Obama ad: Don't get distracted by attacks

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor October 27, 2008 03:01 PM

Barack Obama launched a new national cable ad today, trying to inoculate himself from any last-week attacks from Republican rival John McCain.

"He’s out of ideas, out of touch, and running out of time. But with no plan to lift our economy up, John McCain wants to tear Barack Obama down with scare tactics and smears," the announcer says.

"Why? McCain’s own campaign admits that if the election is about the economy, he’s going to lose. But as Americans lose their jobs, homes, and savings, it’s time for a president who will change the economy, not change the subject."

Its about time an ad like this is made. I can't remember an election with more unhonorable attacks than what McCain is doing right now.

Ain't it the truth? Twenty years of uncontrolled spending. Twenty years of lies and scandals. Eight years of unending harrassment of the only President that ever showed a surplus. Unending wars that their kids never fight in. Unending lies to the religeous right with abosolutely no movement even attempted for their issues. Raygun and the Bush twins have raped this country for the rich and only for the rich. They've seperated anyone that can be devided. They have their party whipped into a fervor only matched by the middle east fanatics.
No, they get voted out now. Forever, until they are gone gone gone.

I wouldn't care if it was Mickey Mouse, I'd still vote for him rather that another lying Republican.

Listen to wisdom. Please don't vote for Obama. He will ruin our country. Socialism will ruin us. Reward hard work and education.... don't give to those who haven't earned it.

Yeah - dont you go and get distracted by my comments on socialism, wealth redistribution, how the supreme court should have ruled to make this a welfare state, the talk about my terrorist buddy or my insane racist reverend, don't listen to anyone that will tell you that the leader of Iran and the United Nations want me to be President because I am weak or that I cut off news outlets that ask me tough questions. Don't listen to anyone that talks to you about the legal motion I filed to in Missouri to set the law after anyone that I don't like what they are saying about how I want to resurrect the ridiculous fairness doctrine so I can control your supposed free speech, don't listen to what the experts say when they call my 'tax cuts' just plain transfer payments and welfare. Don't listen to the Europeans who cannot believe we want a system as bad as theirs.

Just don't listen and vote for me like my blind little sucker. have a nice day.

Negative ads work as last minute bombings. Hillary, FOX news and anonymous internet smear mongers were negative on Obama for 2 years. People tune out the garbage and look at the issues eventually. Plus McCain didn't establish any positive stuff about himself before attacking. He relied on the Viet Nam crap to keep carrying him.

An ATTACK ad warning about attacks...
Why do so many people not see through Obama and the campaign he is running?
He has lied over and over, made promises that are impossible to keep and tried his best to link to the failure of the economy, which with little research is directly due to democrats like Franks and Dodd...

If Obama wins the next four years will be a deeper recession than we are currently in directly due to him and his democrat friends who plan to raise taxes and do handouts (welfare) that never works....

Bush's smear tactics against John Kerry were perhaps the worst in modern history, though McCain's campaign has come close, dropping the "socialist" bomb and the "anti-American" phrase more than once. And let's not forget "terrorist" (by association.) The Republican Campaign Hand Book has not changed its strategy for decades. People are waking up to the fact they can't be scared and bullied into voting for a candidate anymore. Karl Rove, I don't think you can come up with a dirty enough smear to stop Barack at this point, though I'm sure you'll try. It will be a very close election result but I'm confident Barack will overcome any obstacles and prove how bitter and fearful the Republican party really is right now.

I have no doubts that McCain will try everything he has to win the election in this final week, he just won't listen to fellow Republicans telling him to give up, end in dignity, and help other Republicans in Congress. That's not what I call a team player. He talks a lot about Republicans not liking him. So Republicans don't like him, Democrats don't like him, independents don't like him.... who does like him? John McCain just doesn't know when to give up, and hand the country over to the person he knows is better for it.

If Palin is inexperienced, then is Biden’s tendency toward saying things he should not just as bad. Biden’s comment about Obama being tested by someone in his first 6 months (if elected) is almost an invite. At least Palin knows to keep her mouth shut. At least she knows not to exacerbate the situation with unjustified, volunteered comments; Biden does not seem to have a clue, or worse in that he does not seem to be able to help himself !!

Considering Obama’s inexperience and Biden’s gaffs, their dealings on the world stage will be very sub-par compared to McCain/Palin.

If the world is ‘so’ inclined to test Obama (as they did Kennedy) then are all those internationals who favor Obama just wanting a weak US (wake up Libby-0’Libs) !!!
Maybe so they can gain economic advantage themselves.

