Obama outspending a more negative McCain on TV

Posted by Foon Rhee, deputy national political editor October 8, 2008 11:24 AM

The latest look at the TV advertising wars shows that spending doubled in the past week from a week earlier and that Republican John McCain's spots are nearly all attacks on Democrat Barack Obama.

The Wisconsin Advertising Project reported today that from Sept. 28 to Oct. 4, Obama spent nearly $17.5 million while McCain and the Republican National Committee spent a total of nearly $11 million.

The focus of the spending stayed in the Midwest battleground states of Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, where more than half the ad outlay happened. McCain spent 60 percent of his money in those states, while Obama spent 46.5 percent. Ohio drew the most ad spending: $2.2 million from Obama and $1.7 million from McCain.

The Obama campaign is outspending McCain's in nearly all the swing states and also spent more than $2 million each in Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, the report found.

“Ten of the 15 states where both candidates are advertising were won by Bush in the 2004 election,” Ken Goldstein, professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and director of the Wisconsin Advertising Project, said in a statement.  “The campaign is being played on the Republican side of the field this year.”

While nearly 100 percent of the McCain's ads were negative during the week, 34 percent of Obama's were -- and compared to 2004, both McCain and Obama campaigns have aired more negative advertisements.

Senator McCain was the son of an Admiral. He was in the military. He was in the House of Representatives, now in the Senate. He has lived his life supported by the taxpayer. He has no clue about the world most of us live in.

How disgusting that McCain and Palin think that United States citizens are all so stupid and such sheep that simply pointing a finger and saying the word "terrorist" would have us all running away from Senator Obama and toward them. What I find fascinating is that nobody in the press is stating the obvious. This entire tactic smacks of racism. I am the last person to shout "racism" at the drop of a hat, but can you imagine anyone even trying this nasty little tactic if Obama were blond with blue eyes and had a name like . . . um . . . let's see . . . McCain?

Mike, I'm stealing stealing a few of your words...
mcCain - Admiral; military; House of Representatives; Senate; can't use a computer (but can land a plane on a moving aircraft carrier in a storm, at night).
Obama - Lawyer; thinks the government made the computer.

In a time of war: that Iraq thing, the Afghanistan thing, don't forget the Kosovo thing, some Iranian sabre rattling, and the good 'ole ruskies threatening the U.S. and Poland with nukes (cold WAR anyone?)
I know who is more qualified to give orders to our troops. I'm voting for the lesser of two evils, in this case, ignorance is the most 'evil' I can think of.
As for health care, economy, education....neither one of em know anything about how to take care of it.

There were many POW's that demonstrated courage and fortitude during and after the Viet Nam war, but none have used that as much as John McClain to advance his own personal gain. Being a POW does not give you any more courage than those that fight and serve who we were not captured. To constantly use that as a seal of knowledge, judgement, and understanding is absolutely wrong. For 26 years he has been in Congress and still has limited knowledge of the economic issues facing our country and what to do about them. We do not have time for him to get up to speed, he should know by now

McCain's ads are ridiculous. He's bringing the whole country down into the depths of his slimy vision. How cruel. How undignified. How can anybody want this man to represent us to the world? 100% negative ads. Isn't he special!

The only honorable reason one can possibly have to strive for a position of power in government is the belief that one can do a better job than the current person in power. Obviously, the Republicans have become intellectually bankrupt and their motives are hardly pure. Every single solution these people come up with for the problems afflicting America today, particularly health care, taxes, and the banking and credit crisis - contain a big giveaway to people who don't have to worry about feeding their families and keeping a roof over their heads, let alone sending their kids to school. They're all about giveaways to a bunch of morally reprehensible super rich, like the people who created this economic mess who ended up walking away with hundreds of millions of dollars, leaving the average taxpayer holding the bag. Personally, I don't want half of every dollar I spend on health care for my children and myself going to pay for some grifter's fifth mansion or faster jet plane. And I don't think it's fair to give people like McCain another $700,000 tax break on top of the millions his pal Bush already gave him, while average people are struggling to put gas in their tank so they can get to work. For heaven's sake, let's get rid of these people!!!

this undermines the average American's intelligence. If McCain thinks shooting poor insults and spreading twisted rumors about Obama is going to help him in the polls than he is sorely mistaken. america doesn't need anymore of these desperate hypocritical leaders, it needs truth and change NOW.
i agree with "disgusted in california" , this whole republican campaign REEKS of sexism and racism.

