Michelle Obama makes pitch

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor October 25, 2008 05:00 AM

Barack Obama -- returning to the campaign trail today with events in Nevada and New Mexico after spending time with his ailing grandmother -- deputized his wife to give the weekly Democratic radio address.

Michelle Obama emphasizes her personal story and her family, particularly daughters Malia and Sasha, and appeals to voters on that basis.

"For me, the issues the heart of this election aren’t just political, they’re personal," she says. "I know they are for you, too.

"Maybe you’re a student who wonders if you’ll be able to pay off your loans or find a good job after you graduate. Maybe you’re a small business owner unsure of whether you can pay your employees next month. Maybe you’re a mother who puts off taking your child to the doctor because you can’t afford the co-pay. So we all have a choice to make. And when you look at the issues, and the candidates, and their plans for our future -- the choice is clear," she continues.

"There’s only one candidate in this race who can bring about the change we need, restore our economy, and rebuild our middle class. That candidate is Barack Obama."

She then turns her pitch to making sure Obama's supporters actually cast ballots to seal the deal.

"In 2004, 16 million Americans who could have voted didn’t," she says. "Yet, the election was decided by just 59,000 votes in Ohio. This time, we can’t wake up November 5th only to discover we fell just short and didn’t elect Barack Obama and Joe Biden. We can’t look back and think about what might have been.

"So visit your neighbors," she urges. "Listen to their concerns. Tell them what’s at stake. Then take them with you to vote....If you do, we will win this election. We’ll put Barack Obama in the White House. And we will change this country and fulfill the hopes of all those like my father, who work so hard to give their children a better future and guarantee that the American Dream endures."

why didn't michelle O and the children accompany Barak O to see his grandmother on her deathbed? Seems unsupportive to this grandmother!
One reason I did NOT vote for him ( here in Oregon we have already voted..... by mail ) . He only talks about the poor, the uninsured, the down and out-ers, the homeless and people who earn $250,000 or more and I don't fit into any of his categories.......He has over looked so many of us in this country. I think his narrow views of the population are sad and I am worried I will be in the worse shape ever if he is elected! Sen. McCain at least KNOWS who the majority of American citizens are. We will be much better off.

Election Day Crying...A whirlwind, bailout running, Down Jones falling shrieking. Foreclosures getting worse. President candidates are playing their political games. Temperament. On changes as paranoia. The other keeps underdog, silent moving forward. He sings a song. Worship the Sun, the light shinning of the Lord, I am the under dog in the roof of the Lord. Lift up my mind, in my prayer place,He gets my words. Bless my Lord.
The underdog keeps running and singing. Come bless the Lord, All ye servants of the Lord, who stand by night in the house of the Lord. Lift up your hands and bless the Lord, and bless the Lord. Servant of the Lord.

Blondshag...how tragically ignorant your comments are. The repeated use of Obama's middle name makes about as much sense as emphasizing JOHN McCain - as in JOHN Wilkes Booth. It's a name, you sad and silly creature. I strongly urge you to read something beyond the level of the National Inquirer or the latest Fox News headlines (how they revealed their incompetence with the recent bleating of the so-called "attack victim" Ashley Todd - and how revoltingly the McCain camp once again demonstrated its devotion to the "politics of hatred").

Amen Alex. I am from Arizona and I will not be supporting John McCain. I have listened to his double talk for years. He is a constant flip flopper who switches his views while trying to paint himself as "The Maverick." FYI, constant flip flopping does not qualify one as a maverick, just a professional politician.

Fact. Long before he attacked Senator Obama for suggesting having a dialogue with countries we are at odds with, Senator McCain met with the dictator Augusto Pinochet WITHOUT PRECONDITIONS. Hypocrite! Fact. McCain is "proud" to call domestic terrorist G. Gordon Liddy a friend. OK, so because Gordo has a right-wing radio show and supports McCain we ignore his involvement as the mastermind in the Watergate scandal? I think not. Hypocrite.

John McCain used to be a REAL maverick who was willing to take on his own party when they were wrong. He was opposed to torture (having been a victim of it himself). But little by little, he changed into a tool of Karl Rove and the Republican machine, and now he's OK with torture. Very sad.

Come back, Senator McCain! Come back and continue to raise hell in the Senate like you used to. In the meantime, I'm voting for Barack Obama for President.

I for one will be very pleased to have the Obamas in the White house as first family, they have demonstrated not only love for country, but love and care for each other and their children.

looking forward to working hard with them to make this country great again.

