McCain still pushing Ayers tie

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor October 8, 2008 12:36 PM

John McCain didn't mention William Ayers during the second of three presidential debates.

But that doesn't mean his campaign is done with trying to link Barack Obama to Ayers, who helped start a radical group responsible for a series of bombings of government buildings during the early 1970s.

Today, McCain's camp issued a statement from John M. Murtagh, the son of one of the bombings' targets. His father was a New York judge presiding over the trial of members of the Black Panther Party in a plot to bomb New York landmarks and department stores. On Feb. 21, 1970, three gasoline-filled firebombs exploded at the Murtagh home.

“When I was 9 years-old the Weather Underground, the terrorist group founded by Barack Obama’s friend William Ayers, firebombed my house. Barack Obama has dismissed concerns about his relationship with Ayers by noting that he was only a child when Ayers was planting bombs at the Pentagon and the U.S. Capitol. But Ayers has never apologized for his crimes, he has reveled in them, expressing regret only for the fact that he didn’t do more.

“While Barack Obama once downplayed his relationship with Ayers, today his campaign took that deceit one step further. Barack Obama now denies he was even aware of his friend’s violent past when, in 1995, Ayers hosted a party launching Obama’s political career. Given Ayers’ celebrity status among the left, it’s difficult to believe. The question remains: what did Obama know, and when did he know it? When did Obama learn the truth about his friend? Barack Obama helped Ayers promote his book in 1997, served on charitable boards with him through 2002, and regularly exchanged emails and phone calls with him through 2005. At what point did Barack Obama discover that his friend was an unrepentant terrorist? And if he is so repulsed by the acts of terror committed by William Ayers, why did the relationship continue? Any honest accounting by Barack Obama will necessarily cast further doubt on his judgment and his fitness to serve as commander in chief.

“Barack Obama may have been a child when William Ayers was plotting attacks against U.S. targets — but I was one of those targets. Barack Obama’s friend tried to kill my family.”

It's amazing Americans don't mind bombing other countries

So now John M. Murtagh is allowing the tragedy that happened to his family to be a political tool. Shame on John Murtagh. Obama did not help plan the attack when Obama was eight years old.
What about Ayes employers over the past 35 years- Why not go after them? Aren't they just as guilty as Obama of the bombings. What about Ayers students who sat in his classes and made it possible for Ayers to earn a living- are they also guilty. What about the government that let Ayers free and off the hook. Isn't the entire government guilty. This can get real stupid.
P.S. do you know that Palin talks about patriotism and her husband was part of a group promoting Alaska's independence from the U.S.

McCain wants to gagot White House by lieing! Try lieing to ascend - a road to white house! I don't think it will work this time.

Economy is sinking, what that 'white wrinkly dude' thinking? And that MILF, faboulus Palin! This kind of populist politics is bad for us, we have seen that movie - Bush Doctrine!

Never again, no McCain!

If John McCain wants bipartisanship, he should stop trashing our next president and start examining how he can contribute to the policies for a more economically stable America. His views may be valuable under the new administration, but they won't be listened to if he continues with this drivel.

What a complete load of nonsense. Is guilt by association an American law now?
How about we dig up every person McCain shook hands with over the last 40 years and make their actions his fault .

COUld you get your facts right. AYers never hosted a party for Obama. THere is no reason to believe that Obama ever heard of the Weathermen (like most americans)....as they existied for a brief time period during the late 1960s as a faction of a youth group called SDS (also an entity of which most people have never heard)

WEll, yes, and while the media wants to destroy their credibility to cover up this relationship and the actions of Ayers to help Obama, they are covering up much more and matters of national security.

Why did Obama have such a close relationship with this man? A man who is sorry he didn't do more bombings? - by him AND HIS WIFE? That doesn't make them nervous? Especially when they see what they were doing? Taking another tact to radical organizing, that Obama engaged in and promoted with handing out money for those efforts. Strong arm tactics and inimidation. Thug style Chicago politics that found no means too extreme, even resulting in death if their END was achieved.

They both attended Columbia at the same time, living 2 blocks away and miraculously Obama decides to make a move to Chicago to continue the organizing he was doing in Columbia. Not San Francisco, Not Hwawii, not Kansas, not Washington, No Chicago where Ayers lives. And then they form a long relationship, personally and professionally.

Our supposed journalists who are not reporting this very necessary information shoud all lose their jobs. And I will not feel sorry for the media falling under after they way they have conducted themselves this year.