Since so many have compared Obama to Kennedy is this just a supposedly updated version of “Camelot” (and the fantasy that turned out to be !!). Does that mean young people just like a young president, and are in total denial of the inexperience question. He is young & cute and probably likes to party (or so they would like to think). We can have ourselves a, supposedly, young, hip party pres……………no matter the in-experience.

The amazing thing, is how to the GOP, giving tax breaks to the Corporations & the Wealthy, is great policy... but, giving them instead to the People, that's *socialism...* and *spreading the wealth.*
Hopefully, enough people are seeing how GOP rule has worked for them.
The GOP has held the White House 28 of the last 40 years, including the last 8; nominated seven of the nine Supreme Court justices and held Congress for 12 of the last 14 years, including 6 of the last 8.

Who is calling paying tax redistribution of wealth?? Only John McCain and Sarah Pallin. They are ignorant of methods the government uses to raise revenue. That revenue runs everything from defense to health care and also provides for government subsidies. The Republicans only want to give tax credits to corporate CEOs and their buddies - they have finally driven this economy into the ground!!!!
It is time a Democrate came in and repaired the damage. Let McCain go to Texas or Arizona and take a vacation or something. Sarah can finally go back to her family and plan better strategies for 2012 and beyond. It is time to rebuild America's economy and image. If Obama doesn't win it will be a depression for the foreseeable future. How can Obama and the Democrats be responsible for this mess when the Republicans have had control for most of the past thirty years. When Clinton left a surplus in spite of the Republican majority and Ken Starr who must have made his terms a living hell? This is the direct result of the policies of deregulation and uncontrolled captilism.
Or is welfare okay for the rich just not the poor?

James, It was the Bush administration's neocon economic policies, (primarily deregulation that McCain has historically been a big champion of) that got us into this mess. A grand mess that will not be fixed overnight by Obama or anyone else. Contray to what you and your ilk are posting, The world will not come to an end, America will not be taken over by terrorist, we won't become a communist state etc simply because Obama is elected president. The greatest redistribution of wealth in the history of the world was the Bush tax cuts. This took over $1trillion from the working class excess Social Security contributions and gave it to the wealthy. There has not been an excess of income tax revenue versus spending in the last 40 years. What was allowing the national debt to be paid down during the last few years of the Clinton administration was the excess Social Security payments that were supposed to cover the Baby Boomers.

@ Barbara:

how will obama ruin the country? Pull your head out of the sand and educate yourself for a change.

What socialism? Removing the tax breaks that Bushies gave the super-wealthy is not socialism. Giving $850 billion to crooked banks IS socialism.
Palin already has the same "socialist" methods in Alaska. She increased taxes on oil companies doing business in AK and is giving the money to Alaskans. Why is it ok for repubs to do it, but not ok for dems to propose the same thing nationwide??

I work hard, i work my *ss off every day. I am educated. I put MYSELF through college 10 years ago, and I'm still paying the student loans because there just aren't enough decent paying jobs in this country anymore. Why? Because rich CEO's have everyone working twice as many hours for half as much pay. While they reward themselves with multiple houses, I can't even afford one.

Come on OBAMA! take their money and give it to me!! (ha if only it really WILL BE like the repub's are whining)

Look, here is the deal.
George Bush supports vicious dictatorships such as saudi arabia and usbekastan who are funding the Taliban openly.he went after Saddam, which we can all agree the guy was a terrible person. How can someone keep saying we arre winning Iraq in the name of freedom when half the country is suffering with out food, power and water. Just give them more weapons instead? Maybe thats cheaper than actually following up on promises made by this admisnistration. So why dont you take a look at the facts . 1) McCain has voted in favor of most Bushs failed policies. 2) He wants to stay in Iraq for as long as it takes and let me tell you this is turing into another vietnam real quick. 3) Do you you want someone who
was tortured in camps to be making the decisions that effect your cheildrens health and prosperity? 4) He chose a vp that has used 400k of your money (tax payers) to sue the federal govenment so that the polar bears would be taken off the endangered species list.( the alsakan refuge contains lots and lots of oil, hint, hint) Ya so shes already a liar saying shes not for big interest groups so i want a republican supporter to tell me why she would sue to take the polar bears off?? Obama is from the politically corrupt state of Illinois! He is/was our most liberal and worst Senator. He did absolutely nothing for our state, except for his relationship with the racist preacher, the terrorist and the crooked guy on trial that he bought his home from. They even delayed his trial so Obama would not have to be involved with it, because he most likely is involved. McCain is a hero!! He has sacrificed for his country. All of us military people have, but not like he did.
People, think about it! McCain is not using smear tactics. He's trying to warn our nation of the severe issues that will happen by voting in someone who will not let you really know who he is. This guy Obama was not even ready to be a Senator and is still not! Why are you all so willing to put a smooth talker "only" into the White House. McCain/Palin are improvements to our country. I am so disgusted with McCain attack comments that I am going out of my way to ask all my Republican family and friends to vote for Obama. Enough is enough! My elderly in-laws in Florida are bombarded by scare tactics by the Republicans daily which is stressing them and their friends unnecessarily. The concept of 'redistribution of wealth' and linking it to 'Marxism' & 'Socialism' is ridiculous. For those who are talking of having a deeper recession if Obama is elected, guess what? Neither McCain nor Obama will be able to fix the deficit that is created by the Republicans in the next four years. The recession which we are in will take about 3 yrs to come out of it completely. There is not much left at the top to trickle down. It is about time for McCain to end his campaign with dignity.

