Obama: McCain fabricating attack on 'Joe'

Posted by Scott Helman, Political Reporter October 21, 2008 07:36 PM

MIAMI -- To hear Barack Obama tell it, he fully expects to be attacked by John McCain, because McCain is flagging in the polls and time is running out. Obama often says, somewhat boastfully, that he can stomach a few more weeks of the barrage, no problem, but the country can't take four more years of Republican economics.

At the same time, Obama frequently expresses incredulity at what is being thrown at him. He did so again today in Miami, expressing amazement that McCain was accusing him of unfairly targeting the now-infamous Ohio voter Joe Wurzelbacher, better known as Joe the Plumber.

"He has decided to completely make up, just fabricate, this notion that I've been attacking Joe the Plumber," Obama said. "I've got nothing but love for Joe the Plumber. That's why I want to give him a tax cut."

McCain, Obama said, was "just saying this stuff, just making it up."

"Apparently Senator McCain's decided that if he can't beat our ideas he's going to make up ideas and run against those," Obama said.

To be sure, Obama has done plenty of attacking of his own, and not all of it fair and accurate.

PROMISES what a sweet music to our ears to hear the candidates make promises which to my estimation 99% will never be fulfill. The candidate knows well in advance before the election that making promises is helpful not to you the voter but to him the candidate himself.I totally ignore PROMISES but the most important thing to look for in the candidate for President is CHARACTER.If the character is clean, honest and trustworthy we can rest assure he will do the job well and perform much better. The type of character that has been tested in the past whether in the battlefield,or anywhere and prevail.

Uh, ok, just throw in this random comment in at the end; it really doesn't make you sound pathetic or anything.

Nope.

What Barack Obama is too decent and honorable to say is that McCain and his nitwit running mate are shameless liars who will say anything in their desperate attempts to garner a few more votes. The Republican campaign believes that hate-mongering and race-baiting are fair tactics. I completely agree with what skmj posted: Americans are looking for honest and trustworthy leaders. McCain and Palin certainly are neither.

I think that the worst thing to come out of this is that the nation now knows that Joe W. has a lean against his house for not paying his taxes, as well as being spotlighted for lack of a plumbing license. I don't know who looks like more of a jerk!

Joe would have remained safe in obscurity even AFTER his televised encounter with Barack Obama if only John McCain hadn't decided to USE him for McCain's political ends.

Much like Cindy used that Doctor to get her illegal opiates from the medical charity she set up. Use 'em and lose 'em.

Now Unlicensed Joe has lots of problems. The tax lien. The lack of a license. And probably the Feds and State wondering how he pays for his striving middle class lifestyle on only $40,000 a year.

This is all typical of the McCain attack strategy. Good for America that he just keeps shooting himself in the foot.

If there are any facts behind those rough characterizations -- "plenty of attacks," "boastfully," "not all..fair and accurate" -- how about just reporting the facts and save the opinions. Isn't that part of journalism 101?

The political attacks are planned to distract from our thinking about capability to analyze and communicate, to have this capability to analyze and communicate result in good judgment in choosing advisors and in coordinating the best ideas for America, not just the simplistic ideas. The simplistic distractions are planned to keep voters from thinking about how much poor judgment (Like Keating Five, the relationship with the Bin Ladin family and the last eight years of agreeing with the administration on war and deregulation) costs Americans in resources and in life and limb.

The special interests and lobby groups want to buy government decisions on the cheap and take advantage of Americans without having to deal with the complex results that might cripple our nation. They get people from the top of their class to represent them and manipulate to take advantage. We are too lax about the possibility that we might be represented by those from the bottom of their class and that we might be making it easy for the special interest lobby groups to take advantage of us. Again!!! They "spread the wealth" from the middle class up to the rich who pay for their services.

Having effective and timely studies by our government led by those from the top of their class has been lacking at great cost to us all. We have lost planes due to neglect in the timely study of flight manuals. We have lost lives and livelihood due to neglect in the timely study of intelligence information. We have lost a solid economy due to neglect in the timely study of needed regulations and deregulations. We have lost our standing in the world due to neglect in the timely study of diplomacy and when and how to successfully use it. Our country has had to have an expensive surge with financial payments to those who would oppose and expensive bailout with hopes that these, although expensive, will fix some of the poor judgment and will work in the long run.