And they can't skimper away and blame the people for not asking to cover it.

Even if BO knew about Ayer's background, so what? Ayers long rehabilitated himself before Obama entered Chicago's political scene. He has worked with Republicans & Demomcrats and is a respected professor. His background remained a non-issue for many years. Only now that McCain is running out of ammunition and he sees his miserable campaign circling around the drain it has become a convenient little "scandal". Give me a break.

You can keep reciting the line "Obama what 8 when Ayers did these things" all you want. The fact is, that in 2001, Ayers said that he didn't regret doing it and he wished they'd done more. I've seen countless Obama supports asked if they themselves would associate with Ayers in the same manner that Obama has, and they dodge the question every time. Because the answer to that question, for every proud American, Democrat or Republican, is NO. Why do you not expect our next president to share your moral judgement? Why would you support someone who only judges his associations by how they will help or hurt him politically?

Now, if Ayers was Obama's only radical association, I could see how his supporters could let it slide as a momentary lapse in judgement. But he sat in Wright's church for 20 years. And, if you believe that he didn't hear the things that Wright said, you're an idiot. The guy sold the stuff on DVDs.

Oprah knew to leave that church in 1996. Whether she really didn't agree with Wright or just knew it could hurt her career is anyone's guess. Why is it that the values that guide Oprah are stronger than the values that guide our potential next president? Since when is Oprah's show held to a higher standard than the presidency?

The only thing that guides Obama is political expedience. Even if you believe that he doesn't share Wrights views of America, why would you elect someone who only associates himself with people who can help him politically. That is what this country needs to move away from. We need to elect people that look to their moral compass when making decisions instead of looking to campaign donations.

I could also go on about the many flaws in Obama's policies too, but that's not what this article was about...and even if I did, my words would fall on the deaf ears of people who are only voting based on bad taste George W. Bush has left in thier mouth. I share your sentiment when it comes to Bush, but you need to realize that Bush only had so much to do with our current situation. The legislative branch of our government played a much bigger role in the downfall of the economy, and the downfall didn't start until Democrats gained control of that branch. Everyone knows that democrat intentions are good. It would be great if we could get every low income family into a nice house, and get them great health care. But when the family can't afford that house, or the goverment can't afford great healthcare, the quality of our economy and the quality of our healthcare declines.

All I ask is that you stop and think about what you are voting for. This shouldn't be a choice you make under the assumption that anything other than George Bush is an improvement. Things can get worse. Don't vote your emotions, use your head.

Obama is directly linked to a terror group who stated they will take down the US government from the inside. This same terror group has killed and is still unrepentant.Wake up America.

Why doesn't someone ask McCain about his relationship with G. Gordon Liddy? He's a convicted felon who held fundraisers for McCain and who McCain has claimed is a great man. Don't throw stones, Senator McCain. I am tired of the hypocrisy of McCain.
Hopefully, every voter will take the trouble to find out the facts and not just buy into the stuff McCain and the Reps are selling.

So now the victim of the fire bombing has become an expert on who is and is not a friend of Obama's. If Obama can find another victim of the bombing that says that Ayers is not a friend of Obama will that change anythin?. The bombing was awful and Obama had nothing to do with it before or afterwards. When Obama met him Ayers was a respected member of the community. If there is an issue here it is with the University that hired Ayers and gave him that legitimacy.

John McCain, talking about this for so long shows a lack of judgement.

AJ, you're absolutely right that things can get worse. I'm sure McCain can manage to drag the country down even further. Or worse than that, Palin could end up as president. If that happened we'd be praying for Bush to come out of retirement. I find it absoutely hilarious for someone to say 'Don't vote your emotions, use your head.' and advocate voting for Palin's ticket. Funny, but sad and scary at the same time.

Myra Jost,

You need to get your facts straight. It is a matter of record that Senator Obama's political career was launched at Ayer's house and unless you lived in another planet most people knew about his past especially in Chicago. Also, as late as 9/11 Mr. Ayers bragged about not doing enough (more bombings).

People who live in glass houses should not throw stones Senator McCain. Not only were you an actual accomplice of convicted felon Charles Keating, but you apparently are associated with Oleg Deripaska, a Russian fellow of dubious character, Marc Rich, the American billionaire, and A-list con man Raffaello Follieri... who recently admitted to misappropriating at least $2.4 million of investor money and redirecting it to foreign personal bank accounts that were disguised as business accounts.