Wow! I'm amazed by the pungent strength of the replies to this minor,
nothing article. First, Blondshag's bizarre "A TERRORIST BUDDIES" rant,
which is so special I've saved it in a file for posterity. I
particularly was taken by his novel use of doubling double-quotes to add
extra emphasis.

But then, the stream of consciousness poetry about, uh..., Underdog in
the House of the Lord, takes this discourse to a new level. I'm
guessing it was an attempt at support for McCain, but it only makes me
wonder why there aren't more mentally ill people supporting Obama.

I wish there was a way to say this without sounding insulting to people
with mental problems, but McCain seems to have more than his fair share
of unstable supporters. Is it just that fewer rational people are
speaking up for McCain, so the irrational ones get the floor? Where are
the Obama supporters fanatic enough to carve a backwards J in their own
face and claim it was done by an eldery white man?

can't agree more with Alex. as an outsider (i'm a HK Chinese) i can only say i'm really jealous of you Americans that here's such a high quality and mature man as the Presidential Candidate. but if the US turns out to have another George W. Bush-kind of stupid "leader", that only reflects the poor standard of many Americans who voted for him; and that these Americans DESERVE NOT to have a great President.

why cannot people make up their minds by readings books and looking at history. i have read both mens biographies and looked at their history.

turn off the talk radio and TV and make up your own minds. the media is is business to make money to educate people on facts.

I was reading facts in 1989 when McCain was under review as one of the "Keating 5" he took 112 thousands in contributions and numorous holidays on his private jet to Keating resorts. Thats a bit diffferent than serving on board for poor peoples housing with someone with a shaking past. Wake up!

We are so lucky to have Obama and he will win thank God

Michelle is fabulous. What sold me on her immediately from the start was her revereance and devotion to her children. She'll learn fast.....she has the best interests of the country in mind. A wonderful image for America, we owe this election to our African American citizens.....their time is now. But, I will vote as I always do from my own convictions.

For years and years the Republican Party and its water-carriers have demonized anyone who does not agree with their world view. Democrats are the ENEMY. And so we are left with people like Blondshag who vomit the same hatred. There is no room in their world for change and hope. There is only room for hatred. I am so afraid for my country.

The McCain campaign is trying to fool people into associating Obama's name with the words. "terrorist" and, lately "socialist". There is not a grain of truth to either accusation. The effort shows that the McCain campaign is clueless as to positive ideas and is desperately trying to win by spreading fear and capitalizing on the emotions of people who do not look behind the words.

As for Michelle Obama, she radiates intelligence, beauty, warmth, compassion, and humour.

Ironic to read a lot of these comments on "Political Intelligence."
By the way, all muslims are not terrorists. Just like all Christians are not Fred Phelps. I am constantly amazed by how prevalent the anti-muslim ignorance and hatred is in America. No, Barack Obama is not a Muslim. But even if he were, that would not make him a terrorist.

Many of you right wing bloggers talking about "Socialism" really need to pay attention. Bush gave us the biggest expansion of government in US history. Bush gave us the biggest deficit in US history. Bush gave us the biggest loss of civil liberties in US history. Bush is nationalizing US banks. A communist move.

And while McCain is not physically Bush, they are two separate people, they are not much different. Indeed McCain is more of the same, only more so. Its obvious to me that you all wouldn't know a socialist if he were slapping you in the face.

The right wing commentary will just get more and more ideological and indeed hysterical. It will continue to try to paint Obama what he is not. It will continue to try to destroy his character. That is their only hope. It is not going to work.

To those who spouting Socialist. Well, if Obama is a socialist, then McCain and Bush are bush-wacking Pirates, dressed in business suits. In league with those running some of the the large businesses these days with "golden parachutes", with special note of the oil companies, car companies and the investment banks. All of them crying "deregulation, deregulation", "self regulation, self regulation", "limits to liability", "limits to liability", etc....

The American people are starting to tune out the Republican Party. And rightly so. I think the reason is obvoius - America as a Nation trumps the Republican Party. Many are starting to see through the Republican facade. William Buckley Jr. gets it, Colin Powell really gets it, but the Party Leaders and demagogues do not - especially people like Rush, Bush, Bachmann and and de Rothschild. The Party is so imbued in its own Propaganda, in its own sense of Superiority and Self Righteousness, that it has indeed lost its way.

The Party has something of a Maoist sentiment of being the ruling Party and the Ruling Class. In spite of the dissent of most of the Nation. Real Republicans need to seize the levers of the Party, tear it down and rebuild from the grass roots up. Its ownership is too centered in selfish ideological hands and its philosophy has gone Piratical; way too right wing. I think it is way out of the mainstream. For so long it has been there, and held its ground by moving the mainstream and demonizing the left. No more.