It is time to replace the simplistic attitudes and ideas useful in manipulation with a stronger understanding of ideas useful in doing the strong work needed to get us back on track. This needs to be led by a dedicated president from the top of his class, rather than by the special interest lobby groups who are carefully selected and paid to take advantage of America.

Again!!! Let's be careful in rebuilding our country's capabilities. We cannot buy off on Palin's advice not to be concerned about killing civilians. We cannot buy off on McCain's “I know how to” claims on how to win a war , fix the economy and so on. These are simplistic ideas of those from the bottom of their class, not based on effective studies. They are useful in delighting the emotions of supporters.

The current administration deviate drastically from the fiscal conservatism and drove the country to the pit, thanks to greed and power drunkenness.... Obama will bring the country again to sobriety and return to America to the position of the most respected country in the world.

skmj, you are right, given the fact that McSame has flip flopped on more issues than one can count. His ties to terrorist G. Gordan Liddy, his ties to the Keating 5, his racist evangelical churches and his ties to more lobbyist in Washington there is no choice. Barrack H. Obama is the clear choice.

To hear McCain talk about wether Obama is ready for a crisis.. One must think that ALL negociations with a foriegn country must be with war and battles.

I remember a time when the US was known as a peace bringer, an elder statesman at the ables willing to help settle by talk and reason rather than by a gun.

From what Mccain says - the only way he knows how to settle an arguement is with conflict.

Not absolutely sure what direction the last comment was pointing to, but will say on the balance of past character as you say the field portrays an ex-hard-drinking, womanising, spoilt rich-kid, turned soldier, pow, then politician, with more than one of the usual sleaze scandals, who betrayed and dumped his faithful wife for a younger model and who has displayed a tendency for erratic judgement. Vis-a-vis a young, untested, naive-at-times, greenhorn who has displayed a tendency for poor judgement in terms of his Church pastor/advisors and business associates- your point?

And what is it that Obama has made up out of whole cloth and said in his stump speeches about McCain? Give us an example or else a retraction.

Personally I like promises, as they give us an idea of what the candidate plans on doing with his potential position.
If we go by "CHARACTER" alone what do we see?
A man who has a wife and two daughters, who attended Columbia and Harvard and was a former president of the Harvard Law Review, a man who has run an incredibly clean campaign with a record amount of grassroots donations.
And a man who divorced his first wife to marry the women he was having an affair with, a man who graduated fifth from the bottom of his college graduating class, a man who has been criticized by pundits and polls as to the negativity of his campaign.

If you want to chose your candidate based on "CHARACTER" the choice seems obvious to me.

I don't see how Obama has been attacking "Joe the Plumber," and I really wanted McCain to elaborate on his assertion that Obama has been attacking "Joe" because it might give me a clue about his plans. McCain hasn't gone into detail about this and as far as I can tell, I really have to agree that McCain is twisting and misrepresenting Obama's words. McCain makes blanket statements and then when I go to watch the speeches that he's referring to (full and uncut, without Fox News'sor Huffington Posts' ridiculously skewed commentary), I just don't see it. And yes, the candidates have been attacking each other. This is a campaign, and it's to be expected. However, as far as I can tell, McCain's attacks (and more, those of his running mate and campaign) have little substance, while Obama and his campaign always make a case based on the policies both candidate have proposed. Like all the other moderates... tired of hearing blanket statements and would like detailed comparisons of how each candidate's plan affects us... tired of hearing who is dishonest, who might be a Muslim (and who cares if he is... do we not have religious freedom in this country, did our forefathers not come here to escape religious persecution, hello?), and who is attacking "Joe". To be sure, McCain needs to stop it and stick with the issues. While some of us are willing to hold out for him to finally come to his senses and stick with the issues, others are not, and it's getting really close to election day.