Sigh, here we go again...
1. Limited socialism is necessary in a large country. We have socialism now (schools, fire, police, roads, military, limited healthcare). If you are unable to understand why it is cheaper to pay for someone's care upfront (via taxes) than in the back-end (via cost increase in health care due to defaults on payment), please take a class on economics at your local community college. Also, similarly, if you fail in seeing a benefit from helping someone get back up on their feet through upfront (taxes) payment (education/time limited finacian assistance) rather than via back end (prison expense - another, larger tax), also, please take a class on Economics of Crime and Justice.
2. Obama palled with "terrorists". Aside from the fact that that has been debunked, and that whole McCain being the keynote speaker of ACORN in 2006... lets remember McCain's associations. If Obama palled with "terrorists", then by the same logic McCain was directly involved in perpetration of the Keating ripoff. Furthermore, pastors that support McCain blamed 9/11 on far more ridiculous issues than Rev. Wright. McCain's religious supporters used our own American freedoms (freedom to choose who you love) to blame the attacks on. Wright was dead on in blaming America's not minding its own business (See CIA's training of Taliban, particularly Osama Bin Laden, to resist USSR in the 80s). So yes, 9/11 was, tragically, chickens coming home to roost.
3. Please review the campaign attacks. Obama attacks McCain on healthcare (not a huge fan of O's plan, but I like it more than McC's)., He attacks McCain on his economic plan (also, see your local CC for a class on economics and why Trickle down theory does not work). McCain's attacks are personal and irrelavant to the candidacy as they are based on false accusations and strained logic. Obama attacks the plans themselves without focusing on McCains past, which is more spotty than one may assume (Betraying US military interests in exchange for medical care, failing school, crashing 4 planes (3 due to negligence), complete failure on economic ideas, being one of the engineers of iraq war... so on so forth).
4. Obama's "wealth redistribution" plan. Yes, it is technically wealth redistribution, but it is badly needed. Why? Because concentration of wealth in a small sliver of the populace leads to general economic failure when the society at large becomes unable to afford basic items. Why it will work? Obama plans to invest heavily in infrastructure that we badly need (falling bridges anyone?). Using the tax (which is very small btw, a few extra percent on income above 250K), this "redistribution" will go directly to lower class working people. How? It will require a number of manual intensive construction projects which will translate in many jobs for "Average Joes".

Granted, most people voting for McCain will probably be unable to read past the first few letters, so this was probably a frustrated mental/typed masturbation. Oh well.

Geez, where to begin and try and keep it succinct. OK, first off, if the vice presidential nominee that is one 72-year-old heartbeat away from the being the leader of the free world is so scared of the media that she won't do Meet the Press, how is she going to handle Putin? As for redistributing the wealth, wake up, it has been redistributed for the last eight years to the wealthy. Republicans have had their shot, and with it they have worshipped at the altar of deregulation which brought on the financial crisis, trashed our Constitution and stomped on freedoms too numerous to mention.

Have we also forgotten that the president is a mere figure head with a few exceptions. Do you really think that because the house and senate may have majority control that they will go for eveything Obama promises.

I am relieved that we are getting close to the election. This campaign has come at a time when the American people needed unity and leadership. What we have had for almost 8 years is division and a president and administration completely unable to lead the country because of it's focus on personal gain and party politics. And now we have campaign. The McCain-Palin team has further divided the country and actually created an unhealthy atmosphere of hate. I have seen and heard things in this campaign that sadden me as an American and a Vietnam veteran. There is a book just out "The Last Campaign" that retells Bobby Kennedy's bid for the nomination. Trickle down economics absolutely works! America's wealth has been trickling (correction - "gushing") to Asian and middle-eastern countries in the form of jobs, manufacturing, dividend re-investment, oil and infrastructure development. All this inspite of ZERO taxes paid by 2/3 of the Fortune 500 companies using loopholes to erase the “high tax rate" that McCain keeps talking about. These foreign countries then use this wealth to loan America money to buy more stuff from them.

