Obama has more money to spend

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor October 21, 2008 09:49 AM

Democrat Barack Obama's advantage in campaign cash for the stretch run became even clearer this morning when he filed his monthly report with the Federal Election Commission.

After spending $87.5 million in September, his campaign still began October with $133.6 million in the bank, thanks to his record-smashing $150 million haul during the month.

Republican rival John McCain spent $37 million last month, leaving him only $47 million in public money available through Election Day. McCain is accepting public financing, which gives him $84.1 million for the general election campaign, but also caps his spending at that amount.

An edge for the Republican National Committee over its Democratic counterpart is narrowing the gap somewhat -- the RNC reported $77 million on hand as of Sept. 30, compared to $27.4 million for the DNC -- but Obama still has far more money to plow into ads, get-out-the-vote efforts, and other initiatives in the final two weeks.

I want the candidates to stop spending money on the "campaign' and distribute it among the needy IN AMERICA!. The dollar figures for these campaigns are phenomenal when so many of our elderly are living on $600 a month!

If the tide was turned in that McCain had raised the amount of money Obama had and Obama had agreed to limit his spending to the public money, every day the Globe would be posting "news" about how much influence was being bought by McCain's contributors and how altruistic Obama was for limiting spending and, hence, avoiding outside influences. However, in its never ending quest to promote its liberal agenda rather than report the news, the Globes has not addressed the special interest influences associates with the sums raised by Obama. If you want real news, ignore the Globe.

Yeah, ignore the Globe. A good way to do that is to read it's articles and post comments on them.

The media will not start hitting Obama with all the shady associations he has until he is president it a lot more news worthy to have him and his associates around for 4 years instead of just for a few months. Scandals sell.
I am surprised when Obama opens his mouth that a skeleton does not fall out.
If Obama's campaign spending habits are any indication of how he will spend the US tax payers money, we are definately gonna be broke, I cant see anyone spending $600,000,000 dollars on a job that pays $459,000. He says there are no special interest groups involved, whoever believes that lie needs serious help.
He is put in Harvard at the request of a high placed Arab, he holds good buy parts for know Arab terrorist, associates with know domestic terrorists, and 23 year associations with racist pastors (supposed man of god yeah right).
But 50% of this the American People are so politically correct that they feel just because he is a African that he should be given a chance. I feel if he had better moral character then maybe yes but not with all the moral character baggage Obama is hauling around.

This proves that you can buy the presidency. It has nothing to do with abilities to do the job just how much monies you can access. So much for earning the position, with the hard work like the dreams our parents grew up with and taught us. Money wins!! not the best or most qualified no matter who it is neitehr of the bozo's deserve the position.

McCain is too old to be President. And if he was as good as some people might think then why is he behind in the polls? The only reason Obama isn't far ahead in the polls is his race. If he were white he would be seriously kicking McCains behind.

Steve from Texas comments that this proves you can buy the presidency. Of course you can, we have living proof in the White House right now and for the past eight years. And when that fails you can always have your buddy at Diebold tinker with the election results.

Fortunately when Mr. Obama becomes president Steve from Texas wil also benefit.

If Obama is really representing all the poor and middle class of this country, then where is all his $600 million (so far, $150 million in September alone) in campaign contributions coming from? And why is he spending it like a drunken sailor on a political campaign (and outspending McCain 4-1)? Is this an indication of what he will do if he wins the presidency? This country needs some fiscal responsibility, not higher taxes to support proflagate spending and giveaways.

So let me get this straight, the falling economy is what is driving Obama (which makes no sense in and of itself) Obama is going to fix that! yet the headline states that he has "taken" more from people for his campaing than anyone ever. Is it me or what.! dah!

What it "proves" is that there are whole lot of Americans are willing to put their money where their vote is and help Obama get elected. Talk about sour grapes! This is probably the first election in modern history where the republicans havent vastly outspend the democratic candidate. And that money was, of course, primarily based on corporate bribes. Obama's cash is primarily based on small donations from millions of American voters so desperate to kick out the republicans that they are willing to give Obama their gas money. Now *that's* democracy in action.

Amy, you blame racism for Obama not being further in the lead. However, in your comments you express ageist remarks. Did you realize that both race and age are covered under the Civil Rights Act? If an employer does not hire someone because of age, they are committing a crime that has the same punishment as a non-hire for race. So, in fact, you are just as guilty as the racists you allude to in your post.

What if things were switched around? Think about it. Would the country's collective point of view be different? Could racism be the culprit?

Ponder the following:

What if the Obamas had paraded five children across the stage, including a three month old infant and an unwed, pregnant teenage daughter?

