevugan.

McCain said to protect investors, rules that require retirees to sell their 401k at a certain time should be suspended so that they aren't locked into market losses.

"We must also protect investors – especially those relying on their investments for retirement," McCain said. "Current rules mandate that investors must begin to sell off their IRAs and 401Ks when they reach age 70 and one half. To spare investors from being forced to sell their stocks at just the time when the market is hurting the most, those rules should be suspended."

UPDATE: McCain's campaign this afternoon issued some details of the proposal:

To help investors -- especially those relying on investments for retirement -- John McCain today proposed waiving the requirement that seniors sell their retirement assets once they reach the age of 70 ½. Sections 401(a)(9)(A) and 401(a)(9)(C) of the U.S. Tax Code require that Americans must begin taking disbursements from their retirement accounts either on April 1st of the calendar year following the later of the calendar year in which the employee attains age 70½ or the calendar year in which the employee retires.

John McCain proposes that Congress waive this requirement which, by force of law, is making seniors sell their retirement assets at substantial loss. There is no reason to force the unlucky few who find themselves currently hitting this mandated timeframe to sell holdings at a time when our stock markets are in turmoil.

In response to McCain's 401(k) proposal, Burton said, “Barack Obama supports allowing senior citizens to delay withdrawals from 401(k)s, and believes we don’t have to wait for Congress to act to provide seniors with these protections. He’s calling on the Treasury Secretary to temporarily suspend Treasury regulations and allow seniors to delay these withdrawals. He also hopes that Senator McCain will reconsider his ill-advised support for Social Security privatization, which suffers from the very same problem he is now trying to solve since it would potentially force seniors to retire when the market is down and their retirement accounts have disappeared. Senator Obama also calls on Senator McCain to support his new small business rescue plan that will extend badly-needed credit and tax relief to the men and women who are creating jobs in this troubled economy.”

But McCain also renewed his assault on Barack Obama, asserting that his Democratic rival has not been candid with voters. "He never answers the serious and legitimate questions he's been asked," McCain said.

He continued his criticism of Obama's proposals on healthcare, the housing crisis, and taxes. Obama's plans would increase the tax burden on small businesses. "They're the backbone of our economy," he said, vowing to lower their taxes.

Fool Who John McCain? All of us? We are not trying to fool folks we are trying to help us. Where are your priorities Senator McCain? Are you so poisoned by your thirst for power that you have forgotten?