To follow up ...
Is there any evidence that Obama has attacked Joe the Plumber?
I wouldn't want to vote for a candidate who would attack Joe the Plumber. On the other hand, I wouldn't want to vote for a candidate who makes an unfounded allegation that the other candidate has attacked Joe the Plumber.
This is the kind of question that I would hope and expect a journalist to answer in any story about such an allegation.

No, you're absolutely wrong, we need intelligence, rational thinking, and benevolent philosophy. People who rely on character rely on emotion over reason, and are given to snap judgments when their passion overtakes them. This is George Bush (remember how much everyone loved his "character", thought he'd be great to have a beer with?) and this is McCain. Both hide their disinterest in carefully evaluating effective solutions with a terribly dangerous (yet so popular among the red states) "shoot from the hip" approach. Their thinking is that swift, immediate action projects power and leadership. It doesn't, it merely projects stubbornness, myopia, and intellectual deficit.

You are totally right that most of the promises made during a campaign can not be fulfilled -- that all depends on a sympathetic congress. However, IMO, McCain is showing very, very bad character in the way he is personally attacking Obama.

Is John McCain's character so "clean, honest and trustworthy"? He who played with wife number two for a year or more before divorcing wife number one? Doesn't that speak to character.=?

I recently read about Sarah Palin that, as mayor of Wasilla, AK, she determined that rape victims should pay for their own rape kits -- a cost of several hundred dollars that is usually borne by a city's police department. What? You're going to make the victim a victim twice? Is this woman ready to lead?

What does that say about McCain's judgement?

People need to wake up. Obama is not talking about taking Joe the Plumbers money and giving it to people without jobs. That is ridiculous and untrue. He is talking about Mega rich people who are raking in obscene profits while paying their workers minimum wage. If they complain too loud about the low wages, they look for workers in India or China to do the work so they can make even higher profit.

Think about the Walmart hiers making billions a year while their workers can't pay rent. Think about mortgage and finance CEO's with paychecks of 487 million over three years while they rape homeowners. Think about Oil execs making 500 billion a year in profit while they bleed America dry.

Wake up people. These mega rich 1-5% don't let ANYTHING trickle down. They rape the American worker for everything they can and they DON'T PAY TAXES! They write off losses, find every loophole and then have folks like McCain subsidize them. AND YES ... paying taxes is patriotic!! It is how we fund America. The problem is that the middle class carries the burden while the mega-rich carry off the rewards.

by character, do you mean the type of character that divorces a sick wife, to marry a rich one he is having an affair with? Or, who was involved in financial scandal as a senator? Or who has so changed his "straight talk" express integrity, to pander to the far right? He has sold his soul to the base, and you think this is a man of integrity?

OBAMA/BIDEN... character, integrity, and hope.

Is it not common sense people would be curious about a man who was mentioned over 20 times by McCain during the debate? The media especially picked up on this. Anybody would ask, who is this Joe, the plummer?
Obama simply followed up rebuttals using McCain's lead. Now it's the Democrats who have ruined this man's life. Why did McCain choose to use this piece of tape as an example during the debate? Sounds like a plant to me; or was poor Joe at the wrong place at the wrong time?

Both candidates need to stop the inuendo and tell us exactly what the planks in their platforms entail. Myself, personally, I think the order of priority should be:

2. jobs
3. education
4. war in Iraq
5. healthcare

Joe was definitely a plant by Republicans. Thats why McCain cant stop mentioning him.
When will American voters understand that cutting taxes for the middle-class and lower classes doesnt mean Socialism or hand-outs to jobless.
How can the jobless profit from tax-cuts when they dont pay taxes at all? Its the hard-working people who will profit from Obama's plan.
And not all unemployed people are lazy bums. Thousands of people lost their jobs because of factories closing, companies downsizing and small industries going bankrupt.
Is it their fault that they cant find proper jobs? NO!
Its the fault of those companies and Industries who are exporting jobs abroad, off-shoring jobs for greatest profits, cheating the American workers.
Its those greedy corporations and companies that Obama will be taxing more, not the average "Joe".
If American voters dont get that yet, they are the most suicidal people in the world!

I see you all have not lost your fight :

GOOD! Because we have a lot to do. You! (the American people) are going to have to take back control of your elected government at every level, and set your government back on the right path of service to you, and the greater good of the World.