What if John McCain was a former president of the Harvard Law Review?

What if Barack Obama finished fifth from the bottom of his graduating class?

What if McCain had only married once, and Obama was a divorcee?

What if Obama was the candidate who left his first wife after a severe disfiguring car accident, when she no longer measured up to his standards?

What if Obama had met his second wife in a bar and had a long affair while he was still married?

What if Michelle Obama was the wife who not only became addicted to pain killers but also acquired drugs illegally through her charitable organization?

What if Cindy McCain graduated from Harvard?

What if Obama had been a member of the Keating Five? (The Keating Five were five United States Senators accused of corruption in 1989, igniting a major political scandal as part of the larger Savings and Loan crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s.)

What if McCain was a charismatic, eloquent speaker?

What if Obama couldn't read from a teleprompter?

What if Obama had military experience that included discipline problems and a record of crashing seven planes?

What if Obama was known to display publicly, on many occasions, a serious anger management problem?

What if Michelle Obama's family had made their money from beer distribution?

What if the Obamas had adopted a white child?

You could easily add to this list. If things were switched around, do you believe the election numbers would be as close as they are?

This is what racism does. It covers up, rationalizes and minimizes positive qualities in one candidate and emphasizes negative qualities in another.

We need to stop playing the so called "Race Card. The is about Change. We have alot of young voters that has a sound minds and realize what is needed in this world. Children need to have things spelled out for them and that is someone who can identify with them. Is the Old folks that continue to throw out this Race Card and one day our heavly father will have the last word.

the most that can be donated is $5000.00, by an individual it is $2300.00. a lot of people have sent Obama money...

Obama's money is coming from private donations to his campaign, most of which are small amounts. Over 3.1 million donors have contributed, with an average contribution of $86. Last month's record haul was in part due to more than half a million new donors, in addition to those who had contributed before. He opted not to accept millions of dollars from taxpayers and to, instead, let his supporters finance him.

John McCain accepted the tax dollars, so his fundraising is limited to the associated guidelines. When he talks about slashing federal funding, it makes me wonder if his first step shouldn't have been not to accept federal funding for his own campaign.

Meriam,

This is money that US citizens have been donating to Obama. He has an obligation to use it, not give it back to the people.

"...there are whole lot of Americans are willing to put their money where their vote is..."

And a select few willing to put a whole lot of money where their vote is. Which is why McCain and Obama originally agreed to only take public financing to prevent the influence of special interests. Only one of those two kept their promise, but you'll never see that mentioned in the Globe. I guess Obama saw all the money he could gather from people spend himself and decided against public financing. Is that really the person to get us out of the financial mess we're in?

And Jonathan, if education is so important, how is it the richest man in America for the last decade was a college dropout?

Posted by Andrew October 21, 08 03:57 PM

The richest man in America is Warren Buffett, and he has a college degree.
The second richest man Bill Gates went to Harvard, did not complete so he can concentrate more on a fledgling business he started with Paul Allen.

Any one concerned with the fact that Mr. Obama didn't keep his word with regard to public funding? I hope most people understand what that means… Also, I think it says a lot with regard to his inability to make a decision. Sure the War… He took a stance and I applaud it however; if he was a Senator at the time and was privy to the information at the time - right or wrong I’m sure he would have voted for the war when he realized there was no lever for “PRESENT”.

Jonathan, if you're going to include all of Palin's schools don't you think it would be fair to include all of Obama's? Or how about that in 2006 Biden was rated the worst Senator?? But, my comment is more about money; yesterday on Black Planet Barack Obama had a video asking for more money; basically saying that McCain and Palin had a lot of money behind them for the push to the finish and that's how Bush won. He went on to say that if they wanted to compete they would need the support. Obama has more money than McCain, he's spent more money than McCain (from what I can gather), don't you think it's disingenuous for him to intimate that he doesn't? They are all liars, now we just have to decide which of them is the lesser of two evils, again.

Our nation is in financial trouble and these men are spending money like there is no tomorrow. What does that say about them? Who's going to protect our nation from going broke, who's going to get it back on track? Is there going to be another depression, feels like it.
Between people running for office and the executives that made out like bandits, when they lost their, what are we thinking as a nation?
If, you give it to them, they will make it better? I think it's time people take a hard look, at what the top people are doing to middle America, it's being taken away from us

Quit playing and talking about the race card. It just "ain't so." Besides, Obama is a half black. His mama, the one who DID NOT leave him, was the white half here. So.... quit talking about racisim in America and Obama should too. Let's get real!