The times are too serious to be pulling cheap dirty tricks like you have been doing. At home, we've got a heightening economic crisis, increasing joblessness threatening to undermine the livelihoods of entire towns, people's retirement savings decimated, folks getting thrown out of their homes, and a regulatory framework guided by ideology rather than pragmatism. Overseas, we're fighting two wars, an increasingly belligerent Iran, a resurgent Russia eager to reassert it's influence on the former soviet bloc (and now Venezuela), Ukraine destabilized, China rising, and North Korea unresolved, our alliances strained due to our unilateralism..the global tectonic plates are shifting...and here we have John McCain playing these dirty totally irrelevant political games, blatantly repeating lies, inciting hate in the electorate, destabilizing the markets with his political maneuvers, appointing an extremist running mate who knows NOTHING about the economy and the world a 72-year old heartbeat away from presidency, and dividing the country along choices (guns, race, abortion, religion, left-right) that are totally irrelevant to this new and very threatening environment, and having absolutely no solid plans to get us out of it. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! I cannot believe that John McCain is STILL not interested in challenging Obama's plans, and presenting to the American public why his plans are PRACTICALLY superior or relevant to the current environment, or how they are actually DOABLE. He has not explained ow his approach is a significantly different approach to the failures of the last 8 years. His healthcare plan is a farce, taxing my health benefits to give me a healthcare tax credit which will not buy me even a bare bones healthcare plan, his tax plan is unsustainable and rewards those who don't need it, he has absolutely no solid ideas for our recovery plans, he has offered no answers on how he is going to pay for the buyout of these bad loans, is spending freeze of 18 billion will not even come close to paying for his tax cuts AND his $300 billion ideas to pay for his home owner bailout 'plan', and absolutely no transition plan for when he assumes power so he can get to work on day one (he felt winning the election was more important than planning ahead), and shows the underlying influence of special interests in his policy making and his past judgement, and his foreign policy positions have been PROVEN wrong consistently, with his war mongering rhetoric getting increasingly aggressive...and NOW THIS???!!! YOU CAN HIRE EXPERIENCE, AND YOU CAN BUY KNOWLEDGE, BUT IF YOUR MORAL COMPASS IS MISALIGNED YOUR EXPERIENCE IS OF NO USE TO US. Stop telling us you can do it John McCain, TELL US HOW YOU ARE GOING TO DO IT. It infuriates me the absurdity that this once great man has stooped to. Is he THIS out of touch with reality? We need a serious president, with a steady and even temperament, who is willing to listen to EVERYONE and come up with solutions that work for ALL OF US. We need a president who has the intellect, and the moral compass pointing true north to our interests, who helps the nation focus on what we have in common, not why we are different...we need a president who understands that issues should lie at the foundation of political attacks, not baseless associations focused on dominating the next news cycle. We need someone whose inner circle of influence is not tainted by special interests and lobbists, who has the highest probability of reforming Washington. We need someone who understands the new world order, and who understands that war is but ONE tactic, along with intelligence, diplomatic and economic leverage in our overall strategy to counter our foreign policy challenges today. We need a president who is a calming voice in this cacophony of chaos, who calls out to the best within all of us to lead us out of this hole we've dug ourselves into, not divide us and calls on our hate. We need a President who is a pragmatist, who has been consistent, with judgment that is guided by good nature rather than a thirst for power. We need someone with new ideas, and a new approach to change our course in history. ENOUGH WITH THIS PETTY HATE MONGERING, THE TIMES ARE TOO SERIOUS FOR THIS KIND OF NONSENSE. I DON'T CARE IF HE IS BLACK, BLUE OR PURPLE, AND I DONT CARE IF HE IS PRO OR ANTI ABORTION, OR LIBERAL OR CONSERVATIVE...I JUST CARE THAT HE IS RIGHT FOR THE CHALLENGES WE NOW FACE. The dirty voter suppression and caging efforts of 2004 and 2000 are very much underway and already making huge impacts across all the swing states, we are now facing the possibility of THOUSANDS of obama voters getting turned away on election day, and the campaigning is only going to get more hateful. Do not believe the polls. Obama may be ahead, but they could steal it again unless we SHOW UP IN FORCE AND GET OUR PAPERWORK STRAIGHT. We cannot let them steal it again.

So what can we all now expect from a beaten candidate? His campaign advisors have nothing else to offer and nothing more to lose. And now McCain will bring down Republicans up and down the voting card in key battleground states. Maybe Sarah can buy back that corporate plane for the long ride home.

One more question . . . who make up the 25% Bush approval rating? Die-hards, rednecks, or just stubborn folks who really don't know better? Thanks Bush for getting us into this Depression.

Thank you Barney Frank and Chris Dodd for aiding and abetting Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac by blocking attempts at regulation.

I can't believe the comments I've seen on here so far. Of course, coming from the far left, what can I expect? For your info., one of the reasons McCain is behind is because of the voting fraud that is occurring right now that came in from ACORN (a group that Obama has donated money to in the past and worked with). Yes, McCain is going to come from behind and you libs are in for a real treat! Finally, things like Obama's connection to Ayers, etc. are coming to the surface! Hold on to your seatbelts libs, because it is going to be a bumpy ride!

I am horrified at the irresponsibility of McCain-Palin at their recent rallies. This rabble rousing and hate mongering is dangerous, incendiary, and totally unacceptable behaviour for a US senator and a US governor at a time when this country needs national unity to deal with it's economic problems and volatile foreign relations.

Its appropriate for John McCain to say he will come from behind.
Cause so far he has been a real ass.

Biden a Fool
He thinks Obama is not fit when he runs for president otherwise he is Fit

Obama is naive, has unknown family history

inexperienced like bush was in his first term.

His economic policies will ruin small business,

His health care plan will be a costly affair,

His tax plans would scare investors to other parts of world.