Wright said a lot of crazy things, but there's no denying we bombed Nagasaki and Hiroshima and killed a half million Japanese in the process. Our unwarranted invasion of Iraq has resulted in a civil war that has claimed the lives of roughly 150,000 Iraqi non-combatants. We didn't belong in Vietnam either and how many civilians died because we insisted on trying to force democracy on a country in civil war. I don't agree with everything he said, but his point was that its understandable that many countries around the world, people are fed up with America's heavy-handed approach of using our military to force-feed our style of liberty and democracy.

It is widely understood that when Ayers said he "wish we'd done more" he was referring to the American people having done more to stand up against the war.

Governor Palin's husband was part of a movement for Alaska's separation from the United States. The founder of the movement, Joe Vogler, deeply despised the US. He is quoted as saying, "The fires of hell are frozen glaciers compared to my hatred for the American government. And I won't be buried under their damn flag."

Come on, it was the early 70s. Think back folks, how many of us trusted the government then? The Vietnam War was unpopular, Nixon was unpopular. All sorts of fringe groups popped up. I hardly think this Ayers fella was any different than many of the disenfranchised youth of the early 70s.

Oh, but I forgot, we're not supposed to talk about the past.

Guilt by association ? Yes! Who we choose to spend time with, support andgive money to, those we choose as our religious leaders and the person we chose to marry obviously echo something in ourslves and have a great influence over us. All these people in Obama's case do not admire or like America . Can anyone believe that Obama choses to spend time with people who think differently from him on such a fundemantal point?
McCain is not my first choice but at least he loves his country which is rather important if you intend to lead it!

Well, it looks like Ayers thinks he has a close relationship with Obama and he's hoping to make money off of that.

yes, folks, only a terrorist like Ayers being so happy with his 70's actions and bombings, knowing he's too old to do them again, wants to make money off of it by writing a script and having it made in to a movie. And he is hoping the suckers, I mean Obama koolaid drinkers Obama has taught to GET IN THEIR FACE, ARGUE WITH THEM, SAY ANYTHING, BE MY AMBASSADORS, will want to see his lifes work.

Yep, will Barry Soetoro Obama promote his movie like he did Ayers book.

Of course you Obamabots want McCain to stop talking about this. If I had such a close and working relationsip to funnel money to programs for radical organizing, and a personal friendhsip who launched my "coming out" party (No not that coming out-he's still in on that one) for my political career, I would want them to stop talking about him too.

But I would never have such poor judgement to have such a long relationship with a person like this. While also signing a contract to be a member of the Socialist Party of Chicago the following year.

Stick a fork in Obama. He's is done.

Oh, no, not Linda, again.

Actually, the more Palin/McCain talk about Ayers, the more digusted voters become with Palin/McCain, because they have totally forgetten we're in a financial crisis and our economy is in the toilet. Go ahead, keep bringing up the past. The rest of us want to move forward.

I wish people would realize that President Bush did not create this mess all by himself and if Obama or McCain is elected president they won't fix it by themselves either! Until our elected officials start working together and putting the American People first this country will continue to go downhill!

McCain would not be my first choice either, but I believe we ought to choose a President that is as close to the morals and foundational beliefs our forefather's had for this country as possible and I firmly believe Barack Hussen Obama is not it.

Has anybody really wondered why he changed his name from Barry Soetoro Obama to Barack Hussen Obama???

I'm appalled by people on this blog. It doesn't bother you that the potential next leader of your country associates himself with someone who bombed our own country, yet claims to fight hard against terrorism???? How about the fact that he sat in a church for over 20 years listening to a man Damn this country and other radical statements? How about his association with ACORN, Plfeger, the list goes on....don't you think it's time you take a look at who Obama really is and what he stands for? I myself pay very close attention to the people I associate with and I assure you, I wouldn't be having dinner at the house of someone who not only bombed my Country, but just recently said he didn't do enough and had no remorse.

If you don't find that appalling, then you all need some serious help. pathetic.

Barack's association with Ayers and his long time association with Rev Wright brings his character into question. It is almost November 4th and many people are hooked on Obama's smooth delivery of his speeches. There is definitely a pattern here. With Wright , at first Obama did not hear Wright's speeches. With Ayer he didn't know he was a domestic terrorist. Does that mean he does not know history of the turbulent 60's in America? He should come clean and say he is sorry for his association, and renounce and reject Ayers. I am worried about his judgment. Why has he been so naive? Is he ready to take on the burdens we face?