McCain swore to "Duty, Honor, Country" as a military officer as I also did. Recent actions by his campaign lead me to question his oath. Duty YES, Honor, not very much lately, Country, NO. Obviously McCain has no solutions or he would be discussing them, instead he slimes everyone - himself, Obama, and the country with his less than honorable campaign.

How is it that the media labels it a "negative ad" when Obama shows a clip of John McCain stating that he voted with President Bush "more than 90% of the time." Or when an ad merely repeats a recent statement by a senior McCain campaign official senior campaign staffer that McCain will not discuss the economy becaue he will lose the election if he does, and instead will wage a campaign of character assassination. Obama is just telling the truth. The only true negative ads being run are the loathsome ads being run by the McCain campaign trying to convince voters that Obama is a "terrorist." Please! The right-wing base is responding -- at a recent Palin rally, someone yelled out about Obama, "Kill him!" Now who is the terrorist in this scenario? I have closely watched every polical election (national, state and local) for the past 20 years, and compared with many other sleazy compaigns, I think the McCain/Palin wins for the most false and desipicable campaign. And the fact that they call their campaign "Straight Talk Express" is even more ludicrous. They should call it the Despicable Express. Voters: please do not let the fact that one of the candidates does not care to discuss the important issue facing our country cause you to vote for that candidate based on false attacks and gutter politics. That only feeds the monster. The candidate who "voted with the President more than 90% of the time" (in his words) should be held accountable for the damage that he has already done to this country for his poor judgement and complacence, and should not be rewarded with the Presidency, if his victory would be won by evading the issues and engaging in desipicable gutter polics. For the sake of your future and your country's future, please do not let your friends, family members or co-workers vote for McCain/Palin.

Mr. McCain has no manners. Well, at the Naval Academy it was not in the curriculum. He is, however, running for presidency where both manner and brains matters as proven by the American Tragedy of the past eight years. He made an average military career owing to his father and grandfather (both former admirals). Then, he left his own family to marry into a millionaire family, and entered politics. He has never worked hard for putting bread on the family's table, and his try to monopolize POW-status is nauseating. All his "work" has been to make people believe that he is a maverick what he is NOT, and has never been. Should he has been a maverick he would not have conformed with his party 90-95%.

FWIW Of the $2M spent here in FL most of it winds up as replacement for GGW ads in the dark of the night. I sat through 3 straight commercials Obama, McCain, Obama the other night around midnight.

McCain should throw his hands up and quit;he has no chance and his VP need
to go back to school because the way she answered the questions when she
got interviewed seem as though she only has a middle school education. The
questioned ask, anyone else could answer. I wonder, how did she get to be a
Gov.? Based on her answers, she could never understand the war nor the
economy we all are fased with. I could never trust her judgement nor feel safe
on her view for the future of the country and its people.

I would like to inform you that the McCain-Ms.Piggy-Palin ticket, that neither of these two realized they can not get the Democrats, why because the vast majority of the Democratic party are Black People (Africa-America),inwhich are profoundly proud of the fact that we have an African-American,(Black-Person) running for the highest Slave Master House,(White-House) in this United States of America. To further point out to all you Adolf Hitler Racist-Publican Party individuals out there times have changed, whether you like it, or not, you will not get away with the things you did to MLK.The younger generation are far from tolerant with that mind set, it is better for you all out there, you should have a little more respect for other people.Because as long it is just words, and like the comment that was shouted out at McCain rally not follow by any sinster actions than everything will be all-right peopl.NJ1.

Negative adds tells us he has no vision. These statesman are dangerous. When whinning the election he whould be president he will also seek negative war like solutions. Only bad leaders and regimes run negative adds and solution. Because they have no real solutions. Just whatch the bad regiemes whith heir endless conspiricy and racial barrages. Solution: make an ad warning for negative adds and that negativsm is the bases of bad states.

I think that Sen McCain is a racist and that Gov. Palin does not have a clue she just stepped in and just started bashing. Are they so afraid for a black man in office that you are putting death threats on his head. You would rather see Obama assasinated than be President. You are not the kind of man we need in office, you are angry, mean, and when was the last time you were in service, things have changed stop living in the past. Palin not everyone is a soccer mom or Joe six pack, are you standing up for those of us who are not. I think that your type of politics is dangerous for this country.