We already have a universal healthcare system in the US! It relies on the uninsured being able to tap Emergency room care at nearly ten times the cost of preventive care and passing on those costs to tax payers driving up state budget deficits. McCain's $5000 tax credit would shift the burden to the Federal government.

America's future supply of oil is guaranteed!...by 130,000 troops sitting in the gulf permanently and running an off-budget tax funded cost of $150B annually. Its just another social give-away to the oil companies in the form of lives and treasure. McCain suggests new tax cuts and de-regulation to motivate companies to build 45 nuclear power plants. Not in my backyard!

Everything about these examples is due to an obsolete borrow, spend and de-regulate philosophy that McCain whole heartedly shares with Bush. His tax cuts/credits will add an addition trillion dollars of debt compared to Obama's investments (acording to tax policy center).

Ofcourse, in every other way McCain and Bush are quite different.

Very few educated posts here. Especially by Robert in NYC. Stop buying into the socialism crap said by our American War Hero Nominee. He has by far waged the most pathetic campaign I ever remember seeing. His lies, his attacks, his downright disrespect towards his opponent Barack Obama says enough. Oh, and don't you all remember in the 2nd debate. Where Mccain tried to defend his statement of just blowing up the middle east to a friend by saying " It was a joke, just to close friends joking around, it wasn't meant to be serous etc" No not a exact quote, but it is exactly what he was saying. Sorry Mr.Mccain, We don't need another attack first, think about the consequences later kind of president. I may owe my respect and my admiration to Mr.Mccain for his honorable service to our great nation. I do not however, owe him my vote for that reason. His choice of Sarah Palin should be insulting to republicans all around. His skipping around questions and ignoring them flat out. You say Obama does that? Did we watch the same debates? He even flat out answered the questions about Bill Ayers not to mention the ACORN CRAP. Yet, Sarah and John still keep plunging ahead saying he needs to answer that stuff. Um idiots he has, and very well might I add. Is barack flawless ? No, but at least I know he hasn't voted with George Bush 90% of the time. I also know that John Mccain's own children don't buy into John Mccain. He finally got his liberal daughter to become a republican by giving her a paying job within the campaign. If you want this country to be ran like he has already ran his campaign. By all means, vote Mccain/Palin in less then a week. But if you do, don't B____ when everything unfolds... Good day.

The Republican party is still relying on a calculated decision made in 1967 to court lower- and middle-class whites by labeling any Democratic candidate an "out-of-touch liberal," "elitist," "socialist," or "radical" - sometimes all at once.

That worked in 1967, when their targeted demographic was the angry southerner disaffected by what they saw as unwarranted intrusion by the federal government - in the name of integration. It's worked pretty well since then, too.

The real Republican platform has been and continues to be something else: redistribution of our country's wealth to the top 2% (A demographic solidly occupied by Mr and Mrs McCain), and they have succeeded beyond their wildest expectations. You have to give it to the Republicans: when they're bought, they stay bought, by God.

But this year, the truth has become evident to all but the most mindless and bigoted of our citizens: the Republican view of utopian America, i.e., a completely unregulated economic system relying on trickle-down economics, is just a euphemism for pissing on the middle class.

And those of us in the middle class are pissed off, and we'll have no more of it.

He's prone to snide remarks. What happened to the substance that I used to think he had? I know he's over 70 years old and perhaps that has addled his brain some. I just don't have confidence in him. He doesn't seem sharp enough, smart enough, articulate enough, stable enough to lead, and he looks weary. I feel sorry for him, because he has stooped so low trying to get his campaign going. I know Obama will bring a fresh new face to the country and I look forward to a real leader taking control. By, by John.

I just read all 48 comments and was struck with the fact that NOT ONE message - by either GOP or Democratic side - could find ANYTHING positive to say about McCain!
Even McCain can't find anything good to say about McCain!

The present Republican party is a party of liers and cheaters, period. They have already ruined the country for the foreseeable future, and still insist, through the most vile tactics, of asking the American people to allow them to do even more damage. Voting Republican is a vote for the end of the United States as an economic, military, and moral power

It's easier to be influnced by emotion and marketing than to take the time to
carefully consider nitty gritty details and make comparisons and decisions based on the actual statements and proposal by the candidates. I wish the media were more helpful in this regard. I just hope that after the election is over, we all start to realize we must "get it together" as a nation in order to solve the very real problems that we're all facing. It's no joke, and it's not a sporting event with winning and losing teams. Statements by this nation's founders during the Revolution show the kind of steadfast determination we'll all be needing.

