MoveOn.org targets Senate races

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor October 21, 2008 10:53 AM

MoveOn.org, the antiwar group that has been one of Democrat Barack Obama's most important backers in the presidential race, is now urging members to give money to US Senate candidates.

In a video sent to supporters today, the group's executive director, Eli Pariser, declares that the "biggest untold story in politics" is that Democrats are within reach of 60 seats in the Senate -- a big enough majority to prevent Republicans from using filibusters and procedural votes to stand in the way.

"What's the deal with 60? That;s the magic number because if Democrats have 60 votes, there's nothing Republicans can do to block reasonable progressive proposals on healthcare or energy or Iraq," he says.

Pariser does the math: Democrats hold 51 seats now, are likely to pick up three more on Nov. 4, and there are seven more races that are toss-ups.

Republican groups are pouring money into those races, so the Democratic candidates need cash to compete in get-out-the-vote efforts and TV ads, he said.

"The political winds are blowing in our favor, and Republicans know it," he said.

moveon.org = antiwoman.org

I've been a MoveOn.org member for quite a while, and I am grateful to them for keeping me up to date on issues I care about. I am busy running my own business and raising a family, so I don't always have the time to do the fact checking. Without MoveOn I would often miss out on opportunities to let my voice be heard. I'm not really sure where Peter Truong's anti-woman association to MoveOn comes from. I'm a woman, and MoveOn has made it easier for me to keep track of what's going on in the country... something I know many women appreciate. I know this because the last call party I attended was ALL women who have full and busy lives, but were able to take the time to contribute to the campaign because it was all organized by MoveOn! I am pleased and proud to be associated with this organization!

Ya, I've been a member of MoveOn.org for over 2 years, and I have never seen anything on their website about anti-women. If there was, that would really surprise me because they are an organization that promotes progressiveness and equality.