He speaks of alternative energy, opposed to drilling natural gas and building nuclear energy

We consume things at low price because Big corporations get tax cuts their spendign on innovations

If Big companies are taxed heavily , there will lose of jobs , loss of technical edge, higher priced commodities, higher cost of living

Mccain is attacking Root of problem mortegage Obama only wants to attach republicans he has no solid plan.

Obams lack of effectiveness showed up when he responded for russian attach on Georgia and opposition to surge

Mccain all years of experience brings balance and judgement to postion which wasnt there in Bush and Obama due to their in experience,Palen brings freshness of change and executive experience of reforms that she carried in alaska

When this shell of a man is turned out by the electorate, he truly deserves to spend the rest of his life with a tortured conscience at his low life behaviour. If the purpose of negative attacks was to energize the Republican base supporters then its has worked. Trying to get the independents onboard using this tactic is going to be a tall order. As an independent I will listen to both parties without any emotion and go with the candidate who articulates better, how they will tackle the economic and the healthcare issues facing the country.

Not distancing from a handful of hatemongering individuals at rallies may prove counterproductive.

One may see a parallel with John McCain and Bob Dole: both wounded in War, both thinking they deserved to be President, both exhibiting frustration having realized " that aint' going to happen." If either man had remained true to himself and not gone overboard with the pitiful and wrongheaded advice from those whom they had entrusted to advise then each would have become President. Go quietly John and enjoy your many days in retirement.

Twelve years of Republican control of Congress that ended in 2006, just two years ago. And since then, if you haven't noticed, Senate Republicans stonewall any legislation that doesn't pass their litmus tests - just look at the various Democratic Iraq War proposals that have been tabled. And any Democratic measure that does manage to go through is simply vetoed by Bush. Let's get real and put the blame for the mess squarely on the party that deserves it - the Republicans. Obama needs to just keep things calm and collected. The election is his. McCain and Palin will continue their irrelevant attacks and bring their supporters to a peak of hate and all it will do is drive moderates into Obama's camp.

The Obama campaign needs to watch out, however, because, under this smoke screen, McCain is dropping populist ideas on how to get us out of this horrible financial crisis into his campaign speeches hoping against hope that one of them will resonate with the electorate.

Palin may be popular with the far right and she is increasingly the voice of McCain's campaign but she will be the anchor that will eventually sink him. .

Speaking of coming from behind......

The July 3, 1998, Reliable Source column in The Washington Post reported Frank, who is openly gay, had a relationship with Herb Moses, an executive for the now-government controlled Fannie Mae. The column revealed the two had split up at the time but also said Frank was referring to Moses as his "spouse." Another Washington Post report said Frank called Moses his "lover" and that the two were "still friends" after the breakup.

Will the neocons who tutored George W. Bush in the ideology he pursued to the ruin of his presidency do the same for Sarah Palin?

Should they succeed, they will destroy her. Yet, they are moving even now to capture this princess of the right and hope of the party.

In St. Paul, Palin was told to cancel a meeting with Phyllis Schlafly and pro-life conservatives. McCain’s operatives said Palin had to rest for her Wednesday convention speech.

Yet, on Tuesday, Palin was behind closed doors with Joe Lieberman and officials of the Israeli lobby AIPAC. There, according to The Washington Post, Palin took and passed her oral exams.

“Palin assured the group of her strong support for Israel, of her desire to see the United States move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and of her opposition to Iran’s aspirations to become a nuclear power, according to sources familiar with the meeting.”

AIPAC’s mission, like that of Likud, is to goad America into launching air and missile strikes on any and all Iranian nuclear facilities. AIPAC went away happy. Purred spokesman Josh Block, “We were pleased that Gov. Palin expressed her deep personal commitment to the safety and well-being of Israel.”

Heading home to Alaska to prepare for her interview with Charlie Gibson, Palin was escorted by Randy Scheunemann, McCain’s foreign policy guru and, until March, a hired agent of the Tbilisi regime.

Scheunemann’s lobbying assignment: Bring Georgia into NATO, so U.S. troops, like 19-year-old Track Palin, will be required to fight Russia to defend a Saakashvili regime that has paid Randy and his partner $730,000.