McCain appeared to be a breath of fresh air in 2000 and serious contender for the presidency.

His lack of integrity, honor, and horribly misguided choice in Palin during the 2008 campaign not only cost him my vote...but ripped away all respect I had for him.

Obama= Handouts Redistribute??? I worked hard for what I have. Those who want things work for them. 25% of his support is based on the notion that government will provide poor America with Capital, Job and Medical handouts. We all know that's not the reality. Government will do as they always have. . . .WHAT BENEFITS THE GOVERNMENT. In touch with the middle class. . .hilarious. . We will see where the middle class stands after a 4 year democratic run government. Happy when you got Bush tax breaks?? How about the nice $1600 check you receieved mid way through the year?? Kiss those goodbye. Its a wealthy tax hike now, I give it 2 years before it will be a gas or cigarette or some kind of increase that WILL EFFECT MIDDLE AMERICA. Anyone who supports Mccain/Palin is clearly small-minded, uneducated and blind to the direct dishonesty that both of the Republican candidates have displayed during the campaign. Trickle-down economic theories do not work because of the greed of the people who are supposed to trickle it down. The cry of Socialist in regard to Obama is amusing since with the recent economic meltdown that has been led by the Republicans the Government has now stepped in to become the biggest player in our "Free market". And the protests that this all started with Clinton is nonsense. Policies that effect the economy don't take years to have an impact they are generally felt no more than 18 months out. So this doesn't sit as his feet this belongs to "W". (Which stands for the worst president in history.) The only good that has come from Bush's tenure is that he has effectively crippled the Republicans for years to come. Unfortunately, like the businesses his daddy gave him, he has also crippled the whole world. Way to go Georgey baby!

I amdistressed, not simply by John McCain's supporters desperate acts to demonize his opponent, but by those who are so willing and even eager to believe them- to believe the worst about a man who is putting himself on the line to serve his country as President.. The deteriorating world situation demands that we understand that our own hearts and minds need to change and grow. Divisive words and actions, efforts to attack those who disagree with us, or who appear different from us, are not the best that we can do. As Barack Obama has said many times: we are better than this. And our world will only change when we find more mature and intelligent ways of working together and better ways of competin with one another.

We certainly are regarding the two most important issues of this decade... The Economy and The "War" in Iraq. 1.) Under BOTH parties the bailouts will continue. 2.) Under BOTH parties, we won't give up control of Iraq's oil reserves to our "enemies" for military and strategic reasons.

I am an independent and supported John in 2000 election during the primary. I believed in his integrity and service for our country. However I am truly sad to see those values of John McCain are being replaced with false Ads, country dividing & destructive statements, slandering, and not to mention the choice of Palin as VP. I am deeply worried that a good 40% of voters out there are still tolerating and supporting such behaviors. As a nation, we are rewarded or punished by the actions of the majority during this election. Obama may not be the "BEST" out there to be the president, but for the choices we are given, Obama is definitely the clear choice over McCain (for me at least). Sorry Sen. McCain, for me it's "Country First".

Amazing!!

When you kill one person, it's murder. But when you kill tens of thousands people (by invading another country), it's "spreading the democracy"....

When you give billions of dollars to the weaithiest few, it's called "tax cut". But when you give a few hundred to a working middle class family, it's called "spreading the wealth" or "socialism".

It's just amazing how short-sighted these republican supporters are.

McCains doesn't need attacks, just listen to Obama himself:
1) He made the point corporations may be taxed 35%, but most pay fewer taxes due to tax loop holes. SOLUTION: First, close the tax loop holes, then raise their taxes. Just think about the increase in their tax burden. I'm not defending the current situation, but an increase like that could have some serious consequences. Obama said it, not a McCain ad.
2) He wants to abolish the right-to-work laws in every state. Obama says it, not McCain. Is this how American industry can best compete in the global market, or is it what is best for American union leaders?
3) Obama promises cuts and promises to tax the rich to pay for his health care plan. The bottom line is... MORE MANDATORY SPENDING. Another government program that will run and operator no better and no more efficiently than any other and WHO HAS PICKED UP THE TABS FOR THOSE??? WE WILL AGAIN!!!
4) Obama's spiritual adviser for 30 years was Rev. Jeremiah Wright. McCain didn't make that true, Obama did. McCain didn't expose Wright's teachings, Wright did that himself. Rev. Wright himself defended Black Liberation Theology written my James Cone. Here are a few quotes from his book "Black Theology and Black Power":
>> "American society leaves blacks with no alternative but radical transformation or social withdrawal. So-called Christianity, as commonly practiced in the United States, is actually the racist Antichrist."
>> "While it is true that blacks do hate whites, black hatred is not racism."[Page 14]
>> "Being Christians does not mean following in his (Jesus) steps. Therefore, simply to say that Jesus did not use violence is no evidence relevant to the condition of black people as they decide on what to do about white oppression."[Page 139]
>> "All white men are responsible for white oppression."[Page 24]
>> "If there is any contemporary meaning of the Antichrist, the white church seems to be a manifestation of it."[Page 73]
>> "Whether the American system is beyond redemption we will have to wait and see. But we can be certain that black patience has run out, and unless white America responds positively to the theory and activity of Black Power, then a bloody, protracted civil war is inevitable."[Page 143]
>> "Black Power seeks not understanding but conflict; addresses blacks and not whites; seeks to develop black support, but not white good will."[Page 16]

