Mea culpas on pro-American remarks
Republicans are in mea culpa mode today after comments in North Carolina suggesting that their supporters are more patriotic and American than Democrats.
At a fund-raiser in the Tar Heel state last week, vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin said, "We believe that the best of America is in these small towns that we get to visit, and in these wonderful little pockets of what I call the real America, being here with all of you hard-working, very patriotic, um, very, um, pro-America areas of this great nation."
Today on CNN, Palin said she didn't mean to say some parts of the country are more pro-American than others. "I don't want that misunderstood," Palin said. "If that's the way it came across, I apologize."
Also today, a Republican congressman apologized for comments he made introducing John McCain at a rally in Concord, N.C., on Saturday. "Liberals hate real Americans that work and accomplish and achieve and believe in God," Robin Hayes told the crowd.
Hayes said in a prepared statement today: "I genuinely did not recall making the statement and, after reading it, there is no doubt that it came out completely the wrong way."

I like the Republican Party even though I'm not a member but because of their fair treatment of women it means a lot to me.I love my mother and my sisters as well as my wife and my daughter and they are the women in my life that I learned about respect for women.John Mccain really solidify my support for him when he chose Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate and it also proove to me that John Mccain cares much for all American and women issues. If there's ever a candidate that makes women and issues matter most to them very important in this election there's no doubt that candidate is John Mccain. The choosing of Sarah Palin was a testimony of the of the type of character we need from a President that will lead this nation forward. Hilliary Clinton almost make it there if it wouldn't for the leftist media.
Well if that's not how she meant to come across, then, a clarification would be nice. What did she mean? Is this article leaving this out or is this all she said? If this is all she said, then, she is probably being disengious in her apology an her apology is worthless
.
And this person who cannot phrase ideas with words in English wants to sit at a table with world leaders? And respond to questions? Oh, please, we are in deep trouble if she occupies any square footage of the White House.

Rich, you're being way too kind. she is totally disingenuous in every way; her apology, along with pretty much everything else that comes out of her mouth, is worthless!!!!
Silly Sarah....stringing all those vowels and consonants together to form words that make up sentences in order to make a point just doesn't make sense to her and she's sorry if she came across as a divisive demagugue.
On Nov 4 she gets a one-way ticket back to Alaska
I just laugh every time one of these Repubs gets caught behaving badly, in public. Every time one of theme talks, more money is donated to their opponent. Keep it up!
I have a feeling Palin is going to get a cool reception when she returns home to the frozen tundra of Wasilla. The townspeople have seen a side of Ms. Palin that didn't exist before this election. Have fun, Palin, at the strip mall in Wasilla.....I hope they name it after you!
skmj, come on let's face it, you are a plant. Come on. Any bright person will know that McCain's choice of VP was nothing but a calculated, cheap, disrespectfull ploy. Tell me anything else but that he respect's women.
There's a really smart candidate out there who keeps saying "Don't boo, just vote." In this case, don't complain, just donate. We just raised $800,000 for Michele Bachmann's opponent after her very hateful remarks on Hardball last week. Send a message to Hayes' opponent today. Donate to Larry Kissell NOW!
But what about what comes out of the other vice presidential candidates mouth? Oh, he's a democrat and on the ticket with Obama so what he says goes with impunity and is never considered newsworthy by the MSM
I disliked Palin before the comment, but now I LOATHE her. She went way too far with that comment. How dare she accuse anyone of being more or less American, more or less Patriotic, more or less Pro-America. How could she know how I feel about America one way or the other? She is causing a rift in the American psyche that will not be easy to heal. When did "Small Town America" become the moral barometer for this nation? What gives her the right to say that it is?
Guess what, Sarah, I am Pro-America, I am patriotic, and I am a real American. I pay my taxes, I vote, I am raising a family. In fact, I donate every third tax refund I get back to the government as my way of saying thanks, my way of helping pay for this wonderful country we live in. How many of your supporters can say the same?
Thank god the 9/11 terrorists hit New York City, and didn't kill any "real" Americans.
skmj, did it ever occur to you that mccain's choice of palin could very well be sexist, that he is just using her gender and beauty-queen appeal, with complete disregard for the country should he expire before his term, in order to gain votes?
rich, please allow me to clarify. ethno-centric, xenophobic, rural areas where people own more guns than books...
if mccain gets elected be prepared for the "2 minute hate".
She apologized but did not explain what she meant by those comments. A complete apology should include what she was trying to say so we can understand
No need to apologize. The more and more liberal Democrat Party in America tends to have within its ranks many folks who would blame America first and do not particularly like what America stands for. This is simply from observation, not a judgement.
And one more time my friends, Palin is more experienced than that empty-suit Obama. 143 Days in the Senate then runs for President. What? I'll take McCain for President. When is the Globe doing its investigative piece on Obama? Oh, that's right, wouldn't be good for Obama. Sorry, my bad.
If anyone wants to help us get Robin Hayes out of office, go to www.larrykissell.com We must get him (yes, Hayes is a male) out of office!
I love how people like John Stewart flip their lids over this remark. Calm down kids and think what she said through, and the circumstances she said it in. Once again Liberals who know nothing about how this government works attack the slightest things they cannot comprehend by their lack of evaluation in an effort to show the world they mean bizniz.

