Most coverage of McCain negative, study finds

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor October 22, 2008 03:24 PM

Depending on one's political leanings, the latest study of media coverage of the presidential race could offer more evidence that the press is in the tank for Barack Obama -- or proof that everybody loves a winner, or least the leader in the polls.

The Project for Excellence in Journalism said today that since the national party conventions, the coverage has "not so much cast Barack Obama in a favorable light as it has portrayed John McCain in a substantially negative one."

Its study found that while the extent of coverage has evened out over the past six weeks, from decidedly in Obama's favor, its tone has tilted further to the Democratic nominee.

Of the stories about Obama, 36 percent have been mostly positive, 35 percent mixed, and 29 percent negative, the study said.

Of the coverage of McCain, only 14 percent was generally positive, while 29 percent was mixed, and 57 percent was negative.

McCain and his running mate Sarah Palin have been railing against the liberal media, always an applause line at rallies.

Perhaps the RNC is finally getting the "Objective Reporting" the Campaign deserves, since the McCain - Palin cult is now so seriously out-of-step with Mainstream America, that only the obscenely rich & ditto-headed bigots find comfort in the slanderous distortions they're spewing whenever a mic is pointed at either candidate...

How else is the media supposed to report on terrorism, anti-Americanism, socialism and communism and all the other "isms" charged by the Repubs?

If McCain and his campaign is championing negativity, then what is the media suppose to report? Who is The Project for Excellence in Journalism? Would be interested to know who makes up this group.

Is it too obvious to state that negative coverage comes from negative events, statements, stories, and mistakes? When a campaign screws up, they get negative coverage, right? Does anybody truly believe that McCain has not been screwing up more, lots more than the Obama campaign? From chasing hurricanes and financial crashes to practicing personality politics- (he's from the other party, so he's Un-American). Give me a break. Do or say something positive and when its reported it will be .....uh duh, positive coverage.

McCain and Palin deserve the negative coverage simply because they both showcase negativity and arrogance while lying to their audiences. And particularly Palin is embarissing this nation with her daily nonsenses.
Most mass media are quite soft with all that, failing the Americans.

Spreading the wealth to Sarah Palin $150,000 to dress her and her family. You would have been better served in hiring someone to tutor her on the constitution

Well, whoever your anonymous sole is, you are incredibly ignorant this late in the game. I know that any serious and reasonable voter has seen what he needs to support this man. You sir, are just a Republican troll inciting further stupidity. Who is John McCain? I could make up an equally ignorant list too.... But I won't. Why don't you have a look at where these two men stand on the issues that affect this country, and stop the character destruction tactics. It is getting real stale. And in fact, you are way over the line. Just like McCain, cruising down the highways on the "Lying with a Straight Face Express" with Palin as the well dressed Hood Ornament. They are out there, headed off into the sunset on the famous Bridge to Nowhere.,,,,

The negative coverage might be a result of his 100% negative approach to campaigning. Hey, as far as he is concerned, its not about him, its not about Palin and its not about who Obama is either. Its about making Obama into something that people can hate.....

And, this is a stated campaign strategy. Now, how does a reporter find a positive way to report that? Only if you are a heartless, witless, foolish soul could you be positive on that one.....

Obama is spending a great deal of his campaign on the issues on being positive and uplifting. He is not trying to knock the other ticket. Now, he has had to counter McCain's negative ads, negative campaign rhetoric and negative running mate. And, to do this, he at times has had to fight back more aggressively than he has been attacked to send a clear message not to fool with him. Just because he is a positive, uplifting person with a strong vision and great leadership skills, does not mean he is not going to deal with McCain's bully and lying tactics.

So, of the coverage is media, I ask - what do you expect from someone who is doig such despicable things. I can';t wait to see McCain ride off into the sunset on his "Lying with a Straight Face Express", with Palin as the well dressed Hood Ornament. Off over that famous Bridge to Nowhere....

If John McCain and Sarah Palin were more in touch with what is going on
In America they would do a lot better than they are currently doing.
The party stretched their imagination and thought Joe the Plumber represents
The average American. People are out of work with a lot more losing their jobs
Daily. Families are losing their homes at a terrible rate. People are now choosing
to buy food for the family or pay the rent and McCain /Palin are all bent out of
shape about some plumber who already has a job but want to buy a business
that will bring him $250,000 per year.