Conservatives better get out and vote in large numbers. This one couple change the face of America forever... for our children.

Enough with this notion that "I work d@mn hard for my money, I'm not giving it to anyone else!" What kind of school did you go to, where you think that Obama's tax plan is actually the same as him taking money out of your wallet and handing it to some bum on the street? People's ignorance of what is being discussed is appalling. We ALL work hard for our money. But some of us see more value in spending tax revenue on our population, and taking preventative steps with health care, than in fighting unwinnable wars overseas and giving money and incentives to massive corporations that could care less about your quality of life. Wake up people! Just like you are taught at your first job - your boss does not care about you. It's business - get used to it. Do you think that magically changes when you're talking about a massive corporation? Ha. Republican followers love to throw out the "free trade" and "private sector" argument - but are in complete denial that that same free, private sector is causing the economic emergency we are dealing with right now and the same people that take your money and run. Why do you keep defending them?

@ Ol' Whip - hey, at least you had 120k in there! People in my generation (Gen Y) can't even think about saving right now with all the crap that's going on, including the inevitable dismantling of Social Security, something I pay into every month, yet will not be paying for me in 40 years. The economic landscape looks very bleak for me, and the oncoming generation. Whereas the baby boomers could actually afford housing and retirement plans, we can't afford anything. Inflation has shot up through the roof and the deregulation of the private sector has done little to restrain foolish practices. The reason I prefer Obama to McCain on this issue is that Obama realizes, and isn't afraid to admit, that bold change is necessary, from the bottom up, to ensure economic stability in the future. He has outlined several steps he would take to get the ball rolling. Whether or not someone agrees is their choice to make, but at least Obama is detailed, and speaks in terms everyone can understand for how to heal the country. He seeks to unify - not divide - people of all faiths, backgrounds and races into contributing to a healthier USA. McCain has made no calls for such unity, the furthest he's gone is calling for "bipartisan support to the bailout package." Like him or not, Obama is running not just as president of the USA, but as a unifying force, and I don't think that force can be held back for much longer.

Hamm Sammich said: Please explain why tax cuts directed at people like me - in the middle class - are considered handouts, but tax cuts directed at those at the upper echelons (who are incidentally much more inclined to save, rather than spend) are considered economic stimulus?

Let me answer with a story:
Suppose that every day, ten people go out for dinner and the bill for all ten comes to $100.
If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go like this:

The first four people (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1.
The sixth would pay $3.
The seventh would pay $7.
The eighth would pay $12.
The ninth would pay $18.
The tenth person (the richest) would pay $59.

So, that's what they decided to do.

The ten people ate in the same restaurant every day and seemed quite happy with the
arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve. (Bush tax cuts)
'Since you are all such good customers,' he said,
'I'm going to reduce the cost of your meal by $20.'
Dinner for the ten now cost just $80.

The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes.
So the first four people were unaffected. They would still eat for free.
But what about the other six people - the paying customers?
How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his
'fair share?'
They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33.
But if they subtracted that from everybody's share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to eat.
So, the owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each person's bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay. And so:
Under the new cut, the fifth person, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings).
The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33%savings).
The seventh now pays $5 instead of $7 (28%savings).
The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings).
The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings).
The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings).
Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to eat for free. But once outside the restaurant, the people began to compare their savings.
'I only got a dollar out of the $20,' declared the sixth person.
They pointed to the tenth person,' but they got $10!'
'Yeah, that's right,' exclaimed the fifth person.
'I only saved a dollar, too.
It's unfair that he got ten times more than I got'.
That's true!!' shouted the seventh persono.
'Why should he get $10 back when I got only two?
The wealthy get all the breaks!'
'Wait a minute,' yelled the first four people in unison.
'We didn't get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!'
The nine people surrounded the tenth and complained nonstop.
The next night, the tenth person didn't show up to eat so the nine sat down and had dinners without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn't have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!
And that, ladies and gentlemen, journalists, and college professors, is how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction.
Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they (Corporations) just may not show up anymore.
In fact, they might go to another country and start dining where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.
For those who understand, no explanation is needed.
For those who do not understand, no explanation is possible.