I believe that Republicans do not have a lock on conservatism - indeed, Obama is a true pragmatist and he knows that you need to be fiscally conservative to be more socially liberal. Otherwise it does not add up. He is not really a liberal. Obama and the Democrats also understand you can't let the Foxes run the Hen Houses, and certainly not under self policing policies. And certainly not with limits on liability if they eat all the Hens and can't replace them when caught.

Republicans today do not understand the concept of collective. This is mostly because they are the ones that are benefiting from the Caveman's survival of the fittest ideas and the "ownership" society. They have the money and the power and they view and work politics to maintain it. They feel entitled and they pay lip service to social policies while generally demonizing them as being something unAmerican. When, indeed America needs to shift away from the extreme right wing to a more common sense approach.

Republican Party leaders and their rich backers want to keep giving the mainstream masses a wind up toy. A Bush, a Palin, a McCain or any Barbie or Ken will do. Just dress 'em up and get 'em talkin' just like ole "Joe Six Pack" and "Joe the Plumber" whoever that is. Its sure not you or me. Let them think their leaders are just like you. This has kept the masses happy, while Republicans and cronies eat the Hens.

Of course, when the Hens are noticed missing, it will be someone else' fault. Probably the Democrats somehow, it does not matter how, or someone in Iraq. No wait, it might be Putin, or possibly its Castro, no wait he's almost dead, okay then, Chavez ...... Or maybe that Muslim Arab Socialist African Malaysian Hawaiian and UnAmerican Obama...... And so the tomfoolery goes........

Liberals are not socialists. The latter is a word sullied by dictators and megalomaniacs. Theirs' is a false concept of socialism, used for selfish gain and to keep the masses poor and in chains. As McCain has said - strong backs, or the backbone of America is that American laborer. A back strong enough to carry the malarkey called Republican Conservatism or, I think, Piratical Conservative is more fitting.

There is no stronger Nation than one with a well run economic engine. One that is fairly and sensibly regulated. One that shares the wealth equitably. One that is built on morally sound incentive systems for its operators. One with a collective advancement and support system for all its members.

Republicans as much or more than any others will tell you that you don't send into battle men without protection and weapons. You don't send men that are unskilled and untrained in the use of weapons. You don't win battles by leaving your compatriots unprotected. And you don't leave the weak and wounded behind. Their rescue is the mark of heroes. If its heroic in the battlefields of war, why not so in the battlefields of life?

America is indeed headed for a brighter future with Obama than with McCain.

Kay says Michelle Obama's address is "Another warning sign of what is coming if they get elected." Well, based on Obama's address, I guess that will be a return to politicians who actually care about the economy, health care and small business owners. It sounds like a return to a democracy where citizens are actually called to participate so that we remain a nation OF the people, BY the people and FOR the people. It sounds like a return to national discourse at a higher level than the "smoke 'em out" cowboy jargon we have come to expect.

I don't know about Kay, but personally, I can't wait!

The "politics of hatred" is so rampant this election that it's a disgrace to America! Tell me why you support your candidate and I will listen to you. Disparage and lie about the candidate you are not supporting, and you will never convince me to agree with you, let alone vote with you.
The reasons I LIKE Michelle Obama? She's personable, intelligent, and caring; has a good sense of humor and a strong social conscience. I also admire the fact that she's a Christian, and a good mother. Lastly, she's proud of her working class roots, as am I.
The reasons I will VOTE for her husband? His position on the war and bringing our troops home, his plans to restore America's standing in the world through diplomacy, his plans to put tax policies in place that benefit the middle class while only asking the upper class to return to the status quo of the first Bush and Clinton years, his health care plan, to name a few reasons. He has demonstrated over and over again that he can remain calm in a crisis, dignified in the face of relentless and unwarranted attacks on his character and capable not only of bringing disparate points of view together, but of understanding them!! His quick and agile mind, his compassionate nature and his sense of humor will make him an excellent president should America be smart enough to put him in power.

What really scares me is the fact that we could have Ms Palin in the second office and ths lady is in my mind the real ambitious and unconcentious person in the ticket. Second she is really ignorant and her husband is for the separation of Alaska from the Union. Her children are fearing no better under her guidance, her son is a high school drop out, her minor daughter is pregnant and hardly goes to school. In the last picture of her debate when the family is in the stage, the father gives the baby to the youngest girl to hold , she is barely a baby. Mr McCain is no better, just the fact that he was a partisan republican in the senate voring for Bush. sh