I would like to hear McCain talk about his own policies (any of them) for ten solid minutes, based solely on their own merit-no catch phrases, no character assassinations, no, "my friends..."

That would get him some positive press, potentially. Or not....

-Tell me more about how deregulating the health insurance industry will lower costs and increase the number of insured-it might work, or it might transform healthcare into the next housing bubble. We won't know, because you don't want to talk about it.
-Tell me more about your plan to buy bad mortgages at face value and sell them at a loss-sounds like a redistribution of weath and big government interference, but it's also compassionate. Care to discuss? I didn't think so.
-If you can convince me that you have a plan which will allow you make good on your promises to make the Bush tax cuts permanent, balance the budget in 4 years, buy all the above mortgages, and win two wars, you have definitely got my vote! But you really haven't...you just tried to scare me about Obama. The problem is, after 9/11, after "WMD," after Nigerian yellowcake uranium, after the housing bubble, and after my 401k melted, I don't scare easily anymore.

I am ,however, still capable of discerning sh*t from Shinola and don't like being taken for a fool.

You have two weeks, and all you need to do is show me that your plan doesn't suck. Instead, you'll spend that time peeing on Obama's pant leg, wondering why no one else thinks its funny.

bho???? saw this same blog numerous times today on other blogs... give it a rest. Obama has been vetted for over 2 years... stop trying to stir up nonsense and stick to the current issues.

And by the way, could it be that McCain is getting more negative coverage because he actually deserves it?

Maybe if McCain was more positive and consistent it would be easier to give him a little more positive courage. He changes his message every other day and comes across as stubborn and hateful. He also likes to remind everyone how old he is everytime he opens his mouth, saying things like" I was there during the cuban missle crisis".Younger voters want something new and fresh not old and crusty.(like me).
Whatever negativity there is originated with McCain,if you'll remember early in the campaign reporters often cames across in a positive way,a lot even commenting on how mmm how much they liked McCain.

It comes as no surprise to me, that these candidates are reported differently, because they haven't been running the same type of campaigns. Simply put: They're NOT equal.

McCain engages in dirty politics, while his VP talks in charge words and race-baiting.

Obama just wants to talk about the issues and how to fix America.

I think #1 is really Michelle Bachmann and she's starting her un-American Activities investigation because she doesn't have any money left to campaign anymore.

Here's an example of "democratic" financial responsibility:

WHO screwed up Social Security??

When Social Security began the "democrats" SAID:

Participation would be VOLUNTARY.

The contributions would be TAX-DEDUCTIBLE.

The funds wouldn't be used for anything ELSE, and

interest would ADD to the account.

The payouts would NEVER BE TAXED.

LBJ & demo majorities in the House and Senate put the

funds in the General Fund so they could use it for

their pet projects (PORK), no interest adds to the

fund now!

CARTER & demo majorities in the House and Senate

gave Social Security to immigrants who had never

PAID IN!

CLINTON & demo majorities in the House and Senate

made the CONTRIBUTIONS taxable, AND made the

PAYOUTS taxable! (Al Gore cast the deciding vote on

the payouts!)

OBAMA wants to GIVE Social Security to the 11 million

ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS that are here, ALONG WITH

Medicare! (Think more or them will come then to get

in on THAT?) AND, with demo majorities in the House

and Senate, he'll SUCCEED!

AND, after all THAT, the "democrats" have the GALL to

blame Republicans for the mess Social Security is in!

It is nice to see the truth told. The Obama campaign has the record for the highest dollar amount spent on negative campaigning ever, if that is indication to what is expected if elected. Most of the comments here are extremely bias and bare no value. As I am sure most of the Obama nation fanatics will think about mine. We could argue back and fourth forever about which campaign is right or wrong, but the fact is that we have to vote based on our own values and morals. Sorry to say but Obama is way to slippery in anything. I come from Illinois where he has done nothing, so why would he suddenly start now. Even he admitted he is not experienced enough to be president. Oh and before you judge or through out false claims about me or McCain; I am a liberal that sees value in McCain and Palin. The country has suffered in this Democratic congress for to long. It is time for real change, not more of the same.