"skmj", while it is notable for the Republican party to have named a woman to the Presidential ticket, I think you'd be hard-pressed to find strong examples of the party promoting women on the whole. Someone like Sen. Elizabeth Dole scrapped and earned her clout and position over time, but McCain choosing Gov. Palin out of obscurity was a cynical stunt directed by demographics, not a thoughtful decision to select someone he really believed in. (ie: Joe Leiberman or Tom Ridge)
John McCain came home from Vietnam to a devoted wife who'd waited for him for years--and divorced her. How does that square with his "respect for women"? Or compare with Barack Obama's obvious devotion to his wife Michelle and his two daughters? It's fine to support John McCain--but facts are facts. Secondly, this idea I see out there now that Hilary Clinton lost to Barack Obama because of a media conspiracy, and not because millions of voters in dozens of states just prefered the candidate who was against a criminal war is an insult to millions of American voters, isn't it? What's more, it's patronizing to Senator Clinton, one of the brightest politicians and legistators we have. Why patronize or coddle her like some delicate flower?
Heck with the apology, I'll go one better anyone voting for NoBahama is a anti american anti patriot, biggoted, socialist brain dead fool and should be forced to move to Chavez country.
skmj are you out of your mind or were you kidding? Choosing the unqualified Palin for a running mate because she is a woman is as insulting as NOT choosing a qualified running mate because she is a woman. It's as if McCain and his staff were thinking "hey this woman-thing seemed to excite the dems and undecideds so any broad will do, and heck she's good for bringing in the ultra-conservative religious right." The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act failed to pass in the senate this year. It was a piece of legislation that was packaged as equal pay for equal work but really it sought to protect a worker's right to bring suit against an employer for any discriminatory compensation practices, including gender, race, age etc. in reponse to a Supreme Court decision in which the court very narrowly defined some key aspects of discrimation suits in favor of corporations and against precedent. In any case, McCain didn't vote on the act but said that he would have voted NO because women don't need legal protection from corporate discrimination, they need "more training and education." How sexist and out of touch is that statement? 53% of all college graduates are women...but we just need to work harder to ensure that we get paid the same as a man who does the same job. Do you still think he supports women?
I don’t see what fuss is all about. Republicans want everyone to think they are the God fearing, patriotic party, and everyone else is going to Hades! Why are they apologizing?
Republicans are the damned traitors - they manipulated the tax codes, built up the deficit, started a phony war In Iraq, and then put in a President who has done MORE damage than any terrorist could ever dream of ever doing to this country.
Let's cut to the chase, if we have another Republican President there won't be enough of this country left to save. Our economy if completely in the toilet, we have two wars that are looking less and less likely to trun out well (and are bankrupting us), we just handed out another trillion dollars for this rescue package and there is talk of more. This is on top of a 10 trillion dollar national debt. World opinion of America is at an all time low, partly because the rest of the world can't even begin to understand how we could have elected Bush, twice, or how we could even consider Palin , even in a joke. This has to end. We need a real change, not just new faces but the same old policies.
skmj, interesting you say that since John McCain has a history of voting against equal rights for women.
Palin is the biggest joke of a VP canidate in US history