A civilization is judged by how well it cares for its most vulnerable citizens.
I do not consider the top 1% - those who own the wealth of our nation, nor the corporations which outsource their work to third world countries in order to increase profits -our most vulnerable citizens. Somehow caring about all of us, as a nation, ensuring basic health care, nutrition and shelter has been trumped by greed, avarice and cruel judgements.
I don't remember democracy working this way?
If that is socialism, I will pay the taxes, and I will vote for it.

This is a typical democrat battle cry and there may have been a surplus, but where I live we were in a deep recession during the last several years of Clintons' term, so my opinion is that any surplus was just numbers on a ledger, not real, because problems were already arising from the 'DOTCOM' bubble busting that made Clintons first term look financially good...

I see you all have not lost your fight :

GOOD! Because we have a lot to do. You! (the American people) are going to have to take back control of your elected government at every level, and set your government back on the right path of service to you, and the greater good of the World.

Barack Obama and the democrats are your best hope of doing that now. Tell your family, friends, and everyone you know to support them as best they can. Because the Bush McCain vote fraud, vote cheating, vote buying, vote manipulation machine is already hard at work to cheat you again. And we all know what a disaster that has been the past 8 years of Bush McCain.

Barack Obama and the democrats will need all the power you can give them at every level of government (Federal, State, County, and local City elected governments). Obama and the democrats will have an enormous mess to fix for the American people, and the rest of the World. A mess caused by the corrupt Bush McCain administration.

You see, starting back in 2000, and before 911, it was mostly the Republican governors, Republican legislatures, and county elected Republican officials that conspired with the corrupt Bush McCain administration to raise college, and university tuitions by the fastest, and highest rate increases in American history. Some state tuitions went up by as much as a WHOPPING! 30% in one year.

The reason the Bush McCain administration did this was to force struggling working class kids into the military to pay for the sudden jump in tuition. Which was forced on them by the corrupt Bush McCain administration, and their corrupt Republican Governors, and republican controlled state legislatures.

See, Bush McCain had plans to get us into all these immoral, foolish, criminal, and unnecessary wars from the start. So they could use these wars to seize power, and later to get reelected. But, for their evil plan to work they needed more volunteer soldiers struggling to pay for an education whose blood they could spill to help them seize more power. Remember Bush McCain's "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!" theatrics.

The exploitation, and lost lives of these finest Americans is despicable, disgusting, immoral, corrupt and criminal. And it makes me SICK, and ANGRY!

You will have to vote for Obama, and the democrats in overwhelming numbers to overcome the Bush McCain vote fraud machine. Vote early if you can. Then help your fellow Americans cast their votes now, and on through election day. Vote for Obama, and the democrats like your life, and the lives of your loved ones depends on it. Because it does. You will not survive 4 more years of "Let Them Eat Cake" Bush McCain, and their republican allies.

Just look at the mess we have now.

You can fix this mess with your votes for Obama, and the democrats. And REMEMBER, no matter which of us may stumble or fall, the rest of you must continue to surge forward for Barack Obama, and the democrats, and for your-selves most of all. The children, and the World are counting on us.

It's in your hands now. And I know you will get it done.

God bless all of you.

At his voting record? The mainstream media is just poisoning you with all these positive news of Obama leading polls which are biased and are programmed to make you all believe that he is leading the race. Not everything that is going wrong is the Republicans' fault. Much of it is because of the Democratic controlled Congress!

James is an ideolidiot. That's a portmanteau of ideologue and idiot. But I doubt that James knows what the word portmanteau means. He is so convinced that trickle down economics is the only answer. Poor James, he doesn't know history. He doesn't realize that trickle down hasn't worked and that's why were in this pickle in the first place. James thinks the only hand outs should be to big corporations, as that is where the big "welfare" checks have been going for too long.

Get distracted - NO - GET TO THE TRUTH Obama is all about Tax and spend - he has a Robin Hood mentality and will wreck the ecomomy with his plans to redistribute the wealth. Beware all those associations and friends of his - liberals, socialists, racists -- Ayers, Wright, Pelosi, Reid, - DO NOT GET ON THIS BANDWAGON - it leads only to big government and government control. Small business will suffer and go under - under the weight of his taxes.

Michael said: I am an ideolidiot. That's a portmanteau of ideologue and idiot.