Barack Obama and the democrats are your best hope of doing that now. Tell your family, friends, and everyone you know to support them as best they can. Because the Bush McCain vote fraud, vote cheating, vote buying, vote manipulation machine is already hard at work to cheat you again. And we all know what a disaster that has been the past 8 years of Bush McCain.

Barack Obama and the democrats will need all the power you can give them at every level of government (Federal, State, County, and local City elected governments). Obama and the democrats will have an enormous mess to fix for the American people, and the rest of the World. A mess caused by the corrupt Bush McCain administration.

You see, starting back in 2000, and before 911, it was mostly the Republican governors, Republican legislatures, and county elected Republican officials that conspired with the corrupt Bush McCain administration to raise college, and university tuitions by the fastest, and highest rate increases in American history. Some state tuitions went up by as much as a WHOPPING! 30% in one year.

The reason the Bush McCain administration did this was to force struggling working class kids into the military to pay for the sudden jump in tuition. Which was forced on them by the corrupt Bush McCain administration, and their corrupt Republican Governors, and republican controlled state legislatures.

See, Bush McCain had plans to get us into all these immoral, foolish, criminal, and unnecessary wars from the start. So they could use these wars to seize power, and later to get reelected. But, for their evil plan to work they needed more volunteer soldiers struggling to pay for an education whose blood they could spill to help them seize more power. Remember Bush McCain's "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!" theatrics.

The exploitation, and lost lives of these finest Americans is despicable, disgusting, immoral, corrupt and criminal. And it makes me SICK, and ANGRY!

You will have to vote for Obama, and the democrats in overwhelming numbers to overcome the Bush McCain vote fraud machine. Vote early if you can. Then help your fellow Americans cast their votes now, and on through election day. Vote for Obama, and the democrats like your life, and the lives of your loved ones depends on it. Because it does. You will not survive 4 more years of "Let Them Eat Cake" Bush McCain, and their republican allies.

Just look at the mess we have now.

You can fix this mess with your votes for Obama, and the democrats. And REMEMBER, no matter which of us may stumble or fall, the rest of you must continue to surge forward for Barack Obama, and the democrats, and for your-selves most of all. The children, and the World are counting on us.

It's in your hands now. And I know you will get it done.

God bless all of you.

US election: Republican operative faces voter registration fraud charges

Accusations come on the heels of Republican John McCain's fraud attacks against community organisation Acorn
Elana Schor in Washington
guardian.co.uk,
Wednesday October 22 2008 14.44 BST

While John McCain has attacked the liberal US community group Acorn for alleged voter registration fraud, the Republican party continues to employ operatives facing fraud accusations including one who faces criminal perjury charges.

Democrats are accusing McCain of hypocrisy after the weekend arrest of Mark Jacoby, a California Republican operative. Jacoby has been accused of voter registration fraud after registering himself to vote at two homes where he did not live.

The arrest comes after McCain and running mate Sarah Palin attempted to tie Barack Obama's campaign to Acorn, playing up a federal investigation of the group's voter registration tactics in several states.

"Over the past few weeks we've heard John McCain denounce voter fraud on the campaign trail while the [Republican party] hurls false attacks, so the question is: where is the outrage now?" Democratic spokesman Karen Finney asked yesterday.

Jacoby is the second Republican operative revealed this week to possess a questionable record on voter registration. Nathan Sproul – who has been investigated by Congress for allegedly destroying voter registration forms and intimidating voters – got paid $175,000 by the McCain camp this year.

"The Republicans [and] the McCain campaign have been hammering away for weeks with the same old Washington politics," Democratic party lawyer Joe Sandler said in a statement.

"In fact, none of the charges that they've been talking about have actually panned out."

Democrats called on McCain to cut his ties to both voter-registration operatives, citing frequent Republican attacks on Acorn. Obama represented Acorn as an attorney years before beginning his political career, and the group has endorsed him this year, but his camp has denied any link to Acorn's voter-registration activities.

The California Republican party told a local newspaper yesterday that their contract with Jacoby ended this week, after the state's voter registration period expired. No announcement has been made about the renewal of the contract.