Reportedly, a phone conversation was held between Saakashvili and Palin, in which Palin committed herself to the territorial integrity of Georgia, though South Ossetia and Abkhazia have declared independence and been recognized by Moscow, which now has troops in both.

Also on Palin’s plane was Steve Biegun, formerly of Bush’s National Security Council, and Scheunemann’s choice to tutor her. Of Biegun, Steven Clemens of the New American Foundation says, “He will turn her into an advocate of Cheney-ism and Cheney’s view of national security issues.”

During her interview with Gibson, Palin often took a neocon line. Three times she said that, should Israel decide to attack Iran, the United States should not “second guess” Israel’s decision or interfere.

This contradicts U.S. policy. Adm. Michael Mullen, chairman of the joint chiefs, has warned Israel not to attack Iran, as the United States does not want a “third front.” And the Pentagon is withholding crucial weapons the Israelis want and need to carry out any such attack.

One ex-White House aide at American Enterprise Institute, asked by Tim Shipman of the Daily Telegraph if AEI sees Palin as a “project,” replied: “Your word, not mine. ... But I wouldn’t disagree with the sentiment. ... She’s bright, and she’s a blank page. She’s going places, and it’s worth going there with her.”

In fairness to Palin, on issues like NATO membership for Ukraine and Georgia, her answers reflect the views of the man who chose her. She has no option at present but to follow the line laid down by Scheunemann.

But make no mistake. Sarah Palin is no neocon. She did not come by her beliefs by studying Leo Strauss. She is a traditionalist whose values are those of family, faith, community and country, not some utopian ideology.

Wasilla, Alaska, is not a natural habitat of neoconservatives.

Palin may disappoint many conservatives in the next seven weeks by having to parrot the McCain-neocon line on NATO expansion, NAFTA and a “path to citizenship” for illegal aliens. But the battle for Sarah’s soul is not over.

For, again, the lady is no neocon. Nor is the husband Todd, First Dude of Alaska and former member of the “Alaska First” Independence Party."

Should Sarah Palin have been selected for the Vice-President position? She is just AIPAC-neocons project! No!

The best person for the job would have been Dr. Condi Rice. Do you mind that she is black and smart?

Palin gets Neocons education: said Patrick Buchanan.

Obama WILL be cancer for the economy...this is an ECONOMIC CERTAINTY!!! He says that most businesses will not be affected, but the one that produce 85% of the jobs in that sector ASBOLUTELY WILL!! Corporations won't just absorb the losses due to Obama's Robin Hood policies, they will pass it one to consumers, move overseas, and cut jobs. Economic Certainty.
Small business will retract, and cuts jobs...or fold. Economic Certainty.
There is no question. Do people who vote for Obama plan not to work? I guess not!!!

Gosh, I was watching T.V. the other day and watched Former President CLinton admit that it was the Democrats who were responsible for the Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac debacle. Isn't he a Democrat? Aren't Barney, Chris, and Nancy Democrats? Aren't they the ones who wanted the No Income, No job, No problem loans to be given out or the banks would be fined? Wasn't it Mr. Clinton way back in 1995 that started the old affirmative action loan program which had its start back with Jimmy Earl Carter, the man who can't even run a peanut farm? I see there might be a major thread running through this whole mess.

I cannot understand why anyone would listen to a slick talking, smooth talking lawyer to begin with. Obama scares me to death. Are you libs out there not aware that when Michelle went on "The View" that she went with a list of "taboo topics" while Cindy McCain went on with none? It's because the McCains have nothing to hide. The Obama's are not being forthright, or candid. What's wrong with you people that you cannot see that? I wouldn't vote for Obama simply because of his association with that hate filled racist America hater minister he listened to for 20 years. Are you blind that you cannot see the real Obama behind this cool/calm facade?
He quit going to the church simply because it hurt him politically. The preacher’s beliefs are Obama's beliefs. Now there is this other evidence of his associations. Then Acorn. Pretty scary.
I’m not a big McCain fan either, but I do see him as honest and trustworthy. Obama? Not so.