Flaunting mimsy remarks that because my economic opinion differs, makes me ignorant really shows how much smog he must have in his mind...(oh my 3 uses of a portmanteau)...

Personally I would much prefer seeing the whole tax system be abolished and move to the Fair Tax system or some facsimile.

I could go off and make some negative remarks, but that seems to be well handled by those that are blinded by there liberal beliefs and assume that to be conservative implies ignorance.

Notice to All Employees

As of November 5, 2008, when President Obama is officially elected into office, our company will instill a few new policies which are in keeping with his new, inspiring issues of change and fairness:

1. All salespeople will be pooling their sales and bonuses into a common pool that will be divided equally between all of you. This will serve to give those of you who are underachieving a “fair shake.”

2. All low level workers will be pooling their wages, including overtime, into a common pool, dividing it equally amongst yourselves. This will help those who are “too busy for overtime” to reap the rewards from those who have more spare time and can work those extra hours.

3. All top management will now be referred to as “the government.” We will not participate in this “pooling” experience because the law doesn't apply to any of us.

4. The “government” will give eloquent speeches to all employees every week, encouraging it's workers to continue to work hard “for the good of all.”

5. The employees will be thrilled with these new policies because it's “good to spread the wealth.” Those of you who have underachieved will finally get an opportunity; those of you who have worked hard and had success will feel more “patriotic.”

6. The last few people who were hired should clean- out their desks. Don't feel bad, though, because President Obama will give you extended unemployment, free healthcare, free handouts, free oil for heating your home, free food stamps, and he'll let you stay in your home for as long as you want even if you can't pay your mortgage. If you appeal directly to our democratic congress, you might even get a free flat screen TV and a coupon for free haircuts (shouldn't all Americans be entitled to nice looking hair?) !!!

If for any reason you are not happy with the new policies, you may want to rethink your vote on November 4th.

Karl Rove has repaid this phenomenal democratic experiment called America with some of the sleaziest, undemocratic, quasi fascistic campaigns imaginable. He is a blight against true American ideals, vision, and people - and so are those who sought, seek or did benefit by his filthy tactics and mind. He is a disgrace to the nation. For a hero like John McCain to throw his lot in with Rove tells me everything I need to know about what a follower of filth McCain has chosen to be. Add that opportunistic moron Palin, and you got what you got: the 2008 Republican losers. Next time, Repulican bretheren, try thinking with decency instead of filth. America still values truth, justice and the American way. - patriotically yours

Hello, all you working middle class people, just thought i'd drop in with a suggestion. If social security and medicare are going broke and is not going to be there for us,why are we paying into it?And since all our retirement plans are going down the drain, maybe outgoing president Bush will share his with us.I guarantee his is still healthy and well padded.Idont think america owes him a pension for what he did while he was in office. What did he do for us?Ibet Bush, cheney and the grab all you can get republicans dont have to worry about whether they can afford the gas to go back to work so they can pay some more taxes.Thats what kind of shape this country is really in.It is the working middle class that keep this country running and these are the very people who are suffering the most, having to make choices between things they really need and what they have to have to get by.Let me take this time to give a shout out to some of these hardworking people.Nurse's who take care of your sick, truckdrivers who haul in the things we all use, loggers who spend countless hours out in all kinds of weather, carpenters who build the houses to sell, concrete finishers who make that walkway look good, iron workers who make sure the metal structures are safe, factory workers, school bus drivers, folks, you would'nt believe what little they get paid, and so many others of whom these are just a few.If i have left any out ,i certainly did not mean to ,i deeply respect each and every one of america's workers ,from the paper boy to the plumber, who doe's not make 250 .000,These are the people Barak Obama is talking about.and these are the kind of people that the republicans are calling welfare. well, if these (welfare) would sit down for a little while and not go do all these jobs,i'd say an apology would be forth coming ,cause america would be at a stand still. So heres to someone who actually cares about the working class in america,GO OBAMA 08

Is Obama not a Manchurian Candidate? I still don't understand who this guy is. He has no Birth Certificate, at least not one he is willing to share with us. He won't release any of his records from his educational experience, the most substantive experience he has, and his whole thing last night was like a "get comfortable with me in the white house" propaganda piece.

It's like he has become a part of the American so called "branded" lexicon whereby it's not the product that matters but the marketing and the advertising.

Who is this guy? Where is he from? He's lived under three different names, he has not history- where are all of his Harvard, Columbia friends? Who knows this guy? The only people we know of are now Wright, Ayres and now Khaliki(?) and a guy named Rezko who we worked for in Chicago who got him started in politics who has connections to Syria and Iraqi terrorists and is a convicted federal prisoner.

What is going on in this country?
